CURVEON, Fredrick Henry Mr. Fredrick Henry Curveon passed away on September 6, 2007 at his home with his family at his side, at the age of 64 years. Funeral Services for Fred will be held at St. Andrew's United Church, Saturday, September 15 at 1:00 p.m. Following the Service, Fred will be interred in the Golden Community Cemetery to rest next to his parents. Fred was born in Golden, BC, on September 17, 1942, and had been a lifetime resident of the Golden area. He had worked for Greyhound Canada for thirty-nine years. Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing and especially working with his hands fixing things. Fred is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years, Lynda; children, Shane (Susie) of Kelowna, Brenda (Mike) Plonka of Golden and Robert (Crystal) of Calgary; grandchildren, Airn and Hayley Plonka and Alyssa and Sara Curveon; sister, Donna Johnson of Port Alberni; and numerous nieces and nephews. Donations in memory of Fred may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, PO Box 1524, Golden, BC, V0A 1H0, specifically designated for research in Pancreatic Cancer. DUCKWORTH, Thomas Jackson January 17, 1925 - September 8, 2007 Thomas J. Duckworth, Q.C. passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2007 at the age of 82 years. Tom is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Marguerite and two children, Regan and Marcus (Elizabeth) and predeceased by his eldest son, Tom Jr. Tom was born in Weyburn, receiving his early education in Saskatchewan and post-secondary education at University of British Columbia where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and, in 1951, a Bachelor of Laws degree. Tom served with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. After marrying his wife Marguerite in 1952, they settled in Calgary where Tom was one of the founders of the firm that carries his name, Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP. Tom had a long and rewarding career at BD&P as a dynamic litigator and truly enjoyed the practice and challenges of law. Tom enjoyed life, the outdoors and many years of world traveling. His deep knowledge and understanding of history and art and his quick wit will be deeply missed. SHANNON, Roy Elliot October 5, 1935 - September 8, 2007 Roy Elliot Shannon, beloved husband of Gloria of Calgary, passed away suddenly at his home, September 8, 2007 at the age of 71 years. Roy was a chartered accountant and the CFO of Aqua-Pure Ventures of Calgary. He was a loving father, an avid fisherman, an outdoorsman, an entrepreneur, a loving and humourous man, and a generous man who spent many hours giving back to those who had helped him throughout his life. BROWNLIE, John Maxwell (Max) Peacefully on September 8, 2007, at 82 years of age. Beloved husband of Meta (nee Hall). Cherished father of Heather, and Ian and wife Mary Brownlie. Loving granddad to Dale Maxwell, Leah Mary Etta, and Cole Ian. Dear brother of the late Jim (1991) and his wife Theresa (1981) survived by his second wife Rose Brownlie. Dear cousin of Mary Hannon (nee Hall) and Sommerville Chalmers of Scotland. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Max retired after 33 years of educating at the University of Windsor as a Professor in the Faculty of Business Admin-istration. Recently, he was honoured with the title of Professor Emeritus. He spent his early career in Montreal. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Western Ontario (Assumption Coll-ege). In addition he attended Michigan State and McGill University in Montreal. He was a veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force and member of Essex Golf & Country Club. Special thanks to Debbie Hamelin, for her ongoing assistance to Max and the entire family. In addition, the family would like to acknowledge the care and attentiveness of the Hotel Dieu Intensive Care Unit and the Renal Dialysis Team. KENNEY (Riddell), Dorothy Margaret - Mom passed away on Thursday, September 6th, 2007 in the care of some of her favorite friends and nurses at the Grove Park Home in Barrie. She would have been 98 on November 19th. People meeting Mom immediately felt her inner beauty and radiance. No one ever forgot her. Everyone loved her. Mom was pre-deceased by her husband Fred and brothers Harold and Clare. She will be sadly missed by nephews Brian and Barry, nieces Wendy and Lynne. Mom's sister Mabel Mitchell lives in Toronto. SUDDS, Donald Roderick - Passed away peacefully on Friday, September 7, 2007 at the Welland General Hospital after an extended illness in his 86th year. Dear husband for 62 years of Laura, and father of son Keith. Don was a Veteran of WWII and was a proud member of the Royal Highland Regiment of Canada The Black Watch, serving from 1939 to 1945. He was awarded the British Empire Medal for bravery in action. After the war Don resided in England for 33 years and returned to his native Canada in 1975 where he was born in 1921 at Kapaskasing. His family moved to Montreal, Quebec where he spent most of the years of his youth until the outbreak of war. He was the eldest of nine brothers and sisters. Cremation has taken place, a memorial service will be held at St. Thomas' Anglican Church (Ontario St.) in St. Catharines on Friday, September 14, 2007 at 2:00 p.m.. CHAPMAN (WHELAN), JANICE MARIAN - The death of Janice Marian (Whelan) Chapman of West Saint John occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on September 10, 2007. Born in Saint John on July 8, 1954 she was the daughter of Frederick and Anita (McCabe) Whelan. Janice was a devoted mother to her daughter, Kathleen (daughter of Dale Chapman and niece of Lori Chapman). In addition to her daughter and parents, Janice is survived by brothers, John (Margaret) Whelan and their children, Alex, Jennifer (goddaughter) and Jonathan, and Thomas (Heather) Whelan and their son, Padraic, all of Saint John; and her sisters, Beth Whelan of Saint John and Anne Marie (Gregory) Drodge and their children, Mitchell and Stacey of Halifax; as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Janice was a member of the Our Lady of the Assumption Church. She graduated from St. Vincent's High School and attended Dalhousie University where she earned her degree in Pharmacy. She was employed by Shoppers Drug Mart (formerly Wasson's Pharmacy) on Crown Street in Saint John. Janice will be remembered for her generous spirit, love of family and friends, her commitment to her profession and her smile. She enjoyed summer vacations at her trailer, as well as gardening and crafts, and the pride and joy of her life - Kathleen. Special thanks to Dr. Kolyvas, Janice Kenney, and all the medical staff in Emergency, Radiotherapy, NICU, 4B South, and the Palliative Care Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital for their specialized care and compassion given to Janice and her family. SZYPOWSKI, Julia (nee SIOMKAJLO) September 10, 1922 - September 7, 2007 Veteran of WWII Women's Auxiliary Air Force of the RAF, Polish Division. Passed away at home in the arms of her loved ones on Friday, September 7, 2007. Beloved wife of 60 years of Michal. Devoted and loving mother of Tadzio Ted and Krysia Krystyna. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Patrick (Natalie) and Ryan (Jillian); her great- granddaughters Kaileigh and Leanna. Survived by her sister Stanislawa SM Alice of the Congregation of the Holy Family of Nazareth, Paris, France. She will always be fondly remembered by her family (here and in Europe), friends, and all who knew her. Everyone will miss her delicious pierogi and her beautiful crochet work. No wife or mother was ever more loving or loved. Special thanks go to Nurse Lin James and the wonderful PSW team at ParaMed who contributed to her care and comfort during her illness. Julia had a full life, filled with moments of great joy as well as moments of great sorrow and hardship. When Russia invaded Poland at the onset of WWII, the Russians deported her to Siberia along with her elderly parents and siblings, and approx. 2 million Poles. For weeks they were locked into an unheated cattle car in the dead of winter as the train brought them deeper into the depths of the USSR. She and her siblings were slave labourers in a gold mine for over 2 years, and five members of her family remain in unmarked graves in Siberia. When they were finally released, she and 3 remaining sisters had another harrowing journey ahead of them, with few provisions, until they finally reached freedom in Persia (Iran). After regaining some of their strength they made a further journey to Kidugala, a refugee camp in Tanzania, East Africa. A year later, she made another incredible journey from East Africa to England, at a time when ships were regularly being torpedoed and sunk. In England she joined the WAAF and worked in aircraft maintenance until the end of the war. By this time, Poland was swallowed up in the Communist axis, so she no longer had a country to return to. After meeting and marrying Michal, the two set off on another incredible journey to a new life in Canada. They spent the first 22 years in Montreal, and then settled in Kingston, where they have lived for 36 years. Family and friends will be received at the TOWNSHIP CHAPEL of the GORDON F. MARIA, Maria (nee D'Amico) Died peacefully in her sleep, at home on Sunday September 9, 2007. Cherished wife of Guiseppe (Joe) Maria, with whom she celebrated over 58 years of marriage. Predeceased by her parents, Giuseppe (1986) and Paulina (1978) D'Amico. Devoted and adored mother, mother in law and best friend to Sara and Jack Agosta, and Anthony and Dale Maria. The best Nonna in the world to Maria Vasapolli (Antonio), Dina Masiarek (Thomas), Sebastiano Agosta, Anthony Maria (Rachelle Norris), Toronto, Julienne Maria (Andrew Rousseau), Joseph Maria (Shelby Fazekas) and Victoria Maria. Delighted Bis-Nonna to Alexander Meloche, Salvo and Luca Vasapolli, Massimo and Christian Masiarek. She leaves behind many family members in Italy. Maria arrived in Canada in December 1954 with her beloved husband Joe, two small children and a suitcase. They settled in Windsor Ontario, where they opened Aurora Pastry in a small storefront on Erie St. They expanded and relocated to its present location at Erie and Elsmere. Maria and Joe became well known throughout Essex County for their fine italian pastries and wedding cake masterpieces, successfully operating the business until retirement in 1988. She was a faithful member of St. Angela Merici Church and a long time member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Giovanni Caboto Club. Maria enjoyed all that life offered her, but was absolutely delighted to be in the presence of her family. Visiting at the WINDSOR CHAPEL FUNERAL HOME, 1700 Tecumseh Rd. CARNIE, Robert (Bob) Hay March 28, 1928 - September 8, 2007 Professor Emeritus Bob Carnie passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, September 8, 2007 after a long battle with illness. He leaves behind his loving and beloved wife of fifty years, Jean; three children: Morag, Fiona and Andrew; and sisters: Isabel, Ruby, and May in Scotland. Bob was born in Dundee, Scotland, where he attended the Morgan Academy. He received an MA in English and Philosophy and a PhD in English literature from the University of St. Andrews. He taught and researched 18th century Scottish literature, bibliographic studies, book cover design, the Scottish book trade, and the works of Samuel Johnson, James Hogg, and Robert Burns. Loved by his students, he taught at Bedford College London, Queens College at the University of St. Andrews, the University of Ife in Nigeria, the University of Dundee, and for twenty years at the University of Calgary. At the University of Calgary, Bob served in the president's office as Secretary of the General Faculties Council. He was the editor of the journal Abstracts in English Studies. He was also the author of numerous articles and pamphlets and wrote the beautiful Burns Illustrated, published by the Calgary Burns Club. Bob was an avid golfer, fisherman and sports fan. He loved to listen to the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. But his greatest passion, apart from his bonnie Jean, was collecting signed decorative book bindings. His extensive collection was donated to the University of Calgary in 2006. Bob was the bard, distinguished life member and past president of the Calgary Burns Club and a life member and frequent speaker at the Schiehallion Scottish Society. Bob was a man who believed that compassion, justice and truth come from within us all, that learning and knowledge are the greatest achievements of civilization and that things of beauty are worth our time and attention even if they have no monetary value. His gentle loving nature, wisdom and wit will be greatly missed by his family. The Carnie family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Vincy Yam and Dr. Han Friesen. GROSENICK, M. Dale M. Dale Grosenick passed away after a brief struggle with cancer at the High River Hospital on Friday, September 7, 2007 at the age of 69 years. Dale will be lovingly remembered by his wife of forty-five years, Elly; daughters, Suzanne, Allison, Georgina and Laura (Gerrard); and grandchildren, Colin and Sean McCaffrey. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Zelda. Dale was born in Radville, SK in 1938 and was raised in Lake Alma, SK. He met and married Elly in Saskatoon in 1961. Dale worked for IBM for thirty-one years. After retiring as a Senior Executive from IBM Toronto, he moved to Calgary in 1988 and spent a number of years in real estate. Dale and Elly had many wonderful experiences on the numerous bus trips they took together. The last few years were spent in High River where he enjoyed golfing, bowling and being "Mr. Fixer Upper" for his "five girls'" homes and vehicles. THOMSON, JOHN BURNS 1914-2007 John Burns Thomson passed away peacefully at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on September 9, surrounded by his wife and family, two weeks after celebrating his 93rd birthday. John was born in Dunfermline Scotland, and at the age of 16 traveled by boat to Canada with a group of friends to the River Valley area. Upon arrival he labored on several farms, and worked as a meat-cutter and truck driver. He eventually settled in Fredericton, where he met Thelma Hay. John and Thelma married in 1942, shortly before he went overseas to serve with the Canadian Forces in the Second World War. Upon his return John became a Constable with the Fredericton Police Force, where he served until retirement in 1979. John and Thelma enjoyed a loving fifty-two year marriage until she passed away in 1994. John was a very well-loved member of the community and lived his life to the fullest, always out "running the roads". He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the camp he built at Oromocto Lake, golfing, playing in dart tournaments, was a member of the Marysville Legion, and enjoyed spending time at his favorite hang-out Gordie's Pub. Recognizing John's love of golf, Gordie's Pub has established an annual Golf Tournament named in his honour. During the last five years John spent much of his time with Hildred Flewelling. They traveled many times to Arizona and New Mexico to visit her family. John loved travelling and having new experiences, and would return with many amusing stories of the places he visited. John and Hildred married in January 2007. John will always be lovingly remembered by his wife Hildred (Flewelling); his four children and their spouses, John Thomson Jr (Julie), Lynn Dunster (Paul), Gary Thomson (Susan) of Fredericton, Karen Thorburn (Tom) of McAdam, chosen daughter Janet DeMello (Mike) of Fredericton; his 11 grandchildren Melissa, Natalie, Cole, Ryan, Lisa-Dawn, Paige, Christina, Michelle, Liane, Erin, Michael, and their families; his 9 great-grandchildren; and his stepchildren David (Gale), Sherry (Mike), Debbie (Eric), Murray (Danielle) and their families. John was the last surviving member of his immediate family, and is survived by his niece May Baird, nephew John Dunning, and numerous cousins. Funeral Service will be held at Bishop's Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Rd. Fredericton, on Wednesday September 12th at 2pm. Interment at a later date.
