HIRD, ALBERT PETER The death of Albert Peter Hird of Oromocto West occurred at home on Monday, January 5th, 2004 . Born in Ontario, he was the husband of Valerie (Greenlaw) Hird. Albert served in NATO. He enlisted in 1954 with the Infantry and was discharged from the Service Corps in 1983. Survived his wife, Valerie; their children, Gary (Mary), of Fredericton; Richard (Charlotte) of Maugerville and Peter (Kim) of Fredericton; twelve grandchildren, Jason, Chelsea, Colin and Linda Hird, Trevor Olsen, Jennifer Galant, Rebecca Savage, Steven, Amenda, Tiffny, and Melissa Olsen and Sandra Simon. Predeceased by his parents; grandson Jason Olsen; and one brother, James Hird. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at the Oromocto Baptist Church on Thursday, January 8th, 2004 at 2:00 pm. Rev. Norman Woodworth officiating. BECKETT , WALDO ELMER - The death of Waldo E. Beckett, husband of Helen (Kirk) Beckett of Oak Point NB, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on January 5, 2004. Born in New Jerusalem, NB, he was the son of the late Eldon C. and Florence B. (Johnson) Beckett. Waldo served in WWII as an officer and pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force 424 Tiger Squadron , and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #87. Waldo was an active member of the Brown's Flat Baptist Church serving as deacon and trustee. He was a mill-wright by trade working many years for Beckett Lumber, and also worked at IGA in Martinon, for 10 years as produce manager. Waldo was very much a family man, he was married to his wife Helen for over 50 years. Besides his wife Helen he is survived by five sons, Rev. Dr. Malcolm Beckett (Laura), Grand Bay- Westfield, NB, David Beckett (Jacqueline), Brown's Flat, NB, Henry Beckett (Elona), Brown's Flat, NB, Roy Beckett (Kimberley), Canning, NS, and Eldon Beckett, Oak Point, NB, two daughters, Linda Beckett, Saint John, NB, and Joyce McKay (Freeman), Hampstead, NB, one brother Eldon Beckett (Jean), Brown's Flat, NB, six sisters, Erma Bevans, Stanford, Conn. Loving mother of James Fraser of North Bay, Catherine Ruth (Ray) of Kitchener, Jane Fraser (Victor Veltri) of North Bay and Donald Fraser (Tina) also of North Bay. SHILLINGTON, (HAMM) A. BURPEE - The death of Burpee Shillington occurred at his residence, 219 Ellerdale St. on January 5, 2004. Born in Saint John in 1913, he ran various business interests including a family farm and milk business as well as Burp's Esso and Coastal Bearings Ltd until his retirement in 1985. Burpee was a lifelong member of Silver Falls United Church and held various positions within the church organization, including Clerk of Session and life member of the Unified Board. As well; for 60 years, he was a member of Masonic Temple, Hibernia Lodge No. 3. Burpee is survived by his two sons Fred (Dawn) and Jim (Joan); five grandchildren Krista Shillington, Neil (Laurie) Shillington, Jay (Cindy) Shillington, Janelle Shillington and Johanna Shillington; four great grandchildren Sara, Gregory, Devin and Courtney, as well as his brother Ralph Hamm and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Vera in 1997, as well as his brother, Clarence Hamm and sisters Lillian Moore, Gertrude French, Margaret Barr Whittaker and Vera Macdonald. BRUCE, D.I.W., Q.C. - After a brief illness in Peterborough on January 4, 2004 in his 88th year. Douglas will be sadly missed by friends and family across Canada. He is survived by his wife Beverly, daughters Heather Nicolosi of San Diego, California, Barbara Bourne of London, son John of Peterborough and sons-in-law Rev. Dr. Garry Nicolosi, Gordon Godfrey and Andrew Bourne. Loving grandfather to Allison Nicolosi, Nathan Godfrey, Courtney Godfrey, MacKenzie Godrey, Benjamin Bourne and Matthew Bourne. He was pre-deceased by brothers Fraser "Scotty" of Montreal, Allan "Scotty" of Toronto and his beloved daughter Jane Godfrey of Kemptville, Ontario. A Naval Officer during World War II, he was "Relentless in Chase" serving his country with distinction on the HMCS Iroquois and HMCS Sioux. He later enjoyed a successful career with Westinghouse Canada in Hamilton until his retirement in December 1981. A community minded individual, he also made strong contributions to the Hamilton Branches of the CNIB and the John Howard Society and he was a proud member of the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity- U of T. Special thanks to the staff and students of the Classics Dept. at Trent University for the opportunity for Mr. Bruce to continue his love and passion for learning.
