MORIN, Charles E. Passed away suddenly in his 70th year on December 11, 2003 at W.R.H.C.-Metropolitan Campus. Father of Robert Morin and wife Monica; Tecumseh and Jean-Paul Morin; Etobicoke. Dear friend and former husband of Bernadette Morin-Gannon. Predeceased by his parents Alcide and Yvonne Morin. Survived by 2 brothers, 6 sisters and predeceased by 1 brother. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Charles was a former member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local #663 in Sarnia. Cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation will take place at The Marcotte Funeral Home and Chapel, 12105 Tecumseh Road, Tecumseh (ph. # 735-2830) on Tuesday December 16th from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 10:30 a.m. A tree will be planted in memory of Charles Morin in the Marcotte Heritage Forest.A dedication service will be held September 26, 2004. FERRIER, Kathleen Beatrice-It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Kathleen Beatrice Ferrier on December 1, 2003, in Grace Hospital, Winnipeg. Kathleen was born March 12, 1920, in Winnipeg and was raised in Saint James by her late parents Nelson and Anne Cox. Kathleen worked many years in the insurance business and enjoyed winters in Arizona with her husband Bob. She will be sadly missed by her son, Greg; daughter-in-law, Shirley; grandchildren, Suzanne, Brodie, Heather and Melanie; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Kaylee, all of Halifax. Kathleen also will be missed by her sisters-in-law, Joyce Ferrier and Betty Collicutt; brother-in-law, Charles Hilton; numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Robert William Ferrier. Cremation and interment have taken place in Winnipeg. A memorial service will be held in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax, on Tuesday, December 16, at 7:30 p.m. If friends so desire, donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

On December 8, 2003, Pauline, blessed daughter of the late Louisa Massey, peacefully passed away at Father Dowd House; Pauline would have celebrated her eighty-sixth birthday on December 22, 2003. She is survived by nephews Douglas Lonie (CA) and Ronald Lonie (AZ), great nephew Douglas Jr., great niece Jennifer and two great-great nephews, Lance and Hayden Lonie. Pauline was devoted to her family, friends and her church, St. Matthew's in Hampstead. The family is so grateful for the kindness of Pauline's friends in her final years and especially to Ms Hazel Ottley (Montreal) for her special friendship and love. Also the family wishes to thank the staff at Father Dowd House for all the care she had this year. Pauline's gentle nature and kindness will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved this very special lady. DANEAU (Young), Joan-Passed away quietly at home surrounded by her loving family on December 12, 2003. She was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, Rejean Daneau. She is survived by her daughter, Manon Daneau (Brent Baker), Truro; son, Roch Daneau (Tracy Daneau), Dartmouth; her wonderful grandsons, Jaxon, Alex, and Justin. She is also survived by her foster mother, Mary Cullen; mother, Helen Scott, and aunts, Esther and Christina, both of Halifax; Beatrice, Campbell River, B.C. She was predeceased by her aunt, Margaret; her father, Thomas Gordon (Sydney Mines). She worked for many years at Hermes Electronics, American Motors and the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. She had many kind friends who she loved dearly, namely her loving partner, John Parsons for his care, kindness, love and support. The family would like to thank John for his dedication and strength at the best and worse times. She enjoyed life and brightened the lives of others. Her relentless passion for her family's well-being guided her life and gave it purpose. A person of action and a tireless worker despite much suffering, her courage and determination gave hope and inspiration to others. She will be greatly missed by all, most especially her three angels. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 1234 Cole Harbour Rd., Cole Harbour. In the USA he leaves his sons George (Nawal) and their children, and Samir (Sousan). In Brazil, he leaves the family of his eldest sister Miriam. In Ottawa he leaves the family of his sister, the late Linda (George) Haddad, his sister Haifa (the late Raymond) Sader. Also left to mourn his passing are many nieces, nephews and cousins. Michel was the patriarch of his family, a community leader and very generous benefactor. In many corners of the world, he was loved and respected by all who knew him. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Sunday, December 14, 11 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Ottawa.

SHELLEY BLONDIN (nee BOUTANG) It is with deep sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of our beloved Shelley on December 1, 2003 in Hawksbury, ON. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 31 years, Marcel and her daughters, Micheline (Jeff) and Tina. She also leaves to cherish her memory her sisters, Lorry (Norman), Donna (Bill) and brother, Duane (Wanda); Lyle (Marcelle), along with numerous nieces and nephews and precious friends. Shelley was born and raised in Vassar, MB. After marrying, Shelley relocated many times, finally settling in the L'Original area of eastern Ontario. Shelley's main focus in life was her family. She enjoyed the simple things in life. She gained much joy from baking, country music, pets and spending time in the outdoors. Shelley was predeceased by her parents, George and Jeanne Boutang and her father-in-law Lucien Blondin. Funeral services were held in L'Original on Friday, December 5. Cremation has taken place and interment will follow this sumêmer in her home town of Vassar, MB. After a tough two week battle with cancer Judy has sailed away from us on Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at the age of 55. She died peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus. She leaves behind her husband, Bob Uline, her mother, Aletha (Pound) Martinell, her two boys, Matthew and Andrew MacDonald, her sister, Janet (Smith) McCallum, and her niece Marin McCallum. All the people she has touched over the years, especially the children and parents at the Glebe Co-operative Nursery School, will dearly miss her. Working with children was her reason for being. Judy had such a zeal for living that her passing will leave a void in so many lives. Heartfelt thanks go to the doctors and nurses from the Gynecologic Oncology Department of the Ottawa General who were so kind and supportive in Judy's last days. A memorial service will be held in Charlottetown at a later date. For family and friends in the Ottawa area, a celebratory gathering will be organized for the spring to coincide with boating season. Judy will keep teaching, sailing, skating and cycling in our hearts forever. PHN Massey to her family, in her 91st year, peacefully, December 11, 2003. Daughter of the late Inez and Frank Graff of Cochrane, Ontario. She will be deeply missed by her son Brian (Dee); grandchildren Laura (Tony), Gordon (Tara) and great-grandchildren Joel, Genevieve, Emma, Julia and baby Jack. Survived by her sister and a life long companion, Jean Frances Murphy, close cousin Nona Hodge, sister-in-law Alexina Graff and nieces Valerie Butterfield and Linda Graff Kapuscinski. She is predeceased by her brother Ray. She arrived in Ottawa the winter of 1940 together with her mother, sister and four year old son as well as a St. Michael's Hospital nursing diploma under her arm. With determination and wit she balanced her parenting responsibilities and nursing career perfectly and found time to add a Public Health certificate to her credentials. A more loyal friend could not be found. Massey was a loving and steadying influence in our lives. Because of her, we were safer and life was abundant. She was and will remain our guiding star. Aged 91. Died December 11, 2003 of complications arising from a long struggle with heart disease. He is predeceased by his wife, Mildred Marguerite McFarlane (1999). He leaves sons John (Kathryn) of Campbellville, Brian (Margaret Mitchell) of London and Philip (Mairi Elliott) of Wooler, grandchildren Sean (Karen Addison), Courtney, Lyndsey, Christine, Keir, Katharine and great-grand children Jeremy and Jamie Lee. He is survived as well by his nieces, Dianne Beaven of Winnipeg, Susan Hardy (Ann Watt) of Pembroke, and Anne Whitley (her husband Bob and son Dillon) and through marriage, Mrs. June McFarlane and family of Ottawa. John was born in Ottawa in 1912, the youngest child of Herbert Francis Beaven and Susan Effie Butler. He eventually followed in his father's footsteps as a travelling salesman, a vocation at which he excelled all his life. In 1937, he married Marguerite at St Giles Presbyterian Church. In 1946, he moved his young family to Toronto where he first sold flatware for McGlashan Clark Co. Limited and then in 1952 took a sales position with Oneida Canada, Limited. He was a star salesman from the beginning and helped make Oneida the dominant tabletop supplier to hotels across Canada until his retirement in 1977. In 1979, he and his wife Marguerite separated. (They never divorced). John reconstructed his life in retirement with a renewed focus on life in Milton Ontario, closer to sons John and Philip and their families. There he indulged in his other great life passion, gardening. He won several local awards for his beautiful gardens. His own sterling health and constitution suffered initial troubling setbacks in 1995. John maintained his intractable independence in his Milton townhouse until July, 2003 when he moved just down the street to Allendale long term care facility. 1912 - 2003. Bryna (Kastner) Freed passed away in her sleep at Maimonides, December 4. Mother of the late Gerald (Sally Sockett), Mortimer (Anne-Marie), and Susan Miriam. Bryna was a spirited grandmother to Jonathan (Liane) and Carl, Vanessa and Geraldine, and great-grandmother to Linsay and Jackson. Former mother-in-law of Saundra. Bryna's bold character, lively humour and great singing voice left a lasting impression on all who knew her. Her many talents and love of the limelight live on in her descendents. In her prime, she devoted much energy to fund-raising for B'nai-B'rith. President of her chapter, she was renowned for her daring and highly successful ventures. Sincere thanks to Susan Cliff and the 3-North staff for their kindness and care. Donations to Maimonides in Bryna's name would be greatly appreciated.

OC, LL.D. 93 years old, Sylva Malka Gelber, whose years of activism in pre-Israel Palestine eventually propelled her to be the first director of the Canadian Department of Labour's Women's Bureau, died on December 9th, 2003, of complications from a stroke. She was 93 and lived in Ottawa. During the heady years of pioneering in gains for women's rights and Medicare in Canada during the 1960s and 70s, she travelled the country, never shrill and always reasoned in her campaign for equality for women in the country's labour force. She took this pragmatic approach to the United Nations where she represented Canada on the UN Commission for the Status of Women between 1970 - 74. A social and industrial activist at heart, she never lost her zest for a good argument on those issues which had been part of her adult life since she left her comfortable Toronto home in the early 1930s for the turmoil of Jerusalem and Palestine. There she became the first graduate of the Va'ad Leumi School of Social Work - now the Faculty of Social Work of the Hebrew University - and took on jobs incongruous with her upbringing which had included schooling at Havergal College, a private girl's school. She worked in Palestine during the Mandate as a family counsellor, a probation officer and medical social worker at Hadassah Hospital, and then with the Palestine Department of Labour from 1942 - 48 when she returned to Canada. The adventuresome 15 years Sylva Gelber lived in the turmoil of Palestine are chronicled with affection, awe and frankness in "No Balm in Gilead: A Personal Retrospective of Mandate Days in Palestine" published in 1989. By the time she moved back to Canada, she could switch effortlessly among Hebrew and Arabic and English which impressed no one in bureaucratic Ottawa, but did startle the Capital's stuffy side, she often noted mischievously. Her deep red lipstick and nail polish when paired with her fast sports cars belied the image of the traditional Ottawa civil servant she could never be, despite distinguished and proud accomplishments in promoting federal health insurance and Medicare until they became the law of the land. Along the way, she accepted many appointments to serve Canada at International Labour Organization (ILO) conferences, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the UN General Assembly. She was a member of the Order of Canada and was awarded honorary degrees from several universities including Queen's, Memorial, Trent, Guelph and Mount St. Vincent. Sylva Malka Gelber was born in 1910 in Toronto to Sara (Morris) and Louis Gelber. Her father, a survivor of pogroms in Eastern Europe, was determined that her four brothers, all of whom attended Upper Canada College, and she, all receive worldly educations beyond their specific Jewish community. She always admired her father for this farsightedness in encouraging his children to become part of a broader society. At the University of Toronto, she produced plays. She sang spirituals on a Toronto radio station, but her parents would have none of a show business career. She was packed off to Columbia University in New York; but even that did not satisfy her rambunctious spirit and soon she was on her way to distant Palestine. Never domesticated as women of her day usually were, she paid little attention to her kitchen pantry when she finally settled in Ottawa; but always gregarious, she loved to entertain around the piano which she played by ear and with great gusto. Her library of records and CDs, was always in use as music filled her life; and she has endowed an important annual prize through The Sylva Gelber Music Foundation, which is granted to an outstanding young Canadian musician at the early stage of his or her career. In retirement, she energetically participated in the Canadian Institute of International Affairs and the Wednesday Luncheon Club of former cabinet ministers and civil servants, such as her neighbour, Jack Pickersgill, who thrashed over current political issues. Sylva Gelber was predeceased by her four brothers, Lionel, Marvin, Arthur and Shalome Michael. She is survived by her four nieces and their husbands, Nance Gelber and Dan Bjarnason, Patty and David Rubin, Judith Gelber and Dan Presley, and Sara and Richard Charney, all of Toronto; her sister-in-law, Marianne Gelber of New York, four great nephews and a great niece, Gerald and Noah Rubin, and Adam, Andrew and Laura Charney; as well as cousins Ruth Jewel and David Eisen; David Alexandor, and Ruth Gelber all of Toronto; and Ivan Chorney and Betsy Rigal, both of Ottawa. At Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Avenue West (1 light west of Dufferin) for service on Thursday, December 11, 2003 at 12:00 noon. Interment Beth Tzedec Memorial Park.

Passed away at the Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus on November 27th, 2003 at the age of 75 yeas. Gerald had been a diabetic for over 35 years and on dialysis for 2 years. He was blind but could see shadows. He died of heart failure. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 53 years, Jean Belanger; his dear brothers Cliff (Eileen) of Edmonton, AB, Phil (Louise) of Grimsby, ON; his dear friends Helmut and Rita Koeck of Wakefield, PQ and Mrs. Waltroud Thiemann of Victoria, BC; his dearest cousin Jacqueline (George) Hursan of Sutton, PQ. A Mass at Saint Patrick's Basilica on January 25, 2004 at 11 a.m. will be offered. Cremation private.
