Copyright: Karsh, Ottawa MACKAY, DR. COLIN B. - Dr. Colin Bridges Mackay, July 26, 1920 - November 27, 2003. Colin was raised and lived a good part of his life in Rothesay, New Brunswick. He was the son of the late Colin and Jeanette D. (Bridges) Mackay. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ives (Anglin) in November, 2001. He is survived by his sister, Janet Hart of Vancouver, and a large number of cousins, nephews and nieces. Colin led an active and productive life, graduating from UNB with a BA in history; he went on to serve in the Second World War in the Royal Canadian Navy and was attached to the RN, commanding landing craft during the Normandy Invasion, on June 6th., 1944 and later in the Far East. After the War, Colin returned to school to graduate from UBC with a law degree in 1949 and then spent a brief period practicing and teaching law. Colin went on to serve as the President of the University of New Brunswick from 1953 to 1969. Dr. Mackay kept busy in a variety of roles following his term as President at UNB. He was the Executive Director of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada from 1971-75. He was a member of the Canadian delegation to the 34th and 35th Assemblies of the United Nations (1979-80) and continued to act as a Special Advisor in 1981 and 1984. He was closely involved with the development of a number of universities in Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Kenya. He served on numerous national and international boards and was very active in promoting the Arts in his home province. Dr. Mackay had many honours bestowed upon him over the years. He was appointed a Queen's Council in June of 1963 and an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1970. He received honorary degrees from 13 Universities. A tireless worker and adventurer, Colin kept himself busy until his health failed him in recent years. Known for his quick mind and his endless energy, he was a man who travelled the world and dined with heads of state, but was frequently spotted riding his motor scooter to his camp on the St. John River. He collected art and beautiful antiques but also enjoyed owning the latest gadgets and 'toys'. "Uncle Colin" thoroughly enjoyed entertaining family at the Farm Camp and took great pleasure in teaching several generations about the proud history of their ancestors. He will be missed. Following cremation, the funeral will be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Rothesay, on Tuesday, December 2, 2003 with the service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place later in Fernhill Cemetery. Sam devoted a great deal of his life helping others as a member of The Lions Club, and won many awards for his work.

THORNE, DOUGLAS WAUGH The death of Douglas Waugh Thorne of Fredericton, NB, occurred at the York Manor Nursing Home, Fredericton, NB, on Friday, November 28th, 2003. Born in Havelock, NB, he was the son of the late Brewer and Sarah Thorne; the husband of the late Doreen (Clarke) Thorne. Doug graduated from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro, NS. For 43 years, he worked as an Inspector with the Seed Potato Certification Service of Agriculture Canada in Victoria and Carleton Counties, retiring from the Fredericton office in 1981. Doug was involved in the community, a former member of the Florenceville Volunteer Fire Department, Boy Scout Leader, and Director of the BB & F Power Commission and was a coach for local sports teams. He was an active member of the church and served as a Deacon at the Brunswick Street Baptist Church for many years. Survived by three sons, Gary D, (Karen) of Ilderton, ON, David W. (Susan) of Port Colborne, ON and Brian C. (Elaine) of Coldbrook, NS; nine grandchildren, Sarah, Chris, Aaron, Matthew, Bradley, Amy, Lisa, Kimberly, Tracey; six great-grandchildren, Justin, Samantha, Emma, Chloe, Hannah and Spencer; one brother, Gordon Thorne (Shirley) of Fredericton, several nephews and nieces and cousins. Predeceased by his wife Doreen, parents, one sister, Joyce Lawrence and an infant great-grandson Caleb McCann. RUBIN, FLORENCE MARION (PETE) 77 - At the Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday November 29th, 2003 Florence (Pete) Marion (Garnett) Rubin, wife of Nathan J. Rubin, of 14 Prince William St., St. George, N.B. passed away unexpectedly. Pete was born in Fairhaven, Deer Island on April 14th, 1926. She was the daughter of the late John Wilkinson Garnett and Mary Elizabeth (Watson) Garnett. Pete is survived by her husband Nathan (Nate), four sons Louis N. Rubin (Christine), of St. George, Samuel M. Rubin (Sandra) of St. George, Perri R. Rubin of St. Stephen, John D. Haggart (Lorna), of Toronto, Ont. Two daughters Mary E. McAdam (James) of St. George, Sari L. Harris (Tony) of Pennfield, N.B. Sixteen Grandchildren Martin Rubin, Louis Rubin, Isaac Rubin, Hillary Rubin, Benjamin Rubin, Aaron Rubin, Andrew McAdam, Jonathon McAdam, Christopher Rubin, Ashley Rubin, all of St. George, N.B. Beloved wife, loving mother, grandmother, and a dear friend to many. She was the last living member of her immediate family. LOGAN, HARTLEY G. - The death of Hartley Garfield Logan, age 84, of Oakland Street, occurred on Saturday, November 29, 2003 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John he was the son of the late Leonard and Leah (Foster) Logan. Hartley had served overseas in WWII as a gunner in the 8th Army Field Regiment, was employed with the CPR as a trucker for 40 1/2 years and with Atkins Construction for 42 1/2 years, a member of Royal Canadian Legion branch # 64, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by one brother Douglas (Nedra) Logan of Saint John, two sisters Phyllis (Gordon) Davidson of Salt Springs and Frances Baird of Saint John, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Hartley will be sadly missed by all. Besides his parents he was predeceased by two brothers Norman and William, two sisters Eleanor and Elodie. SUZANNE "SUE" BRAZEAU 1961-2003 The family announces with sorrow her sudden and unexpected death at Toronto Western Hospital on Friday, November 28, 2003 at age 42 years. Beloved wife of Craig Salmonson of Timmins. Dearest daughter of Roger and Simone Brazeau of Sturgeon Falls and dear sister of Lynn (Mrs Michel Cartier) of Sturgeon Falls and Carol (Mrs Yannick Bouchard) of Haileybury. Loving aunt of Gaetan and Serge Cartier and Celeste Bouchard. Daughter-in-law of Joanne Salmonson of North Bay and late Robert Salmonson (1989) and sister-in-law of Leslie Gjos (husband Robert) of Desbarats and Fay-Ellen Salmonson (Fabrizio Lovisa) of Richmond Hill. Sue was born in Elliot Lake and had been a resident of Timmins since 1988. She married her longtime partner of 17 years Craig, in Jamaica on February 20, 2001. Sue was a well known and respected real estate agent with Claimpost Realty for many years. She will be sadly missed by her many relatives, friends and colleagues. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 from the Church of the Nativity. Remembrance donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Children's Treatment Center would be appreciated. MR. JOHN ST. JACQUES The St. Jacques family announces with sorrow the death of John St. Jacques of Haileybury. Mr. St. Jacques passed away at Temiskaming Hospital-New Liskeard, on Friday, November 28th, 2003 at the age of 77 years. He was predeceased by his parents Antoine and Blanche St. Jacques. Mr. St. Jacques will be sadly missed by his loving wife Aurore (née Léveillé) and is survived by his loving daughters: Claire (and Aurel) Fournier of Chelmsford and Joanne (and Larry) Anderson of North Cobalt. Also left to mourn are his grandchildren: Danny, Shelley, Jennifer, Sherri, Debra and Anne; and great-grandchildren: Jana, Joshua, Eric, Justin, Josée and Shawn. He is also survived by his siblings: Gertrude Delorme of Sudbury, Marguerite (and Rolly) Lauriault of Kanata and Cécile (and Lawrence) O'Malley of Elliot Lake.
