BLANCHARD, Frederick Harold Fred passed away peacefully with his wife Barbara by his side on January 1, 2004 at the Chemainus Health Care Centre. He was born May 29, 1924 in Los Angeles, California and raised in Edmonton. Fred proudly served in the US Navy and saw active duty in the South Pacific. For many years he owned and operated Fred Blanchard & Son Plastering & Stucco Contractors, working throughout Alberta and BC. After retirement, he enjoyed art with wood and stone carving. Fred was happily married to Barbara for 55 years and lovingly raised four children: Rick, Jim, Bob, and Joni-Rae, with numerous grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. BRUCE, D.I.W., Q.C. - After a brief illness in Peterborough on January 4, 2004 in his 88th year. Douglas will be sadly missed by friends and family across Canada. He is survived by his wife Beverly, daughters Heather Nicolosi of San Diego, California, Barbara Bourne of London, son John of Peterborough and sons-in-law Rev. Dr. Garry Nicolosi, Gordon Godfrey and Andrew Bourne. Loving grandfather to Allison Nicolosi, Nathan Godfrey, Courtney Godfrey, MacKenzie Godrey, Benjamin Bourne and Matthew Bourne. He was pre-deceased by brothers Fraser "Scotty" of Montreal, Allan "Scotty" of Toronto and his beloved daughter Jane Godfrey of Kemptville, Ontario. A Naval Officer during World War II, he was "Relentless in Chase" serving his country with distinction on the HMCS Iroquois and HMCS Sioux. He later enjoyed a successful career with Westinghouse Canada in Hamilton until his retirement in December 1981. A community minded individual, he also made strong contributions to the Hamilton Branches of the CNIB and the John Howard Society and he was a proud member of the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity- U of T. Special thanks to the staff and students of the Classics Dept. at Trent University for the opportunity for Mr. Bruce to continue his love and passion for learning. JENNINGS, MARY BLANCHE - The death of Mary Blanche Jennings of Adelaide Street, Saint John, occurred on Sunday, January 4, 2004 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born at Canso, Nova Scotia, daughter of the late Seymour and Margaret Ellen (Hanlon) Hurst, she had been a resident of Saint John most of her life. She had been employed with ComCare as a ComCare worker, joined Lantic Sugar for a number of years, and had served as a nurse's aide at Centracare, formerly the Provincial Hospital, before her retirement. Mary was a member of Branch #2, Royal Canadian Legion Ladies' Auxiliary and was an avid bowler and card player. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy Harding Jennings. She is survived by her son Granville (Barbara) of Quispamsis, sister Elva Copeland of Halifax, two grandchildren Anthony (Tony) and Shawn Jennings; two great-grandchildren Ashley and Katlyin, and her very special friend Harry Campbell of Saint John West. Survived his wife, Valerie; their children, Gary (Mary), of Fredericton; Richard (Charlotte) of Maugerville and Peter (Kim) of Fredericton; twelve grandchildren, Jason, Chelsea, Colin and Linda Hird, Trevor Olsen, Jennifer Galant, Rebecca Savage, Steven, Amenda, Tiffny, and Melissa Olsen and Sandra Simon. Predeceased by his parents; grandson Jason Olsen; and one brother, James Hird. There will be no visitation by request. CARTER, MADELINE M. - The death of Madeline M. Carter, of Millidgeville, occurred on January 5, 2004, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Moncton she was the daughter of the late Lindley W. and Mildred (Moore) Carter. She graduated from the University of New Brunswick and received her MA (French) from Middlebury College, Vermont. She taught for a year in Edinburgh, Scotland, and for thirty-five years at Saint John High School, fifteen of which she was head of the French Department. She attended summer schools at several universities in France and Switzerland and was an enthusiastic world traveler. She is survived by several cousins in the United States. Her three brothers predeceased her. At her request there will be no visiting, although following cremation at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row (634-7424), the memorial service will be held on Friday, January 9, 2004, at 11:00 AM, from Brenan's Chapel. BECKETT , WALDO ELMER - The death of Waldo E. Beckett, husband of Helen (Kirk) Beckett of Oak Point NB, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on January 5, 2004. Born in New Jerusalem, NB, he was the son of the late Eldon C. and Florence B. (Johnson) Beckett. Waldo served in WWII as an officer and pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force 424 Tiger Squadron , and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #87. Waldo was an active member of the Brown's Flat Baptist Church serving as deacon and trustee. He was a mill-wright by trade working many years for Beckett Lumber, and also worked at IGA in Martinon, for 10 years as produce manager. Waldo was very much a family man, he was married to his wife Helen for over 50 years. Besides his wife Helen he is survived by five sons, Rev. Dr. Malcolm Beckett (Laura), Grand Bay- Westfield, NB, David Beckett (Jacqueline), Brown's Flat, NB, Henry Beckett (Elona), Brown's Flat, NB, Roy Beckett (Kimberley), Canning, NS, and Eldon Beckett, Oak Point, NB, two daughters, Linda Beckett, Saint John, NB, and Joyce McKay (Freeman), Hampstead, NB, one brother Eldon Beckett (Jean), Brown's Flat, NB, six sisters, Erma Bevans, Stanford, Conn.
