Edna Mildred Greenough August 28, 1917 - March 28, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Atlantic Funeral Home (Dartmouth) GREENOUGH, Edna Mildred - 87, Ocean View Manor, died March 28, 2005, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Hermitage Bay, NL, she was a daughter of the late George and Maria Ann (Simms) Dowding. Edna was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of St. George's Anglican Church, Halifax. She was employed with Birks Jewelers and later as a ward clerk at the VG Site, QEII, until her retirement. For many years Edna was an IODE member of the Westmount Chapter. Surviving are son, Gary (Sharon), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Shauna (Jonathan) Richardson, Calgary, Alta.; Jason, South Korea; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband, Horace; brother, Hubert; sisters, Blanche and Emily. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors on Saturday, April 2, from 10:30-11 a.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, at which time a memorial service will be held, Rev. GORMAN, JAMES EDWARD Word has been received of the death of James E. Gorman of Parksville, B.C., formerly of Marysville, N.B. Born in 1932, Jim was the son of Ritchie E and Margaret (McManus) Gorman. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jean (Dorval, Logan) Gorman, daughter Cynthia Gorman and granddaughter Melissa Macahonic, both of Vancouver, B.C., step-son Richard Logan, stepdaughter Barbara Csordas, both of Victoria, B.C., sister Dorothy Wright (Bill) of Hanwell, N.B., several nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim was predeceased by his parents, brother Ritchie C. Gorman, and sister Phyllis Hovey. Jim was retired after 26 years of service with the Canadian Coast Guard. He was an avid sports fan. Daniel A. Comeau 1981 - 2005 NORTH BAY, ON - Daniel A. Comeau, 23, of Main St. East, North Bay, ON, formerly of Grande-Digue, passed away suddenly at home on March 27, 2005. Born in Moncton, NB on May 25, 1981, he was the son of Brian Comeau and Marguerite (Landry) Comeau. Besides his parents, he is survived by his two brothers, Paul and David of Moncton; two step-brothers, Bobby and Danny; two step-sisters, June of Moncton, Michelle of Winnipeg. DARRAH, (MARY) JANE (Mary) Jane Darrah of Chipman, NB passed away Tuesday, March 29th, 2005 at the age of 100, at the Queens North Health Complex. Born July 3rd, 1904 at Hardwood Ridge, NB. Jane was the daughter of Duncan and Margaret (Kadey) Betts. Jane is survived by four grand children. Margaret Ann Harvey (George) Diane Lapointe, John McNeil, Earl McNeil (Eileen), seven great grand children, eight great-great grand children: stepchildren Gordon Murray, Maisie Chase, Ida Fairweather (Waldo), Hazel Randles (Bill), Archie Darrah (Rita), Bobby Darrah (Sharon), Alex Darrah (Barb), Carrie Darrah (Ray), Vera Protz, Marylou Dickinson (Randy), Johnny Darrah, several step grand children, step great grand children, step great great grand children, several nieces and nephews. Jane was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her husbands, William McNeill, Russell Murray and (Almond) Allie Darrah, one son William McNeill, and his wife Jean, one brother Vernon Betts, five sisters Betty Biddiscombe, Jemima Chase, Margueritte Hickey, Irene Brown and Ruby Bishop. Step children Willard Murray, Muriel Sweeney, Hazen Darrah, Lorna Hopkins and Basil Darrah. Jane was a faithful member of her religious group. Jane always said she had a good life, had worked in the dining room at Harvard University, Boston, cooked at lumber camps and made cookies and do-nuts at home to sell. She enjoyed baking, sewing, visiting and having visitors. Jane Darrah is resting at the CHIPMAN FUNERAL HOME, 28 Northrup Drive, Chipman, NB with visitation March 30th, 2PM to 4PM and 7PM to 9PM. Edith Lloyd 1909 - 2005 RIVERVIEW, NB - Ida (Edith) Lloyd of Royal Court, peacefully passed away Monday, March 28, 2005 at The Moncton Hospital with her family by her side. Born in Alberta, she was the daughter of the late Luise (Doster) and Ernest Henn. Edith's "Gift of Gab" brought joy to so many. As a banker's wife, she moved throughout British Columbia. She always took a leadership role in the United Church and community organizations. Edith had a wonderful sense of family and community and extended generous goodwill to all - above all a loving Mother and Soulful Friend. Edith will be fondly remembered by son, Stuart Lloyd; daughter, Linda (Don) McDonald; grandchildren, Kirsty (Todd) Rabb, Jill (Michael) Ivany, Marcy Ann McDonald, Hamish (April) Lloyd, Rachel (Michael) Kruger, Jennifer (David) Lloyd. Stanley George (Harvey ) Harper 1919 - 2005 Stanley George (Harvey) Harper passed away at The Moncton Hospital on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at the age of 85 years. Stanley Served in the Royal Air Force from 1939 to 1945 - in Italy, France and N. Africa. He came to Canada in 1957. He retired in 1982 after 22 years with the City of Moncton serving variously as Cost Accountant, BudgetOfficer and Internal Auditor. Stanley wished to be remembered as a man of sincerity with deep senses of independence and honesty. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; and his daughter, Anne Harper (Chris) of Boudreau West, NB; his grandson, Gordon MacDonald (Shelley) of Boudreau West, NB and two special great grandchildren, Maddison and Mekenzie and one niece and nephew of Essex, England. He was predeceased by his sister, Winifred of Essex, England. There will be no visitation at Stanley's request. A graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in the spring. Carlyle F. Yuill 1919-2005 Carlyle (Carl) F. Yuill of Moncton passed away in his 87th year at the Moncton Hospital on Monday, March 28, 2005. Born in Truro, NS, he was the last surviving family member of the late Suther P. and Mary (Carlyle) Yuill. Carl was a retired C.N.R. Chief Dispatcher with 45 years service, member of Highfield St. United Baptist Church and former member of the men's choir, he also served his church in various duties in past years. He was a 58 year member and past master of Truro Lodge #43 A.F.& A.M. and member of Acacia Lodge #49 A.F & A.M., Moncton. He was a member of the Moncton Lodge of Perfection, Britton Chapter of Rose Croix, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite and former Chapter Dad of Order of Demolay. He was a member of The CN Pensioner's Assoc. and The Canadian Assoc. of Train Dispatchers, former member of Moncton Curling Assoc., CN Tuesday morning bowling league and former Boy Scout master (Truro). An avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing trips with sons, grandsons and great grandsons, as well as his close friend the late Art Taylor at Lake O Law Resort in Cape Breton (Margaree Valley). Berta Elisabeth Topf Berta Elisabeth Topf, devoted wife and mother, 83, of Moncton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at the Moncton Hospital. She attended Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Moncton. Born February 18, 1922 in Luzine, Silesia, Germany. She was the daughter of the late Hermann and Karoline (Haase) Hubrig. She was the youngest daughter of four. She is survived by her husband, Martin, of 62 years marriage and one son, Volker (Beverley), Moncton. She was predeceased by two sisters, Emma (Fritz) Mann and Anna (Alfred) Lindemeyer, and one brother, Gustav (Berta) Hubrig, and three nephews, Erwin (Dawne) of England, Willie and Helmut Mann of Germany. McKNIGHT, HELEN BESSIE - Helen Bessie McKnight of Great Oaks Special Care Home, Wickham, passed away at her residence on March 29, 2005 at the age 86. Born in Snider Mountain NB on September 17, 1918, she was the daughter of the late George and Merle (Ganong) Brown and the beloved wife of the late Harry McKnight who passed away in 2001. Helen is survived by her daughter; Shirley Harding (Cyril) of Keirstead Mt., two sons; Barry (Yvonne) of Burlington, Ontario; Stephen (Agnes) of Hamilton, Ontario, 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, a daughter-in-law, Doreen of Waterdon, Ont and two sister-in-laws Rosie Brown of Snider Mountain, and Vivian Brown of Sussex. RAVN, GUNNAR - The death of Gunnar Ravn occurred on March 29, 2005 at his home in Millbrook, NB following a brief illness faced with courage and dignity. He was born in 1929 a son of the late Arthur and Laura (Larsen) Ravn. Gunnar is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Lois (Folkins) Ravn and his five children: Christine (Humphrey) Sheenan, New Maryland NB, Mark (Laura) Ravn, Sussex Corner NB, Carol (John) Arnold, Sussex NB, Lorraine (David) Watson, Sussex NB, and Lloyd (Jodi) Ravn, Toronto ON. 13 grandchildren, Erin, Jennifer, John and Rebecca Sheenan; Cally, Zachary and Jacob Ravn; Jeremy and Michael Arnold; Bradley, Hannah and Evan Watson; and Eric Ravn. One sister Sara (Leonard) Folkins), Lacombe AB, and numerous nieces and nephews with whom he was very close. Victoria Wazny February 07, 1909 - March 28, 2005 Peacefully, after a brief illness, Victoria Wazny passed away on March 28, 2005 at the age of 96 at Fred Douglas Lodge. Victoria was born in Melrose, Manitoba on February 7, 1909, the daughter of Andrzej and Antonia Wazny. Victoria had 11 brothers and sisters and was the last surviving member. Victoria was predeceased by her husband Walter Wazny in 1996, her son Robert Wazny in 1993, and her daughter Jane Wazny in December 2004. She leaves to mourn, her daughter Evelyn (Leon) Prucyk of Libau; her son Eric (Barbara) Wazny; daughter-in-law Myrna Wazny; granddaughter Barbara (James) Bardsley of Neepawa; grandson Brian (Catharine) Prucyk of Milwaukee; granddaughter Karen Wazny; granddaughter Janice (Wazny) Gehman, also great grandsons Mark, Jonathon, Geordan Bardsley, and Andrew Prucyk. Mom and Dad were married in 1931 and settled in Oak Hammock, Manitoba in 1934, where they lived until 1995 before moving to Selkirk, Manitoba. There were hard times and hard work but being around Mom always seemed to make things better. Mom was a genuinely kind, generous, nice, good person and was well liked by anyone who came in contact with her. She enjoyed her 1 1/2 years at Fred Douglas Lodge and always referred to it as her home. Victoria’s family would like to thank the staff of Oak Section at Fred Douglas Lodge for the excellent personal and loving care given to our mother. Gertrude "Trudy" Doyle Funeral arrangements by Gordon F Tompkins Funeral Homes (Central Chapel) CANADIAN ARTIST TRUDY DOYLE Canadian landscape and seascape artist Trudy Doyle, 82, of Seeley's Bay and Gananoque, Ont., died March 27, 2005 at St. Mary's of the Lake Hospital, Kingston, Ont., of natural causes. Born Gertrude Shorter in Coventry, England, she moved to Canada in 1951, with her husband James Bernard Doyle, 80, who transferred from the Royal Navy to the Royal Canadian Navy after the Second World War. Trudy won the first of her several art scholarships at the age of 12, studying in Britain under Royal Academicians Walter Ashworth and Victor Candey. She twice won the U.K.'s Sir Thomas White award for artistic excellence. She was also an opera lover and a cellist. Coventry, in the UK's industrial Midlands, was routinely carpet-bombed by German forces during the Second World War and her father, the late Stephen Shorter, a flier in the First World War and a Home Guard member during the second, built his family a self-contained bomb shelter in their back yard, under a fish and turtle pond. Trudy was seconded to the UK defence design bureau during the war and would regularly walk to that job from the home, or the bomb shelter. "You would go to work and rows of buildings that had been there the day before were gone," she recalled more than once. Her family had briefly lived in Alberta between the two world wars and she had studied at the same Alberta grade school as her future husband, although she was a year ahead of him and never recalled meeting him at school. What they had in common was a teaching nun named Sister Fostina, who gave Jim Doyle Trudy's address when she heard that he was shipping out to join the Royal Navy in 1939, at the age of 15, being underage for Canadian forces. Jim Doyle looked up Trudy Shorter when he was granted shore leave and they corresponded throughout the war, marrying soon after it was over at a time when Trudy had started a career as a jewelry designer. She designed her own wedding and engagement ring set, among other works. New to Nova Scotia, Trudy became enthralled by the seascapes and picturesque fishing villages, which were a sharp contrast to her home country. The rugged atmosphere inspired her to pursue her renewed interest in oil painting. She developed a particular lively style of her own, using palette knives to apply the oil paint to canvas or board. At the same time, she started a family, raising six children, all born within a ten-year period. Without really planning it, she emerged a precursor to the modern career-track mother, not simply painting and raising a family simultaneously, but often handling all the logistics when her husband was away at sea with the fleet. Thus, a car loaded with six infants or young children, driven by a mother for the purpose of simply picking up groceries was a frequent sight around Halifax. When her husband retired from the Canadian Navy in the early 1960s, he became a journalist, first for the Canadian Press wire service in Halifax, then the Kingston Whig Standard, and later news editor of the Catholic Register, (then known as the Canadian Register). The family set up a home between Gananoque and Kingston On Highway 2 and Trudy began to paint Ontario and Atlantic Canada scenes, exhibiting at her home's art gallery. Her wide range included various paintings of historic limestone buildings and scenes in Kingston, bridges and ponds in Gananoque, the Thousand Islands Bridge, and scenes from Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley. One of her favorite paintings, showing the Parliament Buildings from a frozen Rideau Canal, hung for years at the Canadian Embassy in the Washington, DC. Her works were regularly exhibited at Studio Coleen on the Sparks St. Mall in Ottawa and at Rye Cove Galleries, Tantallon, N.S. Others entered private collections across the country and around the world. She has had numerous solo exhibitions in Canadian cities as well as York, Coventry, Plymouth and Stratford-upon-Avon in the UK. Certain oil paintings were reproduced as limited edition, numbered prints, which attracted an international following. She was awarded a special commission to create an oil painting for presentation to Princess Anne by Canadian Forces during the princess's 1979 visit to Canada. The painting, entitled "Kingston" now forms part of the Royal Collection in Britain. She is survived by her husband James, of Kingston, now retired from managing the art gallery, and her children David, 42, and Stephen, 45, of Edmonton, owners of a printing and graphics business, Mark, 44, of Toronto, an institutional investment advisor, Anne Doyle-Leverton, 48, of Vancouver and Whitehorse, an artist, Mary Doyle-Seymour, 50, of Ottawa, an artist. By Mary and her husband Paul Seymour, she is survived by grandchildren Vincent, 19, and Theresa, 17, also of Ottawa. She is survived by son Michael, 52 of New York and Southampton, NY, a lawyer, and grandchild Sean Michael, 3 months old, by his wife Magda de Carvalho. Trudy is also survived by grandson Michael Doyle, Jr., 33, of Ottawa and Odessa, Ont., by her son Michael and Darlene Novosad of Kingston. By Michael Doyle, Jr. and his wife Tammy, she is survived by great-grandchildren, Michael, 12, Josh, 10, Chantal, 5, and Tyler, 3. Landry, Lt. Col. Edward Blaise (U.S. Air Force, retired) A resident of Zachary, he died at 6 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2005, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center of unexpected cardiac arrest. He was 74, born Feb. 4, 1931, in Peru, where his father was employed by the International Petroleum Co. He was a graduate of St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, Miss. He graduated from LSU with a degree in civil engineering and a commission in the U.S. Air Force in 1953, having served for 25 years. He was a command pilot and recipient of numerous medals and honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and Meritorious Service Medal. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, he was director of plant operations at the Franklin United Methodist Home in Franklin, Ind. From 1982 to 1994, he was employed as director of utilities for the city of Zachary and continued to volunteer his time to, and share his expertise and knowledge with, the city as chairman of Planning and Zoning after his retirement. His depth of understanding, patience, generosity and love of family and country will be greatly missed. SHYMINSKY, Joseph In loving memory of Joseph Shyminsky, in his 83rd year, who passed away Tuesday, March 29th, 2005 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph's Health Centre. Born in Shoal Lake, Manitoba, at a very early age, he moved to Petlura, Manitoba where he attended school and farmed until 1957, when he married. Joseph and Carol then moved to Sudbury where he worked for INCO until his retirement in 1985. A resident of Val Caron for 41 years, Joe shared his love and knowledge of hunting, fishing and camping with his family. The master of all trades, Joe was the family handyman for his wife, 3 sons and six grandchildren. He contributed to the community as a coach and through his support of the Cubs and Boy Scouts on the Val Caron area. In later years, Joe enjoyed following the sporting events of his grandsons. He truly cherished every minute of life with his family and friends. He has left an imprint on all who knew him. Loving husband for 47 years to Carol Shyminsky (Kempinski). Loving father of Garry (wife Cindy) of Hanmer, Jerry of Sudbury and Ken (wife Rachel) of Oakville. ST. AGATHA and CARIBOU Lawrence Bosse, 81, died peacefully at his home after a long battle with cancer surrounded by his loving family on March 29, 2005. He was born April 19, 1923, in St. Agatha, the son of Deline (Chasse) and Joseph Bosse. He was educated in the St. Agatha schools. He took courses from Scranton Vocational in Pennsylvania, where he obtained his plumbing, oil burner and electrical licenses. He received many educational certificates during his working career. Lawrence married the love of his life, Hilda Ayotte, in 1942. In his early years, Lawrence worked for the Daughters of Wisdom in St. Agatha as well as in the woods of Northern Maine. He owned a plumbing and heating business for many years in Madawaska and continued that line of work long after the family moved to Caribou. For over 20 years, Lawrence served as the supervising foreman of the Plumbing and Heating Shop at Loring Air Force Base. He turned Funland Amusement Park in Caribou from a driving range to a wonderful place where families could spend hours of enjoyment. Many of his great inventions, such as a ball washer and a speed control on the go-carts, were used to facilitate many employee tasks. After retiring from this family-owned business, Lawrence and Hilda would travel to Florida during the winter months and summer in their hometown of St. Agatha. His carpentry, electrical and plumbing skills remodeled many homes and camps for his family. Combining his love of the outdoors and commitment to his work, Lawrence nourished beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, which many people enjoyed. His expertise and creativity was shown in many boats and cars he remodeled. He loved fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and riding his four-wheeler to berry pick with his many friends and family. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus and recently received recognition for 50 years of consecutive membership. Lawrence was a life time member of the St. Agatha Catholic Church. Lawrence will be missed by his many friends and family. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Deline Bosse; a daughter, Patricia; four brothers, Armand, Louis, Wallace and Valere; and a great-grandson, Nicolas. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Hilda; five sons, James of Caribou, Philip and Denise of Caribou, Larry and Linda of Marshfield, Ronald of Franklinton, N.C., Michael and Peggy of Caribou; three daughters, Cecile and Ellis Dechaine of Terryville, Conn., Jackie and special friend Dr. John Stewart of Caribou, Nancy and Jim Chandler of Presque Isle; 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Blanche Collin of Madawaska, Sister Martha of Ottawa, Canada, Theresa and Bob Bushway, Joan and David Olievera, all of Plainville, Conn., Jean and Conrad Cyr of St. David; and one brother, Herve and Corrine of Plainville, Conn. He will be sadly missed by special friends, Armand Chasse and Jean-Paul Bechard. Relatives and friends may call at Michaud's Funeral Home in St. Agatha from 9:00 to 10:00 am before the 11:00 am service on Friday, April 1, 2005, at the St. Agatha Catholic Church. Emelene was a remarkable woman whose greatest loves were her family and friends. She found joy in nature, sports, baking, gardening and crafts, particularly her pine needle weaving and bridge playing. A woman of strong faith, Emelene was a long-time member of St. Paul St. United Church, a CGIT leader and a member of the UCW. She taught for many years at Lingarden School for developme ntally challenged children and was an active member of the Dunlop Drive and Russell Avenue Seniors' Centres. The family gratefully thanks the staff of Centennial Gardens at Henley House for their wonderful care of Emelene and for their compassionate support of the family in her final days. We would also like to thank Dr. J. Luce for his attentive care of Emelene over the years. Mr. Douglas Austin Bassett December , 1942 - March 21, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Sands Funeral Chapel (Nanaimo) BASSETT, Douglas Austin, it is with great sadness that we announce the death of Douglas Austin Bassett, age 62, most recently of Gibson’s Landing, British Columbia and formerly of Montreal. Doug is predeceased by his parents Herb and Irene Bassett and will be mourned by his wife Carole; his children Jacques (Susan) and Bobbi (Dave); his brother Ted (Mona); their children Anita and Paul: his cherished mother-in-law Marion Keller; his brother-in-law Carmen Keller (Gail) and many more family, friends, colleagues and sailing buddies. Diagnosed with cancer two years ago, and expected to live only a few months more, Doug not only attended his retirement party at CSA a year later, but also participated in his “Wake” at Beaconsfield Yacht Club (for which he’d set aside funds the year before). No one had a better time at either party. Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Doug received his Masters Degree in Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon. He spent most of his early career at SED Systms Ltd, and moved on to join the Canadian Space Agency virtually at it’s inception. Doug was one of the handful of principals who guided Canada’s Space Station efforts over the years. He was the key leader in the effort to plan for the actual operational use of the Canadarm II. His contribution included not only developing procedures, but also the training of those on the ground who assist the astronauts on the Station, and coordination with Canada’s International Partners of the general operations of the Station. Later Doug led the planning and negotiation for building the Special Purpose Dextrous Manipulator, another major element of Canada’s Station program. Everyone who knew Doug knew how much he loved sailing, but what he was proudest of, was the special bonds he forged with his children Jacques and Bobbie Pelletier. Both of us will remain forever grateful for their love and devotion during these most difficult last two years – in which Doug (true to form) did not go gently into that good night” but fought “against the dying of the light.” For those who wish to: a donation in Doug’s name to the Sunshine Coast Hospice Society, Box 2698, Sechelt, BC, V0N 3A0 would be greatly appreciated.
