DAVIES, EDWARD BARRIE (1939-2006) Professor Barrie Davies, age 66, died peacefully on January 5th at the DECH, following complications from surgery and a heart attack. He was with loving members of his family and compassionate Intensive Care Unit staff, who included one of his former students. Dr. Davies was a distinguished and cherished, if controversial and iconoclastic, professor in the Department of English at UNB, Fredericton, for nearly 30 years, before an accident in Mexico left him with a serious brain injury and forced him into early retirement in 1995. He was the founding editor of the scholarly journal Studies in Canadian Literature, started in 1975, which has become a staple resource in the field. Barrie Davies was born on 19 February 1939 in Bridgend, Glamorgan, South Wales, the only child of Edward and Kate Lydia Davies. His earliest memories were of London during the Blitz. He spoke Welsh and earned a BA at the University of Cardiff and a BEd at the University of London in the early 1960s. He married and moved to Barbados, teaching English at the University of the West Indies while earning his MA and researching the first major study of West Indian fiction in English. His only child, Caitlin Nicola Davies (now MacTavish) was born in St. Michael's Parish, Barbados, in 1964. Two years later, the Davies moved to Fredericton where Dr. Davies took up his appointment at the University of New Brunswick and, in 1972, completed a PhD. Colleagues and former students remember him as one of those rare "curious universal scholars" who had a voracious appetite both for books and for the life that they seek to make articulate and comprehensible. He enjoyed fishing and gardening, and he deeply loved the rural New Brunswick landscape and the people whom he called, without condescension, "rough diamonds." He was a very gifted jazz pianist, who was photographed playing impromptu boogie on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on New Year's Eve 1988 after delivering a scholarly paper at an MLA conference. With his encyclopaedic knowledge of both literature and history, he brought a cosmopolitanism and passionate intelligence to the classroom and to his research that were both challenging and inspired. His brilliance was tragically marred, however, by episodes of major depression. His courage and spirit were demonstrated when, confined to a wheelchair and told he would never walk again after an attack and robbery in Mexico, he persevered during a long residency in special care homes in the Fredericton area and managed to walk again despite the odds. His intellect, however, was sadly diminished; his research into the life of Captain Morgan remained unfinished; and his single volume of poetry, Pomes de Terre, exists only as a typescript. A great lover of poetry and of life--notwithstanding its frailty, imperfection, and the absurdity of the human condition--, he found his soul-mate in Dylan Thomas; hugely admired Richard Burton; followed Jay Gatsby's difficult green light; and died at the same time as Irving Layton. He was an idealist, sometimes despairing, who stood against conformity and mediocrity. He deeply appreciated E. J. Pratt, whose poem "The Truant" perhaps best captures his own defiant affirmation: "No, by the rood, I will not join your ballet." Barrie Davies is survived by his ormer wife, Jill Valery of Fredericton, and his daughter Caitlin MacTavish of Island View. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Brain Injury Association of New Brunswick or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be gratefully appreciated. McGIVNEY, JOHN CLAREY The death of John Clarey McGivney, of Nashwaak Village, husband of the late Anna Pauline McGivney, occurred on Friday, January 6, 2006 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born in Connecticut, he was a son of the late Curlus and Emily (Clarey) McGivney. Mr. McGivney enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He loved the outdoors. John is survived by four sons, Barry Croll (Betty) of Toronto, ON, John McGivney Jr. of Kitchner, ON, Ricky McGivney of Nashwaak Village, NB and Brian McGivney (Trish) of Keswick, NB; three daughters, Janet Ann Mason of Calgary, AB, Cheryl Croll of Toronto, ON and Julie Stocker (Scott) of Oshawa, ON; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, Ronald, Mike, Pat and Brown. In keeping with the wishes of the family, a memorial service will be held on May 20, 2006 at 2 pm from York Funeral Home's T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel. Interment will take place at Nashwaak Bridge Community Cemetery, Nashwaak Bridge, NB at a later date. NASON, WANDA JOYCE (PHILLIPS) Wanda Joyce (Phillips) Nason of Tracy, NB. passed away at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on January 6, 2006 at the age of 58. Wanda is survived by her husband Cecil Nason, her mother Vera Phillips (step-father Fred Phillips), one son Mark C. Nason, son-in-law Aulden (AJ) Johnston, one sister Dorothy Comeau (Shawn) of Tracy, three brothers Ronnie Phillips (Chris) of Dieppe, Jerry Phillips (Pat) of Nova Scotia, Kenny Phillips(Brenda) of Tracyville, two half brothers Eugene and Jimmy Jones, several nieces & nephews. Wanda was a Homemaker to many seniors in the area. She enjoyed reading and the challenge of a good puzzle. PALMER, MARTY NORRIS The death of Marty Norris Palmer, husband of Bonny Curtis, of Burtt's Corner, NB, occurred on January 5, 2006 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born on July 18, 1956 in Fredericton, NB, he was a son of Norris and Bird (Smith) Palmer. Marty was a painter at CFB Gagetown. He was a country gospel singer and a lover of horses. Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by one daughter, Jillian Michelle Johnston (Kevin) of Douglas, NB; one son, Matthew Marty Palmer (Laura) of Quispamsis, NB; two grandchildren, Emma and Tyson Johnston; one sister, Terri Moore (Paul) of Fredericton, NB; niece, Paige and nephew, Cole. Daryl Hugh Stewart 1953 - 2006 MIRAMICHI, NB - Mr. Daryl Stewart, husband of Linda (Godfrey) Stewart, of Big Ferry Road, Miramichi, passed away in Plaster Rock, on Thursday, January 5, at the age of 52. Born in Chatham on March 5, 1953 Daryl was the son of Bernice (Russell) Stewart and the late George P. Stewart. Besides his wife, he is survived by his two children, Robert (Tanya) Stewart and daughter, Allison Stewart; five brothers, Wayne (Beatrice) Stewart, Miramichi, Ricky Stewart, Miramichi, Gary (Peggy) Stewart, Miramichi, Donnie (Patsy) Stewart, Miramichi and Mark Stewart, Miramichi. He is also survived by his three sisters, Karen (Robert) Fitzgerald, Miramichi, Edna Stewart, Miramichi and Jeannie (John) Stewart, Nanimo, B.C.; two grandchildren, Billy and Emma; also several nieces and nephews. Born in Douglasfield, NB, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Maryann (Bracken) King. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Eileen Fitzpatrick; four daughters, Loretta Trevors, at home, Mrs. Eileen Doyle (James), Miramichi, Mrs. Sharon Somers (Daniel), Whitney, Mrs. Rose Rounce (Glen), Calgary; and one son, Edward (Buddy) Trevors (Katherine), Frederiction; 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Walter A. Dulenty LITTLE SHEMOGUE, NB - The death of Walter Dulenty, age 59, of Murray Corner, occurred at the Cumberland Regional Health Center, Amherst, on Thursday, January 5, 2006 surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Amherst, he is a son of Nellie (Stright) Dulenty and the late Glenn Dulenty. Walter was a former employee of Marine Atlantic, Cape Tormentine until July 1997, and more recent years he was employed with Maritime Stone Works, Scoudouc, NB, he enjoyed his family, grandchildren, his animals, tinkering in his shop, attending blue grass festivals and his woods. Walter will be sadly missed by his mother, Nellie, Little Shemogue; his long awaited ray of sunshine, Catherine Ceretti, Little Shemogue; three sons, David (Julia), Jolicure, NB, Howard, Advocate, NS and Timothy (Amanda Wood), Kingston, ON; a daughter, Tammy (Rowan Patten), Oshawa, ON; four grandchildren, Trevor, Krista-Rose, Avery and Eden; two brothers, John (Ann) and Stanley (Lily); and six sisters, Glenda (Mark) Allen, Karen (Ian) Hurley, Kathy (Dale) Alder, Zerelda MacLean, Nellie-Jean (John) Grant and Muriel (Mike Carroll) Jordan; brother-in-law, Sandy MacCalder; numerous nieces and nephews. DURICK, JOHN WILLIAM The death of John "Jack" Durick of St. Martins, husband of Violet (Langille) Durick, occurred peacefully at the Church of St. John St. Stephen Home, Saint John, on Friday, January 06, 2006. Born in 1912 in Bains Corner, NB, he was the son of the late James Henry "Harry" Durick and Annie (Sullivan) Durick, Brown. Jack was an active member of his community and known by many for his years as a local bus driver, longshoreman, carpenter and operator with the New Brunswick Telephone Co. Exchange in St. Martins. Jack served as chief of the volunteer fire department and was a representative of the Provincial and Federal Liberal Associations. He served many years as President of the Parish Council of St. William's Roman Catholic Church, where he was an active lifetime member. Besides Violet, his wife of 68 years, he is survived by two daughters, Pauline Jackson (Rolf) of Saint John and Dale McLeod (Paul) of Fredericton, one sister, Rita Campbell of Halifax, two half-brothers, Arthur Brown of Belgium and Frank Brown of Saint John, four grandchildren, Angela Donovan (Brian) of Quispamsis, Lorna Peers (Jim) of Vancouver, Sabrina Frank and Sheldon Frank, both of Fredericton, three great-grandchildren, Allan, Holly and Bradley; as well as, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers. Resting at Fundy Funeral Home (646-2424), 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Sunday, January 8, 2006 at 2:00 pm from St. William's Catholic Church, St. Martins with visitation taking place prior to the Mass from 1-2 pm. She was predeceased by her husband, Hilton, on December 20, 1989.
