STIBBARD, Russell Oulcott - Peacefully, at home, according to his wishes, Russell entered into a well-deserved rest on Wednesday February 6th, 2008, at the age of 90. Devoted husband to Joyce Stibbard (nee Harran). A man of integrity, intelligence, humour and creativity, his spirit rises again in his children: Sharon, Linda, Kim, Robin (Boots Richardson), his grandchildren: Chris and Yolie, Peter and Laurie, and Heather, and his great- grandchildren: Melanie and Sarah. Dear uncle to Barry Stibbard and Gail Davies. Dad leaves us to be reunited with his son, Dennis. Russ was with the Toronto Irish Regiment in WWII. Following his career in the China Dept. at Eaton's, he and Joyce were proud partners in the Nine Nooks China Shop. Fondly remembered by friends and neighbours in Toronto and Innisfil. Visitation will be held on Saturday February 9th, from 4-7 p.m. and Sunday February 10th, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the R.S. KANE FUNERAL HOME (6150 Yonge Street, at Goulding, south of Steeles). HIEBERT, Hertha Lily - Hertha Lily Hiebert passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Tabor Manor in her 72nd year after a 33 year struggle with Multiple Sclerosis. She was received into the loving arms of Jesus where she is now walking those streets of gold, praising her Lord and Saviour whom she loved and served in her own quiet way. She is survived by her loving husband Jacob (Jake) and four children Nancy (Tom) Boese, Debbie (Dave) Murray, Chris (Loral) Derksen Hiebert and Vickie (Kelly) Willems. Grandchildren-Jodi, James, David, Meaghan, Andreas, Alexei, Stefan, Zak, Hannah, Sam. Predeceased by granddaughter Katie. She is also survived by her mother Katharine Hiebert and her brothers Al (Peggy) Hiebert, Herb (Barb) Hiebert, her sister Linda (friend Bob) Hiebert and sister-in-law Gloria Hiebert. A private family interment will take place at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Fairview Church, 455 Geneva St., at 10:30am on Monday, February 11th. HULL, Donald John (Lump) 1952-2008 - It is with profound sadness that the family of Donald Hull announces his passing on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, eight months after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. He was a devoted and much loved husband of Phyllis (MacKenzie) for 29 years. His two sons, MacKenzie and Harrison will miss him desperately as will his daughter-in-law Kim. Donald leaves behind his loving mother Jean Hull, sister Sandra Showalter (Clarence) and brother-in-law David MacKenzie. Donald was predeceased by his father John H. Hull (2005) and mother-in- law Janet MacKenzie (2005). Donald was a graduate of Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School and the University of Western Ontario. After attending Althouse College in London, Donald began his teaching career with the Halton District School Board retiring in 2005. His passion was golf but he loved to ski and travel as well. His friends were very important to him throughout his life and especially during his illness. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and good nature that were both evident every single day. JOHNSON, Robert John (Bob) - Peacefully at the General Hospital in St. Catharines in his 54th year. Bob leaves behind his loving daughter Rachel Johnson. Son of Gord Johnson & the late Arlene Johnson. Best friend and brother to Gord (Maureen), Dennis (Laurie), Eric, Joanne Kusch (Don) and Jill Van Ryssel (John). Beloved uncle to Tammy, Andy, Cheryl, Denise, Matt, Shelby, Scott, Erin and Kayleigh. Bob was predeceased by his niece, Karen Smith and is survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins in Hamilton. A long time employee of the Region of Niagara, Bob loved cottage life and his feisty cat Toozy. Cremation has taken place. LOCKEY, C. Bruce - Passed peacefully into the arms of his LORD on February 6, 2008 in his 63rd year. Reunited with father Ralph. Much loved by his family and friends; mother Annie, wife Gwen, sons Rob and John, daughter-in-law Mahlah, granddaughters Rheannon and Maia, and siblings Wayne (Linda), Brian (Mary Lou), Alice (Lyle) Hall and families. COTTER, Ann died peacefully at Port Colborne General Hospital on Thursday, February 7th 2008 at 92 years of age. She will be sadly missed by daughter Catherine, son-in-law Michael, and grandchildren Jane, David and lan. Predeceased by husband George (1997). Ann was born in Cornforth, England and emigrated to Canada in 1987 where she enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow up. Ann and the Haselgrove family would like to thank Dr Rungi and his office staff, hair dressers Kathy and Barb, and chiropodist Lisa for their care over the last twenty years. METE Filippo Mete passed away peacefully after a long illness with his family by his side at McMaster Hospital, Hamilton on Thursday, February 7, 2008 in his 66th year. Beloved husband of Giovanna (nee Marchio) for 44 years. Cherished only son of Rosina Strangis of Welland. Loving father of Frank (Heather), Agi (Nadia) and Nick. Proud Nonno of Matt, Talia, Noah, Emma,Olivia and Alissa Mete. Predeceased by his father Francesco Mete and stepfather Agostino Strangis. He immigrated to Canada from Lamezia Terme, Calabria Italy in 1964 and settled in Welland where he lived the rest of his life. A devoted family man and friend, he was always eager to express his Italian heritage and Azzuri pride. Filippo worked at Wabasso Ltd. for most of his working years. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and a member of St. Anthony's Society and the Sons of Italy Casa Dante Lodge. Filippo will be sorely missed by his many friends and extended family. The family will receive their friends at J.J. Passed away peacefully in Durham, Ontario in his 87th year. Beloved husband of the late Ivy Kate Fry. ANDERSON, (Clowes) Violet Maggie (nee Maetche) January 26, 1917 - February 5, 2008 Violet Maggie Anderson passed away peacefully at the Southwood Hospice, after a brief struggle with cancer. Lovingly remembered by her children Reginald (Marjory), Dale (LaVerne), Muriel (David) Jones, eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are two brothers Alvin and George (Belva) Maetche and many nieces and nephews. Vi was predeceased by her first husband and father of her children Ronald Clowes in 1951, and her second husband Donald Anderson in 1981. Her parents Salma and Guy Maetche, sister Irene Kroeker and brothers Edwin Maetche and Robert Maetche also predeceased her. ARMIT, Robert E. Suddenly passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at the age of 62. Loving and devoted husband of Amelita for thirty-four years. Predeceased his father Dr. James Conn Armit. Bob is also survived by his mother Margery, brothers John, Jim, Bill and Tucker, mother-in-law Ching Aranas, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews who are all deeply saddened and will remember him fondly for his profound wisdom, wit and caring attention to all his family. Bob was born in Calgary to Conn and Margery Armit while his parents were serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Growing up in Regina, he was a student president of Williams Collegiate. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a BA in English and Economics and a Master's in Business Administration. Bob worked with the Alberta Government as a specialist in labour statistics and manpower economics. He established his own consulting business, Corewest International, undertaking projects in more than forty countries on innovation, technology transfer, commercialization and entrepreneurship. He served as the Director of Research Services at the University of Alberta where he also taught in the School of Business, served as Director of Technology Transfer at Carleton University and subsequently in the same capacity at the Ottawa Carleton Research Institute. A consummate networker and volunteer, he was the Chair of the Allocations Committee of the United Way of Edmonton, Chair of the Race Promotions Committee at the Edmonton Northlands, member of the Board of Governors of Alberta College and member of the boards of the Canada Research Management Association and the Association of University Research Parks. Bob and Amelita were married in Edmonton and their life took them to Ottawa. They shared fully a passion for travel, theatre, music and the arts. Bob read history, was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing golf. BOWES, Josephine M. July 19, 1911 - January 31, 2008 Josephine (Jo) passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at the age of 96 years. Jo was born in Conrad, Montana and moved to Dansville, New York where she met Leo while he was on vacation. They married six weeks later and moved to Regina, then Saskatoon for a short stay before moving to Calgary where they lived for the past seventy years. She was an active member of the Parkhill/Oak Park Church of Christ, as well as the Glencoe Club, a Sewing Club and Bridge Club for many years. Jo was an accomplished decorator and made many events very special with her beautiful designs. She took great pleasure in celebrating the seasons and special holiday events by decorating her home with her creative ideas. Her bay windows were always a joy to behold with her beautiful floral bouquets. She brought happiness and many smiles to those who were fortunate enough to see her latest creations. Josephine is survived by her sister Carol (Harold) Horner, her sons Riley (Druh) and Jay, and her daughter Leean (Leonard) Underdahl. "Nana" will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Brent, Cody, Croft and Lorae and her great-grandchildren, Rylee, Parker, Traford and Baylee. She was predeceased by two of her sisters, a daughter Jolee, and her beloved husband of seventy-three years, Leo. COONFER, Edna May June 15, 1912 - February 5, 2008 Edna passed away peacefully at the Beverly Midnapore Centre in Calgary at the age of 95 years. Born in Langdon, AB, Edna grew up on the family farm near Dalemead. She was the last survivor of the Clifford and Mabel Coonfer family. After graduating from Colonel Walker School in Calgary, she began her teaching career at the age of eighteen in Mossleigh, AB. Edna was born to be a teacher and became very successful at it. She enjoyed travelling the world and saw many sites during the summer holidays. Teaching was natural for her but she decided to spread her wings. Edna obtained her American citizenship and worked for an oil company, later becoming the private secretary to the Minister of Health for Washington State. During the 1960's she returned to Calgary and was a Business Education teacher at Viscount Bennett High School. When she retired, she enjoyed visiting and playing bridge with her friends. Edna is survived by several nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly and liked to be considered their "Auntie Mame". The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Edna's very special friend, Christina Oh, for all her caring and friendship. As to Edna's wishes, there will be no Funeral Service. She will be laid to rest in the Garden of Everlasting Life, Mountain View Memorial Gardens. HOUSE, Vivian Bernice (nee Phythian) 1922 - 2008 Vivian, of Calgary passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at the age of 85 years. Born in Regina, SK, she moved to Alberta with her parents, married John Thomas House in July, 1942. She lived and worked most of her life in Edmonton. Vivian especially loved her family and she enjoyed her plants and cats. Vivian is survived by daughters, Bernice Logan (Allan) of Calgary, Dawn Marie House of Victoria, B.C. and son J.W.T. McHUGH, Michael (Mike) Stewart December 18, 1957 - February 2, 2008 It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Mike McHugh of Calgary on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at the age of 50 years. Mike had an unwavering love for his family, especially his daughters who he stayed home to raise and spent countless hours volunteering at schools and coaching soccer. SKLAR, Jennie May 13, 1915 - February 6, 2008 Jennie Sklar, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Hospice on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at the age of 92 years with her family around her. Jennie was born on May 13, 1915 in Saskatoon, SK. She came to Calgary with her husband Edward in 1934 where he practiced dentistry. Jennie was a life member of Hadassah, active in National Council of Jewish Women, Beth Israel Sisterhood, a member of Beth Tzedec Synagogue and an avid bridge player. Jennie was a devoted Mother, Baba, and Great Baba. Our Mother had a zest for life and lived every day of her 92 years with grace and dignity. Jennie is survived by her brother Dr. Charles Sklar (Bertha) of Toronto; her three daughters, Carol (Mel) Levitt, Ruth (Earle) Snider of Edmonton, and Val (Lou) Bracey; grandchildren, Howard Levitt (April), Terry Levitt (Allison Stromberg) of Saskatoon, Adam Snider of Edmonton, Hart Snider (Galit) of Vancouver, Sarah Bracey (fiance Rod), and Nathan Bracey; as well as her great-grandchildren, Sydney and Brynn of Calgary and Noah and Jack of Saskatoon. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Edward Sklar and her sister Anne Aaron. BROWER, Anthony (Tony) David (Bereziuk) July 18, 1952 - January 19, 2008 It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Tony at the Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops with his family at his side. Funeral Services were held at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Kamloops on Wednesday, January 23, 2008, and on Friday, January 25, 2008 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in Calgary. Tony was laid to rest at Queen's Park Cemetery. Tony leaves behind his loving wife Misia Novak; sons Clifford, Beau and Sasha; father Steven, mother Mary Bereziuk; sister Elaine (Glenn) Smith; nephews Michael and Matthew Smith; godmother and aunt Nonie Railey; and many cousins in Canada, USA and Ukraine. Tony was born in Edmonton, Alberta. He went to school in Calgary and attended Sir James Lougheed Elementary, A.E. Cross Junior High, and Viscount Bennett Senior High. He received his Commerce and MBA degrees from the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Tony loved to teach and spent his last six years at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. Thompson Rivers University paid tribute by canceling classes at the School of Business so that students could attend Farewell Services for Tony and by flying their flags at half mast. Tony was a keen golfer and really enjoyed golfing with his sons and his friends. Tony also enjoyed traveling and went on many interesting trips with his wife Misia. He will be missed very much. VESA, Elmer 2008-02-08 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our step-father, papa and great-grandfather Elmer Henrik Vesa on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Roseview Manor. Elmer was born on his parent’s homestead in New Finland, Saskatchewan, January 24, 1918. A few years later the family moved to Meadow Portage, Manitoba. As Elmer grew he learned many skills at his father’s side; lumbering, trapping and fishing along with his mechanics. He was avid talented musician teaching himself to play the violin and accordion; often playing at weddings and other celebrations. He was also proud of the fact that he owned the first car in his area, a 1926 Model T Ford. Because farming was not his calling he moved on to British Columbia and spent time as a lumber jack and fisherman. It was in British Columbia that he met the love of his life, Hilppa with whom he would spend over 50 years. On arriving in Thunder Bay he worked at Canada Car and at various bush camps. Later he and Hilppa made a move to English River and then Barril Bay where he spent summers as a guide and trapping during winters. It was a period when he was also able to spend many happy times with his grandchildren teaching them to fish and play crib. In retirement Elmer learned to like farming. His little plot of land in Nolalu was his pride and joy. He also went for music lessons and learned to read music, a skill of which he was very proud. He was also able to practice his violin playing to his hearts content. His love of music led him to join the Senior Music Makers, a group he belonged to for many years. He always found time to have a dance with Hilppa. Papa was also the number one fan at his grandchildren’s sporting events encouraging them at all their endeavors. Every summer he looked forward to going blueberry picking with the girls, Anja and Maureen. Elmer will be missed by step-son Ralph Sutherland (Pirjo), step-daughter Carole Lewicky, grandchildren: Jeffrey Lewicky (Donna), Brenda Lewicky, Sandra Sutherland-Byers (Patrick), David Sutherland (Kerry Walker), Stephen Sutherland (Leanne) and great-grandchildren Jordan Lewicky, Jodi Bjorklund, Maija Sutherland and Scott Byers. Brother Walter Vesa (Cecile), sisters Dorothy Ogren, Taimi Ostrand, Vera MacLennan Along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Hilppa in December 2006. His parents Eino and Anna Vesa. Brother Tauno Vesa, sisters Laina Powshik and Edna Sweet and son-in-law Floyd Lewicky. CARR, Bertha Frances (nee Batty) November 26, 1918 - February 3, 2008 Bertha F. Carr passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 3, 2008 after a brief illness, at the age of 89. Bert was born near Assiniboia, Saskatchewan in 1918. As the second oldest of ten children, she spent much of her childhood, including the years of the Great Depression, on the family homestead helping with the running of the family and the farm. During this time, she developed a life-long interest in the natural world. In 1937, after attending Normal School in Regina, she returned to the Assiniboia area to teach in a series of one-room schools - whose student population included several of her younger siblings. In 1944 she and her sister Ruth headed east to join the war effort. After training at the Montreal Wireless School, she served overseas in the RCAF Women's Division doing air traffic control at Linton Air Base in England. When she returned she attended the University of Alberta, graduating in 1948 with a BSc in Geology. This led to work at the Alberta Oil and Gas Conservation Board where she met John Carr, her future husband, who had a strong interest in geology and entomology. His interest in insects, specifically beetles, meshed with Bert's interest in the natural world, and forged the foundation of their life together. They spent many extended summers traveling North America, collecting, cataloging and identifying beetles, and her teaching experience proved invaluable as a stream of professional, amateur and student entomologists passed through their house, seeking information and education. When Bert and John were physically unable to continue with the collection, it was donated to the Canadian National Collection of Insects, Arthropods and Nematodes in Ottawa, ON. Apart from her interest in beetles, she also enjoyed an eclectic set of hobbies, from antiques to bridge to photography, which was reflected in the home decor. After 2000, much of her time was spent caring for John who was disabled due to a lengthy illness. Bert is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Bonnie, Doug and Margo (Glover); a birth daughter Margot Lowe; four grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters, and a legacy of entomological knowledge based on a collection of several hundred thousand beetles and passed down to the next generations of entomologists. McMILLAN, Evelyn Catherine. Evelyn born March 18, 1918 in Montreal, Quebec passed away peacefully on February 5, 2008 at Fleetwood Place in Surrey, BC. Emmanuel retired from Inco as a hoistman, at the age of 63 and moved to Sturgeon Falls. In Sturgeon Falls he belonged to the Legion, and was an avid bowler and participated in many golden age events. He had strong work ethics and also enjoyed working part-time as a bricklayer.
