Jeffery Edward Michael Petrasko March 13, 1973 - October 16, 2007 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jeffery Petrasko, our beloved son, brother, nephew and friend at the age of 34. He will be forever remembered by his loving mother Zenia, father Edward; brother James (Kristine); all the extended family and his many close friends. Jeffery will also be sadly missed by his cat Grumpy and the “cousins “ Kali, BeBe, Biscuit and Precious. He was born, raised and lived in the North Kildonan area of Winnipeg. As a young person he attended Maple Leaf Elementary School, Chief Peguis Jr. High School and the River East Collegiate High School. Jeffery was a very passionate, sensitive, adventurous and spontaneous person. He had a vibrant love for life. He loved to travel and hang out with his family and friends; and over the past year has had many opportunities to do so. Along with his loving heart he had the most creative mind. He demonstrated amazing creativity with his art, writing, poetry and music in his life and his work. Most recently he had excelled in computer graphics and film making opportunities. His love for electronics and graphics began at a very young age, which led to his great successes. We want everyone to know that he loved his family and friends with all his heart and that his happiest moments were spent with those he cherished the most. Special thanks to all the family and friends who spent time with him over the last two weeks of his life sharing special memories with him and surrounding him with love. Cremation has taken place. BERGLUND, Wayne Maurice May 1, 1944 - October 18, 2007 It is with great sadness that the family of Wayne Maurice Berglund announces his passing on Thursday, October 18, 2007. He leaves to mourn his death his wife Theresa Berglund; parents Mildred and William Berglund; son Donald (Jackie) Berglund; grandchildren Tara, Amber and Troy Berglund; as well as his extended family across Canada. Wayne was predeceased by his son Wesley Berglund. Wayne was born in Dryden, Ontario. He spent a short time in Cranbrook before moving to Calgary. After receiving his Auto Mechanic Diploma from SAIT, Wayne's career was spent in sales, Council for the MD of Foothills in Subdivision Consulting, and most recently Real Estate. The rest of his time was spent with his family, maintaining the acreage, travelling and community activities. MICHEL G. LAMOUREUX 1947 - 2007 J'ai beaucoup aimé et j'ai été beaucoup aimé Le monde a perdu un homme merveilleux le samedi 6 octobre 2007. Michel est décédé avec grâce et sérénité à la maison, entouré de son "équipe” dirigée par Dre Lisa (Aldridge). Il sera grandement regretté, mais jamais oublié par son épouse Janet et ses fils Patrick et Alain (Erin Barclay). Il fut précédé dans la mort par son père Joseph Lamoureux et sa soeur Marcelle (Michel Bédard). Fils adoré de Gracia (Boileau); cher frère de Gilles (Madeleine Labelle), Georges (Myrna McCormick), Roger (Françoise Leroux), Pierre (Suzanne Brazeau), et Serge (feu Thérèse Labrosse). Michel a savouré chaque instant de sa vie et par le fait même a marqué la vie de plusieurs nièces, neveux, amis et collègues de travail, à qui il manquera grandement. Il enseigna les mathématiques avec passion à plusieurs élèves avant de travailler comme coordinateur de projet, consultant au ministère de l'Éducation et finalement en tant qu'administrateur. Ses forces furent grandement diminuées par l'atrophie musculaire de sa colonne vertébrale, ce qui l'amena à quitter prématurément la profession qu'il aimait tant. Malgré tout, il continua à faire du bénévolat, et il reçu le Prix du mérite civique de la Ville d'Ottawa "2002” et une reconnaissance spéciale du Conseil des écoles publiques d'Ottawa-Carleton (CEPOC). La famille de Michel désire remercier sincèrement tous les professionnels de la santé qui l'on assisté durant ce dure combat contre le cancer du colon et plus particulièrement le Dr Jonker, Pascale, Darlene Devon, Sylvie Fortier St Pierre, Cathy Langtry, Caroline, et Dre Aldridge ainsi que l'équipe des soins palliatifs du Campus Civic de l'hôpital d'Ottawa. BURNS, Barbara Courtright (Coffman) November 11, 1915 - October 15, 2007 Barbara Burns of Calgary passed away on Monday, October 15, 2007 at the age 91 years. Mrs. Barbara Burns was born November 11, 1915 in Larkspur, CA. Graduating from the University of California at Berkeley, she went on to become the Social Director for several five star hotels including the Awhahnee in Yosemite Park, the Royal Hawaiian in Honolulu, HI, the Beverly Hills Hotel, and the Lake Arrowhead Lodge and Inn. Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Barbara enlisted at first call with the United States Navy. She received officers training at Smith College in Northampton, MA and was commissioned an Ensign. Barbara was stationed at the San Francisco and San Diego Naval District until her honourable discharge as Lt. J. G. (Junior Grade), in 1944. After her marriage to Earl Coffman, Barbara assisted her husband in the hosting duties at the Desert Inn. She served on numerous charitable and social organizations including the United Way and the Palm Valley School Board of Trustees. After winning several elections for the position of Director at the Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, Barbara became President of the Association of California Hospital Districts. She resigned this position in 1972 shortly after her second marriage to Richard Burns of Calgary, AB. In addition, Mrs. Barbara Burns will be fondly remembered for her active participation in social and sporting events throughout Calgary. Her volunteer efforts and coordination contributed to the numerous "Heritage Day" events and activities at Heritage Park. She was subsequently bestowed an "Honorary Membership". She was an avid golfer at the Canyon Meadows Golf Club and an enthusiastic tennis and bridge player at the Glencoe Club. She also held membership at the Petroleum Club and Ranchmen's Club. Barbara is survived by her daughter Barbara Lynn of Palm Springs, CA; and her three grandsons Lawrence Lingbloom, Jason Bourassa and Charles Russell Coffman. She is further survived by her stepsons John and Dennis Burns of Calgary, AB, Michael Burns of North Vancouver, BC, and their families. Barbara was predeceased by her first husband Owen Earl Coffman, a prominent Palm Springs businessman and owner of the eminent Desert Inn, by her second husband Richard John Burns, QC, an esteemed lawyer of the Calgary law firm Macleod Dixon; by her son Charles Coffman of Palm Springs, CA; by her daughter Martha Coffman-King of Kelowna, BC; and by her grandson Charles Derringer Moran. Mr. Boss was retired from the Public Relations Department of the University of Ottawa, he was known throughout Canada for his work as a war correspondent during WWII and the Korean War and was a member ot the Canadian News Hall of Fame. BIENERT, Matthew Ryan April 9, 1979 - October 13, 2007 Matthew Bienert, beloved husband of Laurie Bienert (nee Sukovieff), passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the age of 28 years. Profoundly missed is the smile that dazzled everyone it shined upon; the compassion, sincerity, warmth, and optimism always felt by his presence; and the enthusiasm, brilliance and passion of our Smiling Sparkle of the skies and our hearts. Forever remembered is the boundless laughter and ever-present joy of a son and brother; and the love, moments and adventures shared in the strongest, deepest bond of friendship, life and spirit with a husband. Matthew was born in Calgary, AB on April 9, 1979 and from the age of four years old and on he grew up in Springbank, AB. After graduating from Springbank Community High School in 1997 with highest honours, Matthew went on to pursue his lifelong passion of becoming a pilot. Matthew earned his Canadian Private Pilot's License in August of 1997 and, with a stellar performance, received his Professional Commercial Pilot Diploma from Mount Royal College in 1999. After attaining a United States Commercial Pilot Certificate and a Certified Flight Instructor Certificate, Matthew graduated Cum Laude from The University of North Dakota John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics in Commercial Aviation in December of 2002. In 2007 Matthew earned his float plane rating and began flying float plane charters and teaching other pilots how to fly floats on Vancouver Island, BC. Matthew's strength was unyieldingly demonstrated in the advent of challenge, instinctively and persistently turning adversity into accomplishment. Matthew, with relentless perseverance and skill, fulfilled his passion as a successful, phenomenal pilot. On the happiest day of their lives, Matthew married his best friend and true love, Laurie, on August 26, 2006 in Calgary, AB. After spending many wonderful days together in Calgary, Matthew and Laurie moved to Vancouver Island in April of 2007. Cherished are the many laughs and the love Laurie shared with her "Smiley Eyes". Matthew will always be treasured and remembered by his loving wife, Laurie Bienert; parents, Neil and Gailene Bienert; twin brother, Jonathan Bienert; sister and brother-in-law, Tasha Bienert and Allan Horwood; parents-in-law, Rick and Donna Sukovieff; three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Cara and Peter Haar and their children Benjamin and Arianna (goddaughter), Christie and Craig Skimmings and their children Tessa and Joshua (godson), and Jenny Sukovieff. MELVILLE, Ed March 30, 1933 - October 18, 2007 Edmond John (Ed) Melville, beloved husband of Judi Melville of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2007 at the age of 74 years. Ed was born on March 30, 1933 in Drumheller, Alberta. He was an accomplished hockey player and received a hockey scholarship to Colorado College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology in 1959. After graduation, Ed returned to Alberta to continue his career in the oil patch. Ed's fifty plus years in the oil patch saw him work as a Mud Engineer and a Drilling Superintendent, but spent most of his career as a Drilling Contractor. He finished his career at BICO Faster Drilling Tools. He married Judi Strandquist on June 24, 1967 and together they raised two boys. Ed was very involved with amateur hockey in Calgary with the Southwest Athletic Association (SWAA) and Calgary AA Council. He was one of the founders of the Calgary Junior "A" Royals Hockey Club of the AJHL, and served as President until his passing. He was an honorary lifetime member of SWAA. He was a member APEGGA and Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club. Ed is survived by Judi, his loving wife of forty years; sons and daughter-in-law, Billy and Joanne and Eddie Jr.; and granddaughter Jessica, all of Calgary. Jerome (Jerry) Whai Chong Afoon July 20, 1938 - October 18, 2007 Peacefully and surrounded by his family, Jerome (Jerry) Whai Chong Afoon, passed away on October 18th, 2007 at 7:39 p.m. after a long courageous battle with Parkinson’s and Cancer. He is survived by his wife, Cathy (nee Rankel); children, Brandy and Sean Afoon (Colleen, Alex, Matthew, Keely); first wife, Barb; father-in-law, Fred Rankel; brothers, Archie, Steven and sister, Teresa from Trinidad, West Indies and numerous family members in the West Indies and United States. Jerry was predeceased by brothers, Sam and Edgar, parents, John Afoon and Carmen Magloire. Jerry was born in Piarco, Trinidad on July 20th, 1938. He came to Canada in 1967 and found employment in the fast food industry and health care before finding his long term position with C. N. Rail. He married his second wife, Cathy on September 20th, 1984 and made many life long friends in his various hobbies which include; body building, fishing, music, photography, going to the casino, story telling, cooking and traveling to such places as; Rio, Hawaii, Mexico, Vegas, Jamaica, Trinidad and Florida. You were always there when we needed you, No task too great or small. With a loving heart and a willing hand, For us you did it all. Thank you for the years you’ve given us, And for the time we shared. We only pray that when you left us, You know how much we cared.
