HARRIS, Charles-Henri (1914 - 2007) Peacefully in his 94th year on September 16, 2007 at the Ottawa (General) Hospital. Beloved husband of 66 years of Claire (nee Beland). The last survivor of the 18 children of the late Alfred Harris and the late Malvina St-Laurent. Loving father of Gordon (Ann Colfer) and the Most Reverend Robert Harris, Bishop of Saint John, New Brunswick. Loving grandfather of Crista (David May) and Alexa. Also survived by many nephews and nieces. During his long, happy life, Mr. Harris was a founding member (1931) of the celebrated radio show, Les Montagnards Laurentiens, (CHRC, Quebec City), a munitions factory supervisor (Canadian Defence Industries), a chef and pastry man (CPR) and a cooking instructor and kitchen manager (Correctional Services Canada). OBITUARY JOAN HELEN HANKS October 1925 - September 2007 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear Mother, Sister, Grandmother and great-grandmother Joan Helen Hanks. Joan was predeceased by her first husband Orville Charles Winters in 1959 and her second husband Norman Hanks in 1998. Joan is survived by her children Dennis Winters and wife Darylene, and Heather (Hanks) Cote and husband Simon. Joan is also survived by her grandchildren Josh (Shannon), Nathan (Anita) and Paula Winters. Great-grandchildren are Devin, Katie, Danny, Max and Sarah all of Alberta. She is also survived by her Aunt Selenia Emiry of Ontario and her sisters Betty, Dot, and Brother John all of Ontario. Joan is also predeceased by brothers Wallace, Lloyd and Donald. She is also survived by sister-in-laws Joyce and Dorothy (Winnipeg) and brother-in law George (Montreal) and numerous nieces and nephews and friends. Joan was born in Espanola, Ontario on October 16, 1925. While living in Montreal with her family, Joan was devoted to her work as a Real Estate agent. They retired in Winnipeg in the early 1990's. Joan was known for her active life at the curling rink where she loved to curl, and in later life supported curling by watching the games. Throughout Joan's life she has played many games of bridge with her many friends and relatives, and for awhile enjoyed her gardening and flowers and her many crossword puzzles. Our Mom, Grandmother and friend will be greatly missed and not forgotten. HINDS, Walter Jr. (Wally). Died peacefully at the Lakeshore General Hospital at the age of ninety-five. Son of the late Walter and Edith Hinds. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Christine, brother Harold and sister Margaret. He is survived by his daughter Joan, former son-in-law John and much adored grandchildren Paul, Penelope and David. Following wartime service with the Winnipeg Grenadiers. Wally worked for Air Canada until his retirement. Residing first in St-James, Manitoba, later transferred to Montreal the family took up residence in Roxboro, Qc. The family acknowledges with gratitude the friendship and help from friends and neighbours which allowed Wally to continue to reside at home until a few days before his death. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at 3 p.m. at Rideau Funeral Home, 4275 Sources blvd, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, (514) 685-3344. The ashes will be taken to Winnipeg by family members in the spring of 2008. Wally will be interred in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens to lie beside his wife Christine. SATHER, Hazel September 20, 1906 - September 15, 2007 Hazel Sather passed away quietly in her sleep while in the care of Newport Harbour Care Centre five days from reaching her 101st birthday. Hazel, one of fourteen children, was born in Landa, North Dakota to Norwegian immigrants and later came with her family to farm in Saskatchewan. She finished her schooling and attained a Nursing Certificate in Saskatchewan. In 1933, she married Casper Sather and raised four children. The family moved to Alberta in 1942 where they farmed. Later they owned a ladies retail store in various Alberta centres. Hazel leaves to mourn her daughters, Norma Appley of Los Angeles, Doreen (Duane) Neville of Calgary; her son, Glen (Anne) Sather of New York City and Banff; a son-in-law, Alex Forster of Calgary; and three sisters, Alice, Alma (Cameron), and Lillian (Bill). She also leaves eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Hazel is predeceased by her husband Casper (1968), daughter Rachel (2002), and son-in-law Marvin Appley (2004). The family extends their sincere thanks to those who provided Hazel with tender loving care. SCHNEIDER, Leontina "Tina" May 28, 1919 - September 14, 2007 Leontina Schneider "Tina" of Calgary passed away peacefully at the George Boyack Centre on Friday, September 14, 2007 at the age of 88 years. She was born in Tuttle, Kidder County, North Dakota and immigrated to Canada with her family. Tina and Sam's faith in God began when Tina recovered from a serious illness. They were dedicated to each other, their family and the church. BELVEDERE, Antonio (Tony) Belvedere - Passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 16, 2007 in his 81st year, after a short bout with cancer. He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife of 59 years Carolina (nee Maddalena). Loving and proud father of Raffaele (Carole), Mario (Patricia), Rico (Cindy) and Marg. Dear grandfather of Tannia (Marcel), Damien, Alicia, Ryan and Jessica. Antonio is survived by his twin brother Carmine, sister Filomena Sergnese and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Federico and sisters Cesina Pizzacalla, Carmella Colliti and Olga Iocca. Antonio was born in Castropignano, Italy on March 22, 1927 and immigrated to Canada in 1951. He successfully completed his apprenticeship with E.S. Fox and became a master plumber, working on many construction projects in the Niagara Region. In 1974 he joined the staff of the Welland Hospital, where he was known affectionately as “Tony the Plumber”. He worked at the hospital until his retirement in 1992. Tony had many passions, but his greatest was music. He was a long time supporter of the Welland Port Colborne Concert Association. He enjoyed playing his clarinet with the “Rose City Dreamers” and singing with the Italian Choir at St. Mary's Church and the Coro Folcloristico. He also enjoyed listening to opera and classical music. Tony was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and a supporter of the Welland Junior B team, rarely missing a Sunday night game at the Welland Arena. He was also a member of the Thursday night bowling league at Bowl o Rama. Tony will be sadly missed by his family and many friends, including those at his cottage on Belleview Beach. The family will receive their friends at J.J. Patterson & Sons Funeral Residence 19 Young Street, Welland on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. where a Vigil will be held at 3 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. MILLER, Blema nee Cooper - In her 97th year on Sunday, September 16, 2007. Blema Miller, dear wife of the late Abe Miller. Cherished mother and mother-in-law of Jack and Mary Jane Miller, and Bob and the late Helene Kenigsberg. Remembered fondly by her grandchildren Alan and Shawna, Dan and Paula, Michael and as a loving great grandmother to Abigail, Ivy and Hunter. Dear sister of the late Yetta Insky, Fay Hyman, and Sydney Cooper. Born in Montreal December 15, 1910 to Asher and Annie Cooper, Blema was a pioneer, the first Jewish High School teacher in Montreal. She and Abe led very active lives in Cornwall, both within the Beth El Synagogue and in the larger community. After Abe's death she moved back to Montreal. A born teacher, she taught mathematics until she retired, then tutored high school students into her mid 80's. A fine bridge player and willing volunteer of her time and talents, she had a wide circle of friends in Montreal and Toronto, and latterly the residents and staff at the Balmoral Club as well as a very special group of caregivers. She will be sorely missed by many people. ATYEO, Gene M. - “Precious In the Sight of the Lord is the Death of His Saints.” - Psalms 116:15 At Bluewater Health Palliative Care, Sarnia, on Saturday, September 15, 2007, surrounded by his loving family and comforting hymns, our beloved father Gene Mitchell Atyeo, age 85 passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Saviour who he loved and longed to see. Born in Weyburn, Sask. son of the late Charles and Sadie Atyeo, he was employed at Holmes Foundry for 44 years, retiring in 1984. Gene was a pilot in Squadron 101 during WW II and was shot down over Germany in 1944. He was a POW until the war ended. He was a respected elder in the assembly of Christians meeting at the Gospel Hall with a true shepherd's heart and was a faithful servant of the Lord. GROSHAK, Alex - It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Alex Groshak, on August 23, 2007, at Seven Oaks Hospital. Alex leaves to cherish his memory his four sons, Michael (Yvonne), Stanley (Anita), Steve (Kim) and Robert (Sue); sister Anne (Theran) Armstrong; and brother Stanley (Jean); his grandchildren, Jocelyn (Nelson), Laura, Alex, Alysha and Susan (Billy); his great-granddaughters, Jessica and Alexis; plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Alex was predeceased by his wife Olga in 2004; and his parents Mike and Angelica. Alex was born in Menzie, Manitoba, on October 15, 1924. He settled with his parents in Ontario, living in London and Kirkland Lake. He met our mother in Toronto and continued a fruitful life of 53 years until her passing. We all knew that he missed her terribly. He belonged to a great many organizations, but he valued his cultural community and served on the executives of many Ukrainian organizations, especially the Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Br. 141, where he received a lifetime membership in 1990. Alex was also involved in the promotion of Ukrainian music. While working for various record companies, he saw that Canadian Ukrainian music was being played at live weddings, barn dances and other social functions in Manitoba but was not available for people to listen to in the homes. From there he formed Regis Records and the first recording of Canadian Ukrainian music featuring Jim Gregerash presenting the Ukrainian Wedding March was born, which is still popular today. A lot of the work that Alex accomplished can be found in the Bohdan Medwisky Folklore at the University of Alberta. Gardening and fishing were his relaxations. Above all Alex valued family and was most content when his family was gathered around him. We will remember him for his strength in the face of adversity, his integrity, generosity, sense of humour, his genuine interest in other people and loving nature. He will always be there with us. In accordance with Alex's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service has already taken place with Rev. Canon Walter Klimchuk officiating. We would like to thank the workers of homecare, especially Norma; the staff of Unit 5 Medicine, 3rd Floor, Seven Oaks Hospital for all their caring. Adrienne and Dorothy for keeping Dad involved in various projects. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of one's choice. THOMPSON, John (Jack) Allen February 4, 1941 - September 15, 2007 Jack passed away at 66 years of age at the Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary, Alberta after a long battle with Pulmonary Lung disease. Jack grew up in Mountain View, Alberta where he excelled in scouting, eventually earning his Queen Scout Award. Jack was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and died with a strong and enduring testimony of Jesus Christ. He served an honorable L.D.S. mission after which he served five years in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed for some time in Okinowa, Japan. Jack made many wonderful friends throughout his life and career because of his outgoing, friendly and caring personality. He was well loved by his family, neighbors, business acquaintances and Church associates. Jack made all those who came in contact with him feel important. Jack loved to work and worked hard all his life excelling in sales and kitchen design; something he continued with until his death. He was also very well known for his beautiful "Mario Lanza" singing voice and enjoyed playing the lead part for "The Music Man" put on in Calgary in the late 1960's. Jack is survived by four daughters and one stepson as well as his siblings, Patricia (Bob) Sabin, Lorna (Lowell) Kendrick, Robert (Kelli) Thompson, Paul (Dawn) Thompson, Cheryl (Eugene) Davidsen. LAWRENCE, Norman (Norm) Lyle April 24, 1919 - September 14, 2007 Norman (Norm) Lyle Lawrence, a proud native Calgarian, passed away at the Rockyview General Hospital on Friday, September 14, 2007 after a brief illness, at the age of 88 years. Norm was born and raised in the Mount Pleasant area and lived most of his life in north Calgary. After leaving high school in the 1930s, Norm worked at Robin Hood Flour Mills in Calgary and joined the militia with the 13th Machine Gun Battalion, which was later amalgamated with the Calgary Regiment, to form the 14th Canadian Army Tank Regiment (Calgary Tanks). Early in the Second World War, Norm volunteered to join the regular force, serving overseas with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps (RCOC) and later, with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RCEME). It was while he was in England that he met Brenda, whom he married in 1944 at Prittlewell in Essex, England. Shortly after the war, Norm and Brenda built their first house in northwest Calgary and became the loving parents to Carol, Gary and Lynne, and some years later to Robert "Bob" and Mark. After the war, Norm worked for Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), and later, for the Royal Mail (now Canada Post) as a postman. While working as a postman, Norm took night courses at what is now known as SAIT, becoming a fully qualified draftsman. Norm worked in the oil patch as a draftsman for over thirty-five years before retiring from British Petroleum (BP). He was an extremely loving and kind parent and husband, as well as a sweet and exceedingly gentle soul. He devotedly supported his children's endeavours, no matter what they were. He loved to watch football and hockey. The latter of which he played into his late sixties. During the 1930s, he was a member of the North Hill Blizzards football team. His other interests included travelling, gardening, and carpentry. In later years, he was heavily committed to personally providing excellent care for Brenda, as she became more and more disabled. He was also a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 264. Norm is survived by his loving wife of nearly sixty-three years, Brenda; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Bill Hern, and Lynne and Keith Crowder; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Gary Lawrence, Robert "Bob" Lawrence, and Mark and Gert Lawrence; daughter-in-law, Maureen Farish and her husband, Blair; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is also sadly missed by numerous nieces and nephews in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, as well as cousins and other relatives in Ontario, the United Kingdom and France. Norm was predeceased by his father, Frederick (Fred) in 1970, his mother, Laura, in 1977, brother, Stanley (Stan), in 1999, nephew, Greg, in 2004, and most recently, a second brother, Denis, in 2006. A Memorial Service will be held at CALGARY CREMATORIUM CHAPEL, 3219 - 4 Street N.W. (within the valley of Queen's Park Cemetery) on Friday, September 21, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. Placement of urn will follow in the Field of Honour at Queen's Park Cemetery.
