COPPO, Aldo John In loving memory of Aldo John Coppo, 78 years of Coniston, who passed away Friday morning, March 19, 2004 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - Laurentian Site. He was born in Coniston and married Erla (Gould) in 1954 in Coniston. A well known and well liked life resident of Coniston, Aldo had been a plate worker at INCO retiring in 1984 with 43 years service. A devout Roman Catholic he attended St. Paul the Apostle Church. He was a founding volunteer for the Coniston Police Station and he was a longtime member of Club Allegri. He enjoyed the outdoor especially fishing and hunting and he was a keen sports fan. Always quick to help others Aldo was devoted to his loving family. Beloved husband and best friend of Erla (Gould) Coppo of Coniston. Loving father of Mark (partner Meredith) of Coniston, Kevin (spouse Helen) and Ian (wife Sherry) both of Sudbury. Cherished grandfather of Andrea, Brianna and Tammy. Dear son of Diego and Theresa (Barbero) Coppo predeceased. Dear brother of Blanche Pacaud (husband Maurice predeceased) of Welland, and the late Marie Coppo, William Coppo (wife Marceline), Norma Kemp (husband Sid) and two infant siblings all predeceased. KUSTURIN, William In loving memory of William Kusturin, 77 years of Sudbury, who passed away Thursday evening, March 18th, 2004 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph's Health Centre. He was born in Mrkopalj, Yugoslavia and married Roseann (Morrow) in 1954 in South Mountain. William came to Sudbury in 1967 having previously resided and taught in Kirkland Lake. A committed educator he had been a teacher with the Sudbury Board of Education for 15 years retiring in 1982; after which he taught adult education at Cambrian College for another 10 years. A former Kinsmen he was quick to help others having been a volunteer canvasser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Canadian Cancer Society. He was a member of the retired teachers' federation with whom he enjoyed curling. A determined man he will be remembered for his devotion to his loving family especially his wife. Beloved husband of Roseann (Morrow) Kusturin of Sudbury. Loving father of Regina (husband Bill Virgo), Nancy (husband Larry Stefanato), Kelly (husband Mike Champaigne), David (wife Debbie and daughter Jennifer) and Angela (friend Christian Sorenson). LLOYD, H. Blake (1930 - 2004) We are saddened to announce the sudden passing of Blake, at the Great War Memorial Hospital in Perth, Ontario, on the evening of March 20th, 2004 in his 74th year, following a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was a retired air traffic controller, with the RCAF and Transport Canada, an avid nature lover and very active community volunteer. LAPENSÉE, Jean-Charles, OMI Le Père Jean-Charles Lapensée, Oblat de Marie Immaculée, est décédé à Richelieu, le 20 mars 2004, à l'âge de 85 ans et 3 mois. Il était le fils de feu Pierre Lapensée et de feu Clémentine Bouchard. Il fit ses premiers voeux le 2 août 1941 et il a été ordonné prêtre le 16 juin 1946. Au cours de sa vie oblate, il a rempli diverses fonctions. Il a été assistant maître des novices à Richelieu, secrétaire du provincial à Montréal, prédicateur au Cap-de-la-Madeleine, vicaire dans différentes paroisses oblates, supérieur et directeur de la maison de retraites fermées à Mont-Joli. Il s'est retiré définitivement à Richelieu en mars 2001. En plus de sa famille religieuse, il laisse dans le deuil des neveux et des nièces, ainsi que des amis. Born March 2, 1935 in Sydney, NS, he was the son of the late Neil and Dorothy (Anderson) Steele. He was a retired Air Force Veteran and former Supervisor Diesel Mechanic for Douglas Aircraft in Toronto. BECHARD, Romeo 1919-2004 "A GOOD SOLDIER NEVER DIES, HE JUST FADES AWAY" Died peacefully at home, with his family by his side, on March 20th, at the age of 84 years. Cherished and dedicated husband of Stella (nee Zochinsky), with whom he celebrated 63 years of marriage. Loving father to daughters Sandy and husband Ken Lucier, Linda and husband Dominic Balanda, and Darlene and husband Gary Windram. Romeo has a memorial brick in his honour, for serving in WWII, at Dieppe Gardens. Romeo was also a Toronto Maple Leaf and avid Dodge Race Car fan. STAIRS, BETTY RUTH 22 March 1925 - 20 March 2004 The death of Betty Ruth Stairs occurred suddenly but peacefully at her family home in Fredericton, NB, on Saturday, March 20, after a life-time of giving joyfully to others and triumphing over adversity and medical challenges. Betty Ruth is survived by her husband, the Rev. Conard Stairs; her son Gary and his spouse, Susanne Alexander, Fredericton, NB; her son Glenn and his spouse, Stephanie Simpson, Napanee, ON; sisters Margaret Payne, Mooers, NY, and Belle Marie (Dr. Robert) Woodworth, Nampa, ID; brothers, Robert (Beverly) Christensen, West Chazy, NY, Tom (Nancy) Christensen, McLean, VA, and Lyle (Kay) Christensen, Powhatan, VA; a brother-in-law Edison Stairs, Woodstock, NB; three grandchildren, who she cherished deeply, Isaac Prah and Nia Simpson-Stairs, Napanee, ON, and Aaron Alexander-Stairs, Fredericton, NB; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Born in Upland, Indiana, Betty Ruth was raised in upstate NY. She earned her B.Ed. (Music) at Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, MA, where she met the man of her dreams, packed up her paint brushes, piano books, and trombone, and followed him to the windswept shores of Nova Scotia. She became a dedicated parent and assisted "CE" with church ministries in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Maine, and Ontario, and a college presidency. During the summer months, she led many play-filled vacations with CE and the boys at the cottage at Beulah Camp. Following their move to Fredericton, BR, as she was known, became a member and organist at Corbett Avenue Wesleyan Church and loved to sing and schmooze with the Fredericton Choral Society. Prior to her retirement, she was a fashion consultant at Calps Ltd. and compassionately assisted CE with sales at Heritage Memorials. She also partnered with CE in several businesses, including three Christian bookstores and his two devotional publishing ventures. Her last hours were spent caring for CE at his hospital bedside. Visitation will be held at Bishop's Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton, NB, on Monday, 22 March, from 7-9 pm and on Tuesday, 23 March, from 2-4 pm and from 7-9 pm. The funeral will be held at Corbett Avenue Wesleyan Church, Barkers Point, at 2:00 pm, on Wednesday, March 24. Rev. Melrose Norton and Rev. Peter Thomas will officiate. MARTIN LIONEL LACHANCE LACHANCE - At North Bay General Hospital, Friday, March 19, 2004. Martin Lachance beloved wife of Amy Collicutt in his 87th year. Dearly loved father of Robert Lachance (Evelyne) of South Porcupine. Lovingly remembered by two grandchildren Rene Lachance (Lynn) and Elaine Laurin (Mike) and two great grandchildren Steven and Shawn Laurin. SLOAN, Margaret Elizabeth Holleran, Margaret has left on her journey to a new and greater place. She hopes to meet her husband Douglas who preceded her in July 1989. Margaret passed away at the St. Catharines General Hospital on Saturday, March 20, 2004 in her 79th year. He only regret is having to leave her loving family. SHARP, Mitchell, P.C., C.C. A passionate Canadian passed away on March 19, 2004, aged 92, from prostate cancer and the sequelae of a recent fall. Born in Winnipeg in 1911, one year after his parents Thomas and Elizabeth (Little) arrived from Scotland. At age 14, despite a full-time job, Mitchell continued his education, obtaining a B.A. at the University of Manitoba in 1934. During 1937 - 1938 while newly employed by James Richardson & Sons, he attended the London School of Economics. On his return, he applied his expertise in the grain trade for Richardson clients. He came to Ottawa in 1942 when offered a wartime job in the Department of Finance. Muriel Richardson, then President and CEO of James Richardson & Sons, understood his desire to stay in Ottawa after the war and he remained forever grateful to the Richardson family for their support. At the end of 1950, he was named Associate Deputy Minister in the Department of Trade and Commerce; from 1957 to 1958, he served as Deputy Minister. From 1958 to 1962, he re-entered the private sector as Vice President of the Toronto-based Brazilian Traction Light and Power Company. The voters in the riding of Eglington elected him to the House of Commons in 1963. He was first appointed to Cabinet as Minister of Trade and Commerce in 1963 and then became Minister of Finance in 1965. From 1968 to 1974 he served as Secretary of State for External Affairs and from 1974 to 1976 as President of the Privy Council and House Leader. Upon leaving politics in 1978 he became Commissioner of the Northern Pipeline Agency, a position he held for the next 10 years. Subsequently he worked as a Policy Associate at Strategicon. From 1993 to 2003, he served as Personal Advisor to the Prime Minister. Over the years, he received several honorary degrees from Canadian universities; an officer of the Order of Canada, he was elevated to Companion in 1999. Music sustained him throughout his life and he was very proud of the Diploma Honoris Causa he received from The Royal Conservatory of Music. He had an enduring zeal for and dedication to the National Arts Centre Orchestra as well as a deep admiration for it's Music Director Maestro Pinchas Zukerman, whom he numbered among his good friends. He is predeceased by his sister May and brother Harry; his first wife Daisy Boyd, and second wife Jeannette Dugal. He is survived by his wife Jeanne d'Arc (Labrecque), his son Noel (Norma), three grandchildren and five great-granddaughters; his cousin Marguerite (Rita) Sharp of Denny, Scotland; his niece Joy McDiarmid of Victoria Beach, Manitoba; niece Dianne Sharp and nephew Glen (Lucy) Sharp of St. Catharines, Ontario; in-laws, nephews and nieces of the Boyd and Dugal families and the Labrecque family. Sister-in-law Jacqueline Dugal will miss him. He will be fondly remembered by Lawrence Holden of Abingdon, Virginia. He enjoyed a unique collegial relationship and close friendship with the Right Honorable Jean Chretien that spanned more than 40 years. Gratitude is expressed to David Leighton, Chairman of the Board, and Peter Herrndorf, Director General and CEO of the National Arts Centre, both of whom understood his dedication to the NAC. He remained lifelong friends with his political supporters and with colleagues from Western Canada. He will be missed by the members of the Round Table, with whom he enjoyed weekly discussions on different topics at the Rideau Club for the past 20 years. He never missed an opportunity to express his opinion. BARTEAUX, Gerald Arthur - 82, Karsdale, Annapolis Co., passed away Friday, March 19, 2004, at the home of his caregiver, Judy Brittain, New Minas. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Arthur and Emma (Fifield) Barteaux. Gerald did masonry work for a number of years, was a cook at Chez Leo Restaurant for a time and was a clamer. He was a janitor at Port Royal Baptist Church for three years. Gerald loved nature and was a woodsman. He and his wife built their own home in Karsdale. He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Elizabeth Outhouse; stepdaughter, Janet (Gerard) Ryan, Tantallon, Sask.; stepgrandchildren, Kelly, Bradley and Paula; five step great-grandchildren; one step great great-grandson. Le pasteur Henri Louis Jean Lanctin s’est endormi paisiblement dans le Seigneur, à l’âge de 80 ans, à sa résidence de Moncton, le dimanche 21 mars 2004. Né à Québec le 16 avril 1923, il était fils de feu Rév. Henri Lanctin et de feu Eugénie Meslet. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse bien-aimée, Marcia Hélène Lane; ses filles: Suzanne de Phoenix, en Arizona, Jocelyn (Roland) de Victoria, en Colombie-Britannique et Karen (Jim) de Moncton; un fils, le Dr Henri Philip (Pat) de Sartell, au Minnesota; un frère, le pasteur Eugène Lanctin (Micheline) de Campbellton, ainsi que sept petits-enfants: Michael, Jonathan, David, Dennis, James, Christopher et Laura. Quatre frères: Maurice, Yvon, Georges et Raymond, l’ont précédé dans la tombe. M. Lanctin s’est converti au Seigneur Jésus-Christ lorsqu’il était jeune garçon. À l’âge de 17 ans, il s’est engagé dans la Marine canadienne, avec laquelle il a servi quatre ans dans l’Atlantique Nord et en Méditerranée, durant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. Après être retourné à la vie civile, il a suivi un cours en art commercial au Saint John Vocationnal School. Par la suite, il a travaillé à son compte en arts visuels à Moncton, durant plusieurs années. Pendant l’été 1950, M. Lanctin a senti que Dieu l’appelait à consacrer sa vie à temps plein au ministère de la Parole. Il a étudié alors au London Bible Institute, en Ontario, ainsi qu’à l’Institut Biblique de Montréal. Dès l’automne 1954, son épouse et lui ont servi le Seigneur ensemble à la mission La Bonne Nouvelle à Moncton, fondée par son père en 1934. M. Lanctin a été pasteur de l’Église baptiste française de cette ville à deux occasions. Il a été également directeur du camp biblique l’Allée Verte pendant 31 ans. De plus, il a beaucoup oeuvré dans l’Évangile le long des côtes est et nord du Nouveau-Brunswick, ainsi qu’en Gaspésie. À sa retraite en 1988, le couple Lanctin a déménagé dans la région de Yarmouth, en Nouvelle-Écosse, où il a animé l’émission La Bible nous Parle à la radio communautaire CIFA. Il a également mis sur pied une émission semblable à la télévision, diffusée dans les régions de Yarmouth et Pubnico. Le couple est revenu demeurer à Moncton en juillet 2003. La dépouille mortelle sera exposée à compter de 15h, le mardi 23 mars, au Salon funéraire Cadmans, situé à l’angle des rues St-George et Alma, à Moncton. Born April 16, 1923 in Quebec City, Quebec, he was a son of the late Rev. Henri and Eugenie (Meslet) Lanctin. He attended Feller Institute, Grand Ligne, Quebec and Moncton High School. In 1947 he he graduated in commercial Art from the Saint John Vocational School and pursued theological studies at London Bible Institute, Ontario and l'Institut Biblique de Montreal. In 1955 he became a missionary with La Bonne Nouvelle Mission, Moncton, where he was a member of the Board of Directors. He was ordained under the Atlantic Baptist Convention in 1978, having pastored at the Moncton French Baptist Church and the Richibucto Mission. During a span of 31 years he was Camp Director of Camp l'Allee Verte, Irishtown, NB, a board member of the Union of French Baptist Churches in Canada and a past president of the Canadian Protestant League. Rev. Lanctin was a member of the Sunny Brae Baptist Church. A veteran of WWII, serving with the Canadian Navy in the North Atlantic and North Africa campaigns. A member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 54. Following his retirement in 1988 to Darling Lake, Yarmouth County, he continued a television and radio ministry, "La Bible Nous Parle" in that community. Rev. Lanctin touched many lives through his missionary and pastoral services, his chalk art ministry and paintings of baptismal scenes in various church throughout the Atlantic Provinces. Cherished by his family and friends, he will lovingly be remembered for his strong faith, his loyalty and compassion for others. He was the devoted husband of, Marcia (Lane) Lanctin for 51 years and loving father of, Suzanne Miller of Phoenix, Arizona, Dr. Henri P. Lanctin (Patricia) of Sartell, Minnesota, Jocelyn Issacs (Roland) of Victoria, BC and Karen Hopper (Jim) of Moncton; seven grandchildren, Michael, Jonathan, David, Dennis, James, Christopher and Laura. He also leaves behind a brother, Rev. Eugene Lanctin (Micheline) of Campbellton and 20 nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his stepmother, Marjorie (MacKenzie) Lanctin; an infant brother, LouisJean; brothers, J. W. Maurice, killed in action during WWII, Yvon, Georges and Raymond. Visiting hours will be held from Cadman's Funeral Home, 114 Alma Street, Moncton, on Tuesday from 3-5 and 7-9. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #54, Sunny Brae will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. The funeral service will be held from the the Sunny Brae Baptist Church on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at 1: 30 PM, with Rev. Gordon Poley officiating, assisted by Rev. Tom Townsend and Rev. Robert Landry.The interment will take place at Elmwood Cemetery at a later date. Freda Peraziana PORT ELGIN, NB - The death of Freda Peraziana, age 83, of Port Elgin, occurred at The Moncton City Hospital on Friday, March 19, 2004. Born in Port Elgin, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Regina (Legere) Landry. She will be sadly missed by her sister, Norma Gardiner, Moncton and her nephew, David (Deboroah) Gallant, Sooke, BC. She was predeceased by her husband, William and by her sister, Germaine Savoie on March 4, 2004. The remains are resting at the Jones Funeral Home, 3 West Main Street, Port Elgin, NB (364-1300) on Thursday from 7 to 9 pm.
