SOUTH PORTLAND - Eugene L. Gendron Jr., 82, longtime resident and former Mayor of South Portland formerly of Arlington, Mass., died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005 at Maine Medical Center in Portland following a long illness.He was born Nov. 4, 1922 in Winchester, Mass., a son of Eugene L. Sr. and Nora (Corr) Gendron. He graduated from Medford High School with the Class of 1941. Mr. Gendron attended Harvard University and also received insurance training in Wisconsin.He served in the US Navy from January of 1943 thru October of 1945 and was present for the invasion of South France. He also served in Italy and North Africa.Mr. Gendron worked for many years at Peerless Insurance Company and had served as Resident Vice President until his retirement in December of 1984.He was an active member of the South Portland community and had served on the City Council and had served two terms as Mayor of the city from 1972-1978. During his term as Mayor, the city of South Portland was named an All-American City. As a city councilor Mr. Gendron initiated and spearheaded the construction of Hinckley Park on Highland Avenue.Mr. Gendron served under appointment of the Governor of Maine on the Board of the Council of Natural Resources and the Board of Environmental Protection. He was a past President and present board member of the Citizen's Association of Liberty Lakes and was a member of the Maine Track Club. He was an active member of Hiram Lodge #180, the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 832, American Legion, Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portland, Former President and board member of the Visiting Nurse Association and was also a board member of the Portland Housing Authority. During his time in Arlington, Mass., he volunteered as a scout master for the local Boy Scout Troop #306 and was also instrumental in helping his son achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.He was an active longtime member and former deacon of the Central Square Baptist Church of Portland. He also enjoyed volunteering his free time in various capacities including in the Child Life Program at Maine Medical Center as well as being a grandparent volunteer at the Dyer School in South Portland.He enjoyed running and was also a collector of HO scale model trains.Mr. Gendron will be remembered by many for being very environmentally conscious.He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara (Wheaton) Gendron of South Portland, a son Mark E. and his wife Susan Gendron of Raymond, ME a daughter, Marcia E. Gendron of South Portland, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford Street, Portland. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Central Square Baptist Church, 466 Stevens Avenue Portland with Reverend Daryl Lavway officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Brooklawn Memorial Park Portland. --- SOUTH PORTLAND - Eugene L. Gendron Jr., a former chairman of the South Portland City Council who was passionate about the environment and instrumental in establishing Hinckley Park, died Monday. He was 82. Mr. Gendron served on the council from 1970 to 1976. Twice, he was elected chairman. He fought to keep property taxes low, established new zoning and worked to improve communication and methods of operation in city government.Mr. Gendron was instrumental in seeking federal grant money to buy the land off Highland Avenue that became Hinckley Park. The park was his dream and a highlight of his career in public service, said his wife, Barbara Gendron. "He made sure the park would be forever wild," his wife said. "It was beautiful. He was such a fine Christian gentleman. He worked for everyone but himself. That was just how he lived."A native of Massachusetts, Mr. Gendron moved to South Portland with his wife in the mid-1960s. He was a board member of the Portland Housing Authority and enjoyed volunteering for the Child Life Program at Maine Medical Center and as a grandparent volunteer at the Dyer School in South Portland.Mr. Gendron was a manager for Peerless Insurance Co., which handled property and casualty insurance, retiring in 1984 as vice president. He enjoyed his work, but his true love was the outdoors, in which he and his wife shared an interest.Mr. Gendron served on the state Board of Environmental Protection and was a director of the Natural Resources Council of Maine. He was a passionate environmentalist who fought to preserve open space and protect Maine's natural resources. He was an active member of the citizen-based Save Our Environment Committee and led an effort to halt plans for an oil refinery."He considered Maine a real gem and he wanted to keep it that way," his wife said. "He appreciated the little things. He loved the outdoors. He was a jogger. He loved to be out on the beach or walking in the woods." The Gendrons were married for 54 years and had two children and six grandchildren. "Not only was he a perfect husband, but he was my best friend. I'll miss his presence. He was always a joy to be around," his wife said. Mr. Gendron was deacon and treasurer of Central Square Baptist Church. The Rev. Daryl Lavway recalled their ritual at the conclusion of Sunday service. "He shook my hand and said, 'Good morning my friend,' " Lavway said. They were longtime friends who ran, canoed and shared an interest in theology."He was a gem of a human being," Lavway said.

GREGOIRE, Gary "Rock" Joseph Arthur "Retired Police Officer, Metropolitan Toronto Police Services". Peacefully, surrounded by his family, Friday, January 28, 2005 at the Toronto Western Hospital in his 52nd year. Beloved son of Ernest and Viola Grégoire of Sudbury. Loving father of Angela and Scott of Ajax, Ontario. Dear brother of Ernest Jr. (wife Sylvie) and Muriel Anderson both of Sudbury, Donna (husband Douglas) Shuart of Hanmer, Debra (husband Jerry) Bonneville of St. Catharines and Michael (wife Margaret) of Wanup. Lovingly remembered by several nieces, nephews and by his best friends Bernie Babin, Mike Moffat and Dave Richards. Gary was born, raised and educated in Sudbury. He commenced his police career at 55 Division, Toronto with Metropolitan Toronto Police Services, thence moved to 52 Division where he has spent the past 23 years before taking leave due to ill health, retiring December 31st, 2004. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting with friends and family. He looked forward to retirement back in the north country. Those that were very close to Gary "Rock", will miss his strength of character, loyalty to family and friends, his gentleness, his quick wit, his sense of humour, thoughtfulness and kindness. Albert Snifeld Peacefully with his family by his side, Albert Snifeld passed away Friday, January 28, 2005 at the Selkirk General Hospital at the age of 76. Albert was predeceased by his beloved wife of 48 years June Kristine Snifeld on October 2, 2000. His infant daughter Joanne. His parents Tryggvi and Runa Snifeld. Sister Lillian and brother-in-law Freeman Brandson. Father-in-law Kris and Mother-in-law Anna. Albert (Dad and Afi) will be sadly missed by his four children: Diane (Alf), David (Rosanne), Larry (Leanne) and Janis (Mike), Grandchildren: Terry, Darlene, Sherry, Kertis, Michelle, Erika, Kyle and Katie. Great-Grandchildren: Jesse, Tanner, Kristine, Holy, Amber, Johnathan, Jeanine and Trinity. Albert is survived by his sister Sigurros (Joe) their children Brian, Cheryl, Leslie and Ingrid and families. Nieces Donna and Catherine and their families. Albert was born on February 24, 1928 in Hnausa, Manitoba. He married June in 1952. In 1960 Albert became employed with Manitoba Hydro and moved to East Selkirk to raise his family. He was a loyal employee with Manitoba Hydro until his retirement. Albert will be remembered for his kindness and sense of humour and the way he looked at life. He enjoyed meeting new people and liked everyone he met. He has made lots of friends and touched many hearts through the years. All who loved him will miss his positive outlook on life and his gift of knowledge. The love he showed his family will be forever in our hearts and forever missed. “The Quality of a man’s life is measured by how deeply he has touched the life of others.” May we always remember and cherish, long after the sorrow and tears, the great man he was and the life that he lived-his gift to us that will last through the years. DEUTSCH-RENNER, Karl. 1917-2005. Died peacefully, early on January 26, at the Elizabeth Bruyere Hospital in Ottawa. He was predeceased by his parents Hans and Leopoldine Deutsch-Renner and by his elder brother Hans. Left to mourn the passing of this very special man, are his wife and life long friend Juliet Harrison-Renner and his dear sister Frances Ashley of San Francisco, two nieces and two nephews and uncounted number of friends, all of whom knew different aspects of his long life. We all remember him with a smile and a lift of the heart. Sorely missed by longtime friends Katherine Babbitt, Margaret Romans, Herbert Fischer-Colbri of Vienna, Beata Thau, Norman Auclair and by members of the Fisher Family of Montreal, who regarded him as an honorary member. Born in Vienna, died in Ottawa, his ashes will be returned to Vienna to be interred with those of his parents. There was no visitation and no service by his choice. Nevertheless, Rest in Peace Karl. LEICESTER— Charles N. Benoit, 52 of 676 Stafford Street in the Rochdale section of Leicester, died Tuesday Feb. 1 in his home after a long illness. His wife Eileen (Rogers) Benoit died in 1998. He leaves his mother Yvonne (Dalbec) Benoit of Cherry Valley, a brother and sister-in-law Daniel and Betsey Benoit of Cherry Valley and a nephew Francis Benoit of Cherry Valley, uncles, aunts and cousins. Mr. Benoit was born in Worcester son of the late Normand Benoit. He graduated from Leicester High School in 1971. He worked many years at WPI as a licensed steam fireman, retiring due to illness. He previously worked at Worcester Spinning and Finishing in Cherry Valley. He was a volunteer firefighter at Station 2, Cherry Valley, worked on the Civil Defense and Rescue, and the Leicester Ambulance Service. He was an avid animal lover and enjoyed playing accordian for a number of years. A funeral service will be held at 7:00 PM Wednesday, Feb. 2 in MORRISON-MORIN FUNERAL HOME, 1131 Main St., Leicester. GAYLE KENNETH BROUSSARD (G.K.) passed onto his final reward on January 28, 2005, at the age of 81. He arrived into this world in Beaumont, TX and lived there until he received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Upon receiving his commission as a 1st Lt. in the Marine Corps. he served for 8 years in the Pacific region. When he became a civilian, he chose a career as a sales engineer in the petrochemical industry. He easily made many friends and acquaintances. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 27 years, Grace; daughters Michelle, Debbie and Laura; son, Mike; grandchildren Tyler, Lauren, Carolina, Chase, Dawson, Linea, Madelyn, and Joseph. HOLYOKE - Sister Yvette Dumas, 87, (Sr. Marie Alphonse) beloved member of the Sisters of St. Joseph for 72 years, died on February 1, 2005 in Mont Marie Health Care Center, Holyoke, MA. Born in Fall River, MA, she was the daughter of the late Alphonse and Eveline (Pelletier) Dumas. Sister entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Fall River, MA from Blessed Sacrament Parish, Fall River. Her early education was at Blessed Sacrament School and was graduated from Novitiate High School and Sacred Heart College, Fall River, MA. She became a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield when the two communities merged in 1974. Among Sister's teaching assignments were the following schools: St. Michael, Ocean Grove, Blessed Sacrament, St. Roch, and St. Matthew, Fall River, St. Joseph and St. Therese, New Bedford, and St. Louis in Swansea. Sister also served as Principal of St. Jean Baptiste School in Fall River. In 1986 she joined the Retirement Community in Fall River and in 1996 became a resident of Mont Marie Health Care Center. In addition to her Sisters in community, Sister is survived by several nieces and nephews of the Brault, Beland, and Dumas families. The wake will take place at Mont Marie, Holyoke, MA on Thursday, February 3, from 2 to 4:30 with a Prayer Service at 3 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be in Mont Marie Chapel at 5 p.m. Burial will follow in Mont Marie Cemetery. TROY, NY -- Leo J. Bouchard, 78, formerly of Stow Avenue, entered into eternal rest on Monday, January 31, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Leo H. and Margaret Morgan Bouchard and husband of the late Patricia H. Hepp Bouchard. Leo was a lifelong resident of the Troy area and had been employed as an ID specialist by the Troy Police Department. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Leo also initiated the photography program at the Junior College of Albany and was a member of the NYS Professional Photographer's Association. Leo is survived by his children, Judith L. Bouchard of Albany, Ellen (Louis) Caruso of Waterford, Valerie (Kenneth) Brooks of Waterford, and Leo P. Bouchard of Wynantskill. He is the brother of Marjorie M. Bouchard of Wynantskill. WORCESTER— George Breault, 89, of 104 Randolph Rd., passed away Sunday, January 30th in the Odd Fellows Home after an illness. His wife, Savina (Wasiuk) Breault, passed away in April of 1998. He survived by two daughters, Sandra and her husband, Patrick Thompson of Springfield, and Sherry and her husband, Gerald Demars of North Grafton; a sister, Ruth Gardner of Leicester, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. A brother, Ralph and a sister, Loretta Breault, pre deceased him. Born in Thompson, CT he was a son of George E. and Annie (Gill) Breault, and has lived in Worcester most of his life. He once was a member of the Massachusetts National Guard. George worked more than 39 years for Norton Company before retiring. George was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, the Norton Retirees Association, the Striper Club, the Auburn Elks Club. He was an accomplished painter and fisherman. He produced several paintings and artwork. He also enjoyed photography and was a member of the Norton Camera Club. He also loved to Dance. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 2nd, at 11 am in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME and CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Burial will be in Saint John's Cemetery. A calling hour will be held Wednesday, February 2nd, from 10 to 11 am. in the funeral home. MEXICO - Clarence J. Buotte, 78, of Backkingdom Road, died Sunday at his home, following a long illness, with his family at his side.He was born in Mexico, on Jan. 23, 1927, a son of Thomas and Nina (Gaudet) Buotte. He was educated in Mexico Schools and was a graduate of Mexico High School, Class of 1947.He served in the United States Navy during World War II in England and Germany. Norbert Girard Caron, age 82, beloved husband of Therese Vanasse Caron of Milford, passed away on Monday, January 31, 2005, at West River Health Care, Milford. Son of the late Louis M. and Parmelie Charpentier Caron, he was born on December 22, 1922, in West Warwick, R.I., and was a longtime resident of Milford. Mr. Caron was a carpenter at the Habermann Builders Inc. and member of the Carpenters Union Local #24 for 50 years. He helped build St. Mary's School and Convent. He was a Boy Scout leader in Milford and a member of the Milford High School Father's Club, who helped build the concession stand. He enjoyed watching hockey and football. In addition to his wife, he leaves four sons, Michael A. Caron and his wife, Pat, of South Carolina, Ronald B. and his wife, Pamela, of Milford, Rene L. and his wife, Emma, of Ohio, and Wayne R. and his wife, Cindy, of New Hampshire; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Theresa Mailloux of West Warwick, R.I.; and several nieces and nephews. WEBSTER— Lucille E. Choiniere, 69, of 10 May St., died after congestive heart failure Monday, Jan 31 in Hubbard Regional Hospital. She leaves a brother Jean Paul Choiniere, a sister Madeleine Plasse both of Webster, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews. She loved animals and her dedicated companions: cat Ethel and dog Suzette. She was born and raised in Webster, the daughter of the late Louis and Avelina (Desjardin) Choiniere and lived here all her life. During the 50’s and 60’s she was the "Neighborhood Nanny" with one of the first structured daycares in Webster. She worked many years at the American Optical Co. in Southbridge, retiring in 1990. She was a life-long communicant of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Lucille enjoyed crocheting and knitting.
