Jon Robert Olson March 07, 1940 - September 09, 2005 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts, that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend Jon, after a courageous battle with diabetes on Friday, September 9, 2005 at the Concordia Hospital at the age of 65 years. His memory will be forever cherished by his teenage sweetheart and best friend, Patricia, whom he married on June 8, 1963; and by his three daughters, Kimberley (Joey), Tami-Lyn (Greg), and Shannon (Todd), and six wonderful grandchildren, Thomas, Riley, Angela, Tristan, Cody and Corbin. Jon loved his girls and enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow. Jon is also survived by his brother-in-law, Leonard (Cindy), his Aunt Muriel, and numerous cousins. Dad was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by all of his family, friends, and by his loyal companion "shadow". He will always be remembered by his sense of humor and his ability to look at the brightside. Dad enjoyed watching football, tennis, golf, and doing his crossword puzzles faithfully everyday with "Shanny-Bunches". Jon went to school at Tec-Voc High School where he completed the Graphic Arts program, and started his career at Saults and Pollard, (now Pollard Banknote). He then received his teaching certificate from Red River Community College, and went on to become the Graphic Arts teacher at Kildonan East Collegiate, and while teaching he proudly received his Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba. After 25 wonderful years of teaching, Jon retired. He loved working with his students, and built many friendships, which extended well beyond graduation. One student in particular, Steve Antle always fondly referred to him as "Pops", and quickly went from student to family. His friendship with other staff at the school also extended beyond his retirement, and he enjoyed his weekly meetings with the gang. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all of the many wonderful doctors and nurses who cared for him at both the Concordia Hospital and at the Health Sciences Centre. A special thanks to the Paramedics who assisted us at a very difficult time, and to the caring and compassionate staff at the emergency at the Concordia Hospital. In accordance to his wishes, Cremation will take place, following a committal service, celebrating Jon's life, on Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at Neil Bardal Inc., located at 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, at 10:30a.m. Jon touched the lives of so many people and made friends wherever he went. LEWISTON - Armand L. Dallaire, 82, of Lewiston, died Saturday, Sept. 10, at Central Maine Medical Center with his family by his side.Born in Lewiston on June 1, 1923, he was the son of Joseph and Yvonne (Blais) Dallaire. He was educated in Lewiston schools and had been a resident of this community all his life.He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe.On May 6, 1947, he married the former Lorenza Dubois, his wife for 58 years.Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Northern Utilities as a sales manager.He was a member of the 50/50 Club, VFW Lisbon Post, Holy Cross Church and past president of the Lewiston Kiwanis Club.Besides his wife, Lorenza, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Constance) Bennett of Topsham, and Mrs. Claude (Gloria) Landry of Lewiston; two sons, Donald and his wife, Lorraine Dallaire, and Julien and his wife, Susan Dallaire, all of Lewiston; four sisters, Mrs. Wallace (Yvonne) Carville, Ms. Therese Morin, Mrs. Robert (Carmen) Cailler and Ms. Lorraine Gervais, all of Lewiston; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Onil Dallaire; and two sisters, Yvette Bissonnette and Grace Gauthier.

FITCHBURG -- Maurice R. Demers, 81, of 48 Bernard Drive, died Saturday, Sept. 10, at HealthAlliance Hospital/Leominster. He was born in Woonsocket, R.I. on Feb. 14,1924, the son of Emery and Antoinette (Dauphinais) Demers and had resided in Fitchburg for many years. Mr. Demers was employed for many years for the City of Fitchburg as a maintenance worker. Previous to that he worked at the DeJonges Paper Company in Fitchburg. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Demers had moved to Fitchburg from Canada and later was drafted into the the armed services. He was a member of the American Legion Post 429, the Disabled American Veterans, and Amvets of Fitchburg. Mr. Demers enjoyed his winter home in Delray Beach, Fla. He also enjoyed spending time at his daughter’s home with her family and going boating. He enjoyed having his daily neighborhood social meetings with his buddies. Mr. Demers is survived by his wife of 55 years, Noella M. (Mooney) Demers; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan J. and Robert L. Johnson of Lunenburg; and one grandson, Brent R. Johnson of Lunenburg. He was the father of the late Roger G. Demers who died in 1973 and the brother of the late Raymond Demers.DEMERS -- On Sept. 10, Maurice R. Demers, 81, of Fitchburg. Nolan Pitre -- OPELOUSAS -Funeral services for Mr. Nolan Pitre, 87, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, with a Mass of Christian Burial in the Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. The Rev. Bill Ruskoski will officiate the services. Burial will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park.Mr. Pitre died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005, in the Maison DeVille Nursing Home in Opelousas. He will be remembered for his many years of service to the community. He was retired from the Opelousas Police Department with 20 years of service and retired from the St. Landry Parish Sheriff Department with 19 years of service, both under the administration of Howard Zerangue. He was a member of the LA Police Association, LA Sheriff's Association and Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. He was a horse trainer as a young man which led to his hobby of horse racing. He also was a past farmer and a former bus driver. Time spent with his family, friends, and neighbors was important to him. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, and fishing. Mr. Nolan was a devoted husband and a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.Survivors include three sons, Ray Allen Pitre and wife, Geneva, of Opelousas, Norris Pitre, of Opelousas and Wayne Pitre and wife, Regina, of Arnaudville; two sisters, Celeste Latiolais and Theresa Dupre, both of Opelousas; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his wife, Loicy Mae Pitre; one daughter, Linda Pitre, two brothers and two sisters.Visitation will be observed from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. today in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas. On Tuesday, visitation will continue from 8 a.m. until the time of services. FREEHOLD, N.J. — Barbara L. (Southard) Kluesener LaFrenier, 78, of Freehold, N.J., formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at John L. Montgomery Nursing Home in Freehold. Born in Brockton, Mass.,, on June 29, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Arthur H. and Jennie B. (Brown) Southard. She was a longtime member of Emerson Hovey Post 168 Ladies Auxiliary, VFW and Frank E. Booma Unit 6, American Legion Auxiliary.She was predeceased by her husband, Al LaFrenier, on Nov. 6, 1993; and her first husband, Herman Kluesener, Sr. on Aug. 22, 1983. Survivors include her children, Herman B. Kluesener, Phyllis Copeland, Robert D. Kluesener, Jennie Beevers and John T. Kluesener. Murray Barnson Emeneau, a celebrated UC Berkeley professor of linguistics who documented lost California Indian languages, has died. Professor Emeneau, an expert on the Dravidian languages of India, taught Sanskrit, wrote prolifically and put forth the idea of "language areas." He died in his sleep on Aug. 29 at his Berkeley home. He was 101. "Of all the linguists of the 20th century -- general, theoretical, historical or descriptive -- whom I have known personally or with whose work I am familiar, Murray Emeneau is the one I most admire both as a scholar and as a man," said Ron Asher, professor of theoretical and applied linguistics at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and a former student of Professor Emeneau's. Born on Feb. 28, 1904, in Lunenberg, Nova Scotia, Professor Emeneau earned a bachelor's degree at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University, and received graduate and doctoral degrees from Yale University. Professor Emeneau worked for several years as a lecturer and researcher in Sanskrit at Yale, where he was heavily influenced by Edward Sapir, one of the greatest linguists of the 20th century. On Sapir's suggestion, Professor Emeneau went to India in 1936 to study Toda, a nonliterary Dravidian language. He stayed in India for three years, doing pioneering linguistic field work on the Toda, Badaga, Kolami and Kota languages. Professor Emeneau was hired in the classics department at UC Berkeley in 1940 as an assistant professor of Sanskrit and general linguistics. He became an associate professor in 1943 and was promoted to full professor in 1946. During World War II, Professor Emeneau studied Vietnamese, about which he wrote three books and a volume on grammar. Ultimately, he wrote 21 books and more than 100 articles. Professor Emeneau is generally seen as having initiated the modern study of "linguistic areas" in his 1956 article "India as a Linguistic Area," according to a statement issued by UC Berkeley. In 1949, Professor Emeneau served as president of the Linguistic Society of America, writing as his presidential address a paper about the relationship between linguistic and social structures in the area of kinship. Professor Emeneau persuaded UC Berkeley to establish a Survey of California Indian Languages and a Department of Linguistics, which he chaired for several years. For three decades, the Survey of California Indian Languages, which later became the Survey of California and Other Indian Languages, documented words, grammatical structures and texts in dozens of languages, which have few or no remaining native speakers today. "It was and remains an immensely significant institution for the documentation of the indigenous languages of California and elsewhere in the United States outside Alaska and Hawaii," said Andrew Garrett, acting director of the survey and a UC Berkeley professor of linguistics. "It is now probably the most important university archive of documentary material on the languages of the continental U.S.," Garrett said. Professor Emeneau was named the Collitz Professor of the Linguistic Society of America in 1953. In 1954, he served as president of the American Oriental Society. He gave the UC Berkeley Faculty Research Lecture in 1956, and on his retirement from the campus in 1971 received UC Berkeley's highest honor, the Berkeley Citation. Professor Emeneau also received numerous honors and awards. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the British Academy, and an honorary member of the Philological Society and of the Linguistic Society of India, the oldest linguistic professional society in the English-speaking world. William Bright, an adjunct professor of linguistics at the University of Colorado and one of Professor Emeneau's former students, agreed that Professor Emeneau's students learned more from him than just linguistics. "They also learned something about the highest goals and standards of scholarship, about meticulousness in research and writing, about the importance of making one's findings available to colleagues through publication, and about dedicated professionalism, in general," he said. Professor Emeneau is survived by a stepdaughter, Phyllis Savage of Tustin (Orange County). A campus memorial is planned for spring 2006.

Marcel C. Fortin, 63, of Bristol, husband of Jacqueline (Nadeau) Fortin, died on Saturday, (September 10, 2005) at home. Mr. Fortin was born in St. Gedeon, Quebec, Canada on February 17, 1942 and was a son of the late Gerard and Fabiola (Gagne) Fortin. He was a Bristol resident for the past 40 years and was a carpenter, having worked for Lachance Construction before establishing his own business, Fortin and Leblanc. He enjoyed spending time at the family cottage in St. Gedeon and was a member of the Franco American Club of Bristol and St. Gregory Church, Bristol. In addition to his wife, Mr. Fortin is survived by a son, Alan Fortin and Carly Petrosky of Bristol; a daughter, Susan Fortin of New York; a brother and sister in law, Jean Luc and Monique Fortin of Bristol; and many relatives in Canada. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 14 at 9 a.m. from Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, to St. Gregory Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. MIDDLEBORO -- George Albert Nault, 65, of Middleboro, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, surrounded by his family after a long illness. He was the husband of Donna (Erickson) Nault. They were married 41 years. Born in South Boston, he was the son of Dennis J. and Catherine (MacPherson) DeArruda of Lakeville. He served in the National Guard for over 30 years. Mr. Nault first worked at the Lakeville State Hospital for 10 years. In 1966 he went on to work for the Massachusetts House of Corrections in Bridgewater for more than 30 years. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his widow; his parents; two sons, David A. Nault of Salem, N.H., and Darren A. Nault of West Wareham; a daughter, Colleen L. Stewart of Weld, Maine; two brothers, Dennis DeArruda Jr. of Bourne and Larry DeArruda of Middleboro; two sisters, Barbara Bradshaw of Inverness, Fla., and Christine King of Middleboro; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak St. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hope Rest Cemetery.

VAN BUREN - Rene J. Lebel, 80, died Sept. 10, 2005, at a Van Buren nursing home. He was born Sept. 3, 1925, in Hamlin, the son of Antoine and Mary Ann (Roy) Lebel. He was a navy veteran of World War II, and a member of the American Legion, Levasseur-Farrell Post 49 of Van Buren. Rene was employed as a carpenter and millwright for most of his life. He is survived by one son, Alfred "Chou" Lebel and his wife, Lou Ann, of Brewer; three daughters, Rena Violette and her husband, Rene, of Grand Isle, Carline Berube and her husband, Roger, of Van Buren, Maxine Akerley and her husband, Kenneth, of St. Leonard, N.B.; one brother, Herbert Lebel of Conn.; two sisters, Janet Dumond of Biddeford, and Aurore Violette of Connecticut; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Rita, who he and his wife raised from an early age. Rene was predeceased by his wife, Sadie (Langlais) Lebel in 1978; by one grandson, Brent Lebel; two brothers, Lawrence and Leonard Lebel; two sisters, Corinne Bard and Rita Ricker. Relatives and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday, at the Ouellette-Thibault Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren, and 9 a.m. until time of service on Tuesday. WEST RUTLAND — Ernestine Marie St.Arnold, 95, died Sept. 11, 2005, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.She was born Nov. 6, 1909, in West Rutland, the daughter of Walter and Mary (LaCroix) St.Arnold.She was a graduate of West Rutland High School class of 1928.Miss St.Arnold was the proprietor of Ernestine's Beauty Salon in West Rutland for many years, retiring in 1975.She was a member of St. Bridget's Church in West Rutland and Our Lady of the Snows Sodality. She was a former member of Sacred Heart Church in West Rutland.Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Bailey of Rensselaer, N.Y.; nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by six sisters, Bertha St.Arnold, Cecile LeFrancois, Eva Cote, Bernadette Case, Armena Lafond and Beatrice Gouchoe; and by two brothers, Leo St.Arnold and Paul St.Arnold.Visiting hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home in West Rutland.The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bridget's Church in West Rutland. BLAKE, Thelma Margaret (nee Gillespie) - Died peacefully on Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at the Scarborough General Hospital in her 79th year. Beloved wife of the late Vincent James Blake. Loving mother to Terry, Gordon (Linda) and Glenn (Dawna). Generous and caring Nana to Jessica, Logan, Shannon and Colin. Beloved sister of Dorothy (Keith) Hicks, Boissevain, Man., the late Lorraine Gillespie and the late Glenn (Dorothy) Gillespie. Lifetime companion to Vince, an RCAF captain and member of the Canadian Foreign Service, she called the world her home. Thelma was the anchor, creating a home from any circumstance or location for husband and family. She loved gathering with family and friends, hosting fabulous meals and entertaining her guests. Thelma was the life of any party. We will miss her terribly. At Thelma's request, cremation has taken place. A service to celebrate her life was held on Sunday, September 11, 2005 in Kitchener. Dr. Ralph B. DeWare DDS, FICD, FACD 1926 - 2005 SHEDIAC CAPE, NB - Dr. Ralph Baxter DeWare of Shediac Cape passed away at The Moncton Hospital on Saturday, September 10, 2005 at the age of 79. Born in Sunny Brae on March 13, 1926, he was the son of Walter Edmond and Nellie Mahalia (Noble) DeWare. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mabel (Keiver) DeWare; three sons, Dr. Kim (Diane), Peter (Sandra) both of Shediac Cape, and Michael (Peggy) of Moncton; and one daughter, Joanne Blight (Peter) of Riverview; nine grandchildren, Tracy DeWare (Jacques Pinet), Jennifer Kikkert (Steven), Bradley DeWare, Tara Macaulay (Dr. Bruce), Alex DeWare, Emily DeWare, Barry Blight, Becky Blight, and Peter Blight; and seven great grandchildren, Harry and Ben Griffin, Alexandre Pinet, Maxwell and Olivia Kikkert, Jackson and Finlay Macaulay. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Nobel DeWare and his sister, Joyce Bird. Ralph graduated from Moncton High School in 1943 and attended Mount Allison University with the Canadian Army University Corp in Engineering 1943-44. He served with the Canadian Army from 1943-1946. He graduated from Dalhousie University in 1951 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery, practicing in Moncton from 1951-1990. He was past President and Director of the National Dental Examining Board for 16 years, Past President of the Moncton Dental Society, the NB Dental Society, the Moncton YMCA, the Moncton Beaver Curling Club and the Moncton Gyro Club. He was Director of the World Curling Championship in Moncton in 1980. He was a member of Keith Lodge #23 F. & A.M. and a past member of the Moncton Rotary Club, The Royal Canadian Legion, and The Moncton Elks Club. He was inducted into the Fellowship of the International College of Dentists in 1970 and into the American College of Dentists in 1991. He was a dental consultant to the Moncton TB Hospital 1952-1956, the Canadian Naval Base Coverdale 1951-54, and the Moncton Protestant Orphanage Home. He was the Resident Dentist to Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Home from 1979-89. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 pm on Tuesday, September 13, at Fair Haven Funeral Home, 1177 Salisbury Road. Harvey Morris July 11, 1922 - September 09, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Glenwood Funeral Home Harvey Morris of Sherwood Park, passed away peacefully September 9, 2005 in Edmonton at age 83. Harvey is survived by his loving wife Evelyn and family, sons Graham (Linda), Terry (Marylynn) and Kevin (Safia); 9 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and numerous extended relatives and friends. Harvey was predeceased by daughter Kathryn. Harvey was born in Lamont and grew up on a farm by Josephburg with 10 brothers and sisters. He joined the Army at age 18 and transferred to the Royal Canadian Airforce and served in WWII flying many missions over Europe and North Africa. He served with the Royal Airforce stationed in England, Ireland and Germany. Harvey returned to Canada in 1955 where he joined Edmonton 418 Reserve Squadron and embarked on a career in Human Resources retiring from the WCB in 1979 to enjoy his travels, friends and family. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 15, 2005 at Glenwood Funeral Home, South of Wye Road on Range Road 232, Sherwood Park, Alberta. Memorial tributes may be made to the Stollery Childrens Hospital.
