DUFF, Eveline (nee Quinn). Passed away at Centre Henri Bradet in Montreal on January 28, 2005 in her ninety-second year. She was predeceased by her husband Gordon Griffith Duff and is survived by her sister Monica Ross (John), her three children Judy Mannion (Peter), Gracelynn Wilson (Ross), Gordon Duff (Patti Goodwin). She was a beloved grandmother to Erin (Peter), Andrew (Alice), Geoffery (Jenny), Melanie (Chris), Alicia, Brendan, Andrea (Jeff), Jason, Lauren and Cheryl, as well as five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Ev was a dedicated long time employee of Saguenay Shipping (Alcan) and will be missed by her family. LEWISTON - Mary Anne 'Marion' A. Roy, 99, of Jay, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005 at Montello Manor Nursing Home where she had resided for two years.She was born on July 26, 1905 in Chisholm, one of ten children born to Francois Xavier and Celestine Roy Fournier and was educated in the local schools. She and her siblings were born and raised on Mill Street.Marion worked at the Livermore Falls Glove Shop prior to her marriage to Alphonse J. 'Pete' Roy on July 15, 1928. As a full-time homemaker, she was devoted to caring for her family. Mr. Roy passed away on June 27, 1964 after 36 years of marriage. She later worked at Bass Shoe Company in Wilton.She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay and a member of the Daughters of Isabella and Ladies of Ste. Anne Society. She enjoyed cooking, reading, bowling and being with her grandchildren. She was always ready to go shopping and dining out with her friends. Guests were always welcome in her home where they enjoyed partaking of her excellent cooking. She always looked forward to family gatherings. She is survived by a son and his wife, Ronald and Montress Roy of Jay; a daughter, Mary Anne Trask of Saco; a brother, Arthur L. Fournier of Farmington; a sister-in-law, Loretta Pineau of Farmington; 10 grandchildren; 19 great- grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Roger Roy on Feb. 21, 1997; a son-in-law, Spencer Trask on Sept. 27, 1987; five sisters, Ida Muse, Irene Paquin, Alma Jolicoeur, Leonie Deshaies and Ora Griffin; three brothers, Albert E., Alfred and Ovila 'Pat' Fournier.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Saturday at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay. Raymond V. Carignan -- June 17, 1942 -- January 27, 2005 -- MOOSUP -- Raymond V. Carignan, 62, of 98 Whippoorwill Dr., died at home, Thursday morning after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Taftville on June 17, 1942 to the late Oliver and Marie Louise (Adam) Carignan.Raymond was last employed at Columbia Ford as a salesman. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #34 in Taftville, and an Army Veteran from the Vietnam War. Ray would like to be known for his love of golf, and that he was fortunate enough to run his own golf course in Brooklyn.Ray is survived by his companion Kathleen Poirier with whom he made his home, her son Thomas Poirier and his wife Tracy and loving granddaughters Tammy & Chelsea Poirier. He is also survived by three brothers; Richard & Louis Carignan both of Norwich and Victor Estelle of Groton Long Point, four sisters; Elizabeth Yeznach of Gales Ferry, Helen Chiangi, Irene Henk both of Norwich, and Louise Lamothe of Montville. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and many special friends. He was predeceased by three brothers; Andre, George and Leo Carignan.A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, February 12th at Sacred Heart Church in Taftville at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private. Octave "Tive" Dufrene, 85, a native and resident of Raceland, died at 11:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to funeral time Monday at St. Hilary of Poitiers Catholic Church. Mass will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church, with burial in St. Mary’s Natvity Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Breaux Dufrene; one son, O.J. Sister Margaret Alice DuJardin, OP, of Dominican Convent, Sparkill, New York, died on January 29, 2005 in Siena Hall Infirmary, Dominican Convent, 175 Route 340, Sparkill, NY. Born in the Bronx, NY, February 16, 1936, Marguerite DuJardin was the daughter of Gaston and Alice Robbins DuJardin. Marguerite entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1953, and became known as Sister Margaret Alice, professing her first vows in 1955 and final vows in 1960. Sister Margaret Alice studied at St. Louis University and took courses in food service management, which led to her ministry as food manager and chef at child care facilities, religious convents and rectories. Sister Margaret Alice worked from 1955-1960 at Siena Hall in Wilmington, DE; 1960-1972 at Cardinal McCloskey in White Plains, NY; 1972-1975 in Villa St. Dominici, Glasco, NY; 1975-1979 in Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY; 1993-2001 in St. Catherine of Siena Priory, Manhattan, NY; 2001-present she was a resident of the Sister's Infirmary in Dominican Convent, Sparkill. Sister Margaret Alice is survived by her sisters Grace Finn of New York and Mary Ryan (husband Paul) of Pennsylvania; nieces and nephews Paul, Kathryn, Eileen and Lt. Commander Matthew Boland; Jennifer and James McMahon; grandniece Zoe and grandnephew Aidan. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY, February 1, 2005 at 10:30am. WATERBORO - Loretta Flaherty, 74, of Hanna Drive, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005 at her residence. She was born in Portland on March 10, 1930, the daughter of Arthur and Viola Shaw Gallant. She attended Portland schools, and was a graduate of Cathedral High School. Loretta was employed for several years at Central Maine Power Co., until her children were born, when she became a full-time homemaker. Lydia was a longtime member of St. Jude's Church, the St. Ann's Society, and the Indian Orchard Golden Agers. She was predeceased by her first husband, Lawrence Tisdel, and her second husband, Malvern Chaffee. She leaves one son, Lawrence C. Tisdel and his wife, Ann of Largo, FL; 2 brothers, Armand Gregoire of Ludlow, and Albert Gregoire of Lakeland, FL; one sister, Bernadette Noonan of East Springfield; one granddaughter, Debra Mastrangelo and her husband, Ralph of East Longmeadow; and 2 great-grandchildren, Alyson and Christopher Mastrangelo. HALLOWELL -- Nora Annie Charpentier, 91, of Academy Street, and formerly of Winthrop Street, died on Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at her home, following a long illness. She was born in St. John on Aug. 29, 1913, a daughter of Alphonse and Elizabeth (Nadeau) Harvey.Mrs. Charpentier was a graduate of Fort Kent High School and Madawaska Teachers School. She had been employed by Hallowell Shoe Co. for 20 years. She had also worked as a school teacher and for Sarah Coventry for several years. Mrs. Charpentier was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was a Eucharistic minister and was a past master of the Hallowell Grange. She also was an honorary life member of the USAF Air Defense Team for "faithful service in the Ground Observer Corps." She was a wonderful cook who enjoyed cooking for all her neighbors.Mrs. Charpentier was predeceased by her husband, Henry "Hank" Charpentier; and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by a son, Gary Charpentier, retired from the U.S. Army, and his wife, Karen, of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Betty Charpentier, retired from the U.S. Air Force, of Indianapolis, Ind.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; many special friends too numerous to name; and a special nephew, Wayne Harvey and his wife, Shirley, of Farmingdale.At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. He was a graduate of Cathedral High School in Springfield and received an associate degree in engineering from Franklin Institute. For the past 31 years he had been a resident of Brockton. Before his retirement Mr. LaPierre had been a test engineer for 35 years at the Foxboro Company, now Invensys, in East Bridgewater and Foxboro. He had also been employed part time in the automotive department of Sears Department Store in Brockton. Mr. LaPierre had been a member of the Berwick Boys in West Bridgewater for many years and a member of the National Guard. He enjoyed working on cars and hanging with his friends at Christo’s on Friday nights. He was the loving father of Robert R. BRADEN, Lorne Noble WWII Veteran - North Africa and Italy Retired Air Force Retired City of Ottawa With his family by his side, Lorne passed away peacefully and with dignity on Friday, January 28, 2005 in his 82nd year. Lorne was predeceased by his first wife Gwen, of 42 years, whom he cared for the last 3 years of her life while she was suffering from ALS. He leaves behind his children, Nikki (Jacques Laflamme), Wendy (Bryan Sullivan), Laurie (Dianne St. Germain), Leanne (Don Klein) and his 2nd wife Lucille Rousselle. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Marc, Jonathan, Kristy, Ryan, Kyle, Sarah, Jennifer and Geoffrey. Lorne served in the army during the 2nd World War and continued after the war to serve his country for 25 years in the Air Force. After retiring from the service, he worked for the City of Ottawa as a heavy equipment mechanic at Bayview Yard. The family would like to thank the staff of the 5th floor, Oncology at the General Hospital and staff of the 5th floor, Palliative Care Unit at the Elisabeth Bruyere Health Centre for the care and compassion they had for Lorne. Mrs. Maxine Petzel (née Slomke) May 08, 1928 - January 28, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Jenkens Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre It is with great sadness, but relief for our mother, that we announce the passing of Maxine Petzel at home on Friday January 28th, 2005 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. She was the former Maxine Marion, daughter of Fred and Annie Slomke. Born May 8, 1928 in the family home on Christina Street. She was married in 1947 to Lawrence H. Petzel who predeceased her in 1972. After ten years of being a widow she married Allan W. Petzel, who predeceased her in 1990. For many years Maxine was a dinning room hostess at the former Royal Edward Hotel. After leaving the Royal Edward Maxine worked for 25 years, until her retirement at the Circle Inn. After family and friends, Max’s greatest love was curling. She was a member of the Fort William Ladies Curling Club for the past 56 years, and had served as president for two terms. Maxine and Allan enjoyed many years together at Ryan’s Lodge at Arrow Lake. She will always be remembered for her tremendous sense of humour, dimpled smile and zest for life. She is survived by sons William (Sandra) and Allan (Melody) and daughter Joanne with whom she resided. Maxine is also survived by her sister Marjorie Harris (Victoria B.C.) brother John Slomke (Victoria B.C.) as well as her beloved granddaughters Megan (Jamie) and Lauren, treasured great granddaughters Grace and Emily and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews in Thunder Bay, Saskatchewan, B.C. and California. She was predeceased by her parents and by her brother Murray Slomke. Funeral services for Mrs. Maxine Petzel will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday February 1, 2005 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. POESTENKILL-- Joseph F. Talbot Jr., a longtime resident of Poestenkill, husband of Shirley Robillard Talbot, died Friday, January 28, 2005 at his residence. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Joseph F. Talbot Sr. and Anna Byer Talbot. He was a graduate of St. Michael's School in Troy, Catholic Central High School and Siena College, Class of 1950. He spent his professional life as a teacher at St. Jude the Apostle School, Wynantskill for five years and in the Troy City School District for 27 years, teaching at School 10, School 15 and retiring in 1988 from School 16. Mr. Talbot was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater on board the USS Vandenburgh as a radioman third class. He was a special friend to 4-H. Survivors in addition to his wife include his six children, Janice (Mrs. John) Yager of Wynantskill, Elfreda A. Laranjo of Troy, Matthew J. (Colleen) Talbot of Poestenkill, Judith A. Gabriel of Watervliet, Ltc. Margaret (Paul) Bedard, USA of Atlanta, Ga. and Mary (Richard) Rekus of Laurel, Md. and a brother, Thomas P. (Phyllis) Talbot of Voorheesville. He is predeceased by a sister, Mary Peer and four brothers, Patrick, John, James and Michael Talbot. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild expected in February. The funeral will be from the Thomas S. Connolly Funeral Home, 294 Whiteview Rd., Wynantskill on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. and at 10 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, North Greenbush where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery in Schuylerville. Cora (Bouley) Sopelak, 90, devoted wife of the late Andrew Sopelak, formerly of Bushnell Street of Hartford and recently a nine year resident of the Governor's House in Simsbury, passed into the hands of our Lord Saturday, (January 29, 2005). Cora was born in Holyoke, MA on February 28, 1914, daughter of the late Ora (St. John) and Ovila Bouley. She left school at an early age to help care for her loving brothers and sisters. She worked and sacrificed all her life with the goal of giving her own children the opportunity to attend college. Cora often put others before herself and never asked for anything in return. Her counsel was often sought by her many friends and family. She will be remembered for her willingness to listen, understand, and show compassion. Cora was an enthusiastic walker, and often walked more than five miles a day. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Her unique hand knitted soled slippers were a common request of family and friends. Cora was employed at Underwood Typewriter Co. and Royal Typewriter Co. She mastered the art of key letter alignment and became an instructor and mentor to others at Royal Typewriter. Cora was an active member of the Barry Square Senior Center, the South End Senior Center, and a devoted member of St. Augustine's Church of Hartford. Cora leaves behind two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Sophie Sopelak of Avon and Kenneth and Janet Sopelak of Simsbury; her brother, Leo "Corky" Bouley and his wife, Mary; her sisters, Lydia Keegan, Aldea Klotz and her husband, Stanley, Dora Golembrieski, Theresa Coughlin and Jeanette Gaudory. She also leaves two grandchildren, Stephen and his wife, Megan Sopelak of Farmington, Carolyn and her husband, Martin Burns of Eldersburg, MD; and four great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Kyle Sopelak and Sean and Daniel Burns. She also leaves many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters and her brothers, Leah Rudolph, Gloria McClucas, Mary Rose Cashman, Claire Pych, Charles and Ovila Bouley Jr. The family is grateful to the staff of the Governor's House and especially the late Helen and Stanley Sopelak for the excellent care they provided. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 1, at 9:15 a.m. from the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Augustine's Church, Hartford. Major Joseph Gervais, U.S. Air Force retired, passed away at home Jan. 26, 2005. Born May 19, 1924, in Tyngsboro, Mass., he is survived by his wife of 57 years, Thelma (Hamblen) Gervais; and his son, Jerry (Jane) of Arlington Heights, Ill. Other survivors are his brother, Albert of Tyngsboro; sisters, Doris McHugh of Putnam, Conn. and Florence Huot of Seabrook, N.H.; plus many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Douglas. He was a veteran of World War II, Korean and Vietnam Wars, serving as a highly decorated command pilot of B-24, B-29 and C-130 aircraft with over 16,000 hours of flight time. After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, he was employed by the Clark County School District in Pupil Personnel Services. A resident of Las Vegas for 43 years, the co-author of two books about the fate of aviatrix Amelia Earhart. He was greatly loved and admired. No services are planned.
