PODSTAWKA, Beverly - Peacefully at home with her loving family on December 31, 2004. Beloved wife of 53 years to Mike. Predeceased by her parents Joseph and Dora Hagger, her brother Kenneth and sister Diane. Cherished by her children Paul (Helena) of Blind River, Janice Johnson (Richard) of Truro, NS., Susan Hanna (Chad) of Aurora, Nancy Edwards (John) of Whitby, and David (Tiffanie) of Sudbury. Bev had a loving and special relationship with each of her grandchildren: Jeff (Jane), Bill and Matthew Johnson, Craig and Lauren Hanna, Laura and Michael Podstawka, Nicholas and Jack Podstawka and Leah Rose Edwards. Bev will be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews and fondly remembered by her dear friends. Bev was a valued member of her community and will be remembered by her contributions to CWL, Girl Guides of Canada, the Horticultural Society and the Hospital Auxiliary. Active in the CWL for over 25 years, she served in many capacities including a term as President. Her 12 years in Guiding were completed with a term as District commissioner, however her greatest joy came from her involvement with her Brownies. She will be forever missed within the community by the many lives she touched with her unique kindness and caring ways. ORANGE PARK, Fla. — Alfred L. Masse, 86, died Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 2004, after several years of failing health.He was the son of the late Albert and Marie Anne (Doyon) Masse of Somersworth, N.H. He was a resident of Jacksonville, Fla. for 50 years.He was raised in Somersworth and graduated from St. Martin Academy and Somersworth High School. He loved playing cards. He loved his summer vacations in New Hampshire.He retired in 1980 after 20 years of service at the Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, as a computer programmer. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.He is survived by his daughter, Judith Reyna and her husband, Juan; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bertha Dubois of Rochester, N.H., Rita Mercier and husband, Lucien, and Helen Croteau and husband, David; one brother, Martin Masse and wife, Rachel; a sister-in-law, Delia Carr and husband, Richard, of Somersworth; many nieces, nephews and cousins.He was predeceased by his wife, Madeline (Copp); his sisters, Blanche McFarline and Cecile Smart; and his brothers, Roger and Gerard.Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, in the chapel of the Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home, Orange Park, Fla., with the Rev. Elle laisse dans le deuil quatre filles: Majella (feu Edmond Duguay) et Anne-Marie (feu Jean Paulin), toutes deux de Petite-Lamèque, Dina (feu Conrad Noël) de Pointe-Alexandre et Germaine (Roger Chiasson) de Windsor, Ont.; quatre fils: Onile (Marie-Anna) de Pointe-Alexandre, François (Anne-Marie) de Saint-Jean, Joseph (Fabie) de Lamèque et Réjean (Carmelle) de la Résidence Bel-Accueil de Lamèque; deux soeurs: Agnes (feu Onile Chiasson) de Bathurst et Emerentienne (feu Joseph I. CAMPBELL, Eric Hugh Eric Hugh Campbell died peacefully on December 30, age 95, at Braeburn, his cherished family home for the past 45 years. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Phyllis May (Moodie) and is survived by his five children and their spouses (Christopher/Gay, Tony/Alison, John/Bridget, Nigel/Judy, Elizabeth/John) as well as by his much-loved 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He is remembered by a host of loving friends and especially Barbara Campbell and Isabel Mersel. A very proud Canadian, he was born in Valparaiso, Chile in 1909 of Scottish, Yorkshire and German ancestry. He deeply loved his native land and returned to it several times over the years while his schooling, career and choices for his young family took him to Dollar Academy near Edinburgh, Scotland; La Paz, Bolivia; Ottawa, Canada; San Salvador, El Salvador; and finally to Hudson Heights, Quebec. He considered himself fortunate to have had an opportunity to build an unequalled 70 year career in the Canadian and international public utility industry, starting with Bolivian Power Company/Montreal Engineering in 1935, followed by the Gatineau Power Company of Ottawa, and then the Canadian International Power Company of Montreal. CIP was an international public utility holding company in which he rose to be President and Director not only of it but also of several of its subsidiaries including the Monterey Railway, Light and Power Company, Mexico, Compania Alumbrado Electrico de San Salvador, Energia Electrica de Venezuela, and the Barbados Light and Power Company (of which he was chairman for 25 years, retiring at the age of 88 and continuing as an emeritus until his death). A funeral service and internment will be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday, January 15 at St James Church, 640 Main Road, Hudson Heights, Quebec followed by a reception for friends and family in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Victorian Order of Nurses would be particularly appreciated (VON, 98 Cameron Avenue, Hudson, QC, J0P 1H0). Stewart Cook, 83 CARDINAL -- Stewart McDermott Cook, 83, retired Casco employee and former municipal politician, died November 22 after a brief illness. He was born August 30, 1921 in the hamlet of Irena, near Iroquois, to William Cook and the former Cybil McDermott. He was the third youngest of seven brothers. When he was a young boy, his family moved to the Cardinal area, where he lived the rest of his life. He married Mary Montgomery, of Spencerville, in November 1944 and they had two children. Mr. Cook started out working with his father in farming. In 1947 he left and went into construction and for three years travelled throughout Ontario working on various jobs. In 1950 he started working at the Canada Starch Company in Cardinal. His 33-year career there was varied. He began as a millwright and eventually became master mechanic, a position he referred to as "the move upstairs" and which he held until his retirement. He approached his job as he did his life, with interest and enthusiasm. He was proud of his accomplishments and his involvement in projects such as the building of plants in Port Colbourne and Winston Salem. Mr. Cook was also very interested in politics, especially at the municipal level. His political career began in 1957 when he was first elected a councillor. Over the next 20 years he was deputy reeve, reeve and finally warden of the counties council of Leeds and Grenville. Other interests and hobbies included working with and racing horses when he was young, curling, golfing and playing cards. He was always looking for a good game of euchre at the Royal Canadian Legion branch in Cardinal. He is survived by his son Sheldon and wife Sandra (nee Somerville) and daughter Trudy Watson and husband Donald, as well as four grandchildren, William and Matthew Cook, Cheryl McIntosh (nee Watson) and husband Lance, and Kimberly Watson, and one great-grandson, Landon McIntosh. He was predeceased by his wife Mary in January 2000 and by his six brothers. Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, where on November 24 the funeral was held, with Rev. Doug Carnegie officiating and grandchildren Cheryl McIntosh and William Cook giving eulogies. Burial was at the Riverside Cemetery, in Cardinal. The pallbearers were William, Matthew, Dale and Richard Cook, Lance McIntosh and Ed Murphy. Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and other charities. Ruth taught for over 40 years, was the Vice Principal of Borden High School and received numerous international awards. She was a member of the Canadian Teachers Federation and also of the Federation of Women Teachers Association of Ontario and she was an honorary member of the Council on Aging. RITCHIE, MARY C. The death of Mrs. Mary C. Ritchie, formerly of Manners Sutton Road, Millidgeville, occurred at the Dr. Snow Nursing Home, Hampton, NB, on January 1, 2005. Widow of the late Honourable Louis McC. Ritchie, Mrs. Ritchie was born in Saint John, a daughter of the late William and Ellen (Ryan) Hogan. At an early age, she moved with her family to Chatham, NB. Following graduation from High School, she attended St. Michael's Secretarial School. She then joined the parliamentary staff of the House of Commons in Ottawa, where she was secretary to George M. McDade, MP for Northumberland and, later, secretary to William M. Ryan, MP for Saint John - Albert. Following her marriage, she moved to Millidgeville where she resided until recently. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she is survived by three daughters: Mary Lou Cronin of Saint John, Judith Anne Ritchie of Montreal and Margot Russell (David) of Fredericton; six grandchildren: Cathy McDonah (Don), Nashua, NH, Geoffrey Cronin (Kym), Mississauga, ON, Mary Beth Cronin of Georgetown, ON and Moira Dodds (Dominic) of Mississagua, ON, Peter Russell (Melanie) of Pt. McNeill, BC and Kevin Russell (Erin) of Elmsdale, NS; two step-granddaughters, Karen Gilmour Barrett and Joan Gilmour Rosenberg, Toronto; ten great-grandchildren, Liam, Caitlin and Mollie McDonah, Madeline and Jared Dodds , Ainsley Cronin, Emma and Lauren Russell, Colin and Ryan Russell. In addition, Mrs. Ritchie is survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Mrs. Ritchie is also survived by her special friend, Muriel Morris of Chatham, NB. In addition to her husband, she was pre-deceased by two daughters, Eugenie and Margaret and three brothers, Jack, William and Arthur. Active in many clubs and organizations, Mrs. Ritchie was a strong supporter of the arts and cultural community, as well as the St. Vincent's Alumnae Association and the CWL. Many years ago Mrs. Ritchie was made an honourary member of the St. Vincent's Alumnae Association in recognition of her strong and constant support of that organization. Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., Saint John, with visiting on Monday from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Wednesday morning at 12:00 o'clock. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Attleboro -- ARTHUR J. DESCOTEAUX JR., 37, of Pearl Street, a retired retail salesman, died Friday in Sturdy Memorial Hospital after an illness.He was the companion of Ronald G. Soucy. Born in Hinesville, Ga., on June 14, 1967, a son of Arthur J. Descoteaux Sr. of Woonsocket and Linda A.M. (Ducas) Vespia of Providence, he had lived in Attleboro for five years, previously living in Providence.Mr. Descoteaux had been a salesman in the children's department of Filene's department store in Emerald Square mall, North Attleboro, for several years before retiring because of illness.He was a former communicant of St. Michael Church, Providence.Mr. Descoteaus loved music, traveling, going to the movies, and restoring cars.Besides his parents and companion, he leaves a son, Arthur J. Carter of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Michelle A. Descoteaux of Lewiston, Maine, and Dawn M. McGowan of Woonsocket; a stepsister, Nicole Dubois of Woonsocket; three half sisters, Angel Pugh in Florida, Tina Cookingham of East Providence and Stephanie Descoteaux of Woonsocket; his step-parents, Michelle Descoteaux and James A. GILFORD— Doris M. Landry, 79, of 125 Woodland Ave. died Dec. 31, 2004 in her residence. A lifelong resident of the area, she was born in Laconia on June 19, 1925, the daughter of Joseph J. and Georgianna (Dionne) Freo. She graduated from Laconia High School in 1944 and was employed as a payroll clerk for 35 years at Scott & Williams Company until its closure. Prior to her retirement in 1998, she was employed in the billing department of the New Hampshire State Hospital in Concord for 19 years.She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Lakes Church. Her husband, Wilfred J. Landry died in 1972.She was a noted animal lover and cared for a succession of stray cats.Family members include twin daughters, Georgianna T. English of Gilford and Emily Landry Drenberg of Tampa, Fla.; a son, John J. Landry of Lakeport; four grandchildren, Christopher Miles English of Methuen, Mass., Jay J. Landry of Manchester, Sarah Ellen Hargis of Tampa, Fla. and Jennifer Ellen McLeod of Laconia; two great grandchildren; a sister, Catherine Mary Phillips of Laconia; two brothers, Joseph E. WORCESTER— Warren E. Houle, 83, of 133 Lake Avenue North, died Sunday, January 2, in UMass Hospital. He leaves his wife of 59 years, Pricilla L. (Popham) Houle; three sons, Richard E. and his wife, Jeanne Houle of Auburn, Russell and his wife, MaryAnn Houle of Worcester, and Joseph Houle with whom he lived; six grandchildren, three great grandchildren. A son, William Houle, as well as a grandson, Michael Houle, pre-deceased him. He was born in Worcester the son of Ernest and Florence (Lajoie) Houle and has lived here all his life. He graduated from Saint Peter’s High School and from the Holy Cross College Labor Institute. Mr. Houle retired in 1985 from The University of Massachusetts Hospital and Medical School, where he worked in the E.B.S. Department. He previously worked for 40 years at Crompton and Knowles Loom Works. He was a member of Saint Margaret Mary Church, the Steelworkers Union Local 3274, and served in various capacities including President. He was a member of the C.O.P.E. retirees, the Massachusetts retired, state, county and municipal employees association, and the Worcester Labor Council. He was a long time member of the Worcester Democratic City Committee, and was presented the John F. Kennedy award as Democrat of The Year in 1992, the award was presented to him by Senator Edward Kennedy. He worked for many years for the Worcester Election Commission, and was Chairman of Ward 3. The funeral for Mr. Houle will be held Tuesday, January 4, from MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Saint Margaret Mary Church, 75 Alvarado Avenue, Worcester. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours will be held tonight, Monday, January 3, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the funeral home. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Post 26 of Jeanerette. He was working with the Council on Aging. LEWISTON - Charles C. Morin, 45, of Thorne Avenue in Lewiston, died at Central Maine Medical Center, Sunday, Jan. 2, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family after a courageous four-year battle with cancer."Chuck" was born in Lewiston on Sept. 25, 1959, the son of Charles and Helen Morin.He attended Holy Family grammer school, graduated from Lewiston High School with the Class of 1977 and earned his certification as a pipefitter at Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute.On Aug. 18, 1984, he married Joanne Pouzol and together settled down to raise a family.Chuck was employed by Cianbro Corporation and was a member of Local 783 Plumbers & Pipefitters Union.He was a member of Holy Family Parish. He enjoyed reading and was an instructor for the Lost Valley Handicapped Skiing Association.Charles, a very gentle and generous man, was his daughters' biggest fan and supported them in their sporting activities and every other pasttime that they were involved in. His compassion and kindness will be missed always.He is survived by his wife of 20 years; his daughters, Katie, Allison and Erica Morin of Lewiston; his mother, Helen Sylvain and husband, Albert, of Lewiston; sisters, Joline Silva and husband, Gerry, of North Andover, Mass., Anne Lajoie and husband, Peter, of Lewiston, and Nicki Mercier and husband, Michael, of Lewiston; brothers, Marc Morin and wife, Janet, of Lewiston, Paul Morin and wife, Michelle, of Topsham, and Thomas Morin of Lewiston; and several nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by his father, Charles R. Morin, in 1982.

Bernadette "Bernie" Raymond, 84, of Bourbonnais, died Friday (Dec. 31, 2004) at Provena Our Lady of Victory Nursing Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. George Catholic Church, where she was a member. Father Kenneth Yarno will officiate. Burial will be in St. George Cemetery. Mrs. Raymond was a homemaker. She also assisted her husband in the operation of their farm in St. George. She was born Feb. 11, 1920, in Manteno, the daughter of Charles and Deneiges Dandurand Rivard. Her parents are deceased. Her husband, Francis X. Raymond, whom she married Feb. 3, 1945, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Kankakee, died April 24, 2001. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Merle and June Raymond of Manteno; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and David White of Bourbonnais; four grandchildren, Jorie and Ray Schmidt of Manteno, Anita and Brent Webster of Woodstock, Ga., Kristin and Steve Cousins of Plainfield, Brad and Stacey White of Chebanse; and nine great-grandchildren. One sister and three brothers are deceased. Mrs. Raymond was a volunteer at the Exline Sportsman's Club. She was a member of the St. Anne Sodality at her church and enjoyed playing bridge.
