PERENACK, Don Michael, 1938-2004, With great sorrow, the family of Dr. Don Michael Perenack announces his passing at the Bethany Care Centre on Sunday, October 24, 2004 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's at the age of 66 years. Don was born on September 13, 1938 in Thorold, ON and raised in Welland, ON. Don met Pauline and married her in St. Catharines, ON in 1960, whereupon they moved to Omaha, NB where Don completed his dental studies, eventually returning to Canada. In Vancouver, he beg an his career of dentistry for the mentally and physically handicapped. Over the years, his expertise and devotion to his much-loved "special patients" gained him enormous respect among the dental communities in both Canada and the United States. Oft en called upon in his field of expertise, both students and professionals alike shared in his wealth of knowledge through lectures and scientific publications in dental journals, periodicals and texts. The ultimate aim of his career was striving to c reate a better understanding of the needs of his special people. He was a member of the American Dental Assocaition, as well as the local, provincial and national divisions of the Canadian Dental Association, and the World Health Organization. He als o contributed his energies to public service and community organizations. For all who knew him, he was afforded great respect for his love of people and his devotion to his family. Besides his loving wife Pauline of forty-four years, Don is survived by his children, Don and Jennifer of Calgary, Dr. Jon of New Orleans, LA, and Pauline Dawn of Fullerton, CA; his precious granddaughter Isis of Calgary, as well as a sister-in-law, Corine; nephews, John and Aaron of Welland, ON. He is also survived b y numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in Ontario. Don was predeceased by his father Michael, former Mayor of Welland, ON in 1996, his mother Helen (Marcov) in 1998, and his only brother Michael in 1988. BATTERSBY, Jane (nee Duncan); 1912-2004 Formerly of Niagara Falls, Ontario, lately residing at Waterloo Heights, joined her parents, Rev. Charles and Jennie Duncan, and her brother Art Duncan and sister-in-law, Florence Duncan in heaven on Saturday, October 23, 2004. A long time faithful choir member and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church, Niagara Falls. O'BRIEN, Kenneth Alfred - Mr. Ken O'Brien died peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, October 24, 2004 at North Bay General Hospital in his 59th year. Ken O'Brien, of Powassan and formerly of Sundridge, was the beloved husband of Jackie (Hollingshead) of Powassan and the loved father of Doreen (Mike Burke) of Edmonton, Jeremy (Brandie) of Bracebridge, Craig (Melanie) of Oshawa and Tresa of Barrie and friend Corey Lamarche of Ottawa. Ken was the dear son of Vera (Noll) and the late Alfred O'Brien (1989) and brother of Mervin (Barb) of Sundridge and Lawrence (Jean) of Prince George, British Columbia. Brother-in-law of Bruce Hollingshead (Bev) of North Bay and Larry Hollingshead of South River. He will be sadly missed by numerous nephews and nieces and dear friends, Charlie and Paul. Claude was a school bus driver for 23 years, a member of the Tidnish Bridge United Church and a member of the Baie Verte Senior Citizens Club. McGINNIS, RITA A. - With sadness we announce the death of Rita Agnes McGinnis at the Saint John Regional Hospital on October 26, 2004. She was born in Piccadilly Kings Co. NB, a daughter of the late Thomas and Teresa (O'Leary) Whalen and wife of the late Gerald J. McGinnis. She spent most of her life in Saint John, was a graduate of Modern Business College and had worked as a ward clerk at the Saint John Regional Hospital, retiring in 1987. She was a faithful member of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish. Rita was a loving mother of nine children; two sons; John (Beth) of Fredericton, NB and Tom of St. John's, NL; seven daughters; Mary (Don) Smith of Saint John, Paula (Pat) McDonough of Saint John, Carmel (Kevin McCabe) Halifax NS, Geraldine (Don) Newman, Eleanor, Christine (Pat) Kelly and Caroline (Mike Ryan) all of Saint John, NB. Born in Back Bay, NB on August 30, 1912, he was a son of the late Addison and Alice (Cook) Leavitt. A loving father and grandfather, he is survived by four daughters, Christina Leavitt of St. George, Lorreen (Stewart) Brown of Beaver Harbour, Lorraine (William) Justason of Pocologan, Etta (Vance) Cooke of Back Bay; six grandchildren, Michelle Leavitt (Peter Smith) and Stinson Jr., both of Back Bay, Herbert (Dione) Brown of Beaver Harbour, Allen Brown of Pennfield, Tony Justason (Tracy) of Pennfield, Rocky Justason of Seeley's Cove; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene (Manford) Cook of Back Bay, and Gracie Henry of St. Stephen; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Madeline Marguerite Lang (née Gray) Funeral arrangements by Chapel Lawn Funeral Home Peacefully and in the company of her niece Marilyn McNamara, October 22nd, 2004 at Trent Valley Lodge, Trenton, Ontario, Madeline Lang passed away in her 92nd year. She was predeceased by her husband Garnet; brother Lloyd Gray; sisters Arla Gruenke, Frances Kapitan and Alice Ginn; and by two nephews, Carman(Don) Gray and Douglas Gruenke. She is survived by her sister Thelma Fanning of Vancouver; nine nieces and nephews and their families. Madeline, known also as "Madge", "Bun" or simply "Aunt Bun" to so many was born May 13, 1913 the second youngest daughter of Frank and Leila Gray. Growing up in the Dominion City area of Manitoba, she was always quite active in the community, although illness in her teens prevented her from pursuing her dream of a nursing career. Following her marriage to Garnet Lang, she moved to Langside, near Arnaud where they and Garnet's brother Ted, farmed together. The Lang’s usually boarded the teacher of Langside School and Madge was well known for her great meals. Many of the teachers kept in touch with Madge and Garnet through the years. In 1965, the Lang’s retired to Winnipeg where Madge cared for both Ted and Garnet in their declining years. In 1984, Madeline moved to the St. James Kiwanis Lodge, 100 Sinawik Bay where she was a Charter Member and an active participant in many of the activities available there. She enjoyed cribbage, bridge, shuffleboard and also worked on different committees. In November 2001, in failing health, Madge moved to Trenton, Ontario to live with her niece Marilyn McNamara and husband Tom. Madge enjoyed the birds, flowers, garden and her Saturday night hockey. In June 2004 she was hospitalized and in August was admitted to Trent Valley Lodge Nursing Home. Funeral service will be held at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. Visitation in the Chapel on Friday, October 29th, 2004 from 2:00 p.m. until time of Service at 3:00 p.m. Interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. DACUNHA, MANUEL "JOE" The passing of Manuel "Joe" daCunha of Hanwell, NB occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Sunday, October 24, 2004 at the age of 78. Born in Valenca, Portugal, he was the son of the late Antonio and Lina (Cunha) Pita. Joe immigrated to Canada in 1955 leaving Portugal on Easter Sunday arriving by boat at Pier 21, Halifax Harbour, five days later. He was a self-employed stone mason by trade and also specialized in dry wall plastering. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 4, Fredericton. Joe loved to hunt, fish and was an avid Bingo player. Survived by his wife Jacqueline (Wallace); five sons, Jose "Joe" (Diane) DaCunha of Fredericton, Joaquim (Ana) of Woodstock, Jaime (Rosa) of Portugal, Antonio of Spain, Paulo (Lisa) and Antonio both of Moosejaw, Saskatchewan; one daughter, Danica Wallace (Paul Crabbe) of Woodstock, NB; several grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one sister, DeOlinda (Manuel) Arujo; several nieces, nephews and cousins. CARTER, Kay. Died on 24 October 2004 in Ottawa after a short illness caused by pulmonary fibrosis which led to respiratory failure. Born in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England. She finished school at 14 and got herself her first job as a dictaphone typist at MGM. She subsequently worked in the photo lab at the U.S. base in Ruslip. For two years after World War II she served as a member of the Women's Auxiliary Airforce (WAAFS). In 1949 she met Bill Carter, the love of her life, and they married on 31 March 1951. The following year they emigrated to Canada and after 6 years in Toronto they returned to England and built their first house in Rickmansworth. In 1968 Kay and Bill returned to Canada and settled in Watford, Ontario where they built their second house and Kay worked as a secretary at the local high school. Bill died at the tragically early age of 59 of a heart attack. Kay continued to live in Watford until 1990 when she moved to Ottawa to be closer to family. Kay leaves a daughter Kim (Gord), a son Dana (Sylvie) and a granddaughter Lindsey Michelle Carter and her sisters Melissa and Jessica. Her four brothers, Joe, Len, George and Mick Carvey and her sister Mabs live in England. Kay and Bill are driving through the Rocky Mountains on their way to Kelowna in their 1954 turquoise and cream Nash Metropolitan - together forever. Be happy mom. LANKEN (née Sorensen), Gudda Est décédée le 25 octobre 2004, au Centre de Soins prolongés Grace Dart, à Montréal à l'âge de 93 ans. Elle est née à Soborg, Danemark en 1911; la huitième des huit enfants qu'ont eu Jens Peter Sorensen et son épouse Laura Marie Samuelsen. Baptisée Marie Augusta, elle fut connue tout au long de sa vie sous le surnom de Gudda. Gudda, accompagnée de sa soeur et de sa cousine, vint visiter la ville de Montréal en 1927... pour ne plus jamais la quitter. Épouse dévouée pendant 55 ans de feu Uffe Lanken (1905 - 1988), maman chérie de Peter et Dane, fière belle-mère d'Anna McGarrigle, grand-mère aimante de Sylvan et Lily, tante spéciale d'Ingrid Odell, la préférée des amis et de la famille d'Amérique du Nord et de l'Europe. Il y a très longtemps, elle était en charge des opérations à Bostitch pour ensuite devenir la partenaire de plusieurs années dans l'atelier de fleuriste de son mari. Elle a vécu sur une ferme à Côte St-Luc pendant 20 ans, puis sur Westland Drive dans Montréal Ouest pendant 45 ans. Félicitation, mama! NEWBERRY, Jeanne, A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again. Passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2004, after a long and courageous battle with heart disease, at the Shaver Hospital. Lovi ng wife of John for the past 33 years. Devoted mother of Michelle and Ted and his fiancee Dawn Pagano. Dear daughter of Lillian and the late Michael Bertrand (2003). She is survived by her brothers Paul (Marg) Bertrand of Niagara Falls and Robert (Ma rg) Bertrand of Ajax. Holding her close in their memories are several family members and friends. She will be dearly missed by her special friend Shirley Robbie, who offered a great deal of support and love through the past several months. Jeanne wil l be waiting to have another toast with Theresa and Solange. Jean had been a dedicated teacher for 33 years, teaching at St. Alfred's, St. James, and ending her career at Holy Cross when retiring in 2001. Special thanks to those special nurses whose compassion, love and support saw no boundaries and offered her peace in her final days.
