McGEACHIE, Mona (Slingerland), 95, of St. Davids, died Saturday, February 21, 2004 at Upper Canada Lodge, Niagara-on-the-Lake. Predeceased by her husband John (1982), her parents Howard and Melissa, and her brother Carl Slingerland. She leaves to mo urn her passing; two daughters, Sheila (Roland) White and Jacqueline (Robert) White; seven grandchildren, James, John, Mark, Barbara, Sharon, David and Brian; 12 great-grandchildren, and her brother Don (Ginny) Slingerland. She was a member of St. Da vids United Church for over 60 years, and served on all of it's boards and committees. She lived her entire life in the Niagara area. She was descended from Christian Warner and the Stulls (United Empire Loyalists) on her Mother's side, and from the Slingerlands (United Empire Loyalists) on her Father's side. BERNARD, JANE SCHUBERT B.Mus. (Mount Allison University, 1937 - Jane Bernard died peacefully at her residence in Woodstock, NB, on Friday, February 20, 2004. She was in her 89th year. Daughter of the late Dr. George Frederick Clarke and Mary Schubert Clarke of Woodstock. Jane is survived by her daughter Mary Bernard (Ian Fleming), Cambridge, England; son, Ian Bernard (Janie Logan), Ottawa; grandchildren Thetis (Chris) Kruger, Drew Bernard and Bronwynn Bernard, and great grandchildren Cailean Bernard and Ryland Bernard-Kruger, all of Ottawa; a sister Dees Homer, Woodstock; brother Frederick (Dorothy) Clarke, Woodstock; nephew Stephen (Anne) Homer and grand-nieces Zoe and Lea Homer, Montreal; and nephews George Frederick Clarke, Calgary, and Robin Clarke, Victoria. Following cremation, friends may visit at the Carleton Funeral Home, 337 Lockhart Mill Road, Jacksonville on Tuesday, February 24, from 3:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-8:00 p.m. A service celebrating Jane's life will be held in the chapel of the funeral home at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25. STEPHEN DAVID (BUCK) CAUL It is with great sadness that the family of Stephen David Caul announce his passing on Monday, Feb. 23, 2004 at the age of 82. Stephen, or Buck as he was known to many, was born March 18, 1921 in Langenburg, Sask. to William and Martha Caul. As a very young boy, Stephen moved to Rainy River District with his family, living first in Rainy River, Ont. and then La Vallee, Ont. As a teenager, he moved to his present home in Fort Frances, Ont. Stephen had a great love of the outdoors. As a young man, he worked in the logging industry, cutting and hauling pulpwood. From 1975-86, he worked as a guard in the paper mill for Boise Cascade. Stephen was a farmer at heart. He took great pride in raising beef cattle, clearing the land, and growing and producing hay, grain, and wonderful garden crops. Up until his death, Stephen still could be found out on his tractor raking hay and plowing snow. Stephen was the ultimate family man. On July 2, 1947, he married the love of his life, Mary Stephen and Mary did everything in life together. One was never seen without the other. He was very proud of his three children and was a fantastic support system in their lives. Stephen leaves to mourn his wife, Mary; daughters, Betty Ann (Len) LaRocque and June Caul; and son, Bill (Luanne) Caul. He also leaves his very precious grandchildren, Shannon LaRoque, Jamie Caul, Jacquee and Jeff Savage, and Stacy, Shawn, Aaron, and Jon Caul. Also surviving are Stephen’s sisters, Florence Drennan and Ellen Parkin; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Caul. As per Stephen’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. Family and friends are welcome to visit with the family to celebrate Stephen’s life at the family residence on McIrvine Road in Fort Frances on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004 from 2-4 p.m. In memoriam donations may be made to the Northern Canadian Cancer Society.

VERA AGNES FARAGO Vera Farago passed away Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, one day after celebrating her 88th birthday. Vera was born in Guernsey, Sask. in 1916. After attending school, she worked on her father’s wheat farm near Young, Sask. During these early years, Vera spent much of her spare time helping the elementary school children with their extra-curricular activities. As well, she always taught Sunday School at the local church. In 1941, she married Louis Farago, a young teacher in the area, who she had known since she was 15 years old. Vera and Lou lived in the Saskatchewan towns of Strasbourg and Battleford before they moved east to Rainy River, Ont. in 1949 and eventually to Fort Frances, Ont. in 1959. They had three children, Connie (Jack) Rafferty of North Carolina, Donna (predeceased in 1947), and David (Mary) of Wawa, Ont. Vera was predeceased by two sisters, Erna and Esther, as well as two brothers, Arthur and Harold. She is survived by her brother, Berthold, who lives in Vancouver, B.C. Vera, a loving, faithful wife to Lou for 63 years, was a caring, dedicated, and generous mother. She delighted in her four grandchildren, Robin Danis of Thunder Bay, Ont., Mark Whiteside of Calgary, Alta., Jackie Rafferty of South Carolina, and Emma Farago of Wawa, Ont.; as well as her great-grandchildren, Rayanna and Cameron Danis of Thunder Bay, Ont. She was a devout Christian who never lost her faith throughout her life. She was always active in her church in each community in which she lived. She was a member of the Knox United Church in Fort Frances for more than 40 years. She also was a dedicated volunteer worker for many organizations in the communities in which she lived. Vera wrote poetry and savoured the time she spent reading the works of great writers. A child of the soil, Vera loved flowers and always looked forward to planting time in the spring. This gentle giving lady will be deeply missed by her husband, family, and all who knew her. Memorial services will be held Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Knox United Church in Fort Frances, with Rev. Marietta Marshall officiating.

SCHWARZ, Rosemarie (Pfeifer), With her family and friends by her side Rosemarie has gone to be with her Lord and Saviour on February 20, 2004 in her 40th year. She leaves behind to mourn, her husband and best friend Arnold Schwarz, and two wonderful boys, Lucas Timothy (16) and Jason David (15), both at home. PAUL M. GRATTON October 10, 1974 - February 20, 2004 NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower, But only so an hour. The leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. With great sorrow, Paul's family mourns with loved ones, the loss of their beloved "Paulo" who passed away peacefully in the presence of family and friends at the age of 29 years. He will be thought of and remembered with love every day by his father, Maurice Gratton, his mother, Marie Chartier (Clive Taylor), big brother Leo Gratton (Mona), his two adoring nephews, Daniel and Bradyn Gratton; sister Diane Steinke (Darrell); his best friend Chris Thomas; treasured grandmother Isabelle Chartier, and his many aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. Paul will always be remembered for his great sense of humour and his ability to bring a smile to the faces of everyone he knew. He was raised on a farm in St. Adolphe which gave him an appreciation and love for the outdoors. Paul had many fun loving interests such as his target practicing, snowmobiling, travelling and Second World War and Nascar collections. He loved life! Paul recently built his home on an acreage next door to his big brother Leo, where he enjoyed working the land, planting trees, and spending quality time with his family and friends. Paul was an extraordinary uncle to his two nephews, both of which were blessed to have Paul live nearby. He spoiled them with his infinite love and affection. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the family and friends who, over the past five months, have spent countless hours by Paul's bedside. Paul never spent a single daylight hour alone, ensuring that he knew how special and loved he was. Special mention goes to Chris Thomas and parents, Faye and Dave Thomas, Auntie Edith and Uncle Noel Chartier and to his Uncle Robert and Sandra Chartier. A special thanks also goes to the compassionate staff of GA5 of the Health Sciences Centre for doing their best to make Paul's stay with them, and the family's time there, more endurable. Thank you. EMMA BERNARDIN (nee BRUNEAU) Peacefully, with her family at her side, at the Grace General Hospital on Friday, February 20, 2004, Mrs. Emma Bernardin of Elie, MB passed away at the age of 85 years. Katharine Grace Steeves 1918 - 2004 HALIFAX, N.S. - Katharine "Brownie" Steeves, 85, died on February 20, 2004 after a heroic battle with Parkinson's Disease. Raised in Plaster Rock, N.B., she was the daughter of Donald and Katharine Fraser. She received a diploma in Home Economics from Mount Allison University and then her Nursing diploma from Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. She married soul mate Lea Steeves, a physician and educator in 1942. With the arrival of her children she put aside her nursing career to commit her life and boundless energy to her family. She returned to nursing 30 years later. She was wholly devoted to her husband and to his medical career but never at the expense of her devotion to her sons. Family camping, hiking and canoeing trips became requisite aspects of Lea's professional engagements across the Atlantic Region, Canada and Britain. This also meant accepting challenges such as spearheading the first annual Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation fund raising campaign. Katharine served her community in many other ways; in particular she was very active on various committees in the United Church from fundraising to outreach and elder aerobics programs. She had an intuitive understanding of children and an unwavering devotion to practical education, which naturally led her into an 18 year relationship with the Boy Scout Movement. As "Akela" to the 18th Halifax cub pack and later also as District Commissioner she displayed an undiscriminating desire to see that every "cub" had a unique experience fostering their individual gifts and talents. Whether organizing a holiday hockey league or putting on a family puppet show for other families at the YMCA, Katharine was always there when children were involved. She was also known for her bountiful gardens of flowers and produce. Her love of gardening grew from her early childhood and reflected the patience, caring and equanimity that she exhibited in all aspects of her life. Gardening served as a continual educational metaphor, which Katharine used to instill the virtues of practical living within her sons and grandchildren. When arthritis limited her mobility, she took up the craft of weaving and later rug hooking. Not surprisingly her administrative skills soon found her actively involved in The Rug Hooking Guild of Nova Scotia. She is lovingly remembered by her family whose welfare she placed above all else. She was predeceased by two brothers, Donald (Mac) Fraser and Alex Fraser.
