GIFFORD, John Marston 1916 - 2007 Died peacefully, courageously and with grace in his 91st year after a long series of illnesses at Kingston General Hospital on Thursday, May 31, 2007. Known as "Giff", "Poppy Giff" and "Grampa Giff", he was also husband to his pre-deceased wife, Barbara or "Cuddie" (nee Macnee) for over 47 years. He was a soldier, business executive, senior public servant and consultant. As a father his values, role model, people skills and humour will be carried forward by his sons, Tony (Nancy Mooers) with their daughters, Lee Simms (Mike), Sally and Kathleen, Andy (Leslie Denman), and Walter (Josephine Cumming) with their sons, Peter and Matthew, and daughter, Kate. As a Great-Grandfather he is survived by his two cherished great grandchildren, Charlie and Elspeth Simms. His family will remember and cherish his wonderful joke telling and laughter, his love of reading, music (especially jazz) and learning, his charity and community work, his attentively listening when we needed advice or a nudge to do the right thing. HOWARTH, Viola Muriel (nee Cornwall) Born December 24, 1917 Died May 29, 2007, Ottawa, Ontario. Her beloved husband, Bill, having died on May 9, 2007, Viola left to join him and celebrate their 65th anniversary together. She will be greatly missed by her children and their spouses, Lynda (Jim Rainboth), Rick (Fay Booker) and Tom (Leslie Faraday), her grandchildren Bill and Laura Rainboth (Shawn Gilbert), Heather Faraday (Boyd Keller), Jason, Dominic (Larisa), Sarah (Markku Heino), Cathy, Vicky (Andy Devolin), Krista and Cameron Cassidy and her great-grandchildren Jacob, Emma and Wyatt Keller, Mikko Heino and Lillian Devolin. Survived by her sisters-in-law Muriel Cornwall (Joe) and Patricia (Stuart Williamson) of Seattle and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Agnes (Jim Landry) and Rita (Leonard Craig), her brother Joe (Muriel Cornwall) and her granddaughter Julia. Viola enjoyed life. Along the way she made and kept numerous friends of all ages, from Eileen Nichols in grade one, Helen Brennan in high school, right up to her stay ay Queensway-Carleton Hospital where her roommate Sandra O'Brien was so kind to her. During her early years, she lived and went to school in the St. Anthony's Church area at 807 Gladstone Avenue. Family years at 119 Irving Avenue in St. Mary's Parish gave way to downsizing at 3100 Carling Avenue, then Ambleside II and in 2003, to Central Park Lodge in Our lady of Fatima Parish. Throughout the years there were card games with friends, the CWL, Women of St. Anne, family vacations, dieting, exercising, Lake Clear, Thomas (the cat), Mitzie and Trixie (the dogs), square-dancing, bottling wine, the Casino, bumper pool, the cottage on the Clyde River, children, graduations, weddings and grandchildren. Viola worked in the Federal Government during the war years and after marrying Bill in 1942 and starting a family, she eventually went back to work part time at the then Canadian Figure Skating association (now Skate Canada) for Charlie Cummings. She joined the Federal Government's Centennial Commission to help prepare for 1967 celebrations and then went on to Heritage Sites Canada. Viola loved to travel and over the years she and Bill were in England, Ireland, Wales, Spain, Portugal, Florida, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, cruises and to many other Canadian and US destinations. Their favourite place was Barbados and they went there for various lengths of time every year for over 25 years. It was a wonderful time where many good friends were made, parties attended, rumoli games and slot machines played, ocean swims taken, rum punch made and consumed, family and friends visited, flying fish and rotis eaten and much dancing to the Merrymen. Viola was always ready to go on the next adventure and her lively, loving spirit will be missed by family and friends. Many thanks to their friends and the caring staff at Central Park Lodge. Thank you also to the staff, clergy and volunteers at Queensway-Carleton Hospital, Retire-At-Home Services and Father John DeCoste for his many visits and blessings. The second daughter of the late Yoshisuke and Tsuji Yamada of Japan. She came to Canada and settled in Vancouver. Following the war, the family moved to Montreal where she lived until 2003. She was predeceased by her husband Kanejiro. She was a loving mother to her four children Ted (Toshiko Nakatsuka), Hanna (Harry Tabata), Jennie (late James Onodera) and Jane (Toyokozu Ebata). She will be greatly missed by an extensive family including thirteen grandchildren; Stephen, Stanley, Nancy, Joy, Leslie, Robert, Marlene, Joanne, Gerry, Linda, Donna, Susan and Sharon and twenty-two great-grandchildren. Prédécédée par ses fils, Normand et Hubert. Son souvenir restera gravé dans la mémoire de ses 13 petits-enfants et ses 5 arrière- petits-enfants. MANTHA, Marguerite - Passed away at Eastholme Home for the Aged, Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at the age of 79. Marguerite (née Watters) was the beloved wife of the late Jeffrey Mantha and loved mother of Susan Schubert (Brian). She will be lovingly remembered by two grandchildren, Dana and Ryan and one great- grandchild, Carter. Dear sister of John, Bernard 'Bunny' and Pat Watters. She was predeceased by one son, Peter, her parents, Bernadette (née Gregoire) and Peter Watters, three sisters, Lois Morland, Theresa McDonald, Patricia Authier and two brothers, Edward 'Coke' and Peter Watters. Marguerite was employed with CIBC as head teller for 40 years from 1944 to 1984. HARRISON, Douglas Stewart - May 28, 2007 at North Bay, ON in his 86th year. Beloved husband of Ina Sheridan, father of Patricia Harrison and Janet Harris. Predeceased by sons George and Thomas. Dear brother of Mrs. Bruce Grieg (Anne) OF Newmarket. Son of the late Robert and Kate (Baker) Harrison, predeceased by brothers Harry, Bill and sister Mrs. Ted Williamson (Reta). Douglas was born and raised in King, Ontario in a tiny farming community known as Snowball. Doug married Ina Sheridan of Newmarket in September 1943. They purchased the Aurora Dairy, which they owned for 13 years, selling the plant to Glenville Farms Dairy in Newmarket. Doug retained part ownership as Director & Manager. Doug was a very active young businessman in Aurora and involved with the organization of the town's first Junior Chamber of Commerce as well as an active member of the Aurora United Church. Doug joined the Lions Club in 1947 and was a life member of the Masonic Lodge. In 1959 with their family, Doug and Ina moved to Northern Ontario after purchasing North Bay Pure Milk Dairy. Doug operated and expanded his business until 1974 when he sold the production end to Eplett Dairies. Doug retired in 1987. Doug's passion was the Lions Club and he was an extremely active member for 60 years. He was District Governor Lions Int'l in 1969 and twice President of the North Bay Lions. The Northern Ontario Dairymen's Association had Doug serve as Secretary Treasurer for many years and he was also a member of the Ontario Milk Distributors Association. Doug attended Trinity United Church in North Bay. He was a staunch Conservative supporter and active member. He leaves 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews as well as countless friends. Visitation will be on Thursday May 31st from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 pm. Alda M. Trites Alda M. Trites, widow of the late Kenneth O. Trites (June 2000) of Manoir Notre Dame and formerly of MacBeath Ave., Moncton, passed away at her residence on Wednesday, May 30, 2007. Born in St. Edouard de Kent, she was the daughter of the late Eric and Adele (Thibodeau) Renaud. Alda was a former employee with the T. Eaton Co. Ltd. and with her husband Ken, they were the former co-owners of Acadia Weed Control. She was a former volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels and enjoyed art and painting. A devoted wife and mother who will be sadly missed by her son, James (Jim), Halifax; sister, Leona Maynard (Edward), Enfield, ME; brother, Aldeo Renaud (Marie Reine), Moncton; several nieces and nephews.
