SWAN, John Stephen "Steve" Steve passed away peacefully at home on Friday, December 14, 2007 surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife Loretta (Guerra) Swan, by his sister Ann Kramp and her husband Dave of Spokane, Washington, and her brother Jim Swan and his wife Mary Jane of Edmonton, AB. He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Mary Swan, and by his sister Jo Swan. Special thanks to all the health care workers who cared for Steve over the past 2 1/2 years. Henry Emmerson Seaman Henry Emmerson Seaman, Brookland Street, Sydney, passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Born December 14, 1912, in Silver City, New Mexico, USA, to the late Job H. and Ruth R. (Trenholm) Seaman. Shortly after birth, Henry moved with his family to Amherst, NS, where he grew up and graduated from Cumberland County Academy. He then attended Acadia University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (major Chemistry) in 1933. Upon graduation, he engaged in farming and lumbering in the Barronsfield and Minudie areas of Cumberland County. He served in the RCAF for the last three years of the Second World War, teaching calculus to the air crew for some of that time and later with Classified Security work in Ottawa. Upon discharge, he resumed farming and lumbering up until 1955 when he decided to find another occupation. He then spent several years with the Nova Scotia Department of Public Works, followed by other projects with an architectural firm in Halifax. His final employment was contract manager for Stott Corporation in Sydney, NS. He is survived by his son, J. William "Bill" (Doris), Moncton, NB; daughter, Ruth M. (Crampton H. "Dusty") Helms, Morrisotown, Tennessee, USA; son, Job A., Sydney, NS; grandchildren, Wayne (Carol) Seaman, Marilyn (Lorenzo) Seaman-Gri and Mark (Susan) Seaman, Debora (Anthony) Long, Crampton Jr. (Mary), Thomas (Lucy) and Patrick (Dena) Helms; and ten great-grandchildren. Besides his wife of over 62 years, Marjorie "Penny" (Morris) Seaman (1997), he was predeceased by his sister, Anne (Porter) (Blackett) in 1978 and brother, John T. in 2002. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Saturday January 5, 2008 at 1 p.m. followed by a service in the chapel at 2 p.m., Pastor Dan Biggar officiating. Graveside service will be held at the family plot in Minudie Cemetery at a later date. BERRIGAN, Alyson (Aly) Marika April 22, 2002 - December 12, 2007 Alyson (Aly) Marika Berrigan, beloved daughter of James and Susan and cherished sister of Amanda of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at the tender age of 5 years. All Aly wanted in her short life with us was to go to school, make friends, and ride the school bus. She accomplished them all. A favourite time of hers was the family trip to Disneyland which put a whole new meaning to the word "Magical". McDOUGALL, Donna Alexandra March 10, 1944 - December 13, 2007 Donna Alexandra McDougall, beloved daughter of the late Alexander (Mac) and Mae Elizabeth McHattie (Ditto); loving mother of son Michael; daughter-in-law Jennifer; ecstatic grandmother of Dylan; tolerant sister to Donald William and loved sister-in-law Judith McHattie; aunt and cousin to family members and good friend of many, too numerous to mention; and of course, her loving best friend Psycho Kitty, Ki, passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2007 at the age of 63 years. Donna obtained her BA at the University of Alberta, BSW and MSW at the University of Calgary. During her successful career she worked with Toronto Children's Aid Society, Calgary Family Services and the YWCA of Calgary - Sheriff King Home. She was a supervisor, counsellor, mentor, teacher and guide to many. In all of her positions she held compassion and wisdom for everyone. She will be missed by all who knew her. Donna loved life, treasured her family and friends and enjoyed living in Toronto, Ottawa, Holland, Massachusetts and Calgary. In the last few months of her life she chose to seize every moment with love and laughter, connecting to nature in her backyard and her river. This was living in the flow. Her courage and humility is an inspiration to all of us. Our community has lost a brilliant, loving, feisty, compassionate elder with a wicked wit, who eased the suffering of many and always championed the cause of human rights. ZDANIAK, Vera (Kobelansky). It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Vera Zdaniak on December 1, 2007 at the age of eighty-six. Born in Montreal on September 3, 1921, she was the beloved wife of the late Michael. She will be greatly missed by her children, Sylvia (Ian Duff), Dennis (Joanne Derepentigny) and Linda (Pierre Ravick), grandchildren, Melissa (Jose), Sarah, Jonathan (Karine), her dear great-grandchild, Bianca, as well as brothers, John (Gisele) and Ted (Sandra). WEARY, Martin. Son of the late Clarence Weary and Lillian Martin, at the Brockville General Hospital on December 12, 2007, in his eighty-third year following a long ilness. He leaves his wife, Madelaine Grogan (nee Leblanc), his brother Bill (Katherine Gray) of Morin Heights, QC, his sister Barbara (Dave Cullen) of Kelowna, BC, many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Martin served on Corvettes in the North Atlantic with Royal Canadian Navy during WWII. He has been a long time resident of the Laurentians and will be missed by his friends and family. LONG, Helen Elaine (nee Beehler) At the age of 91, Helen ended her struggle with Alzheimers by quietly slipping away on Sunday, December 9, 2007. Predeceased by her brothers Charles, Bill (William) and Frank (Francis) Beehler and her sister Beatrice (Kert/Houlahan). Helen will be deeply missed by her surviving family including her sisters Leah (Connor), Eileen (Hall) and Lillian (Girolami) and their families, as well as her many friends. A native of Brockville, Ontario, Helen was born February 23, 1916. She lived and worked in Ottawa, Washington, D.C., Guatemala City and the Bahamas before retiring to Ottawa. Her sense of fun and gift of friendship will be remembered by all who knew her, including her former neighbours and friends in Amberwood and Stittsville where she lived for many years. PLAYFAIR SHEPARD, Diana At Fairmount Nursing Home in Kingston, Ontario on Friday, 7 Dec 2007. Diana was born in Port Arthur, ON, on May 18, 1939. Her parents, Walter and Mae Jarvis, gave her a happy upbringing, filling the house with friends and piano and singing. She was an excellent student, and became a debater in high school. She taught English, history, geography and even mathematics at high schools in Thunder Bay, Toronto, Ottawa and Kingston, rhetoric at the University of Illinois, debating, writing and speech making at St. Lawrence College in Kingston, and ESL at RMC. Her departure from this world came after a seven year battle with frontal-temporal dementia. She is much loved and missed by Terry, her husband of 45 years, their daughter Katie McCall and her husband Richard, grandson Matthew McCall, their daughter Susan Shepard, her sister Mary Jarvis, her brother Paul Jarvis and his wife Joan, her cousin Sue MacLatchie, and by many other family members and by many friends. Special thanks go to all the caregivers who helped over the years, with those at Fairmount leading the list with the excellent care they provided in the past year and a half. In a category by herself, Natalie Larin sang with Diana almost every morning, much to their mutual delight. A service will be held at St. Mark's Anglican Church in Barriefield at 1 pm on December 20. A gathering in the Parish Hall will follow. SMITH, Ruth Marie Adored daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Ruth left us Thursday, December 13th, 2007. Born on March 4th, 1934 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Ruth is the first child of Anne (nee Nicholson) and Elias Smith. She married Gerry Robillard in 1956 and not long after Diane, Paul, and Joanne completed Ruth's family. Predeceased by her beloved daughter Diane Anson and her sister Caroline Milks. Left to celebrate Ruth's life are her mother Anne, sister Ruby Rading, Peter Armstrong (Ruth's soulmate of the past 24 years), son Paul Robillard (Jo-Anne), and her daughter and best friend Joanne Skof (Dave). Ruth will be deeply missed by her step-grandson, Matthew McDowell (Kate), and her great grandson Alexander Elias McDowell. Fondly remembered by her step-children Christopher Armstrong (Suzanne) and Isobel Armstrong. Our family will always remember the many fun family outings that the three Smith Girls planned and carried out with style and panache! OBITUARY AGNES ACKERMAN (nee HUNTER) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Agnes on December 11, 2007 at the age of eighty-six years. Much loved wife for sixty-three years of the late Joe, and loving mother of Marlene (Bob Abrey) of Oshawa, Pauline (Scott Birks) of Pointe-Claire, and favourite son, Michael (Janet MacGillivray) of Dorval. Nanny will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Renee (Jason Hampton), David, Sara (David Sherman), Melanie, Matthew, Evan and her great-grandson, Aiden. She will be greatly missed by her sister, Pat (Earle Jones), sisters-in-law Grace Bennett and Noreen Padvaiskas (Peter), her many nieces and nephews and dear friends. Agnes was the recipient of the Governor-General's Caring Canadian Award. Her kindness, generosity and spirit have left us with wonderful memories of good times and laughter shared. Her love of family and children will be remembered for generations to come. OBITUARY DORIS CANNON HUGHES 1925 - 2007 A teacher, a mother, a tender heart. Passed away December 12, 2007 after a sudden illness. She was the wife of the late George Hilliard Hughes and mother of Margaret, Anne, George Jr. (Lori) and Charles (Isabelle), fun-loving grandmother of Stephanie, Christine, Felicia, Tristan and Zachary. Originally from North Carolina, Doris leaves behind sisters Mary-Louise (Walter) and Sarah (James), sisters-in-law Doris and Lucille, as well as many cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends. Doris had Southern hospitality and Northern openness. A great believer of equality and fairness to all, she was a humanitarian. Doris was known for her kindness and generosity. A woman of varied interests, she was an avid reader and budding architect. A firm believer in resolving disputes without war, Doris coined the phrase "No more Bush's, only trees, trees, trees!" In a final expression of her giving nature, Doris left her body to science to further the education of others through the Body Donor Program of McGill University. In June there is an annual commemorative service held at McGill Chapel for the families and friends of the donors and for the students who benefited from the gift.
