OBITUARY IRENE LETKO (nee PORGES) Died peacefully in her sleep at home on September 9, 2007 in her ninety-fourth year. She was the beloved wife of Desider Letko (deceased) and dear mother of Peter. She leaves behind her son Peter, daughter-in-law Deborah Josephson, grandchildren Andrea, Alexander and Stephen. She was born in Spiska Bella, Slovakia, the devoted daughter of Wilma and Arnold Porges and loving sister of brother Laci. She was a beautiful girl and gifted student. In a period when it was unusual for a girl to achieve a high level of education she studied and practiced law in her native country. The war years brought tragedy and pained her but she seldom shared the sorrow with others. She immigrated to Canada with her husband and son in 1948 in the wake of political upheaval. Here she worked long hours with her husband as immigrants do, making a living and establishing a new home. She was a quiet and private person devoted to her family and had a deep respect for others. Her soft touch, warm affection and love will be remembered and greatly missed. Private funeral arrangements have been made. MACDONALD, Ian Gordon. September 9, 2007, the Great Outdoorsman and Scouter for many years in Dorval, Ian MacDonald you never gave up without a smile and each day as his saying went "GOOD, GOOD." His courageous strength and the will to live was always with him and all of us. The battle with Cancer finally took over his life and the love of his life, who's heart is broken in a million pieces, will miss him each second, minute, day and year. Bye for now my loving husband from your love, and wife, Cheryl and children who will greatly miss you and love you so much, son Gordon (Melanie), grandchildren, Chelsea, Kyle and Shawn, son David (Erin) and Tyler and his daughter Andria, who's music inspired him daily, her trumpet playing will play in his heart forever. SMALL, ALICE MARIE (MCDOWELL) - Alice Marie (McDowell) Small died faithful to her God, Jehovah, Sunday, September 9, 2007 with her family by her side. Alice was born March 30, 1933 in Ross Island Lighthouse, Grand Manan, N.B. to Harry and Sadie (Tidd) McDowell. Alice was well known in the community. In 1975 she went to work part time at the school cafeteria and a few years later joined the School District full time as a custodian. There she worked until her retirement in 1994. During her time working at the school she developed many friendships with students and faculty. Throughout her retirement she spoke most admiringly of those friends therein. Alice loved the people of the community dearly as was evident in her fifty years in the door to door ministry in imitation of Christ Jesus. Matthew 24:14. Alice is survived by her eight children, Virginia (Daniel) Rogers, John (Joan), Roderick, Wade (Diane), Laurel, Walter (Chantal), Monte (Joanne), and Maria (Paul) Pickering; 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; sisters, Lillian Purton and Eugenie Sands; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Spencer in 2005; and five brothers; and a sister. Funeral arrangements by Ells Funeral Home. Visiting hours 2 to 4 PM Thursday. MALLERY, HARLEY (BUNNY) - Mr. Harley (Bunny) Mallery of Penobsquis, passed away on September 9, 2007 at the age of 70. Born in Poodiac, he was the son of the late Harland and "Molly" (Meehan) Mallory. He is survived by three brothers, Andrew Mallory and his wife, Cathy of Sussex, Bobby Mallery and Ellen Clarke of Sussex, Billy Mallory of Ontario; five sisters, Nettie Straight and her husband, Jim of Saint John, Josephine O'Neill of Sussex, Doreen Mallory of Moncton, Barb Pettigrew of Bahamas and Terry Mallory of Penobsquis. He was predeceased by three brothers, Otty, Lester, Larry; and by two sisters, Linda Hughes and Addie Daw. Carl "Yogi" Steeves Carl "Yogi" Steeves 32, of Lakeville, Westmorland County, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday September 9, 2007 as the result of a motorcycle accident in Shediac Cape. Born in Moncton, he was the son of Richard (Dick) Steeves of Lakeville and the late Sharon (O'Brien) Lutes. Yogi was a motorcycle enthusiast who had a real zest for life and he lived life to the fullest with his special friend "Bud" and his other friends. Besides his father, Yogi will be sadly missed by the love of his life, Janice Mullins; sister, Elaine Oakley (Tom), Lakeville; brother, Leonard (Tammy), Lakeville; step father, Rufus Lutes, Lakeville; half sisters, Debbie Black (Bob), Linda Armitage (Omer), Melissa Steeves; half brother, David Steeves; second mom, Kathy O'Brien (Mike), Lakeville; aunt, Ann Mazerolle (Gerry), Moncton; several cousins. Lévi Bastarache 1937 - 2007 Lévi Bastarache, age 70, husband of Irma (Née LeBlanc) Bastarache of Saint-Antoine, passed away on Monday September 10, 2007 at the Moncton City Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Born August 24th, 1937 in Moncton, he was the son of the late Dennis and the late Elise (Née Bastarache) Bastarache. He worked for Moncton Crush Stone and the Moncton Airport; he will be remembered for his volunteer work playing bingo with the elderly. Levi loved fishing, hunting and playing cards. He attended Saint-Antoine l'Ermite Roman Catholic Church, Saint-Antoine. Besides his wife Irma, he is survived by his children, Rose (Paul), Betty, Ann, Francis, Steven and Louise; four grand children, Jason, Rachelle, Niki, and Shawn; one great grand daughter, Jada; five brothers, Sam (Félexine), Willie (Pauline), Alec (Bernadette), Ronnie (Theresa) and Dennis all of Moncton; five sisters, Claudette, Lynn (Larry) both of Waltham, Mass., Annette of Oshawa, ON, Irene (Aldé), Marie; and a half sister, Lorette all of Moncton; and several nephews, nieces and cousins. Levi was predeceased by one infant brother, Eddie; and one grand son, Joey (2004). GIBSON: ROBERT JAMES The passing of Robert J. Gibson of Harvey, NB and formerly of Marysville occurred at the Harvey Hospital, on September 9th, 2007. He was 65. Born in Sudbury, Ontario he was a son of the late Clarence and Jean (Henry) Gibson. Robert was a member and trustee of the Harvey Baptist Church, as well as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Marysville Branch #15, and was retired from the City of Fredericton, Engineering Department. He was an avid woodcarver and enjoyed fishing. He is survived his wife Margaret (Gereau) Gibson; 2 sons Robert (Shirley Estey) of Marysville, and William of Charlottetown,PEI; Grandson Colby; brother William(Bill) Joan of Marysville; sister Linda Dykeman (Clarence) of Keswick Ridge; several nieces and nephews. Dorothy Betz (née Nepinak) June 26, 1929 - September 09, 2007 On Sunday, September 9, 2007, Dorothy Betz passed away peacefully at the Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg. Dorothy is survived by her beloved husband , Elmer, her daughters: Linda Keeper, Lorraine (Solly) Kakegamic, Irene (Terry) Plowman, June Funk and her son: Tom Betz. She is also survived by her eighteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Charles and Bernadette Nepinak, youngest daughter, Tara, her sister, Roseanne, and brother, Thomas Nepinak. Dorothy was born at the Pine Creek Reserve on June 26, 1929, lost her parents at an early age and was raised by her grandparents. She attended Pine Creek Residential School until the age of 18 and worked in various places before moving to Winnipeg in 1948. She met the love of her life, Elmer, whom she married on December 2, 1950. They made their home in Winnipeg and together raised their family of six children. Dorothy‘s greatest joy was to spend time with her family, whom she loved immensely and never missed a birthday or special occasion. She would spend endless hours knitting and making gifts for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her love and generosity extended beyond her immediate family and she was always there to lend a helping hand to her relatives, friends and even strangers. We will always remember her for her contagious laugh, sense of humour, and generous spirit of giving. Dorothy was moved by the hardship suffered by native people and her compassion and dedication led her to a lifelong career in aboriginal law and community service. Dorothy was one of the original founding members for the Indian and Métis Friendship Centre, pioneered the first Native Court Communicators Program with the Province of Manitoba, where she used her Ojibway language to help numerous aboriginal people to understand the law. She was appointed as the Canadian delegate to the Fifth United Nations Congress in Geneva, Switzerland and spoke on the topics of women, youth and aboriginal people. She was a board member and volunteer for many organizations, such as Indian and Métis Friendship Centre, Manitoba Society of Criminology, Manitoba Correctional Institutions, Native Clan Organization, Juvenile Review Board, Juvenile Corrections & Child Welfare Government Board, Main Street Project, Police & Natives Committee, Aboriginal Health & Wellness Centre, Aboriginal Centre, Human Rights Committee, Native Alcoholism Council, one of the founding members of the Kekinan Centre (Aboriginal Seniors Residence), RCMP Aboriginal Advisory Committee, Pathway Children’s Home, Marymound School, Manitoba Association of Rights & Liberties, Ma Mawi Chi Itata Centre, Native Women’s Transition Centre, Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development, and Keteyatsak Elders and Seniors. Dorothy was the recipient of many awards and was recognized by many of her colleagues and friends for her work as a community leader and a native community activist. Some awards include the Order of the Buffalo Hunt (Prov. of Manitoba), the National Aboriginal Achievement Award, Women of the Year Award, Joe Zuken Award for citizen activist to name a few. Even up to the time of her death Dorothy could be seen selling her knitting at the Aboriginal Centre to raise funds for the native youth programs. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the Concordia Hospital for the excellent care and compassion shown. They also wish to thank granddaughter, Christine, and grandson, Edward, for their special devotion and dedication to Granny and Grandpa. Father Dominique Kerbrat will officiate at the viewing/prayers at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 13 at the Glen Eden Funeral Chapel, 4477 Main Street, Winnipeg. Father Jose Cabral will officiate at the funeral service at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 14 at the same location. Interment to follow at the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. She is survived by the love of her life and husband of 52 years, Dr. Alfred D. Les loved living on Vancouver Island, since moving there from Calgary around 20 years ago. One of Les' greatest passions was the creation of the Over 55 Senior's Leisure Society". BERNARDO, Raymond Francis Died peacefully at Saanich Peninsula Hospital on Tuesday September 4, 2007 age 82. Ray was born on May 6, 1925 in London Ontario. He spent most of his life in the Toronto area before retiring to Victoria, then Sidney in 1988. Ray is survived by his loving wife Pauline (Paula), sister Shirley and brother Ken (Ontario), daughters Armida (Alberta) and Linda (Ontario), son Michael (Ontario) and stepdaughters Karyn and Denise (Ontario). Ray was predeceased by son Terry, daughter Donna and stepson Tom. He is fondly remembered by many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren across the country. Ray was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, in Ontario and BC since 1954. A memorial service was held at St. Elizabeth's RC Church in Sidney on Friday September 7, 2007. The family wishes to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. DESNOYER, Alice Kathleen (nee Volden) passed away September 8, 2007, at the age of 94 years, a resident of Rockglen, SK, formerly of Vernon, B.C. KLEIN, Marcella Katherine (nee Wiome) late of Francis, Sask., passed away peacefully with family by her side on Saturday, September 8, 2007 at the age of 92 years. Marcella is predeceased by her husband Fred, two sons, Edward and Mark. DAY, Bob August 27, 1946 - September 9, 2007 Bob Day of Calgary passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2007 at the age of 61 years. Bob was born on August 27, 1946 in Toronto and moved out West in the late 1960's where he pursued a successful music career. Bob played with various bands including the Rob McConnell Boss Brass, Paul Anka and Frank Sinatra Jr. just to name a few. He was a noted jazz artist who played at various venues throughout the city. Bob chose to live in Calgary to be close to his daughter Johanna. He loved visiting the mountains, where he enjoyed camping, hiking and skiing. Bob is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Johanna and Brent Buckingham. He will also be forever remembered by his many friends whom he considered part of his family. FRODSHAM, Lowell 1927 - 2007 Lowell Frodsham, beloved husband of Lovina, passed away September 8, 2007 at the age of 80. Lowell was born in Cardston, AB and raised on a ranch in Mountain View, AB. After high school, he attended the University of Alberta and then served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England. Upon his return, he attended and graduated from Brigham Young University. Lowell taught school in Diamond City, AB and then in Calgary before joining Keith Construction where he worked for thirty-one years. He loved building new communities and worked in the areas of research, design and marketing and served as Vice President and President. Lowell served in the executive of the Calgary Home Builders' Association and for fifteen years on the Board of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, serving as president in both organizations. Rotary has also played an important part in his life and he has enjoyed memberships in both the South Calgary Rotary Club as well as the Downtown Calgary Rotary Club. Lowell was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a bishop as well as a counselor in two Stake Presidencies. Lowell loved the outdoors and would take every opportunity to water ski or snow ski. He loved his wife and family dearly and they will miss him. Lowell leaves his devoted wife of fifty-six years, Lovina; their four children Valerie Harker (Orin) of Okotoks, Christine Dernick (Robert) of Houston, TX, James "Jim" Frodsham of Calgary and Joseph "Joe" Frodsham (Kris) of Dallas, TX; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister Sharon Haynes (Ted) of Magrath, AB and many other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 14540 Parkland Boulevard S.E. on Friday, September 14 at 2:00 p.m. with Bishop Rick Neilson officiating. KARPINSKI, Yvonne 1954 - 2007 Yvonne Karpinski passed away suddenly on Friday, September 7, 2007 at the age of 53 years. She will be forever missed by her husband Charles and her son Paul. Yvonne was a well-known hair stylist in Calgary for many years, most recently working at a major group of Calgary based hair salons. She had been looking forward to a return visit to the UK, and considered London to be home, even though she was born in Poland. Yvonne will always be remembered by everybody for her vivacious character and her caring nature - her final gift being through the auspices of the HOPE Program, where she was able to improve the quality of the lives of two people and their families through organ donation. MITCHELL, Dr. John Patrick (Pat) 1918 - 2007 Born in Calgary, Alberta, December 22, 1918, passed away peacefully at home in Victoria, BC, September 6, 2007. Predeceased by his sister Eileen Higgin, Gwen McKenzie and Iris Mitchell. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, son Jon, brother David (Doris), several nieces and nephews and special friends Brenda Beadmell, John Smeathers and Mary and Gary Harkness. Pat served overseas as a flying officer for six years with the R.C.A.F. during World War II. Upon his return to Canada he attended UBC obtaining his BSc. Further obtaining his OD from the Northern Illinois College of Optometry, he practiced his profession in Calgary until his retirement in 1984. Pat was the epitome of a loving and devoted husband, father and a raconteur extraordinaire with a keen sense of humor. TORRES, Enrique Sanchez It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Enrique Torres at the Carewest George Boyack Nursing Home on Monday, September 10, 2007 at the age of 85 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Kata (K.) of forty-four wonderful years. Enrique will be greatly missed by his children Helen Gonzales, Tony (Lucy) Torres, Ricky (Linda) Torres, Jimmy (Ana) Torres. Francis Murray Keiver 1924-2007 Francis (Frank) Murray Keiver formerly of Stoney Creek, recently of Lakeview Manor, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on September 9, 2007. Born in Moncton, he was the only son of Weldon Murray Keiver and Mary Louise (Leblanc) Keiver. Frank was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Marie Elizabeth (Murphy) Keiver in 2003; and a son, Donald in 1954. He was the loving father of Anne Marie Keiver and Michael Frederick Keiver. Frank is also survived by nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was educated at St. Bernard's School where he met his future wife in grade one. Following graduation from Moncton High School, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1942. He underwent his RCAF training at Pennfield Ridge, New Brunswick. Subsequently, he volunteered for overseas duties with the Royal Air Force (RAF). He was assigned to Coastal Command and served with RAF Squadron 209 in Egypt, East and South Africa. He flew missions over the Indian Ocean in Catalina and Sunderland seaplanes. He was awarded the Burma and Africa Stars for his military service. Following his war service, he returned to Moncton where he began a lifelong career in advertising commencing with the Moncton Times and Transcript. Subsequently, he worked for B.E. Smith Furniture Company, J.D. Creaghan Co., and Co-op Atlantic. He culminated his career as an advertising manager with the Atlantic Lottery Corporation where he was involved in print, radio and television advertising production. Frank was a charter member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. He was also past president of the Maritime Provinces Jaycees. He was a member of veterans' organizations including the Moncton Chapter of the United Military Services Institute, Riverview Veterans' Association, and the Canadian Legion. He was also a keen student of history and was a member of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society, as well as the past president of the Albert County Historical Society. Visiting hours will be held at Cadman Bowness Funeral Home (857-1110), 114 Alma Street, Moncton on Wednesday, September 12th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. With Parish Prayers at 8:30 pm in the funeral home. The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Botsford Street at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 13, 2007. MACHUM, Gordon O. - In loving memory of Gordon O. Machum, 85 years, who passed away Monday, September 10th, 2007, at Finlandia Koti. Lt. G.O. Machum served in the Canadian Military Intelligence Corps until the end of the European Conflict. He was transferred to Camp Ritchie, Maryland U.S.A. for Intelligence training for the war in the Pacific. He met and married Lt. Marian J. Everett at the U.S.A. Army Nursing Corps. The returned to Toronto where he attended the University of Toronto graduating as a Metalurgical Engineer. He began his engineering career with International Nickel in Copper Cliff in 1949 and retired as Senior Vice-President of the Smelting and Refining Operations in 1980. During his life in Sudbury, he continued his military involvement joining R.C.E.M.E. where he was promoted to Major and became the Commanding Officer of the 33rd Technical Sqaudron., Canadian Army, Sudbury. He contributed to the well being of Sudbury by serving on the Board of Directors of the SGH including 2 terms as a Chairman. He also served on the boards for Guaranteed Trust and Hunting University where he was also Chairman. He was instrumental in the creation of the University of Air (courses on television). Upon retirement, he was recruited by Cliff Fielding as a consultant of Fisher Harbour and was the 1st Harbour Master. Beloved husband of Marian (Everett) Machum predeceased 2006. Loving father Harry (wife Dorothy) of Little Current, Kendal Farwell (husband Dennis) of Owen Sound, Michael (wife Jennifer) of Manitoulin Island, Kenneth (wife Shelley) and Jean Blanchard (husband Mike) both of Sudbury and Howard (wife Anne-Marie) of Lively. BORISS, Nikolajs (Nick) - On Friday, September 7, 2007 with his work not quite finished, Nikolajs Boriss, 94, brought a basket of tomatoes into the kitchen, tucked his lawnmower into the garage, and took leave of his life. Nick is beloved by many for much. As a refugee from his beloved Soviet-occupied Latvia, Nick and his wife, Emma, chose Canada in which to raise their young sons. A champion of all that is Canadian, he admonished his children's laments about taxes - a heavy fist on the table and a soft voice: “Such cheap rent for such a good country!” He and Emma (d. 1998) encouraged their children and in- law children to seek learning, to love family and to own a piece of Canada. A fine example of the phrase “Grow where you're planted” Nick planted and grew just about everything. He created flower beds and forests on empty lawns. When his wife died, he learned how to cook, bringing an attitude of enthusiasm to each dish. Fresh potatoes, warm from the earth, ripe tomatoes from his own vines, salads from his own garden - life's riches were simply grand for this man who was forced to turn his back on his country and begin again. He embraced his heart- granddaughter Bryn (Adam). Nick was adored by new-found nephews Alex (Lucy d. 2006) and Bruno (Maija) Boriss, children of his brother lost during the war. Two little great-grand-daughters, Isabel and Olivia, brought out Nick's humour and ability to relate, with a laugh, a twinkle, a shared birthday cake. Entered this earth April 1, 1913 Rezekne, Latvia. Took flight at Royal Victoria Hospital September 7. “You're so right, Dad. Such cheap rent for such good country!” Vislab, Papa! BALYK, William (Bill) November 22, 1930 - September 9, 2007 Bill Balyk, beloved husband of fifty-three years of Bernice of Calgary, passed away on September 9, 2007 at the age of 76 years. Bill owned and operated Balik Plumbing and Heating. He retired early, due to Multiple Sclerosis. Bill was a Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Council No. 1186, and served as Grand Knight for two terms and also served as District Deputy. Bill enjoyed the outdoors; he found pleasure in camping, fishing and hunting with his family. He also enjoyed bowling and other activities with his M.S. pals. Besides his loving wife Bernice, Bill is survived by two sons, Terry (Brenda), Trevor (Melanie); three daughters, Susan Arnold, Barbara (Tim) Batty, Carmen (Stefan) Queitsch; fourteen grandchildren, Jeff (Mel), Mathew, Amber (Shawn), Lana, Megan, Stephanie, Andrew, Thomas, Matthew, Nick, Joel, Kaitlyn, Kaslo, Kiana; two great-grandchildren Taylor and Brooklyn; sister Stella (Norman) Drews; two daughters-in-law Donna Balyk and Susan Balyk; also nieces and nephews. Bill is predeceased by his son Patrick, infant son David, sister Mary, and his parents Nicholas and Barbara.
