Marie Lina Fiset (Clements) of Elk Lake died at the Englehart and District Hospital on July 5, 2005. She was born in Elk Lake on February 8, 1935 to Charlie and Vi Clements. On November 15, 1961 she married Guy Fiset in Elk Lake. Mrs. Fiset is survived by her husband Guy; sister Jean Mackey (husband Ken Mackey); daughter Sherry Fisher (husband Dave Fisher); son Shawn Fiset; and granddaughter Amy Fisher. She was predeceased by her parents Charlie and Vi Clements, brother Paul “Huck” Clements. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart with the memorial service conducted by Lionel Venne at the Elk Lake Cemetery. Cremation has occurred with burial at the Elk Lake Cemetery. In memory contributions were made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

After a three year battle with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), David John Mason of Harris Township died July 12, 2005 at the Temiskaming Hospital. He was born to William and Mabel Mason at his aunt and uncle’s home on Rebecca Street in New Liskeard on April 8, 1946. Educated at Ball’s School in Harris Township and New Liskeard High School, he worked in installations and repair with Northern Telephone in Timmins and New Liskeard for over 30 years. In 1981 he received an OPP Commendation for saving someone’s life. Mr. Mason is survived by his mother Mabel; daughter Shannon; son Manse; sisters Claire White (Mel McNaughton) and Pat Maille; brother Donald (Betty); and Tisha who cared for him like a daughter. He was predeceased by his father William “Bill” Mason. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel with Kent Fielder officiating, the eulogy was delivered by Jim Goddard. Cremation has occurred. Donations to the ALS Society - Ontario Division or Temiskaming Hospital Palliative Care would be appreciated by the family.

Northview Nursing Home resident Ruth Bowering died on July 15, 2005. She was born to Francis Cockwill and Christina Steele at Meldrum Bay, Manitoulin Island, on October 22, 1921. In 1988, after retiring from Eaton’s, she moved to New Liskeard from Toronto and in May 2005 moved to Northview. Predeceased by her husband in 1956, she is survived by her children Gail (husband Ron Morris) of Scarborough, Michael of Scarborough, Susan (husband Chris Kirr) of Tillsonburg, David (and Gwen) Bowering of New Liskeard, Joanne (husband Declan Griffin) of Toronto; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law Orland Wismer of Silverwater, Ontario, Vera Hand of Winnipeg, Dorothy and John Keane of Victoria and Harry Bowering of Edmonton. She was predeceased by her parents, siblings and one grandchild. Cremation has taken place and at her request there was no service. Interment in Meldrum Bay will take place at a later date.

Patsy Leonard (nee Morin) died suddenly at her home in Cobalt on July 9, 2005 at the age of 55. Mrs. Leonard was born on May 6, 1950 in Haileybury to Lionel (Con) Morin and Phyllis Evans. She was educated at Cobalt and worked at Temiskaming Lodge in Haileybury for 21 years. More recently she was the owner of Gramma’s Chipper in North Cobalt. On May 27, 1967 she married her loving husband Armand Leonard. Mrs. Leonard was predeceased by her parents and sister Brenda Plaunt-Brunet. She is survived by her loving husband Armand Leonard; son Aaron Leonard (and Jean Belanger) and daughter Rhonda (and Vic) Legault; grandchildren Chelsea Leonard, Bradly and Trevor Legault; siblings Denis Morin, Jack Morin and Gary Morin. The funeral was arranged by Buffam Léveillé Funeral Home with the service held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Haileybury on July 12. Reverend Ken Amer officiated. Pallbearers were Aaron Leonard, Victor Legault, Jack Morin, Gary Morin, Derek Morin and Andy Brunet. There was also an Honour Guard which consisted of approximately 30 members of the nursing staff at Temiskaming Lodge. Relatives and friends attended from Barrie to British Columbia — all across Canada. Memorial contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Welley Renaud of Notre-Dame-du-Nord, Quebec, died July 12, 2005 at the age of 55. Mr. Renaud was predeceased by his wife Jane Batisse. He is survived by his loving daughters Brenda Batisse (Denis Presseault) and Evangeline, granddaughters Isabella and Emily and many other relatives and friends. Brian George Hiltz of Brussels, Ontario died at his home on July 22, 2005. He was in his seventieth year. After a lengthy illness, Doris Margaret Walton died at the Englehart and District Hospital on July 30, 2005. She was born in Hanbury on October 19, 1919 to George and Violet Peebles and married Sydney Walton in Charlton on May 3, 1943. Mrs. Walton, a member of St. Paul’s United Church in Charlton, is survived by her husband Sydney; children Sydney (and June) of Englehart, Kenneth (and May) of Maberly, Rosemary of Barrie and Thomas (and Donna) of Morrisburg; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother Murray Peebles and sister Ella Wates. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart where the service was conducted August 3 at 11 a.m. by Reverend Peter Dahlin. Burial is at the Brentha Cemetery. Doreen Stanger Polson of Notre-Dame-du-Nord, Quebec, died on August 19, 2005 at the age of 64. Mrs. Polson was predeceased by her parents Peter Stanger and Beatrice Potts, her brothers Jimmy and Rene Stanger and her sister Ida Stanger. She is survived by her husband Larry Polson and her loving daughters Velma (Kevin Chief), Debra (Luc Leduc), Amy (Lloyd Thivierge) and Patsy; her two loving sons J.J. and Mark; 10 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and many other relatives and friends. Minnie Larocque died peacefully at the Community Nursing Home in Port Perry on August 5, 2005. Born September 2, 1914, she was in her ninety-first year. Mrs. Larocque was predeceased by her husband Victor Larocque and children Jimmy, Larry and Carol, three sisters and four brothers. She is survived by children Shirley (Bruce) Cummings, Joan (Manson) Woods, Ron, Rick (Elaine), Paul (Eva), Deborah (John) Dekkers and son-in-law John Phillips; 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; siblings Melbourne, Rita, Mabel and Lillian. The funeral was arranged by the Low and Low Funeral Home in Port Perry where the service was conducted August 7. Interment was held August 8. Officiating was Reverend Michael Bishop.

Reginald Coe of North Cobalt died at his home on August 18, 2005 at the age of 71. Mr. Coe is survived by his loving wife Christine; sons Reggie Coe and family, John Coe and family; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sister Evelyn McNaul; nephew Russell Coe; and niece Lynda Plouffe. A memorial mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in North Cobalt on Thursday, August 25 at 1 p.m. Father Germain Turcotte will officiate. Memorial contributions to the Canadian Cancer Society will be gratefully acknowledged by the family. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Buffam Leveille Funeral Home in Haileybury.

After a lengthy illness, Margaret Elizabeth Taylor died on August 31, 2005 at the Temiskaming Hospital. Mrs. Taylor was born in Walkerville, Ontario in 1923 to Sylvester G. Vail and Leta M. Vail. She was educated at Walkerville Collegiate and the Toronto General Hospital School of Nursing. She married Thomas Taylor in Windsor in October, 1946. Mrs. Taylor was a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Timmins and at the New Liskeard and District Hospital. She ran the Railway Garage for several years after the death of her husband in 1978. Mrs. Taylor trained at the Toronto General Hospital School for Nurses and was a registered nurse by profession. During the 1960s and the 1970s she served in all of the executive positions of the New Liskeard Graduate Nurses Association. Good quality health care for the Temiskaming region was a huge priority for her. She served on the Temiskaming Hospital Board and was the chairman of the board at the time that the new hospital was built and officially opened. She also was the secretary of the Temiskaming Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Taylor was also a past president of the Home and School Association at New Liskeard Public School and past president of the local Girl Guide Association. As well, she volunteered her time for the Association for the Mentally Retarded and for local blood donor clinics. Her involvement with St. Paul’s United Church led her to serve on the board of Northdale Manor. She also was president of the Congregation and Official Board of the church, chairman of the Christian Education Committee and active in the Sunday School for 20 years. Mrs. Taylor was awarded the Ontario Bicentennial Medal in 1984 in recognition of her volunteer work in the community. Predeceased by her husband Thomas and brother J. Gordon Vail of North Carolina, Mrs. Taylor is survived by her daughters Wendy, Margo (Michael Kondrashov) and Lesly (Dan Pearson) and son Grant. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard with the memorial service conducted at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church by the Reverend Janice Hamalainen. Cremation has occurred.

Sylvina Anderson died on September 2, 2005 in Hamilton after suffering a heart attack. She was born in Notre Dame du Nord, Quebec, on May 16, 1924 to Ernest Remi Perrier and Edith Mae Hewitson. Educated in New Liskeard, she worked as a bookkeeper and served during World War II from August 8, 1944 to September 11, 1945. She married George Ross Anderson in Toronto on June 28, 1945. Mrs. Anderson was predeceased by her husband on May 6, 1988. She is survived by her daughter Judith Hoover of Cobalt, sister Christine Coe of North Cobalt, and sons Daniel Dupuis of Toronto and Robin Dupuis of Alberta. The funeral service will be conducted by Father John Lemire at St. Patrick Church in Cobalt on September 16. Burial is at Holy Cross Cemetery in Haileybury.

Former New Liskeard and Kirkland Lake resident Grace Mae Walton died September 2, 2005 in Oakville. She was 95. Mrs. Walton was born in New Liskeard to Ella and James Peddie. She was predeceased by her husband John Victor Walton, parents Ella and James Peddie, son Victor Walton, sisters Mabel and Ethel and brothers Martin, Albert, Wilbert and Fred. She is survived by her son Terry (spouse Shirley) Walton of Oakville, six grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. A private family service was held at the Monette and French Funeral Home in Kirkland Lake. Burial was at the Kirkland Lake Cemetery. Donations in memory of Mrs. Walton to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated by the family.

George Axten of Bear Island died on September 18, 2005 at the Temiskaming Hospital. Mr. Axten is survived by his children Kevin (and Cindy) of Windsor, Ryan of Hamilton, and beloved grandchildren Ethan and Nora, his wife Millie Becker of Bear Island, his sister Joan Corriveau (and Raymond) of Midland, sister-in-law Teresa Axten of Penetanguishene, along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents William and Marion Axten and brother Donald Axten of Penetanguishene. Mr. Axten was a veteran of World War II and served his country with pride. The family received friends at the Bear Island Community Center on Monday, September 19. Funeral mass was held on Tuesday, September 20. As per Mr. Axten’s wishes, cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Parkinson’s Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation in memory of Mr. Axten.

On September 15, 2005 Paul Clarence Tessier died at Northview Nursing Home in Englehart. He was born in New Liskeard on December 5, 1943 to Eva Champion and Clarence Tessier. Mr. Tessier is survived by his siblings Barb Bridges, Clara Keating (Pat), twin sister Pauline Carter (Bill), Judy Savarie (Ron), Brenda Yandeau (Brian), Roger Tessier (Diane), Clyde Tessier (Brenda) and Louie Tessier (Cindy); sisters-in-law Clay O’Neill, Betty Tessier, Joan Baker and Joanne Thomas; and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Tony O’Neill, Alfred Tessier and Terry Tessier; brother-in-law Bob Bridges. The funeral service was conducted by Lionel Venne at the Roman Catholic Nativity Parish in Elk Lake on September 19. Pallbearers were Timmy Tessier, John Savarie, Terry Tessier, Bill Carter Jr., Steven Carter and Philip Carter. Burial is at the Elk Lake Roman Catholic Cemetery. In memory contributions were made to the Elk Lake Recreational Multi Purpose fund.

Barbara Joyce Brule died at the Timmins District Hospital on October 1, 2005 at the age of 69. Mrs. Brule was born in Peterborough September 19, 1926 and most recently made her home at 100 Market Street, New Liskeard. Mrs. Brule was predeceased by her parents George and Ellen Fraser. She is survived by her children Danny (and Judy) Barker, Darlene Barker, Ralph Barker, Kenny Barker and Melody (and Marc) Ethier; grandchildren Chris, Amanda, Paige, Ian, Catherine, Chris, Natasha, Danny, Brandy, Jason and Dominic; and great-grandchildren Breanna, Jordan, Kelyanne and Braydon. The funeral service was arranged by Buffam Leveille Funeral Home and held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Highway 11B, Edward Street, at Moore’s Cove in Haileybury on Wednesday, October 5 beginning at 10 a.m. Funeral service followed at the Church at 11 a.m. President Brad Sauvé officiated. Interment will take place in the family plot at the Englehart Cemetery. Delia Eva Zanin died suddenly at her home in Cobalt, on September 21, 2005 at the age of 55. Born in Haileybury, she had been a lifelong resident of Cobalt. Ms. Zanin was predeceased by her parents Fiorindo and Laura Zanin. She is survived by her loving brothers Val (and Brenda) Zanin and John (and Fawn) Zanin, nieces and nephews Andrea, Benjamin, Joshua, Mark and Marie-Josée (and her husband James Reid); and her great-niece Chloé. The funeral was held at the Buffam Leveille Funeral Home in Haileybury on Sunday, September 25. Reverend Linda White officiated. Interment followed in the family plot at the Cobalt Catholic Cemetery. The family of Margaret Mary Dunning announce, with sadness, her passing on October 2, 2005. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Herbert Dunning, in 1979. Her eight children — Ruth, Margaret, Helen, George, Jim, Bill, John and Dorothy — are proud of her staunch belief in Cobalt, her determination that Northern lives be celebrated and that the arts in our Northern communities be acknowledged. She was a driving force behind the establishment of the Drummond Cairn adjacent to the library in Cobalt and, for many years, enjoyed her volunteer work at the Temiskaming Art Gallery. Some in the Tri-Town area might even remember when she taught them in grade school. She also leaves 21 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. The family would like to pay tribute to her close friends, Gwen Smith, Lois Armstrong, Mary Halstead and her neighbour John Hunt who were so loyal to her over the years. We also recognize the superb assistance in recent years of the Temiskaming Home Support team and Rainbow Providers. A profound thank you to Dr. T. McDermott for his compassion and professionalism and to the doctors and nursing team at the Temiskaming Hospital. From February 2, 1914 to the day she died, Margaret “lived a life and then some.” May she rest in peace.

After a short battle with cancer, Betty Lee Bailey (nee Tremblay) died on September 25, 2005 in Calgary, Alberta. Born and raised in New Liskeard, she was in her sixty-fourth year. Mrs. Bailey was predeceased by her husband Ron; parents Lea and Beatrice Tremblay; brothers Kenny and Dan; and an infant brother and sister. She is survived by her children Cathy of British Columbia, Gail Dyck of Calgary, Rod and Mark of Medicine Hat; granddaughter Jamie and two grandsons; and siblings Caulleen Peever, Doreen Galley, Ileen Preston, Bob, Len, Allen, Ron, Murray, Terry, Dick and Rusty Tremblay; and by many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bailey requested no funeral or visitation be held. Cremation has occurred.

Vincent Auger died on April 3, 2005 at the Temiskaming Hospital at the age of 43. Mr. Auger is survived by his loving wife Nadine; stepchildren Sierra and Lucas; father Peter Auger; sisters Martine (Nick) and Christine (Drew). He was predeceased by his mother Angele Auger. We say goodbye to one of God’s great creations.

Tri-Town Extendicare Nursing Home resident Stanley George Chandler died April, 8, 2005. He was born in Oakville to William Chandler and Pauline Pollard on November 4, 1914 and moved to Kirkland Lake in 1940. On June 28, 1940 he married Joyce McLeod in North Bay. Mr. Chandler and his brother Ralph were partners in Heath and Sherwood Ltd. until they retired in 1964. He was an ace pilot and an avid fisherman and gardener. Mr. Chandler was a member of the Kirkland Hospital Board, the museum board, the Kinsmen Club, the Corinthian Lodge, chairman of the Daycare Centre, the tourist committee and was a town councillor. Mr. Chandler was predeceased by his wife Joyce in 1983; brothers Harold, William and Ralph; and by his sister Margaret. He is survived by his son Roger (Linda Neil) of St. Joseph Island; daughters Brenda MacDonald (Norman) of Haileybury and Jo-Anne (fiancé Garry McNeil) of Toronto; grandchildren Dean, Robert and Tammy MacDonald, Jennifer and Melanie Chandler; great-grandchildren Rebecca, Daniel, Allison and Hunter MacDonald. A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Chandler’s life will be held at the Tri-Town Masonic Building in Haileybury on May 14 from 2-5 p.m. Everyone is welcome. In memory contributions were made to the Temiskaming Hospital CAT Scan Fund.

Asta Verina of Haileybury died April 10, 2005 at the Temiskaming Hospital. She was born in Paide, Estonia, on June 9, 1920. She moved to Sweden in the 1940s and came to Canada in May, 1949. She met her husband Joseph in Toronto in the early 1950s and they were married November 11, 1955 in Toronto. Mrs. Verina lived in Toronto, Sudbury and Capreol and moved to Haileybury in 1969. Her family owned the former Tri-Town Motor Inn in Haileybury. Predeceased by her husband Joseph on September 2, 1977, she is survived by her daughter Sandi and grandson Warren of Haileybury. There was no funeral service. In memory contributions to Camp Quality, Northern Ontario, would be appreciated by the family.

Ray Thomas of Englehart died April 13, 2005 at the Englehart and District Hospital. He was born in Englehart on August 8, 1935 to George Thomas and Beatrice Judd. Educated in Kirkland Lake, he farmed in Southern Ontario before moving North from Aylmer in 2000. Mr. Thomas spent happy times in the bush with his wife cutting wood and taking quiet walks. He took great pride in his vegetable garden he planted each year. Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife Dora (Dodie); daughter Cherie; son Les; mother Beatrice Judd; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father George Thomas and stepfather George Judd. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart where the service was conducted April 17 by Reverend Peter Dahlin. Burial is at the Englehart Cemetery. Harold William Brunette died peacefully at the Temiskaming Hospital on April 16, 2005 at the age of 86. He was born in Cobalt to Joseph and Matilda (nee Church) Brunette. Mr. Brunette was predeceased by his loving wife Frieda on January 2, 2004 and by his parents. He is survived by his loving sons Lee (and Barbara) of Kirkland Lake and John (and Carolyn) of Orangeville; grandchildren Rachel, Jason (and Danielle) and Gillian; and brother Arthur of Toronto. The funeral was arranged by Buffam Léveillé Funeral Home where the service was conducted on April 19 by Reverend Kitty Miller. Richard David Lamond of Tomstown died April 15, 2005 in Englehart. He was born in Kirkland Lake on February 28, 1973 to David Lamond Jr. and Evelyn Lamond. Educated in Kirkland Lake, he worked at Wabi Development as an industrial mechanic and welder. Mr. Lamond enjoyed working on automobiles and welding. He loved the outdoors, his pets and socializing with friends and family. Mr. Lamond is survived by his wife Donna (Gravel); stepdaughters Roxanne, Melina and Adele Gravel; his parents David Lamond Jr. and Evelyn Lamond; brother Todd Lamond; sisters Rhonda Lamond, Cindy Kirkbride, Tina Kirkbride, Christine Ellerton and Melody Denomme; nieces and nephews Ashley Barrette, Jody and Drew Hack, Kelsey Froelick, Kaitlyn Peddie and Jennifer Denomme; and grandsons Cole McLean and Gage Matthews Gravel. He was predeceased by his grandfather David Lamond Sr. and grandmother Eva Lamond; sister Roxanne; and grandparents Herman and Eva Yarkie. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart with the service conducted April 19 by Reverend Peter Dahlin. Cremation has occurred. Vera Warner (nee Waugh) died April 23, 2005 at Extendicare Nursing Home at the age of 95. She was predeceased by her husband Charlie Herman Warner on January 2, 1988, her parents Thomas and Addarah Waugh, brothers Tommy, Jim, Murril and Bill Waugh, and sisters Margaret Shephardson-Taylor, Adaline Bradford, Beatrice Tremblay and Elma Hie. Mrs. Warner is survived by her son Gordon Allan Warner (wife Eleanore); grandchildren Cindy O’Sullivan, Pam (Michael) Clair, Christine Cummings, Patty-Sue (Tony) Oliver and Gordie Warner Jr. (Tracey Mayrand); great-grandchildren Liam and Caitlyn O’Sullivan, Jason, Charles and Nicholas Clair, Kyla and Kealey Cummings, Riley and Aleah Oliver; sister Christine Rogers; brother Connie Waugh; sister-in-law and best friend Doris Waugh; loving nephew Wayne (Denise) Rogers and by numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Warner was an active member of the United Church Women of the First United Church. The funeral service was held April 26 at First United Church with Reverend Dale Young officiating. Interment took place at the Pioneer Cemetery in New Liskeard. Remembrance donations to the First United Church Fund would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Alma Jennie Surtees died peacefully, with her family by her side, on April 21, 2005 at the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge. Mrs. Surtees was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, George Wesley Surtees, in May of 1981; infant son Dale; and 10 brothers and sisters. She is survived by her children Mervyn of Harrow, Ontario, Arnold (Judy) of Bent River, Wayne (Gail) of Harrow, and Carol Inch (Bill) of Bracebridge; grandchildren Kim and Chanin Griffin, Mitchell and Jennifer Inch, Kevin Surtees, Kim Clifford, Kelly Fry, David Surtees and Cheryl Dempster; several great-grandchildren; siblings Esther Palmateer (Ron), Wilma Horner, Eileen Brennan (Bill) and Morris Toye. On May 10, 2005 Cornelius J. Van Hoorn Sr. of Cobalt died at the Temiskaming Hospital. He was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands on December 20, 1932 to Cornelius Van Hoorn and Augustine De Vrise. Educated in Holland, he came to Canada from Rotterdam in the late 1950s. He worked as a security guard at Weyerhauser in Princeton, British Columbia. On March 20, 1985 he married Madeleine Robitaille in Princeton. Predeceased by his parents, Mr. Van Hoorn is survived by his wife Madeleine, son Casey Van Hoorn Jr., daughters Dorina Zeinsky and Karina Van Hoorn, son Andre Van Hoorn, granddaughter Natasha Van Hoorn and other grandchildren in B.C., as well as many brothers and sisters. The funeral was arranged by Buffam Léveillé Funeral Home in Haileybury. Cremation took place in Rouyn.

George Thomas Schell Sharpe Township resident George Thomas Schell died May 5, 2005 at the Englehart and District Hospital. He had been ill for one year with heart disease. He was born in Englehart on December 18, 1934 and was educated in Charlton. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and in 1982 married his wife Maya in Haileybury. Mr. Schell was an outdoorsman who loved living at Long Lake where he grew up, cottaged and retired. He is survived by his wife Maya; children Debbie (Roy), Tom, Barbara (John), Bonnie (Lee) and Megan; sisters Ruth and Viola; brother Earl; 13 grandchildren, eight grandchildren and beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Marianne and stepfather Albert Pascoe, father Walter Schell, brother Bruce Schell and son George Schell. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart where the viewing took place on May 9. There was no service, cremation to follow. Relatives and friends attending from out of town came from Toronto, Bolton, Charlottetown and Halifax. In memory contributions were made to the Canadian Multiple Sclerosis Society.

On May 9, 2005 in Dorchester, Ontario, Ivan Dambrowitz died in his sixty-third year with courage and grace surrounded by the love and care of his family and many friends. Mr. Dambrowitz is survived by his wife Cecelia (nee Dunkin); children Christopher (Amy) and Timothy (Michelle); grandchildren Trenton, Katey and Ian; mother Jessie Dambrowitz; siblings Ottily (Jim), Sylvia (Mike), John (Louise), Fred, Georgina (Doug), George (Helen), Ted (Gisele), Lillian (Gordon) and Cathy (Colin); cousins, nieces and nephews; life-long buddy Jack (Ruth), dear Kay Stevenson (Anny), goddaughter Tracey and many faithful friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his father Ernie Dambrowitz. A celebration of Mr. Dambrowitz’s life was held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in New Liskeard on May 13 followed by interment at the Pioneer Cemetery in New Liskeard. The family thanked Dr. Dunkerly and Dr. Swift and all the medical team in London who provided such care. Haileybury resident Mavis Orphia Baker died suddenly at her home on May 10, 2005. She was born in Hilliard Township to Malvin and Haulda Sedor on February 20, 1934. Mrs. Baker was a hard worker who spent most of her life farming. She loved going to garage sales, always looking for a good bargain or a toy or two for the grandchildren. In her spare time she would quilt and knit socks, mitts and slippers for everyone including the homeless for whom she provided socks, blankets and food. Mrs. Baker treated everyone like family and never turned anyone away from her well enjoyed home cooked meals. Mrs. Baker was predeceased by her mother Haulda Sedor, father Malvin Sedor, brother Alfred Sedor, sister Rena Bujold and her brother Avery Sedor. She is survived by her sister Julia Aylward, brother Carman Sedor, sister Milldred Neufeld, brothers Austin, Alvey and Elwell Sedor; sons Mark Russell Baker and Keneth Howard Baker; daughters Marlene Haulda Elliott and Loretta Mavis Baker; grandchildren Kristin Baker, Tiffany Baker, Dustin Bilow, Angie Caron, Jason Baker, Sharron Elliott, Shannon Hack and Tatum Taylor; great-grandchildren Dezmond Campbell, Samaira Caron, Kaylyn Reniak, Hayleigh Reniak, Terrace Hack and Payton Hack. A celebration of Mrs. Baker’s life was held at Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard on May 14. Interment to follow at the Harley Township Cemetery.

Leonard Jonason of New Liskeard died peacefully at the Temiskaming Hospital on May 23, 2005 at the age of 80. Predeceased by his parents Martin and Ethel and son Danny, he is survived by his wife Inez (nee Conroy) of New Liskeard; children Sandra McLellan (Terry) of Dymond and Susan Major (Andy) of Cobalt; sisters Lil Robitaille of Haileybury, Dot Bush of Chaput Hughes and Noreen Fournier (Al) of Chatham; as well as aunts, uncles and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was born in Haileybury to Martin and Ethel Jonason on May 2, 1925. In September 1953 he married Inez Conroy in Haileybury. Mr. Jonason was a member of he Royal Canadian Legion Branch 44 for 33 years. Always an outdoorsman, in recent years his greatest pleasure came from listening to audio books from the local library due to vision problems. In accordance with Mr. Jonason’s wishes, there will be no visitation or memorial service as cremation has already taken place. Gabrielle Corbeil of Notre-Dame-du-Nord, Quebec, died on May 22, 2005 at the age of 83. Julia (Senger) Snider died peacefully at Temiskaming Hospital June 1, 2005. Mrs. Snider was born in Saskatchewan April 16, 1924. She married Jesse Snider of New Liskeard January 10, 1950 in Saskatoon. They moved and settled in New Liskeard in 1956. Mrs. Snider was predeceased by her husband Jesse (June 1, 1997) and her brothers Jack, Frank, Louie and Casper Senger. She is survived by her sisters Kay, Betty, Theresa, and Alice. Mrs. Snider is a cherished mother of Jackie (Herb), Earl (Bridgette), Ruth (Andy), Frank, John (Rachelle), Karl (Pearl), Mark (Joanne), Alice (Terry), Leo (Laura), David, and Lucy (Gary). She is lovingly missed by her 21 grandchildren: Veronica, Cathy, James, Roxanne, Melanie, Nathaniel, Christian, Heidi, Steven, Monika, Stephanie, Jamie, Erik, Dustin, Jacob, Jesse, Sarah, Ryan, Kevin, Alex and Patrick. She is also missed by her 12 great grandchildren: Brady, Kramer, Daniel, Jessica, Christine, Megan, Hannah, Jeffrey, Aaron, Kate, Aiden, and Ryan. The memorial service was conducted at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church in New Liskeard on Saturday, June 4. Cremation has occurred. Dr. John Higgins died in Collingwood Ontario, after a long illness, June 14, 2005. Born on August 25, 1921, in Burlington, Ontario, Dr. Higgins was a family physician in Englehart for almost 40 years, and a long-time resident of the area. He was educated at Western University, and married Catherine McQueen in Kirkland Lake October 30, 1948. Dr. Higgins had a lifelong passion for learning and classical music. He was fortunate to find a place to work and raise a family, that cared for him while he in turn took care of them. He was a member of the Rotary Club and the Masonic Lodge. He was predeceased by his wife Catherine Higgins, and his parents Sarah and William Higgins. Dr. Higgins is survived by his sister Flora Sloski, children Kathryn Oukes, Jacquie Kirkey, Sandy Higgins, John Higgins, grandchildren Ben and Tara Kirkey, Nathan and Brandon Oukes, and Mackenzie Higgins. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home of Englehart, and a memorial service was conducted by Reverend Blake Carter, at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Englehart, on June 17, 2005. Pallbearers were Nathan Oukes, Max Brown, Bob and Wayne Thomas. Burial was at the Englehart Cemetery. Richard Hugh 'Rick' MacWilliams died at the Temiskaming Hospital on June 27, 2005 in his fifty-second year, surrounded by his loving family. Born at Huntsville, he made his home in Haileybury for more than 20 years and resided at 448 Georgina Street. Mr. MacWilliams enjoyed dancing, baseball and hockey, especially the Toronto Maple Leafs. He loved being with people and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Predeceased by his father Hugh MacWilliams, he is survived by his loving mother Audrey MacWilliams of Huntsville; his brothers John (and his wife Gudrun) of Guelph and Bev (and his wife Katie) of Huntsville; his nephew Jon (and his wife Tonya); nieces Alissa and Kimberly; and great-nieces Robin and Madison. Tri-Town Extendicare Nursing Home resident Yvette Snarr died on June 24, 2005 at the age of 65. Born in Cochrane to Alcide and Hosanna Dumas, she was educated in Toronto and married Sidney Snarr on July 17, 1964. Mrs. Snarr loved porcelain dolls. She enjoyed making them and receiving them and she also loved quilting and spending time with her family. Mrs. Snarr was predeceased by her parents and her brothers John and Eli Dumas. She is survived by her husband of 41 years Sidney Snarr; her loving sons Ray (and his wife Jackie) and Ken (and his wife Tina); grandchildren Christopher and Robert Snarr, Lance, Travis and Eric Remillard; great-grandchildren Nicholas, Marcel, and Hailey Remillard; sisters Pat, Hermance and Jenny (and Doug); brothers George (and Pat), Norman (and Cecile), Paul (and Cecilia); and many nieces and nephews. Nora Geraldine Carragher ( Frisby died peacefully at Errinrung Nursing Home in Thornbury on January 15, 2005. She was born in New Liskeard on February 9, 1912 to Maude (McKenzie) and Ernest Frisby. Mrs. Carragher was a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in New Liskeard where she was a longstanding choir member. She had a great talent for beading and other creative crafts. In her youth she had a keen interest in sports, especially swimming where she excelled as a long distance swimmer. While in New Liskeard she enjoyed acting roles and became a president of the drama club. Mrs. Carragher also had a keen interest in music as an accomplished pianist and, in later years, she developed an interest in writing poetry. Mrs. Carragher was predeceased by her husband George, her parents Maude and Ernest Frisby, sisters Blanche Greenwood, Ina Blackmore, Jean Wilkinson, Doris Elliott and Marg Cook, and by her brother Gary Frisby. She is survived by her daughter Molly O’Heany and her grandsons Sean and James. In keeping with Mrs. Carragher’s wishes, cremation has taken place and her remains will be returned to New Liskeard in the spring. She loved her grandchildren, she was always happy and enjoyed being with people. Louiselle Plante of Haileybury died February 20, 2005 at the Temiskaming Hospital. She was born January 2, 1921 in St. Severin de Proulxville, Champlain, to Charles Ayotte and Bernadette Bordeleau. Educated in Guerin, she married Armand Plante on June 9, 1942 in Guerin and moved here in 1950. Mrs. Plante loved to knit, sew and make crafts of all kinds. Her cooking skills could not be surpassed by anyone. Mrs. Plante was predeceased by her husband Armand, daughters Marielle and Diane and by three brothers. She is survived by Denise (Camille), Jean-Guy (Carol), Nicole (Adrien), Normand (Judy), Gilles (Michelle), Ghislain and Daniel (Vicky); 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, four brothers and one sister. Zabel Elvira Mancantelli (nee Dervishian) passed away suddenly in Calgary on Sunday, February 27, 2005 in her 95th year, with her daughter Ann and her son-in-law John by her side. She was born in Constantinople, of Armenian descent. Belle immigrated to Canada with her mother and sister in 1930 following the death of her grandfather, Dr. Haig Baronig Matteossian, a respected physician in Constantinople. In 1934 she married Robert Mancantelli in Toronto. They moved to Northern Ontario where her husband began a career as a Metallurgical Engineer working across the Canadian Shield from Kirkland Lake in eastern Ontario to Eldorado in northern Saskatchewan. They lived in fifteen different communities and made many life-long friends. Belle took an active interest in her church. She golfed until her 80th birthday and was an ardent bridge player. She left her beloved Haileybury, Ontario in 1998 to be with her son and his family in Regina. Later she continued west to be with her Calgary relatives. Her family wishes to express their thanks to Belle’s friends at St. Stephen’s Church and at Royal Park Retirement Residence for their friendship over the past three years. Belle was predeceased by her husband in 1983. She is survived by her daughter Ann (John) Brownlee of Calgary, her daughter Susan Mancantelli of Haileybury, Ontario and her son Rev. John (Clara) Mancantelli of Billings, Montana. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren in whose lives she took such great delight. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church (1121 - 14th Avenue S.W.) on Thursday, March 3, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Brian E. Pearson, officiating. North Cobalt resident Ella May Plaunt died March 14, 2005 at her home. She was born in Haileybury on March 1, 1929 to Arthur and Leila Hurteau. Educated in Haileybury, she married Graeme Plaunt in Toronto on June 28, 1969. Mrs. Plaunt was a waitress, cook and a homemaker. Mrs. Plaunt is survived by her husband Graeme Plaunt; sons Art Handley (wife Cathy) and Larry Handley (wife Gayle); six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by her mother Leila Hurteau, father Art Hurteau, sisters Doris Higgins and Louise Lafleur. Jack Goddard of Whitby died peacefully on March 31, 2005 at Fairview Lodge Nursing Home with his family by his side. Mr. Goddard was born in Harley Township on May 6, 1923 and moved to Whitby in 1948. Mr. Goddard was a General Motors employee and a former Whitby Minor Hockey executive. He was involved with minor hockey from 1960-1992 and was inducted into the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. In 1988 he received the chairman’s special award for outstanding service to minor hockey from the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gertie; children John, Rose and Tom Parker, Mary Goddard; grandchildren Kim and Jackie Goddard, John Christie and Shelley Parker. The funeral service was held at the W.C. Town Funeral Chapel in Whitby on April 4, followed by cremation. In memoriam donations to the Whitby Seniors Centre or a charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.

Lévis Lanoie (1944 - 2006) À l’hôpital Hôtel-Dieu de St-Hyacinthe le 25 octobre 2006 est décédé à l’âge de 62 ans Monsieur Lévis Lanoie Conjoint de Dame Huguette Bessette domicilié à Ste-Madeleine. La crémation a eu lieu au crématorium Yves Houle. Les funérailles seront célébrées samedi le 28 octobre 2006 à 14h30 en l’église de St-Guillaume suivra l’inhumation au cimetière paroissial. La famille de Monsieur Lanoie sera présente au Centre funéraire Yves Houle – L.O. Ponton 85 rue Principale, St-Guillaume afin de rencontrer parents et amis et recevoir les marques de sympathie.
