ARMSTRONG, Gary Gary passed from his Winchester home, to his Heavenly Home on January 31, 2005. This dear man began his life on May 1, 1938 in the Cardinal-Prescott area. Gary faced his failing health head on as he lived his life and was fully supported by his close knit family. Winchester was his home for more than 40 years with his wonderful family. He is survived by his devoted wife Freida Armstrong (nee Beckstead) and by his God-given gifts, his children Angie (Garry), Tony, Tammy (Mark) and Dave (Kelly). He is also survived by 2 more blessings, his gorgeous granddaughter Stacey-Lynne and his precious grandson Jordan. Gary is survived by a special sister Peg and his younger brother Roger. Gary will be fondly remembered by his cherished nieces, nephews, many in-laws and his extended family. Gary was predeceased by his parents Andrew Armstrong and the former Margaret Riddell, by 2 sisters Mary and Kay and by 2 brothers Clarke and Jack and by 2 angelic granddaughters Kaitlyn and Sarah Armstrong. Gary was a volunteer Fireman for Winchester for many years, was on the Recreation Board years earlier for a time, was a staunch supporter for the Winchester Hawks Jr.B. Hockey Club and was on the Executive for a term. After retiring for the LCBO in 1999 Gary did volunteer work for the WDMH for NOR-DUN seniors support Centre until his health no longer allowed him to. Gary was a member of the Golden Years Society who helped out at Euchre parties. Gary was a community minded guy, one who would go that extra mile to help someone. He will be sorely missed by people far and wide. So loved. The family will welcome relatives and friends at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, Church Street, Williamsburg on Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will take place at the Funeral Home on Thursday, February 3 at 2:30 p.m. Any donations to the Winchester Hospital, the Renew the Vision Fund or the Winchester United Church would be greatly appreciated by the family. BANHAM, Lorraine Ann (nee Zahab) Lorraine passed away on February 1, 2005. She travelled her path with grace, courage and humour. Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, Madeleine and Joseph, her brothers, Phil, Doug and Al, and her former husband, Hank Banham. She is survived by her daughters, Vivian and Susan (Brian), her beloved grandchildren, Bradley and Jordan, her sister, Suzanne, her brother, Larry (Laurel); and her partner Claude. Lorraine is also survived by her nieces and nephews who brought her great joy, as well as cousins and cherished friends. BENNETT, Alan Wells Retired Professional Engineer Formerly of Oakville, passed away peacefully in Ottawa, with family by his side on Monday, January 31, 2005. Predeceased by his wife Helen (nee Roberts) and by his brothers Jack and Max. Survived by his brothers Ron and Dave, his children Bonnie (George Donaldson) of Ottawa, Peter Bennett (Paulette) of Perth, Sally (Terry Daley) of Manotick, and Julia Bennett of Toronto. Loving grandfather to Jennifer and James Hughes, Posy Healey and Drew Bennett, Ryan, Sean and Lauren Daley, Katherine and Natalie Bennett Goss and great-grandfather to Bennett Panesar. Born in Cobourg, Ontario, Alan lived in Oakville with Helen for almost 60 years. He graduated from Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph and was an active member of the Alumni Association. Alan was Vice-President of Davison Chemical Co., an avid sailor, Past-Commodore of the Oakville Yacht Squadron and life member of the Halton Regional Conservation Authority. BUJOLD, Albert "Butch" It is with great sadness our family announces that after a valiant battle with cancer, while surrounded by his loving wife and family Butch passed away at the age of 56 at 2 a.m. January 30, 2005, at the Ottawa General Hospital. GRAY, Jane Bulley (Cox). It is with great sadness that we announce the death of a wonderful, courageous lady, Jane Gray on January 28, 2005 at the Montreal Neurological Institute. She died after a valiant life-long battle against spinal muscular atrophy. She lived eighty-four adventurous and fulfilling years and will be sorely missed by her sister Penelope Cox, her daughter Eileen and her son Robert. Eileen's family, husband Simon Santlal, daughters Sherilyn, Deborah and Shauna, son-in-law James Codjoe, grandson Julius Codjoe and Robert's family, wife Dorothy and daughters Shawna and Joleen. Predeceased by her husband Sidney E. Gray. She will be warmly remembered by all her family and friends for the way she touched their lives with her understanding, kindness, generosity, humour and spirit. BESSIE MAY LUCAS Lucas - Passed away at Ross Memorial Hospital, Lindsay, Ontario, Friday, January 28, 2005 at the age of 89 years. Bessie May (née Jones) was the wife of the late Andrew Lucas. She is survived by a son Brian (Loni) Lucas and two step-grandchildren, Ken and Kim of Kirkland Lake. She will be dearly remembered by her nephew Jim (Laurie) Johnson of Fenelon Falls, Ontario and their children - David (Diane), Patrick (Shelley) and Michael (Adrienne); her niece Joanne and her children, Cara, Emilie and Chad; and great grandnieces and nephews - Ryan and Ashley, Mathew and Jordan and Alyssa. Predeceased by her parents Effie (née Mitchell) and Thomas Jones and her twin sister Edith Johnson. Bessie was a registered nurse and instructor of nursing at London, Kingston, Port Arthur and North Bay. She retired from her profession in 1973. She loved music and played the violin in London, Kingston and North Bay Symphony Orchestra for several years. She also enjoyed water colour painting, ceramics, porcelain, playing golf and bridge. Bessie was a member of the Corpus Christi Church Catholic Women’s League and Canadian Club. Family and friends may pay their respects at McGuinty Funeral Home Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Betty was born on August 21, 1929 in Scotland and moved to Timmins over 50 years ago where she met and married her husband John and together they raised their family. She also worked for many years as a clerk in the sports department at Canadian Tire until 1986. Betty was an active member of the Legion Branch 88 women‚s auxiliary as well as the Schumacher Pioneer Club. Death notice for the late Olga Asselstine Peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on January 31, 2005 at the Sensenbrenner Hospital in Kapuskasing at the age of 85. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Albert Asselstine, her parents, Augusta and Wilhelm Chernsky, three sisters, Carrie, Julia and Alma, two brothers, Edward and Robert. She is survived by her son, Wayne Therrien (Rainette) of Kenora, step-son, Reid Asselstine (Mary) of Orillia, step-daughter, Penny Asselstine of Vancouver, as well as three grandchildren, Rick Asselstine, Tricia Therrien and Jason Therrien, one great granddaughter, Jessica Therrien. At Olga’s request, there will be no memorial service. Cremation has taken place and her ashes will be interred along side her parents in Inglis, Manitoba.

BIBBY, Robert In loving memory of Robert Bibby, 84 years who passed away Sunday morning January 30th, 2005 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - Laurentian Site. Beloved husband of Elsie (Sankson) Bibby of Sudbury. Loving father of Raymond (wife Joyce) of Summerland, BC, Martin (wife Anne) and Dean both of Sudbury. Cherished grandfather of Ashley. Averil and Margaret. Dear son of Peter and Emily Bibby both predeceased. Survived by brothers Bill and Peter both of England. Sadly missed by family in England. Robert was the youngest of 12, 9 brothers and 2 sisters. He worked as a welder in Barrow-In-Furnace Shipyards, emmigrating to Canada in 1957, his family following three months later. Robert worked very hard to provide and was always generous with others. He served the Lord he loved in many ways, giving of himself. Recently he and Elsie were honoured by the Sudbury Jail for 30 years of dedicated service in ministering to the inmates. Robert will be greatly missed, but do not be sad, for he is at home, celebrating. The family wish to thank the nurses on 8th Floor Laurentian Site, Dr. Cameron, Judy, Dr. Prince and Dr. Mecci for their kindness and compassion. PHARAND, Gédéon "Ged" The family announces with sorrow his death Saturday January 29, 2005 in Sudbury, at the age of 89 years. Son of the late Moïse and of the late Dovina (née Henri) Pharand. Husband of the late Madeleine (née Charbonneau) Pharand predeceased in 1968. Loving father of Laurier (Diane) of Hanmer and Bruno (Rachel) of Chelmsford. Dear brother of Simone Beaulne (late Phillip), Omer Pharand (Mildred), Léo Pharand (Lucille) and Rita Portelance (late Lucien) all of Sudbury. Predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Fovita Pharand, Marie-Jeanne Bodson (late René), Germain Pharand (Irène of London) and Maurice Pharand (Yvette of Sudbury). Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Marc, Michelle, Serge, Lise, Eric and by his great grandchildren, Neve, Jacob and Alex. Lovingly remembered by his special friend Rhéa Keegan of Sudbury and her family who knew him as "Papa Ged". He was a devoted family man and will be missed by all who knew him. After retiring from INCO in 1973, Ged enjoyed card playing with family and friends. He was an avid sports fan and loved watching hockey and harness racing. The family expresses its appreciation to Dr. Maki and staff and to the Sudbury Regional Hospital (Laurentian Site) 8th floor staff for the kind and compassionate care given to Gédéon during his illness. Gerard H. Barrois, Jr., age 93, died peacefully at home on Sunday, January 30, 2005. Mr. Barrois was a lifelong resident of Naomi, LA. He was a Freeport Sulphur Company retiree, and member and past- master of both Triumph Lodge No. 422 F&AM and Belle Chasse Lodge No. 469 F&AM. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerard Sr. and Euphrasie Becnel; his loving wife of 53 years, Marguerite Bayhi; brother, Cedric; and sister, Vivian Konek. Gerard is survived by his son, Melvin John; daughter-in- law, Neila; and another son; sister, Geraldine Landry; four grandchildren: M.J., Monica, Monique and Theresa; and four great- grandchildren. Claire (Campbell) Marceau, 90, of West Hartford, died peacefully on Monday (January 31, 2005) at St. Mary Home, West Hartford. She was the beloved wife of Harvey Marceau, who predeceased her in 1993. Claire was born March 20, 1914 in Swanton, VT and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Hortense (Rocheleau) Campbell. She was an active member of St. Peter Claver Church in West Hartford and worked in retail for many years at Land of Fashion, Gilman's, and Maggie's in the West Hartford Center. She is survived by her daughter, Cherie Marceau of Middletown; her son, Alan Marceau and his close friend, Diana Coleman, of West Hartford; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers, Ulysse and Alcee, and her sisters, Reine and Jeanne. The family expresses gratitude for the loving care to the dedicated staff of the Fitzgerald Unit at St. Mary Home. TROY NY -- John J. Cardinal, 82, of Troy, entered into eternal rest on Monday, January 31, 2005 at Samaritan Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Gillick Cardinal. John had been employed with the Ford Motor Company in Green Island for 27 years before retiring in 1987. He was a member of and the financial secretary/treasurer of the United Auto Workers Local 930. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater in the Battle of the Bulge and Normandy, Ardennes, Northern France and Rhineland. During his service, he received the European African Middle Eastern Medal. Survivors include his brother, Joseph Cardinal of Fla., Richard (Patricia Berrigan) Cardinal of Queensbury; and his lifetime sweet heart, the late Dorothy (Dottie) Jacobs; brother of the late Mary (Mae) Marcoux, Robert J. and Thomas J. Cardinal. John had very special grandchildren, Jessie and Robert Jacobs, and Jason Jacobs and his wife Terri; great-grandfather of Paige, Hannah and Brittany Jacobs. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral for John will be held Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. from the Wm. Couture, 72, of Middle Street died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at his home.He was born in St. Maurice, Quebec, on March 14, 1932, the son of Alfred and Yvonne (Hout) Couture.He moved to Augusta at the age of 5 and attended Farrington School. He later joined the Air Force and served as Airman 3rd Class in the Korean War. NEW BEDFORD -- Leo Henry Desrosiers, 80, of New Bedford died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long courageous battle with Alzheimers disease. He was the husband of Loraine (Tremblay) Desrosiers. They were married 55 years. Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Aldege and Alice (Gamache) Desrosiers. He was a lifelong resident of New Bedford, and a graduate of New Bedford High School, class of 1942. Mr. Desrosiers was a World War II Army veteran and held the rank of sergeant He was highly decorated and was the recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, having fought in the battles of Rome, Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was formerly employed by the National Association of Letter Carriers for 31 years in the New Bedford branch until retiring in 1984. He played semi-pro baseball, center field position, for the Madeirense Club. He was a member of the Post One American Legion for over 50 years, and also belonged to the Royal Travellers. He was a longtime communicant of St. Mary Church in New Bedford, Later in life he began running and ran many local races for over 20 years. In his leisure time, he enjoyed baseball, jogging, travel and being with his family and friends. Survivors include his widow; three sons, Donald A. Desrosiers, and his wife, Debra, Robert D. "Bobby" Desrosiers, and his wife, Adelina-Leite, both of New Bedford, and Roger L. Desrosiers, and his wife, Stephanie, of Dartmouth; two daughters, Annette Rose and Pauline Desrosiers, both of New Bedford; five grandchildren; four brothers, Albert, Gerard and Aldege Desrosiers, all of New Bedford, and Eugene Desrosiers of Florida; three sisters, Irene Girouard of New Bedford, Alice Fiano of Florida and Yvette Cote of Middleboro; and many nieces and nephews. His funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary Church. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd.

Demetry T. Durant , Norfolk -- Demetry T. Durant, 80, of John Knox Towers, departed this life Jan. 31, 2005. Born in Norfolk, she was educated in Norfolk public schools and received a bachelor of science degree from Hampton University in elementary education and a master's degree from the University of Virginia. She was a teacher with the Norfolk Public School system for 20 years and an education specialist for 22 years. She received numerous educational awards throughout her career. She was an AKA affiliate and frequently attended Calvary Revival Church. She is survived by her husband, James E. Durant Sr. of Norfolk; two daughters, Barbara T. Woodhouse (Richard A.) of Chesapeake and Janice D. Holt of Portsmouth; two sons, James E. Durant Jr. (Celestine) of Alexandria, Va., and Derrick A. Brown (Angela) of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a host of relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. Interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park. LEOMINSTER -- Ronald Arthur Fagnant, 69, of 700 Pacific St., formerly of Chicopee, Medway and Townsend, died Monday, Feb. 1, in his home. He was born on Jan. 20, 1936, in the Aldenville section of Chicopee, the son of the late Armand J. and Sadie (Hough) Fagnant. Mr. Fagnant served in the United States Army from 1955 until 1957 earning the Good Conduct Medal. After his service in the Army, Mr. Fagnant held various positions in the automotive field. He also owned his own auto parts business in Hopkinton for several years. After his retirement from the automotive field, Mr. Fagnant worked with his son for seven years. He was an active member of Our Lady of the Lake Church, taking part in the Church’s numerous ministries and the Men’s Fellowship Group. Mr. Fagnant was an on-call firefighter in Townsend in the early 1960’s for several years. A selfless man, he put all others above himself. His family affectionately awarded him the “Greatest Pepere in the World” title. He enjoyed fishing and reading and was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. Mr. Fagnant leaves his wife, Germaine C. (Daignault) Fagnant, with whom he would have celebrated their 48th anniversary on July 4th; three sons, David E. Fagnant and his wife, Barbara, of Scarborough, Maine, Thomas A. Fagnant and his partner, Ruth Dubey, of Tyngsboro, and Gerard A. Fagnant and his wife, Renee, of Westminster; three daughters, Marie C. Lucey and her husband, Michael, of Reading, Susan T. Fagnant-Patry and her partner, Laurie LaDuke, of Northbridge, and Deborah A. Cockerville and her husband, John F., of Mont Vernon, N.H.; one brother, Kenneth Fagnant and his wife, Mary, of Spofford, N.H.; two sisters, Patricia Carrier and her husband, Victor, of Aldenville, and Constance Hadley and her husband, John, of Hendersonville, NC; 16 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
