She has lived most of her life in Timmins, however she did spend some time in Western Canada. Irene had a passion for her family, she cherished all the members. Irene also had a love for dancing, her eyes would sparkle when she could dance or even thought about it. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 21st, 2007 from St.Anthony's Cathedral. Interment will follow at a later date with her late husband Edward Longpré. SHAW, Christopher James January 6, 1984 - September 14, 2007 It is with deep sadness that we announce that on Friday, September 14, 2007 Christopher James Shaw of Carseland, Alberta passed away at home surrounded by loved ones. Chris enjoyed playing baseball, hunting and fishing. He discovered a passion for playing pool and would take anybody's ten dollars in a game of poker. Diagnosed with cancer at nineteen, Chris became a soldier. His courage, strength, and humour carried everyone who knew him. To know him was to love him. He leaves behind his parents, Grant and Karen Shaw and his younger brother and best friend Curtis Shaw. Welcoming him to heaven are his grandmother Jean Shaw, uncle Glenn Shaw, and cousin Talia-Rae Benko. A special thank you to Laurie, Dawn, and everyone who contributed to making his final wishes come true. GAIL DURLAND So Loved by So Many Born Beverley Gail Cumberland on September 10, 1937, Gail died on September 17, 2007 just a week after her 70th birthday, the cause a brain tumour. She was born in Hamiota, Manitoba and grew up in Penticton, BC. Gail earned a BS in Nursing from UBC in 1960 and went on to practice at Stanford University Hospital in Palo Alto, California where she became Head Nurse of the Cancer Research Ward. In 1964 she married Leigh Durland, an international banker from New York. She continued nursing as a Supervisor at New York University Hospital until their first child, William, was born. In 1968 the family moved from Brooklyn N.Y. to Hongkong where they had a second son, Mark. The family went on to live in Taipei, and later Tokyo with Scarsdale, NY as their base. Subsequently, Gail and Leigh lived in Manila and Abidjan, Ivory Coast. In between assignments abroad Gail studied extensively at New York's Parsons School of Design and later the State University of New York where, in 1992, she was awarded a Masters in Public Health. She put that knowledge to work on an AIDS project in the Ivory Coast and later on community health projects in upstate New York where the family had acquired a dilapidated farmhouse. Always full of ideas, enthusiasm and energy, Gail threw herself into everything she did with confidence and competence. She supervised and worked on the complete renovation of their farm property, as she had done earlier in varying degrees with several other houses. She also lived for long periods with Leigh in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and Tbilisi, Georgia. In each of the foreign countries she lived in Gail was highly active in community organizations most particularly the College Women's Association of Japan, the University Women's Club in Manila and Habitat for Humanity in Columbia County, NY. She never failed to have strong views on political matters and, while ever an enthusiastic Canadian, became an American citizen in 1996 to enable her to vote and supplement her penchant for telling others how they might wish to vote. Gail and Leigh moved from Tbilisi to Vancouver in 2000 where she again planned and supervised the complete renovation of their current home. After that she devoted much of her energy to the Friends of the Garden of UBC's Botanical Gardens. Gail was pre-deceased by her father, Bill in 2000. Now in addition to her husband, she leaves behind her mother Madeline, sons William and Mark, the former's wife Ursula and their children Hannah and Mara, Mark's partner Cristina as well as sister Lynne and brother-in-law, Barry. HARTWELL, Lillian (nee Peterson) April 24, 1925 - September 15, 2007 - In loving memory of Lillian (Peterson) Hartwell, 82 years, who passed away Saturday, September 15, 2007 at her home. As she wished, Lillian passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, September 15th at noon. Predeceased by her husband W.J. (Jimmy) Hartwell in 1993, son Kenny in 1952, beloved parents Oliver and Sarah Jane Peterson and all six brothers and three sisters. She is survived by one son Bob (Linda), and two daughters Lynn (Michael McDonald) and Penny Jane (Lee Ladouceur). Also survived by seven grandchildren: Darin (Natalie), Ryan (Linda), Corey (Renee), Jeffrey (Jen), Rhonda (Jeff Lalonde), Sarah (Billy Frappier), Layla, and seven great-grandchildren: Ethan, McKenzie, Owen, Sydney, Jordan, Parker, Taylor, Griffin and Leven. Lillian proudly served in the Second World War in the W.R.C.N.S. stationed in Halifax and Cornwallis where she met and married Jimmy Hartwell. Both born in western Canada, they settled for a short time in Montreal, moved to Garson in 1951, then to Falconbridge in 1959. Lillian was a lifetime member of Branch 336 Falconbridge Royal Canadian Legion. She was a quiet and refined lady who devoted her life to her family. Brother-in-law to Norm and Phyllis Scott, Bob and Marg Scott, Dorothy Baines, Bruce Barry all of Point Edward and Dave Kilbreath of Sarnia. Jim was survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Percy and Isabella Knight, his sisters-in-law Margaret Kilbreath and Anne Barry and brothers-in-law Joseph Denley, John Scott and Ross Baines and niece Marilyn Scott. Jim will be missed by his good friends Bev and Peter Cassel. Jim was a firefighter for the City of Sarnia for 34 years and also worked as a fire consultant at the Bruce Nuclear Plant for 2 years. Jim was a former member of the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club and the Sarnia Rotary Club. He was on the Canada Day Committee for many years serving as the Parade Marshall and setting off the Canada Day fireworks. Jim enjoyed hockey and supported Junior B hockey in Sarnia for many years. Jim also served on numerous committees related to the fire industry. Jim will always be remembered for his love of family, particularly spending time with his grandchildren prior to his illness. He was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Jim loved the outdoors and was an avid golfer. He enjoyed hunting and camping in his younger years.
