ALLMARK, M. Gordon Passed away peacefully at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at the age of 94. Beloved husband of the late Margaret (nee Thomas). Loving father of John (Sandra) of Oakville and Barry (Darlene) of Kelowna, B.C. Proud grandfather of David (Christina) and Brad of Oakville and of Brendan and Kelsey of Kelowna, B.C. and great grandfather of Meghan and Benjamin of Oakville. His brother Ben predeceased him by 36 hours. Gordon graduated from Queens University with an MBA in Pharmacology. He resided in Ottawa for most of his adult life and devoted his career to the Federal Government in the Department of National Health and Welfare, Food and Drug Directorate. At the time of his retirement he was the Assistant Director General, Drugs. Gordon also spent two years on loan from the Canadian Government to the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. All his life Gordon had a love of travel, spectator sports (particularly hockey) and was an avid news reader. His family will miss his generous spirit and guidance. As a dedicated member of Dominion Chalmers United Church, he was involved with many committees and served as Elder. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Friday, January 9th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 10th at 10 a.m. in Dominion Chalmers United Church (O'Connor at Cooper Street). HOLOBOW, Padre Marat M. RCAF, CAF March 9, 1925 - January 6, 2004 It is with sadness and deep loss that the family of Marat M. Holobow announces his passing on the 6th of January, 2004 at the Kingston General Hospital. "Marty" and his beloved wife Marian celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary this year. The family was blessed to have spent this past Christmas all together at home: children Dan (Jennifer-Lynn Marcus), Naomi (Fred Genesee), and Mike (Grace Aubrecht), as well as grandchildren Ajay, Patricia, Jennifer, and James. Fond uncle of Lesley Skinner (Kevin) and Kim Pasacreta (Stephen) of Vancouver and only brother of the late Gertrude Schedler. The congregations of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kingston as well as St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Montreal will share in the family's loss. After his discharge following the war, Marty returned to school, and it was at Luther College, Regina, where he first met Marian. He was ordained in 1954. During the next 25 years, he served as Protestant Chaplain at bases throughout Canada, France, and Germany. Among other activities, he also served in the Middle East as part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force, and as chairman of the Canadian Bible Society, Montreal Branch. After retiring from the military, he continued his ministry as pastor at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Montreal and practiced caring ministry as pastor at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Montreal and practiced caring ministry for the infirmed of St. Mark's in Kingston, Ontario. Marty lived with grace, love, compassion, and dignity. His other passions were Marian, his family, flying, Canadian politics, history, and sports. He will be deeply missed. LeSURF, Violet (nee Poppy), Passed away peacefully at Oakwood Park Lodge at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 6th, 2004. Violet was born on December 28, 1903 in London, England celebrating her 100th birthday with a fine party at the Lodge with her famil y and friends at which the Niagara Men's Chorus performed. She loved parties and participated well in this special one. She is predeceased by one sister and five brothers. She married William (Will) LeSurf on April 4th, 1926 and had a happy marriage until Will passed away in 1993. She is survived by her only child Eric, and his beloved wife Linda, her grandchildren Ian (Patty) and Mark (Mia) and was deeply saddened at the passing of her grandson Richard (Shelley). Also surviving are her great-gr andchildren Skylor and his mother Sue, Kyle, Taryn, Richard, Deniz, Michael and Christopher. Violet was a skilled dressmaker and designer and later a very successful businesswoman. She lived life to the fullest, worked hard, played hard and loved peo ple. She and Will moved to Canada in 1980 at the age of 76 to be close to Eric and his family. They both became active with the Friendship Group at the Coronation Centre where they spent many happy times. A sincere thank you to the staff at Oakwood P ark Lodge for the love and care given to Violet during her final few years. Ayesha A. (Hallett) Hawkins DOUGLAS, NB - At Pine Grove Nursing Home on Tuesday, January 6, 2004, Ayesha A. (Hallett) Hawkins of Douglas, NB passed away. Born in Douglas, she was the daughter of the late Clowes and Alice (Heine) Hallett and wife of the late Earle Emerson Hawkins. Ayesha worked as a hairdresser by trade and operated her own business from her home for many years. She was a member of the Douglas United Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Preston and his wife Sandra of Douglas and their children, Andrea Child and Leanne Perrin; and Russell and his wife Elizabeth ("Liz") of Pointe du Chne and their children, Jennifer Hawkins, Jaime Hawkins, and Jennifer Gerrior. She is also survived by great grandchildren Alysha and Matthew, MacLean and Madison, and Taylor and Zachary; brothers, Marquis and Dean; sisters Evelyn Leike and Winnifred Craighead; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Earle; and by brothers, Eulas, Theodore, and Richard. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 9, 2004 at 1:00 PM from the Douglas Baptist Church, with Rev. Jerry Horsman officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. Born in Glenwood, NB she was the daughter of the late James Conroy and Mary Cameron. She was a Homemaker and member of St. Michael's Parish. She is survived by four daughters, Kay (John) Bell of Miramichi, Patricia Kennedy of Miramichi, Anne (Jeff) Dewolfe of Nordin, Carmel (Gerald) Mullins of Oromocto; son William Kennedy of Miramichi; 14 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild Jared Driscoll of St John; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by two sisters, Katherine Conway, Florence Silliker; three brothers, Alex, Jack and Jim Conway; and one daughter Rita. Remains resting at Maher's Funeral Home with visitation Wednesday from 7 to 9pm and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held from St. Michael's Basilica, Miramichi on Friday, January 9, 2004 at 10am. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. James William Brown BROWN'S YARD, NB - James William Brown died peacefully at the Moncton Hospital on January 6, 2004. James was born in Bathurst, NB and was the son of the late Matthew and Pricilla (Sawtell) Brown and husband of Lotty Brown. James was employed at CN Railway for 38 1/2 years holding various positions until his retirement from the Employee Relations Department. He was a life member of the Scottish Right and past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Campbellton and was a member of Wesley Memorial United Church in Moncton. James enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage and he loved bluegrass music and camping. If your walking down the street one day and someone says "Are you a Turtle", think of Jim. He is survived by one son, Peter Brown; three daughters, Carol McLaughlin (Allan), Donna Coupal (Richard) and Sharon Brown (Ernie); one brother, York Brown (Winnie); eight grandchildren, Jonah, Luke, Jessica, Natasha, Theresa, Meghan, Joseph and Solaya; and several nieces and nephews. MULLOLA, Eino John Eric In loving memory of Eino, John, Eric Mullola, 82 years, who passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph's Health Center. Born in Finland, he owned and operated Sudbury Service Station Maintenance for over 25 years, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed flying as a pilot for over 35 years. Eino was an avid skier, downhill, heli and cross country which, in younger days, he had successfully raced competitively. He was at home in the outdoors, gardening, skating, fishing or hunting. Eino loved to be with people and socialize, he was always accessible and shared his great sense of humour. Beloved husband of Martha (Isaacson) Mullola, predeceased 1979, and Debbie Ethier of Sudbury. Dear son of Nicodemus and Hilma Mullola, both predeceased. Dear brother of Leo predeceased (wife Phyllis predeceased). Active in many fields of science and technology in the United Kingdom (British Electrical and Allied Industries Research Association) and Canada (Royal Canadian Navy, Defence Research Board - Telecommunications Establishment, RCA Victor Company, 1967 World Exhibition, CRTC, Department of the Secretary of State, Science Council of Canada). Predeceased by wife Krystyna (nee Starzynska). Mourned by daughters Barbara (husband Alex Wishart) and Katarzyna (husband Darrell Allin), grandson Andrzej Wishart, sister Anna Radomyska (husband Jan Radomyski), sister-in-law Gerda Starzynski and other relatives and devoted friends in various parts of the world. Rioux était vétéran de la deuxième guerre mondiale et membre de la légion royale canadienne, filiale 21 de Grand-Sault. GWASSALIA, Margit (Demus), After a brief illness, Margit's life ended peacefully surrounded by friends on Saturday, January 3, 2004 at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in her 97th year. Predeceased by her husband Dr. Schotha Gwassalia (1989). Margit was born in Baku, Russia, where her father was a petroleum engineer. Educated in Switzerland during her early years, she worked and lived in Latvia, France and Germany. Margit was a linguist and translator, fluent in Russian, French, German and English. She worked for the British Southern Railways before the war and for the British Military Government after the war in Frankfurt. There, she met and married Schotha and they immigrated to Canada in 1951 where Dr. Gwassalia interned at the Hamilton General Hospital before coming to St. Catharines in 1955. Dr. Gwassalia practiced medicine at 5 Welland Ave., with Margit efficiently managing his office until his retirement in 1987. Margit donated her time and energy unselfishly for nearly 30 years dedicat ing herself to teaching immigrants to Canada to read and write English. She lived her life by her principles. A gracious lady she was a role model, dearly loved and a great friend to many of all ages and a wonderful example of human spirit at its ver y best. An extraordinary friend, her kindness, optimism, generosity, enthusiasm and love will continue to live in the lives she touched. She endowed her friends with happiness, hope, strength, and wisdom. These attributes will not be forgotten by tho se who loved her. In accordance to her wishes, cremation has taken place. Private inurnment at Victoria Lawn Cemetery.
