OBITUARY HYACINTH SIMMONS Hycie passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 13 surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Sydney Simmons. Hycie has left her loving imprint on the hearts of her children Roy (Glenda) Simmons, Amber (Gerry) D'Souza, Rod (Wilma) Simmons and Glenda (Kent) Talbot; her grandchildren Tammy (James), Suzanne (Colin), Amanda (JF), Alana, Alicia, Ricky, Samantha, Garett and Kristen; and her great-grandchildren Parker, Owen, Tyson, Colton and Megan. She is survived by her sister Rita (Harold) Quadros and brother Arnold Saldanha. Hycie was a longtime member of Ogden House and the Ogden Legion. She cherished the many good friends she had cultivated from near and far and worked hard to keep in touch with one and all. Hycie will always be remembered for her independence, love of the telephone and fierce loyalty to family. TAYLOR, Robert John - In loving memory of Robert John Taylor, 81 years, who passed away on Saturday, May 13th, 2006 at his residence. Beloved husband of Dorothy (Carrington) Taylor predeceased 1994. Loving father of Mary Lynn Gauvreau (husband Richard) of Sudbury and Janet Cave (husband Stewart) of Mississauga and James Robert Taylor predeceased 1981. Much loved grandfather of Ian, Brent (wife Sarah), Scott and Shannon. Dear son of John and Lillian Taylor predeceased. Dear brother of Jean Shepherd and Grace Harding (husband Roy) both of Nova Scotia, Edith Cloke (husband Paul) of Arizona, Laura Taylor of Alberta and Nancy Carley (husband Robert) of Manitoba. Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Cherished friend of Doreen Buchanan of Sudbury. Born and raised in Sydney Mines Nova Scotia he enlisted with the RCAF during WWII after which he graduated from the University of Toronto as a mining engineer. He moved to Sudbury in 1949 marrying Dorothy (Carrington) in 1951. A well respected and successful general contractor he operated Carrington Construction for 31 years retiring in 1982. A man of faith he belonged to St. Andrews United Church where he and his wife actively participated in the church's fellowship and ministries. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge and the Sudbury Shrine Club. He was an avid golfer belonging to the Idywylde Golf and Country Club and he was also a skilled bridge player. Robert enjoyed skiing with his family and friends, and spent considerable time with each of his grandchildren. Robert was fondly called the Gentle Giant who generously shared his good humour and inspired work ethic with all he met. He was truly a good shepherd and good Samaritan to his loving family and many friends who take great comfort knowing he is in heaven reunited with his wife and son. He was a senior valuation analyst with the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation having over 25 years service. He enjoyed carpentry, fishing, golfing and spending time at his cabin in Dryden. Ross was always true to his word and he will be remembered as an honest and friendly person who was quick to help others. He was a perfectionist with an inspired work ethic. WHITMAN, Skye Evangeline - In loving memory of Skye Evangeline Whitman, 18 years, who passed away Friday, May 12th, 2006. Skye was loving, hard shelled with a marshmallow inside. She was an independent, stong-minded person, fun loving and physical. Skye loved to draw, read, and listen to music. She loved animals with special thoughts to Twinkle, Benson, Dollar, and Sylphie. Skye was considerate of others and always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends and anyone who needed it. Skye loved Japanese culture and hoped to travel widely. She aspired to be an international Marketing Consultant. MacDONALD Coral 1925 - 2006 In memory of our Mom Coral Yvonne MacDonald (nee Sahara) of Okotoks, was born in Meritt, B.C. and moved to the Calgary Area in 1940. Coral dedicated her life for the betterment of others. She was a Registered Nurse from the Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing. She was nominated in 1994 for the Women of Distinction Awards for Life Time Achievement and was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medals in 1977 and again in 2002 for her contribution to the Health Care Community. She owned and operated Libra Card and Gift in Penny Lane from 1978 to 1981. She held Lifetime Memberships within the Nurses Auxiliaries and Alumnae's for the Holy Cross Hospital, was President of the Alberta Hospital Auxiliaries Association and Vice-President of the Canadian Hospital Auxiliaries. Coral operated the Holy Cross Tuck Shop until the Hospital was closed. She was a Councilor for the M.D. of Foothills from 1991 to 1994. During that time she sat on various committees, one being the Sub-Division and Development Appeal Board. She was Past-President of the Highwood Constituency for the Progressive Conservative Party and held numerous positions over the years. She was still an active member at the time of her death. Coral's passion for helping others and making our community a better place to live will be her legacy to us all. She is survived by her sister-in-law Ann Sahara; children, Beryl (Rocky) Ostrom, Reid (Diane) MacDonald, Karen (Mike) Ouellette, Holly (Dave) Bradish; fifteen grandchildren and special friends. She was predeceased by our father, Dr. W.J. (Mac) MacDonald, brother Reid Sahara and mother Beryl Sahara. PENNER Alexander 1923 - 2006 Alexander Penner, beloved husband of Mary Penner, of Calgary, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2006 at the age of 82 years. Alex served for thirty years with the Calgary Police Service and had previously served with the OPP. He was also a veteran of World War II, serving in the RCAF. Alex took great pride in his family and in his profession, and thoroughly enjoyed hunting, fishing and travel. Besides his loving wife Mary (nee Grant) of twenty-two years, Alex is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Alexander and Arlene Penner; two grandchildren, Drew Penner and Andrea (Shawn) Kelly; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved first wife of thirty-eight years, Mary Klein. DIXON Dr. John Howard May 10, 1920 - May 12, 2006 Dr. John Howard Dixon passed away at Chinook Care Centre in Calgary on May 12, 2006 at the age of 86 years. John was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta on May 10, 1920 and was raised there; later graduating with a science degree from the University of Alberta in Edmonton; a degree in Medicine from McGill University in Montreal; followed by a five-year surgical program in the Montreal area hospitals; and a one-year program at the Lahey Surgical Clinic in Boston. He also served as a Surgeon Lieutenant Commander on the HMCS "Magnificent" aircraft carrier during World War II. Before he could enrol in his surgical program, John and Isabell lived for one year in north west British Columbia where John was the camp doctor for the Taku Mining Co. in Tulsequah. He then returned to Medicine Hat to join his father, Dr. Howard Dixon, in his medical practice for two years. John then moved to Calgary in 1954 where he practised surgery for forty-six years. One of John's greatest pleasures was organizing the annual "River Rats" boating excursions on Alberta and Saskatchewan waterways. Some ninety men joined him on these spring river adventures over a span of twenty-five years. Besides his loving wife, Isabell, John's memory will be cherished by children, Ann (Don) Jenkins, Bob (Rose) Dixon, and Louise (John) Harder; grandchildren, Megs, John (Jen), Laura, Kristian, Karin, David, Dayna, and Jordan. He will also be remembered by his siblings and their families, brother Russ (Sheila); sister Peggy MacGougan; and his predeceased brother, Charles; as well as many friends and professional associates.
