With great sadness we announce the passing of Ted Franklin on December 28, in his ninetieth year. Beloved husband of the late Lena Ida Montour, cherished father of Diann, Karen (Michel Janelle) and Rosemary (Steven Samalack); dear grandfather to Allison (Brad Bossert), Carolyn and Christine Janelle, Nicholas and David Samalack. The funeral service for Carmel Brooks, 45 Ontario St., Kapuskasing, will take place at 2 p.m. today at Notre Dame de la Paix church. Rev. Fernand Villeneuve will direct the service. Spring interment will be in Opasatika. Ms. Brooks, 75, died Dec. 27, 2002 at Sensenbrenner Hospital. She was born April 20, 1927 in Brownington, Vermont, U.S.A. A housewife, she belonged to les Femmes Chrétiennes, ministre de communion in Opasatika. She liked to read, knit and crossword puzzles. Ms. Brooks was predeceased by her husband Patrick, son Pierre, brothers Hillaire, Antoine and Cécilien, sister Marguerite Leclerc and a son in law, Raymond Laberge. She leaves five sons: Walter (Denise) of Chateau Richer, Luc (Georgette), Donald (Pauline), Pat (Catherine) and Raymond (Alice) all of Kapuskasing, and six daughters: Monique (Lucien) Deschesne, Lisa Laberge and Linda (Fidel) Turgeon all of Kapuskasing, Jeannine (Barry) Belshaw, Sudbury, Lorraine (Narcise) Bélanger of Hearst, and Aline (Rémi) Carrier of Mattice. Also left to mourn are sisters Lina Chevrier of Sault Ste. Marie, and Antoinette Larochelle and Patricia Sigouin of Kapuskasing, two brothers Aimé and Arthur Beausoleil, both of Kapuskasing, and 27 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Lovingly remembered by his wife Patricia, son Stuart and his wife Sara in Kingston, and daughter Robin in Calgary; his brother Archibald (Erma) and sisters Mary and Roberta, all of Glace Bay, Cape Breton; nieces, nephews and all his many friends. BUDOVITCH, FRANK LOUIS Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 29, 2003. Born in Saint John, NB on August 10, 1920 he spent most of his life in Fredericton. He and the late Ben Medjuck founded Medjuck & Budovitch Limited, a furniture business which served New Brunswick for fifty years. During his years in business he was a member of the Fredericton Rotary Club and the Fredericton Golf and Curling Club. An enthusiastic leader of the Heart Menders Labatt Relay Team he was proud of the contribution he and his fellow teammates made to the Dr. Everett Chalmers' Hospital Foundation. He was a member of the Sgoolai Israel Synagogue and a past president of the congregation, as well as a founding member of the Fredericton Chapter of B'nai Brith. A strong supporter of the state of Israel, he was recognized for his leadership in the promotion of Israeli bonds and for his efforts in working towards the reforestation and development of the state. Mr. Budovitch was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Minnie (Hoffman); his brother, Bernard and his daughter-in-law Carolyn (McGarvie). He is survived by his wife of 61 years Daisy (Velensky); his sons, Mitchell, Arnold (Judy), Steven, and Howard (Rachel) and his eight grandchildren, Jason (Jessica), Amy, Eric, Paul, Shana (Tim), Natasha, Maya and Robyn. The family is grateful to the doctors and nurses at the Everett Chalmers Hospital who showed him great kindness during his last days, and to Dr. Cal Bruce who treated him with care and compassion throughout his senior years. CSJ (Sr. Mary Florence) Sister Florence Ritza passed away peacefully into her eternal rest at the Pembroke General Hospital on December 28th, 2003. She was in the 71st year of her religious life. Left to mourn her loss are her Sisters in the Congregation, her sisters, Margaret (Angus) Beanish of Barry's Bay and Agnes Ritza of Killaloe, Ontario, her brother Alphonse Ritza of Calgary, Alberta as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and friends. Sister Florence began her ministry as a teacher in Douglas, Ontario and continued as a teacher/principle in Pembroke and Petawawa. She had a talent for setting up library facilities and did so in many schools and religious communities. After retiring from teaching she kept very busy volunteering as a librarian, sacristan and trainer of altar servers. She was always eager to share her talents and did so with grace and expertise. Sister Florence was born in Barry's Bay, Ontario, a daughter of the late Anthony Ritza and Martha Szczypior. She is predeceased by her brothers, Frank, Edmund, Bronis, Richard and Eric. En compagnie de son époux, elle a été bénévole pour l'Aide à l'enfance pendant plus de 25 ans alors qu'ils ont pris soin de plus de 120 enfants. Elle fut précédée dans la mort par son époux Laurier, par une soeur : Yvette, ainsi que par deux frères : Edgar et Robert. 1941 - 2003 Helen passed away peacefully in the loving arms of her husband Sandy during the evening of 27 December at Saint-Vincent Hospital in Ottawa after a long, valiant effort to overcome her illness. Helen took great pride in her accomplishments - a special education teacher, an artist and an accomplished flowers arranger in the Ikebana fashion. She was especially proud of her one woman art shows in Rome and Australia, her successful convening in Ottawa of the 14th North American Regional Conference for Ikebana International and of her volunteer support to the Ottawa Tulip Festival. Helen is survived by her sister Julia and husband Frank and her brother Ray. She will be sorely missed by her sister-in-law Gynt, her brother-in-law Mac and wife Mary, her nieces and nephews and many friends and acquaintances. The support, care and love provided by the staff of Saint-Vincent Hospital are highly appreciated. A gathering to celebrate Helen's life will take place on Friday, 2 January from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Reception Room at the Heritage Funeral Home at 2871 St. Joseph Blvd., in Orleans, (613) 830-2305. Ronald "Ron" Goodwin 1943 - 2003 Ronald "Ron" O.M. Goodwin, 60, of Moncton, passed away at The Moncton Hospital on Friday, December 26, 2003. Born in New Scotland, he was the son of the late Merritt and Lucy (Wilson) Goodwin. He was a Truck Driver for 23 years and was employed by Gerald King. Ron was an outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and camping. Raymond L. MacKinnon Raymond L. MacKinnon, 66 of Riverview, NB passed away at his residence on Saturday, December 27th surrounded by his loving family. Born in Sydney, NS, Ray was the son of the late Frank and Margaret (MacLean) MacKinnon. A graduate of Sydney Academy High School, he then attended Xavier Junior College in his home town and Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish Nova Scotia. He completed his formal education at Nova Scotia Technical College earning a degree in Electrical Engineering. Ray worked with the public service for 48 years with CN Rail as Regional Signal Engineer - St Lawrence Region in Montreal and Regional Engineer Signals and Communications Atlantic Region in Moncton. At Transport Canada - Surface, he served as Railway Signal Systems Officer. Until his retirement he was a member of the Corporation of the Engineers of Quebec and the Association of Professional Engineers of the Province of New Brunswick. He was a great family man, a dedicated Catholic and a long time member of Saint Bernard's Roman Catholic Church. After his family, Ray's second great passion was hockey. He was raised on Falmouth Street across from the old Sydney Forum and this would have a strong influence on him for the rest of his life. He played high school hockey and while at Nova Scotia Technical College he played on the varsity team and was awarded an athletic "T" for his exceptional play. In his senior years he was heavily involved in Old Timer's hockey and at times played for the Riverview Retreads and the Nifty Fifties up until October of this year. While at CN, he played baseball in their company league as a catcher. Ray will be sadly by his wife of 37 years, Valerie (Mason); son, Keith, Halifax; sisters, Sr. Florence MacKinnon CND, Holy Angels Convent, Sydney, Dorothy Plumridge, Halifax; brother, Bernard (Joan), Halifax; several nieces and nephews. Constance "Connie" Hoover Constance "Connie" Hoover of Moncton, passed away at the K. E. Spencer Home on Saturday, December 27, 2003. Born in Hopewell, NS she was the daughter of John L. and Barbara MacDonald. She was a member of St. John's United Church. Connie was a member of Y.W.C.A., the World Wild Life and the Canadian Wild Life Federation, Greenpeace, the Kindness Club, and the Humane Trapping Assoc. Several years ago, she received a "Heart of Gold" certificate from Air Canada and the community newspaper. For her involvement and contribution she has made to her community. She with several friends, organized the Moncton Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (S.P.C.A.) in 1955 and then had an Animal Shelter built in 1956 on Brandon St. Moncton. She worked as a volunteer every day for 22 years, until a new manager was found. Mr. Ray Ward, took over this very difficult position in 1978. A new shelter was built in 1980 in Caledonia Park. She is survived by step son, Edward "Ted" Hoover of Burlington, On., and by cousins, Jim MacDonald, Barbara Harrigan and Ian MacDonald. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, John Ernest "Ernie" Hoover in 1975. At Connie's request there is no visitation or funeral service. A private family committal service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Moncton in the spring with Rev. Paul Cumming officiating. JEANNE VINET (nee JOUBERT) 1920-2003 After a long and fulfilling life, Jeanne has finished her course here on earth and has answered her Master's call. Jeanne passed away at the St. Pierre Hospital on December 26 at 83 years of age. She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 58 years Frank; her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild, Gilbert, Raymond (Margaret Aduddell) and Marc; Katie (Tim Patterson) and Claire; Sarah-Anne (Ricardo Castillo); Ronald (Marie Malo) and Joanne (Joel Ruest) and Robert; Patricia (Adrien Mangin) and Joel; and Paul (Diana Pienkowski) and Carolyn and Daniel Cowan; brothers and sisters, Jean-Marie (Marguerite) of Victoraville, QC, Maguerite and Denis of St. Pierre Jolys, Leon (Gertrude) of Winnipeg and Rose Girard of Elie; and one sister in-law, Aurise Joubert of St. Pierre Jolys and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. As a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, educator and friend, Jeanne touched the lives of many people. She embraced many causes throughout her life, always giving and never asking in return. Her special treasures were her grandchildren. She took great pride in all their achievements. Even during her greatest moments of suffering they could easily bring a smile to her face. IRVINE, Harry Alexander, On Sunday, December 28, 2003, Harry peacefully passed away at Valley Park Lodge in his 88th year. Cherished husband and best friend of Rhoda for 57 years. Dear father of Thomas (Joanne), of Gravenhurst, Philip (Darlene), of Chilliwack, B.C., and Carol (Blair) Heuser, of Niagara Falls. Loving grandfather of Laura (Ken MacIntyre), Jill, Lisa, Sarah, Carly and Danielle. Brother-in-law of Yvonne (Harold) Garrett and Marion Irvine. Predeceased by his grandson, Paul Irvine (1 999), brother Norman and sister Mildred Brooks. Harry worked at American Carborundum for 42 years, retiring on December 31, 1980. He was a Captain in the American Army during the Second World War. Harry was a member of I.O.F. as well as an avid golfe r, fisherman and hunter. AURELE RUDOLPH (RON) COUTU October 12, 1932-December 22, 2003 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather. Ron was born in St. Boniface and grew up in St. Laurent with his mother, father and eight brothers and sisters. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in October 1951 and served at Camp Shilo, C.F.B. Borden, C.F.B. Portage La Prairie, and C.F.B. Petawawa where he was honourably released on September 1975, achieving the rank of Warrant Officer. Ron was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for the past 25 years. Ron was predeceased by his father Edmund, mother Marie, and brother Guy. He leaves to cherish his beautiful memory daughters, Cheryl (Doug) Healey, and Janice (Mickey) Delisle; grandchildren, Dayna, Myra, Kyle, and Kurt; brothers, Paul, Jean (Shauna); sisters, Claudette, Clemence (Al), Carol (Gary), Lillian, and Gertrude. NELSON, ELLEN AMELIA "NELLIE" - The death of Ellen "Nellie" Amelia (Geary) Nelson of College Hill Road, Rothesay, NB, formerly of Metcalf Street, Saint John, NB, wife of the late Fenwick Robert Nelson, occurred at her residence on Sunday, December 28, 2003. Born in Tottenham, London, England on March 18, 1908, she was the daughter of the late William and Ellen (Pryke) Geary; in 1910 she immigrated to Canada with her family. She was very active in the Pythian Order, having been their pianist for many years. A Past Grand Chief of the Grand Temple Pythian Sisters of the Maritime Provinces; Past Supreme Representative of the Supreme Temple; a member of the Martello Temple # 25 Pythian Sisters since 1927; Charter Member of El Fallah Santha # 113 Nomads of Avrudaka; a 47 year former member of the Happy Gang Senior Citizens; and a member of St. Luke's Anglican Church. She is survived by her nieces Phyllis Foley, Victoria, BC, and Valerie (Len) Drew, Vancouver, BC, nephews, Arthur (Norma) Geary and Malcolm (Elaine) Geary, both of Saint John, NB and many other great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, George Charles (1958) and William John Geary (1994).
