Elle était la mère de Claude, Ronald, Patrick, Bernard, Brigitte; la grand-mère de Steeve, Roxanne, Sébastien, Yann, Alexandre et Ludovic; ses arrière-petits-enfants: Maude, William et Dylan. Son of the late Joseph and of the late Virginia (née Arruda) De Costa. Beloved husband of Alexina De Costa (née Lachapelle) of Sudbury. Loving father of Robert “Bob” De Costa (Patsy) and Virginia Mason (David) both of North Bay, Hilda Aitken and Gary De Costa (Shirley) both of Bermuda, Dolores Lindo (Duane) and Suzanna Kunto both of Sudbury and Keith De Costa (Karen) of Louisville, Kentucky. Predeceased by his son William De Costa Jr. and by his daughter Diana De Costa. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his 20 grandchildren and by his 16 great-grandchildren. Mr. De Costa, a hard worker, was a former heavy equipment operator. William, who enjoyed Bermuda and the ocean, was very dedicated to his loving family and was a good husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed many sports, mostly golf, snooker, billiards and he was also an avid cricket player. The family will receive friends at the CO-OPERATIVE FUNERAL HOME, 222 Lasalle Blvd. E. BOYD, Maura Elizabeth (nee Jackson) June 3, 1939 - August 21, 2007 Maura Elizabeth Boyd (nee Jackson) of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at the age of 68 years. Born in Winnipeg, MB, Maura lived in Montreal, QC and Hamilton, ON, prior to moving to Calgary in 1968. She attended the Ontario Teachers' College and the University of Calgary (B Ed, M Ed). Her love of teaching led her to focus on children with special educational needs. Later, she became a consultant in Special Education for the Calgary School Board. After retirement, she enjoyed helping others in preparing to become Teaching Assistants through the courses she gave at Columbia College. Excellence in her work was her gold standard, gaining the respect of her colleagues and earning the love of so many of her students whose lives she influenced. She truly "made a difference" to everyone she touched. Her nature was such that there evolved a rich and deep circle of friends in every area of her life. She treasured them all and was fiercely loyal to each one. She enjoyed travelling, but was happiest entertaining her friends in her home - ever the elegant and gracious hostess. Maura is survived by her mother, Eloise Jackson of Nanaimo, B.C.; and her sister, Marcia Boyd of Vancouver, B.C. There was never a better daughter, sister or friend than Maura. We have been blessed to have had her as a part of our lives and will always remember her for her kindness, warmth, generosity, sense of humour, caring personality, love of life and spirit. ENMAN, Ronald Stancliffe With great sadness we have to say goodbye to our friend, father and grandfather Ron. Dad had passed away peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital on August 19, 2007. Thanks to the staff for all their help. Dad was born on May 31, 1948 in Lethbridge, AB. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Janis Ann (nee Black) in April, 2007. Born in Toronto, ON, Victor was the youngest of six children born to Katherine and Alfred Pope. His father passed away in August of 1920 from injuries sustained during World War I, leaving his mother to support her children on a war widow's pension. Victor graduated from high school after which he joined the Toronto Police as a cadet. His service with the police force was interrupted by World War II, where he served overseas from 1943 to 1945 as a tank commander and infantry officer. As a First Lieutenant, he was wounded in action after crossing the Rhine River. Victor returned to Canada following the end of the War and resumed his career with the Toronto Police. He rose to the rank of Sergeant of Detectives before retiring after forty years of service in 1979. Victor was an accomplished artist and busied himself after retirement with his oil paintings and his garden. He was also blessed with an incredible singing voice and enjoyed sharing this gift with his church congregation as a soloist in the choir. Victor and Margaret moved from Ontario to Cochrane, AB in 2002 to be closer to family. Besides his wife of sixty-five years, Margaret, Victor is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Ann, and Murray and Michelle; four grandchildren, Karen, Bruce, Brent and Natalie; three great-grandchildren, Blake, Emma, and Lane; and his beloved border collie, McGregor. He was predeceased by all of his siblings. SMITH, Virgil Alvie September 25, 1925 - August 19, 2007 With sincere sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father and grandfather at the age of 81. Virg was born to Harry and Grace Smith in Vulcan, AB, and was predeceased by his sister, Verna, brothers, Jack and Merle and his wife, Margaret (nee Pickard) who died in 1994. He farmed in Vulcan until November 1944 when he enlisted in the Canadian Army (CFB Calgary). Returning from the war, he farmed in Poplar Point, MB (1952 to 1969) and later moved to Stony Mountain, MB, where he was Farm Manager at the Stony Mountain Penitentiary until retirement. He represented the Federal Penitentiary at national and international pistol and rifle competitions and was known to his counterparts as both an accomplished marksman and gunsmith. He excelled at, and had a passion for, hunting, fishing and farming and was active in such organizations as Ducks Unlimited, the Canadian Legion, and Canadian Rifle Association. Virg was a devoted and dedicated father to daughters, Janice Stoesz (Smith) and Gloria Jaggi (Smith), son-in-law Albert Jaggi; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Ian Stoesz, Amanda Sinclair and husband Darin Summerhays. Family and friends respected him in all aspects of his life as community leader, family man, hunter, fisherman, carpenter, mechanic and friend. He enjoyed curling, hockey, country music, poetry and a good western movie. His last years were spent at Bow View Manor in Calgary, AB where he enjoyed friendships and the devoted care by the staff and volunteers. The family extends sincere gratitude to the genuine care and attention by the caregivers at the Bow View Manor. WATSON, Margaret (nee Williams Reardon) November 1, 1935 - August 21, 2007 Margaret passed away peacefully at Agape Hospice after a very long but well fought battle with breast cancer. Marg was born in Calgary and attended school in several "oil patch" towns before graduating from Business College in Calgary. Marg is survived by her loving husband, Bud, of over twenty-six years. Marg is survived by a large blended family: son Craig Reardon (Ann), their children Meghan, Peter, Liam, Shea, and Maeve of Calgary; son Kent Reardon (Lynn), their daughters Carlee and Hali of Calgary; daughter Lee-Anne Smith (Greg), her children Denise and Blake of Calgary. Also survived by her stepchildren, Wendy Watson (Wayne) of Halifax and her sons Joel and Aaron of Calgary, Brad Watson (Donna), their sons Zach and Cole of Canmore; Janey Olivares (Gabriel) and sons Gabriel, David and Mauricio of Mexico City; Kevin Watson (Sandy), his children Cody, Claire, Kaitlyn and Tanner and Sandy's children Brie, Larry and Stephen of Calgary; Michael Watson (Theresa), their children Jessie and Matthew of Carstairs; her aunt Catherine Williams, cousin Blaine Williams (Carol), their children Jenna and Colby of Dalroy; her sister Faye Kinsman (Andy) of Kelowna; her brother Jack Williams (Norma) of Medicine Hat; numerous nieces and nephews and many, many cherished friends. Marg volunteered on the Oncology Ward at the Foothills Hospital for several years before she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Marg and Bud were very fortunate to have over twenty-six years together enjoying family, friends, world traveling, Sidney, B.C. and Calgary. Marg enjoyed sailing (West Coast, Caribbean, Halifax, Croatia and Turkey), whitewater rafting, canoeing, hiking, golfing, bowling and bridge with her friends. Marg was a great ten pin bowler competing internationally and was a member of the "600 Club". GILLESPIE, Betty Patricia (nee Young) After almost eighty wonderful years, Betty passed away peacefully at home on August 20, 2007, surrounded by the loving support of her husband Andrew and children: Ian (Jaqueline), Dawn Loucks (Barry), Gail Pettinger (Bill), and Bruce (Patricia). Betty, a woman of great beauty, empathy, spirit and quiet strength, was born in Montreal, P.Q. in 1927; daughter of H. Maitland and M. Patricia Young (nee Thomson). Predeceased by her brothers Ian and Brock, survived by sister Margot Taylor (Gary) and brother Ross (Alicia), Betty will also be greatly missed and cherished by all of her family, including twelve grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and by friends throughout the world. Mum was a beautiful woman in many ways: a devoted wife, an incredible mother, always a good listener and considerate of others' needs. She encouraged her children always to look for the good in people and in life's situations. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren would be unanimous on the recent quote of one, GG, you're the best brownie maker ever!" Having travelled the globe extensively with Andrew, she was always most at home in her coastal B.C. environs, where she spent many pleasurable hours with family and friends. No service by request. A gathering for close family to celebrate Betty's life will be held in Victoria near the date that would otherwise have seen Betty celebrating her sixtieth wedding anniversary with her beloved husband. ENGEL, Arthur Art Engel went home to be with his Lord and Savior, August 20, 2007 after a short battle with Brain Cancer. He leaves to mourn, Sylvia, his wife of fifty years; daughter Nancy Engel (Randy), son Daniel Engel (Betty-Lynne); five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren all of Calgary; a sister Hilda Roper (George), brother David Engel (Vicky); along with numerous nieces and nephews. Art was predeceased by his parents John and Pauline Engel and brother Fred Engel. Art was born and raised on the family farm in Endiang, Alberta. He was a police officer with the Jasper Place Edmonton detachment for a number of years before moving his family to Calgary in 1961 to go into business with his father-in-law Charlie Schneider. Together they had the mail contract for the City of Calgary until 1972 when the Government took over private mail service. At that time they were operating eighty-five trucks with two-hundred twenty-five uniformed couriers. Besides the mail contract, Art started, operated and was involved in numerous businesses including Solar Auto Body, Stampede Tire, Canadian Treads, McGuire Indexers, Charles Schneider Distributors, Canadian Looseleaf, Ta'ina Manufacturing and Hunt Morris and Associates. Art retired twice but needed to be around people, so for the past ten years he had been working for Foster's Garden Chapel where his compassion and understanding touched the lives of many. Besides being an incredible father and grandfather, Art was totally devoted to his God and his church serving on numerous committees as well as being Sunday School Superintendent, Chairing a number of boards, as a director with the Alpha Deus Foundation and the Maranatha Housing Society, choir member and leader of several life groups. An outdoor enthusiast, Art enjoyed hunting and fishing. A cowboy at heart, he enjoyed riding horses, rodeos and branding in the spring. He and Sylvia enjoyed travel and had many trips to Europe, Hawaii and various places throughout North America. A Funeral Service will be held at Centre Street Church, 3900 - 2 Street N.E., Calgary, T2E 9C1, on Monday, August 27, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Dr. Henry Schorr officiating. SMITH (LODGE), LOIS MAUREEN - Her death occurred at Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, NS on August 21st, 2007 following surgery. Born in December 1926 in Saint John, NB, she was the youngest daughter of the late Frank and Flossie (Bannister) Lodge. She was an active community member in Saint John, Sydney, Charlottetown, Halifax and Mahone Bay. She was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg and was a resident at Harbour View Haven, Lunenburg, these past two years. "Loie" ably combined the intricacies of raising a family, running a household, being a "Brown Owl" and hosting innumerable social functions, with her passion for gardening, home improvement and curling. She played lead for Verda Kempton's Canadian Senior Women's National Championship rink in 1982. In the later stages of the Second World War, she served as a stenographer in the operations room of Captor, an adjunct of HMCS Brunswicker, as well as a blackout curtain enforcer. In the 1950's Lois was employed as secretary to the manager of Canadian General Electric in Saint John, NB and in the late 1980's as dental office receptionist for Dr. Robert Ernst in Mahone Bay, NS. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her brothers, Edward and Ronald Lodge; sisters, Phyllis Lodge, Vida Merchant, Audrey Strole and Doris Dunham; half sisters, Rita McCavour and Irene Searle; half brothers, Roland and Fred Lodge. Lois is survived by her husband of 57 years, R. Gordon Smith, Bridgewater; children, Tony (Nancy Dauphinee), Sara (Stephen) Harding, and Becky (Bruce) Campbell; grandchildren, Jennifer, Christine and Geoffrey Smith, Alex and Ryan Harding, Sherri Campbell; and step-grandchildren, Megan, Brian and Laura Atkinson; sisters-in-law, Freda Taylor and Joyce Smith, NB; nieces, Cecilia Bowden, Dorothy Stears and Janet McKinney NB; nephews, Peter Dunham, Mahone Bay, David and Keith Peacock, NB; Stephen Smith, NB and Roger Smith, ON and Geoffrey Smith, BC; numerous grand nieces and nephews. Her remains have been cremated and are entrusted to the care of Mahone Funeral Home, 32 Parish Street, Mahone Bay where visitation and reception will be held 2 to 4pm, Saturday, August 25th. PALMER, SR., William James “Bill“ - In loving memory of William James “Bill“ Palmer, Sr., 87 years of Hartley Bay, who passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 15th, 2007, at his residence. He was born in St. Thomas and married Cecilia (Connelly) in St. Thomas in 1939. He was active in the Knights of Columbus and served as Grand Knight for two terms. He volunteered in the Canadian Navy and served from 1942 until 1945. His interest in building and renovating kept him busy until 1950 when he relocated to the French River where he started a tourist business. He had been active in the tourist industry for over fifty years and did some counseling for The Federal Business Development Bank for some of the other tourist operators. He did much for the founding of the French River Delta Association and was a charter member. He will be remembered by the hundreds of guests he entertained and sadly missed by a community which he did much to create. Beloved husband of Cecilia M. (Connelly) Palmer predeceased 1991. Loving father of William J. Palmer Jr. of Burlington, Michael D. Palmer (Colleen) of Hartley Bay, Darlene C. Palmer of Thunder Bay, Stephanie M. Palmer of Sudbury and Elizabeth predeceased. Cherished grandfather of Chuck, Brian, Chris, Shannon, James, Bill, Melissa, Mathew, Kimberly and Meagan and 18 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
