Rouyn-Noranda : Est décédé le 28 janvier 2008 à Montréal, à l’âge de 72 ans, M. Claude Toupin, domicilié à Rouyn-Noranda, époux de Louisette Royer. M. Claude Toupin laisse dans le deuil son épouse: Louisette Royer; sa fille : Christine (Michel Laurin); ses petits-fils : Maxime et Dominique; ses frères et sœurs : Jean-Guy, Jean-Marie, Jacqueline, Rita, Huguette, Monique et Raymonde tous de Montréal; ses beaux-frères, belles-soeurs, ses neveux et nièces ainsi que plusieurs parents et amis(es). SIMPSON, Esther Mae Illsley SIMPSON, Esther Mae Illsley - 91, died peacefully in Bradford House, Halifax, on February 4, 2008. Much loved by her family and friends, she always had a twinkle in her eye and a helping hand for others. Esther was born in Fairview Farm in Somerset, Kings Co., on January 11, 1917, a daughter of Fred and Laura Illsley. She attended the Provincial Normal College and graduated from Acadia University in 1941. Following her marriage to Raymond Simpson in 1943, they moved to Halifax where she became a home economics teacher with Halifax schools for many years. Her passions were love for her extended family, the joy of cooking and encouragement of her husband's musical and writing avocations. She was a member of the Halifax branch of Nova Scotia Home Economics Association. Reflecting her lifelong love of food and homemaking, she was editor of their book "Kitchen Clues - a Compendium of Helpful Hints for the Newlywed, the Not-so-Newlywed and the Pot-Weary Veteran" and also helped edit and test recipes for a cookbook published by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Halifax Symphony. She was a member of St. Andrew's United Church, where she was a long-standing and active member of the UCW. She was predeceased by husband, Raymond, and her brother, Charles Illsley. She leaves her children, David Simpson (Patricia), Potomac, Md., U.S.A.; Joan Bears (Sandy) Halifax; Eric (Ann Smith) Nottingham, England; grandchildren, Timothy Simpson (Laura Parmelee), Scott Simpson (Laura Graham), Jane Simpson Gray (Justin), John Simpson (Lindsey Goodman), Mark Bears (Sarah O'Neil), Anna May Simpson; four great-grandchildren; sister, Freda Wilson, Kingston, Ont.; as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are being made by J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax, where visitation will be Friday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral to be held in St. Andrews United Church on Saturday, February 9, at 10 a.m. Family internment in Merigomish. STREVETT, Patricia - On February 2, 2008 Pat Strevett, nurse, pilot and supermom passed away after a brave battle with cancer at Trenton Memorial Hospital. Jon, her beloved husband of 52 years and devoted daughter Susie & her husband Roger were at her side. She was 76 years old. Daughter of Leslie (Bill) and Eleanor Sykes, she was born in Blackpool, England. Patricia emigrated to Canada with her loving, soon-to-be husband to marry and start a family. A great inspiration and source of comfort, she will be sadly missed by her four children Gary (Claire), Mike (Cindy), Susie (Roger) and Tim (Shirley). Patricia was a pillar of strength, lavish with praise and constant supporter of her seven grandchildren: Melissa, Bradley, Rebecca, Rachel, Taylor, Olivia and Cameron. Always a positive role model, loyal and dedicated to her family and close friends, she is survived by her sister Audrey in the UK. Being married to a pilot in the forces meant the Strevett family enjoyed living in Trenton, Exeter, Shearwater, Greenwood, Ottawa and Trenton again. For the last 35 years Patricia called Bayside home. Thanks to all the wonderful staff at Trenton Memorial Hospital for taking such great care of mum in her final times. GILLIS, Mary Anna "Mamie" GILLIS, Mary Anna "Mamie" - Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, 83, Port Hood, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on February 4, 2008, in Inverness Hospital. Mamie was born in Inverness on January 29, 1925, to Murdock and May (MacDonald) MacIsaac. Following the death of her mother, shortly after her birth, she and her sister Tina moved to the home of her grandparents, Archie and Christina MacDonald, Dunakyn. She was raised with the help of her uncle "Sandy" and aunt Annie. She attended Glencoe Mills School, and as a young woman, worked in Boston, Mass. She married her love, Richard J. Gillis on September 6, 1949, in Glencoe Church. They moved to Toronto in 1951 where they worked and raised their family before moving back to their beloved Cape Breton Island in 1975. Richard and Mamie opened the "Dungarry Grill" in 1976 where she was often told she made "the best hamburgers in the country". Mamie was also well-known for her delicious baking, her kind, gentle manner and her love of family and children, especially her grandchildren. She embraced her role as wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all. She was a great listener and had a way of making everyone feel important and special. No one left her house without a cup of tea and plate of biscuits and sweets. She was fiercely loyal to her culture and roots, had a great love of the Gaelic language and song, and spoke often of her many fond memories of growing up in Dunakyn and Glencoe. She was a woman of strong faith, a wonderful role model for her family and highly regarded by those who knew her. She had a generous heart, a beautiful ready smile, and always found time to help those in need. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was predeceased by her sister, Mary MacDonald (Joseph) (Shumacher, Ont.); brothers, Donald MacIsaac (Josephine) (Scarborough, Ont.), James MacIsaac (New Waterford), and Archie MacIsaac (Toronto). She is survived by her devoted husband, Richard J. Gillis, Port Hood; daughters, Anne Marie Cameron (Norman), Lower Sackville, and Christine Campbell (Duncan Arthur), Mabou; sons, Richard Gillis (Martha), Port Hood; Sandy Gillis (Francene), Port Hood; Joseph Gillis (Darlene), Port Hood; Duncan Gillis (Deanna), Toronto; sister, Tina MacMillan (John Alex), Mabou; granddaughters, Carolyn Cameron (Todd Sparkes), Lisa Marie Cameron and Suzanne Cameron, Chrisanna Gillis, Alisha Gillis, Kim Gillis, Mairinn Campbell, Eilidh Campbell, and Seonid Campbell; grandsons, Jeffrey Gillis, Scott Gillis, James Gillis, Brennan Gillis, and Andrew Gillis; several nieces and nephews. Frederick Edwin (Ted) Leadston, of Allumette Island, QC.Loving father of Scott Leadston (Tracey), Mattawa, Paul Leadston (Christine), Ottawa and Jeffrey Leadston (Sheri), St. Andrews, ON. Grandfather (Umpy) to Ryan and Shawn, (Papa) to Erin and Nicolas, and Connor and Madeline.Dear brother of Wayne Leadston, Guelph, Gary Leadston (Anna), Rideau Ferry, Elaine Townsend, Kitchener, Sandra Leadston, (Guelph) and Donna Leadston (Trevor), Guelph. Brother-in-law of Arthur and Yolande Gallagher of Pembroke. Predeceased by his loving wife, Judith Anne Leadston (nee Gallagher). Son of the late Frederick and Edna (nee Stuckey) Leadston, (Guelph). For 32 years, Fred was a musician (Trombone) with the Canadian Armed Forces, with postings in Petawawa, (Canadian Guards Regimental Band), Montreal, (RCA Band), Ottawa, (Central Band) and Kingston (Vimy Band). He also proudly served in Korea with the Canadian Guards. His musical career did not end with retirement, as he directed the Pittsburg Township concert Band. He formed the Music Vets concert Band in Kingston which performed many community concerts in Kingston and Northern New York State. Fred was also the Director of Music with the Petawawa Legion Band, Ottawa Fire Department band and most recently was an active member of the New Orleans Express Jazz ensemble based in Pembroke.Among Fred's many musical accomplishments he performed in the Ottawa Jazz Festival, and revived and arranged the musical score for the long lost Sir John A. Macdonald Waltz. Fred was also a gifted composer having written “Be Canadian“, a patriotic song which was played during many special occasions and national holidays. Fred's life was filled with music, friendships and love. He will be deeply missed by present and past bandmates, friends who shared his joy for the cottage life on “The Island“ and his family who will always remember his moonlight serenades across the bay. At Fred's request, there will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral celebration in the presence of his ashes on Saturday February 9 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Columbkille's Cathedral, Pembroke. MILLS, William (Bill) Lloyd passed away after a lengthy illness at St. Joseph's Health Centre on Tuesday February 5th, 2008. He leaves to celebrate his life, his wife of 55 years, Marie (nee Snow), his daughters Barbara (Dan), Brenda (Brian) and his son Bill (Sue); grandchildren, Michael and Mark Deziel, Michael and Katharine Jiricka and Ashley and Alysha Mills. Dad was born in Howe Bay, PEI May 26th, 1921 to Emma and Charles Mills. He was one of ten children. In 1939 he joined the war effort. He belonged to the 17th Duke of York Royal Canadian Hussars (7th RECCE Regiment) and was part of the D-Day invasion at Normandy, France. He suffered injuries from enemy fire that resulted in a lengthy hospital stay in England. After the war he stayed in Europe with Canadian Armed Forces to assist with the allied recovery operations. When he returned to Canada he hired on for INCO and worked for 37 years at the Levack Mine. Dad was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 503 for many years, becoming a life member in 1998. When the Legion identified a need for ambulance services in the area over forty years ago he was one of the first volunteer driver/attendants. He participated proudly in Remembrance Day parades and other Legion activities. In 2006, Dad had a medical setback that resulted in an inability to walk and he was no longer able to live at home. He moved to Pioneer Manor directly from his stay at Laurentian Hospital and has resided there since that time. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of Cranberry Place - Pioneer Manor for their care and many kindnesses to Dad. ERICKSON, Archie Edgar ERICKSON, Archie Edgar - 85, Middleton, passed away Monday, February 4, 2008, in the Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Radville, Sask., he was a son of the late David and Anna (Lindgren) Erickson. He served overseas during the Second World War. He later joined and retired from the RCAF with the rank of Captain. He was posted to St. James, Man.; Saskatchewan and Greenwood during his 28 year career. After retiring, he was employed with Social Services in Halifax and later in Victoria, B.C., as a social worker and membership chairperson for the British Columbia Government and Retired Employee Association. Archie loved square dance calling and was a founding member of several square dancing clubs in Nova Scotia and British Columbia. He had a love for model railroads, volunteered for Meals on Wheels in British Columbia and worked for the Benevolent Society in Greenwood. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Margaret "Peggy" Mills; daughters, Anna (Fred) Gatenby, Whistler, B.C.; Leslie (Aubrey) Morris, Melvern Square; Brenda (Denis) Prillo, Mission, B.C.; sister, Thelma Jacobson, Seattle, Wash.; grandchildren, Dwain Spence; Jillian, Morgan and Eric Gatenby, Kimberly (Tom) Chapman, Tricia (Jon) Friesen, Erica (Brent) Foster, Bradley (Karilyn) Morris, Craig (Lori) Williams, Tia Williams (Scott Hardy), and 11 great-grandchildren. BRIDGEO, GERALDINE AGNES "BETTY" - It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother, Geraldine Agnes "Betty" Bridgeo surrounded by her loving family on February 3rd, 2008 at the Saint John Regional Hospital after her courageous battle with cancer. Mom was born in 1932, the daughter of the late Millen and Margaret (Parks) Stevens. Mom is survived by four sons, Bobby Bridgeo (Mary), Arthur Kincade (Heather), Norman Tait (Susan) all of Saint John and Robert Locke (Elizabeth) of Winnipeg; five daughters, Nancy Lackie (Glen), Wanda Jefferson and Helen Bridgeo all of Saint John, Mary Green of St. Andrews and Rev. RSINGLETON, COURTNEY LEIGH ESTES - Courtney Leigh Estes Singleton passed away on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, in Fresno, Calif., with her husband and mother by her side, after a courageous year-long battle with brain cancer. She was 32 and is survived by husband, Duane Singleton; father, Robert (Jura) Estes; mother, Lynda Chambers; grandmother, Louise Thomason; aunt, Becky (Jerry) Hollis; brother, Todd (Sandy) Estes; sister, Tami Estes; niece, Madeline Estes; nephews, Tyler Estes, Hunter Nunns and Ryan Nunns; also her favourite (and only) cousin, Cathy (Joey) Coy and her boys. Courtney was born in Torrance, Calif., and grew up in southern California, until moving to St. Andrews in the mid-1980s. She attended school in St. Andrews and briefly went to RCS Netherwood in Rothesay, N.B., Courtney started travelling at a very young age, flying between New Brunswick and California or Florida in her teens. She then lived in Florida and Texas for a few years, always returning to St. Andrews to re-group and recharge herself. She attended NBCC St. Andrews, taking the Hospitality Course, which seemed a natural fit for her vibrant personality. Her love of travel and new places took her from Florida to Columbia, Aruba, Mexico and Italy, in addition to many of the states. She recently returned to California with her dog, Bella, by her side, to be close to her ailing grandmother; married the love of her life, Duane; and was so proud of her success in pursuing a continuing career of management of an upscale restaurant. Courtney's mantra during the last year of her short life was "Live, Laugh, and Love" and she did all of these to the fullest. Her last trips home to St. Andrews and Dallas were filled with laughter and love, joyous reunions with family and close friends, and she treasured every hug and embrace. All of the good days were filled with confidence and plans for the future, thus inspiring her friends to be closer to their loved ones and to appreciate life more. Courtney has left a large hole in our lives. A memorial service will be held at the St. Andrews Anglican Church, St. Andrews, N.B., on Feb. 23, 2008 at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow in the church hall. DUFFY, GERALD PATRICK (GERRY) - Gerald passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at the Saint John Regional Hospital on February 3, 2008. Gerry was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia on February 19, 1956. He was the youngest son of Delmar Duffy and the late Diana (Hebert) Duffy. Survivors include his fiancee, Mary Lou Colpitts; and sons, BJ and Jamie; brother, James of Charlottetown PE; sisters, Phyllis Simons (Gord) of Amherst NS, Constance Carruthers of Charlottetown PE, and Lynn Welcher (John) of New Maryland, NB; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Martha; and brothers, Joseph and Charles. He will be sadly missed by Spook, Frosty and Sydney. Gerry worked with several businesses in Saint John. His most recent was CATSA at Saint John Airport. He was an avid fan of NASCAR and never missed a race. He also collected vintage cars. PEACOCK, Max - Suddenly on Sunday, February 3rd, 2008 in his 92nd year, Max passed quietly in his sleep. WWII Veteran, member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #52, Canadian Pacific Railway employee of 34 years. Devoted husband of the late Bessie Peacock (nee Hillyard) and father of Doug and the late Bonnie Peacock. Max was a doting granddad to his three adoring granddaughters, Kym Peacock, Marnie Peacock and Jill-Suzanne Sparks (nee Paecock). FISH, Eliza - Born in Cartier, Ont., on January 15, 1916 to John and Eliza Galt, Eliza Fish passed away at Extendicare on December 22, 2007 in her 92nd year. Predeceased by her husband George, son David and his wife Carolyn. Survived by sons Robert (Phyllis) and Keith (Sallie) and daughter Elizabeth Scobie, also 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. After an active family, community, and church life, as well as gardening and knitting, she chose retirement at Bentley's in Godfrey before transferring to Extendicare. Funeral Service was on December 27 at James Reid Cataraqui Chapel with Pastor Stephen Ambury officiating and daughter-in- law Sallie giving the eulogy. Pallbearers were Jon Fish, James Fish, Dan Fish, Mike Kenyon, Derek Scobie and Rick Fornier. Interment was at Glenhaven Memorial Gardens. 10979497

PALMER, Renée Claire - 1983/09/22 - 2008/02/02 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Renée Claire Palmer at the Kingston General Hospital after a valiant three-year battle with cancer. Beloved daughter of Colette Séguin-Palmer and Michael Palmer and big sister of Leif Palmer. Throughout her life and especially during her illness Renée was always outgoing, positive, and selfless - always putting the welfare of others before herself. She was a great inspiration to everyone especially her brother Leif. Renée was a passionate student of école Cathedral and Regiopolis Notre Dame. She went on to achieve a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Arts - Studio Art) with a minor in philosophy from The University of Guelph. Renée will be deeply missed by her family and by her grandmother Lillian Palmer and her numerous aunts and uncles and cousins: Jason, Genny, Amy, Melissa, Philip, Jessica, Sarah, Christopher, Geoffery, Harmony (niece), Lily, Larissa, Jordan, Adam and Alison. Family and friends will be received on Thursday February 7, 2008 from 7-9 p.m. and on Friday February 8, 2008 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the GORDON F. ALLEN, Elsie Mary (Sadleir) - Of Sarnia, passed away at the Bluewater Health - Mitton Site on Friday, February 1, 2008, at the age of 95 years. Loving wife of the late Nelson Allen (1987). Survived by one daughter Ann Gilroy (James), two sons Paul (Carole) and Morris and daughter-in- law Margaret. Also survived by her brother William “Bill“ Sadleir, sister-in-law Thelma Sadleir and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Predeceased by her son John Allen (1995) and one brother Charles (2004). Elsie will be remembered as a dedicated member of the Girl Guides, having joined in September 1930 and held various positions over the years. In September 1981 she became a member of the newly formed Trefoil Guild (retired Guiders) and was its an active member until the time of her death. Elsie was also a faithful supporter of the Boy Scouts for many years where her late husband Nelson Allen gave 62 years of distinguished service. All family members participated in both of the organizations over the years. A member of St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church, Sarnia. By request there will be no funeral home visitation, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service, celebrating the life of Elsie, will be conducted at St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church, 718 Cathcart Boulevard, Sarnia on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Rachael Parker officiating.
