Ducharme Tétreault Madeleine 1926 - 2008 À l’Hôpital de l’Enfant-Jésus, le 2 février 2008, à l’âge de 81 ans et 8 mois, est décédée dame Madeleine Ducharme, épouse de feu monsieur Georges Tétreault. Elle demeurait à Ste-Foy. La famille recevra les condoléances au Centre funéraire du Plateau 693, avenue Nérée-Tremblay, Ste-Foy le mardi 5 février 2008 de 18h à 21h. Le service religieux sera célébré le mercredi 6 février 2008 à 11h, en l’église St-Mathieu (3155, chemin des Quatre Bourgeois à Québec) où la famille recevra les condoléances trente minutes avant la cérémonie. L’inhumation se fera ensuite au Cimetière de l’Assomption. PARADIS, James “Jim” - The family announces with deepest sorrow, his sudden death, Sunday, February 3rd, 2008 at the age of 88 years. Son of the late Octave and of the late Eugenie (née Couillard) Paradis. Beloved husband of 55 years to Hélène Paradis (née Sabourin) of Sudbury. Loving father of Pierre Paradis (Lauraine) of Georgetown and Denis Paradis (Nicole) of Sudbury. Predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Oscar, Angeline, Doria, Adolphe, Grace, Edouard and Thomas. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Marc, Sophie, Jérome and Steven. Predeceased by his grandson Ryan. MEDLEY, Kathleen Marie - In loving memory of Kathleen Marie Medley (nee Clough-Ormiston) who died Saturday morning, February 2, 2008 in Oakville. She was born on August 6, 1921 to Frank and Marjorie (nee Tester) Clough-Ormiston, in Pembroke, Ontario and was the older sister to the late Dr. Michael Ormiston. During her childhood, she spent time in Ontario, Indiana and Kentucky before attending school in England. She graduated from Ashford School and earned a full scholarship to King's College in London where she received her B.Sc. in Geography and Physics as well as her A.K.C. She attended university during WWII enduring the Blitz in London, and she volunteered for the Auxiliary Territorial Service and drove an ambulance in London in 1943. After the war, she lived in Paris before returning to Canada. Marie enjoyed the North and often recalled fondly her experiences teaching north of Kapuskasing in Smokey Falls, Ontario in a one-room schoolhouse in 1947. In 1948 she married Graham B. Medley in Toronto and in 1952 they moved to Onaping, Ontario where they raised their 6 children John, Michael, Virginia, Andrew, and twins Quintus and Marjorie alongside other early residents who, in sharing this adventure became lifelong friends. She later described this time in Onaping as the happiest years of her life. Marie greatly enjoyed being a supply teacher at Levack District High School in the 60's and 70's and at Sudbury Secondary and Lo-Ellen Park in the 80's. She loved the arts, especially classical music and live theatre and she was a long-time supporter of the Sudbury Theatre Centre. She also served on the Onaping Falls Library Board and was instrumental in establishing a library branch in Dowling. Marie died after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease and is survived by her children, 9 grandchildren, and 5 nieces and nephews. Family will receive visitors on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. until a Service of Remembrance at 7:00 p.m. all in the WARD FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 109 Reynolds Street, Oakville (905-844-3221). OBITUARY RINKO CATHERINE NAKASHIMA (KOJIMA) Slipped away peacefully and surrounded by love on February 2, 2008 after a long, exhausting struggle. She asks us to be happy for her as she is once again with the love of her life, our father Kats, whom we have all missed so much during the past eleven years. She completely devoted herself to her children and will be adored by them forever: Kathy (Doron); Ken (Tracey), Karin (Pak, who left us far too soon on March 2, 2007), Keith, and Kari (Wayne). Her warmth and kindness will never be forgotten by her cherished grandchildren Jordan, Justin, Kam, Jason, Jessica, Andrea (Joel), and Blaine (Debbie), and great-grandchildren Ty and Max. She leaves behind her sister Fusako Matsushita (the late Junji), brother Tatsuo (Reiko), and sisters-in-law Lois Hashimoto (Johnny) and Fuji (the late Kay). Mom was predeceased by her father Henry Kojima (Nakatani), mother Yuki Ikeda, and oldest brother and surrogate dad, Sumio (Miyo). She will also be greatly missed by her many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Mom loved gardening, dancing, aquafit, and the Bahamas. She was precocious as a child, skipping two grades and still placing first (despite only learning English at six), and she taught herself how to play the mandolin and piano. Her talents are too numerous to list, but included cooking, baking, fashion design and pattern-making, knitting and crocheting, carpentry, electrical work and plumbing. Her greatest gift by far, however, was her way with people. Despite having been interned for years as Japanese-Canadian teenagers in World War II camps, Mom and Dad showed no bitterness, choosing instead to emphasize the importance of love, generosity, and respect for all. A former Sunday school teacher, Mom could lift the spirits of the gloomiest soul. Family and friends flocked to her side, drawn by her understanding, patience, laughter, and wisdom. She was the quintessential optimist who counted aloud all her blessings as she sat through each chemo session, recovered from two major surgeries, and quietly endured four and a half years of pain. We would like to thank her surgeon Dr. Phil Gordon of the Jewish General Hospital, her GP Dr. Mario Boucher, and the Palliative Care staff of the Cite de la Sante hospital for their care, as well as David Goldman for alleviating some of her pain. Visitation will be private. MACKINNON (LeLacheur), Grace Bell Sept. 7, 1911-Feb. 1, 2008 It is with deep sadness that Grace’s family announces her sudden passing at the age of 96 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on February 1, 2008. Grace was a devoted mother to Barbara Ann Macpherson (Jack) of Edmonton, Alberta. Very proud and loving grandmother of Sandra Macpherson (Luke Wilson) of Columbus, Ohio, and John Scott Macpherson (Raffi Folli) of Belfast, Ireland. Cherished great-grandmother of Roma, Margo and Sofia Grace. Survived by sister, Meme Harvey (Howard) of San Bruno, California; brother, Murray Bell of Charlottetown, and many special nieces and nephews of P.E.I. and U.S.A. She was predeceased by her husband, Ern (in 1952) and sisters, Helen, Roma, Tem and brother, Seton. Grace enjoyed a long and very healthy life. She especially enjoyed her teaching career at Spring Park School, Charlottetown, and Eastwood Elementary, Edmonton. She traveled extensively to India, China, USSR, Europe, Yukon, N.W.T. and U.S.A. to fulfill her dream of “putting her feet in every ocean in the world”. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. A celebration of her life will be held at Southern Kings and Queens Funeral Chapel, Murray River, on February 6, 2008, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Children’s Wish Foundation or the Murray Harbour Cemetery. BALL (nee Balina), Joanne 2008-02-05 Mrs. Joanne Ball (nee Balina) loving mother, caring wife, dedicated sister and infinite friend passed away in her home on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at the tender age of 65. Joanne was a beautiful, caring woman, generous beyond comparison, with an amiable nature, passionate disposition and spunky fortitude that brightened the lives of everyone around her. She spent her last few months on the west coast, living life to the fullest, with family and friends before returning home and succumbing to medical conditions that plagued her, her entire life. HOFER, John 2008-02-05 Mr. John Hofer, age 71 years, a resident of Nolalu, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 3rd at St. Joseph‘s Hospice. He is survived by his wife Sandy, daughter Vicki and son-in-law Kevin McMahon, son Ed Hofer and wife Kathy, four grandchildren Nathan & Lance McMahon and Deryn & Kaylee Hofer. KAPUSH, William 2008-02-05 Our Dad, William Kapush, 72 years passed away suddenly on February 1st, 2008 in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. William was born April 4th, 1935 in Port Arthur. He worked by trade as a construction millwright supervisor, belonging to Local 1151 Carpenters and Joiners Union. He took pride in his work and was a highly intelligent man with a gifted mind. He had a naturally curiosity about everything and anything. From woodworking to complicated mechanical engineering, Dad could do it all and do it well. He will be forever missed by his only daughter Linda (Clark), his sons Kirby, Tom (Melanie) and Kerry (Lori), his grandchildren Jarrett, Dan (Lindsay), Shanacy, Nick, Jarred, Michael, Kiel, Kara, Kelsey, and Melanie. He is also survived by siblings Eddie, Ivan, and Patricia as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and his former wife Shirley. William was predeceased by his parents and siblings; Stella, Nellie, Elsie, Nick, and Vally. Myrna was born on January, 22nd, 1940 in Miami Manitoba, cherished daughter of Lorne ( predeceased) and Violet Babcock. Beloved wife of Jim Lovil of Texas, and beloved mother of Kim ( Brousseau) Kalviainen ( Esko). Dear sister of Lynn Latreille ( Jim predeceased), and Lorie Lavallee ( Luc). Loving grandmother of Erik Kalviainen ( Amanie), David Kalviainen ( Tina), and Adam Kalviainen. Myrna will be sadly missed by niece Jenny Latreille and nephew Matt Latreille ( Sara) as well as by many relatives across Canada and friends in Sudbury and Texas. Myrna had a full life, filled with travel in earlier years, and many careers, which included working for Computer Devices of Canada in Ottawa. After moving to Texas 35 years ago she owned two businesses, sold Avon, and soon became a District Manager retiring in 1992. Myrna enjoyed making crafts and one of a kind jewelry. She joined the Art League at Brazosport College and flourished as a painter. She became close friends with her classmates and she volunteered at the Art Gallery where she displayed and sold her jewelry and paintings. Myrna's beautiful paintings adorn the homes of family and friends in Sudbury. Myrna loved being an artist. She also loved her two cats and living in her home on Bastrop Bayou with her husband, and best friend, Jim. A memorial service and celebration of Myrna's life will be held on Friday, February 8th at 3:00 pm at All Nation's Church, 885 Prete Street, Sudbury, with a reception to follow. 10980156

SCOTT, Marian Elizabeth May 12, 1926 - February 2, 2008 Marian Elizabeth Scott (nee Cullen), beloved wife of Roy Scott of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at the age of 81 years. She was born on May 12, 1926 in the Rose Valley district at Killarney, MB. Marian was a willing volunteer in her church and community. She retired from the Calgary Board of Education in 1982. Besides her loving husband, Roy, she is survived by her son Jim (Terri) of Mission, BC; her daughter Joan (Marc) Lee of Calgary; her granddaughters, Autumn (Alex) White and Clover Scott both of Vancouver, BC; her four grandchildren in Calgary, Aaron, Tamara, Jeff, and Andrea Lee; and her great-granddaughter Ocea. Marian will be sadly missed by her sister Luella (Lewis) Czech; and sisters-in-law, Margaret Cullen, all of Brandon, MB and Mavis Cullen of Killarney; and many nieces, nephews and friends. AUCHSTAETTER, Mabel "Peggy" November 29, 1914 - February 3, 2008 Mabel "Peggy" Auchstaetter, a proud Canadian and Icelander, passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2008 at the age of 93 years. Peggy was born on November 29, 1914 in Arborg, MB to Icelandic Pioneers and her strong work ethic continued throughout her life. She was a member of the Leif Eiriksson Icelandic Club of Calgary (LEIC). Peggy was named an Honorary Member in 1994 and received an Honorary Membership to the Icelandic National League in 2001. A much loved matriarch of the family and the void she will leave will be felt forever. Peggy is survived by her daughter Valerie (Stan) Sampson; her four grandchildren, Scott Patrick Sampson, Hayley Joy (Terry) Carter, Carla Dawn (Michael) Burger, and Kristy Lee Auchstaetter. RSINGLETON, COURTNEY LEIGH ESTES - Courtney Leigh Estes Singleton passed away on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, in Fresno, Calif., with her husband and mother by her side, after a courageous year-long battle with brain cancer. She was 32 and is survived by husband, Duane Singleton; father, Robert (Jura) Estes; mother, Lynda Chambers; grandmother, Louise Thomason; aunt, Becky (Jerry) Hollis; brother, Todd (Sandy) Estes; sister, Tami Estes; niece, Madeline Estes; nephews, Tyler Estes, Hunter Nunns and Ryan Nunns; also her favourite (and only) cousin, Cathy (Joey) Coy and her boys. Courtney was born in Torrance, Calif., and grew up in southern California, until moving to St. Andrews in the mid-1980s. She attended school in St. Andrews and briefly went to RCS Netherwood in Rothesay, N.B., Courtney started travelling at a very young age, flying between New Brunswick and California or Florida in her teens. She then lived in Florida and Texas for a few years, always returning to St. Andrews to re-group and recharge herself. She attended NBCC St. Andrews, taking the Hospitality Course, which seemed a natural fit for her vibrant personality. Her love of travel and new places took her from Florida to Columbia, Aruba, Mexico and Italy, in addition to many of the states. She recently returned to California with her dog, Bella, by her side, to be close to her ailing grandmother; married the love of her life, Duane; and was so proud of her success in pursuing a continuing career of management of an upscale restaurant. Courtney's mantra during the last year of her short life was "Live, Laugh, and Love" and she did all of these to the fullest. Her last trips home to St. Andrews and Dallas were filled with laughter and love, joyous reunions with family and close friends, and she treasured every hug and embrace. All of the good days were filled with confidence and plans for the future, thus inspiring her friends to be closer to their loved ones and to appreciate life more. Courtney has left a large hole in our lives. A memorial service will be held at the St. Andrews Anglican Church, St. Andrews, N.B., on Feb. 23, 2008 at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow in the church hall. FERGUSON, SHARON MARGARET Sharon Margaret Ferguson of Hanwell, NB. passed away at her home on February 1, 2008 after a long illness. Born in Fredericton, she was the daughter of Barbara (LaPointe) Blunston and the late Charles Blunston, and wife of Frederick H. Ferguson. Fredericton will remember Sharon as the Co-director of the Fredericton Food Bank. Over the years, she helped many people in our city through a difficult time by providing access to clothing, food and above all else, a non-judgmental shoulder to lean on. She was an active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Fredericton and took part in many of their community programs. She is survived by her husband, Frederick H. Ferguson; and her mother, Barbara E. Blunston; her children, Susan Steen, Sabrina Harnish (Scott) and her son Daniel Fowler (Mary), all of Fredericton; her stepdaughters, Dianna Hicks (Bob) of 100 Mile House, B.C. and Ramona Ferguson of Calgary, and her stepson Robert Ferguson (Barb) of Petawawa. She was the proud Nana to many grandchildren and great grand children, she was the glue that held a blended family together. She is also survived one brother, Jack Blunston of Penniac and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her best friend of 56 years, Bayna Goodspeed of Marysville. She was predeceased by her father, Charles Blunston, three brothers and one sister. She was also predeceased by two stepsons. There will be no visitation by request. WILLIAMS, GERTRUDE E. - 98 The death occurred on Jan. 31/08 of Gertrude Ethel Williams at Oakwood Terrace with family at her side. She was born and raised in Saint John, NB, moving to Nova Scotia in 1986 to be close to family. She is survived by her only child, Kathleen (Jack) Ingram, two grandsons, Lewis (Lana Crewe) and children, Christopher, Justin, Byron and Kailee; and Paul (Sarah Reaburn) and children, Jeremy, Joel and Taylor. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Alvin in 1960 and was the last surviving member of two brothers and seven sisters. A lady who enjoyed cooking and pickling, and took great pride in her knitting, crocheting and needlepoint, she will be greatly missed. A service of celebration will take place at Mattatall's Funeral Home, Portland St., Dartmouth on Feb. 4 at 2pm with Rev. Frances Drouet-Smith officiating. HOPKINS, Leona “Babe“ - Passed away at Meadows of Dorchester on Friday February 1, 2008 at the age of 91. Beloved wife of the late Frederick Hopkins (1972). Dearly loved mother of Jack (Lydia) Hopkins and Janet (Frank) Zaniol of Niagara Falls. Cherished grandmother of Jacqueline (Dan) Beaton, Fred (Yvonne) Hopkins, Leanne (Scott) Russell, Dean (Leona) Zaniol, Diane (Mike) Avakian, Lynn (Albert) Verzyl and Betty Bannerman and great-grandmother of eleven. Also surviving are several great- nieces, great-nephews and cousins in Canada and the United States. Predeceased by her parents Francis and Mary Wilhelm, her son Harry Hopkins, her brother Leroy Wilhelm and his wife Patricia and her dear friend Ernest Henry. Mrs. Hopkins had been employed for 20 years in the business office at the Greater Niagara General Hospital, retiring in 1978. She was a long time member of St. Thomas More Church in Niagara Falls and St. Joseph's Church in Stevensville. She enjoyed and participated in a lot of functions with St. Joseph's Church while living in Port Colborne until 2001 when she returned to Niagara Falls. She was also a lifetime member of the C.W.L. and was a cribbage team player for a number of years. BECKETT, Gloria Jessie - Long time Mattawa resident Gloria Beckett died at the Mattawa General Hospital on Sunday February 3, 2008 at the age of 71 years. Gloria was the proud and loving mother of Kevin (Candace Grenier) and the dear Nan to Chris & Adrian. She passed away one day before the birth of her granddaughter Faith. She will also be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her close friend Jim Cotnam. First and foremost a mother and grandmother Gloria was also a dedicated and faithful member of St. Alban's Anglican Church, always ready to share her time & talents. She will be remembered as an avid scrabble player and baker. Her working life was spent in the insurance industry were she worked as a broker for many years, retiring in 2000.
