d'ENTREMONT, Felix Joseph-79, West Pubnico, died August 30, 2003, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in West Pubnico, he was a son of the late Maximillen and Mary (Dugas) d'Entremont. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 66, West Pubnico. He worked in Hamilton, Ont. for International Harverster for 39 years. He will be sadly missed by his niece, Donna Morton whom he resided with for the past five years; nephews, Maynard (Norma) Amirault, Lower West Pubnico; Vaughn (Gayle) Amirault, Harland Amirault, both of West Pubnico; Warren Amirault, Newellton, Shelburne Co.; great-niece, Melanie (Mrs. Jonathan Surette), Lower West Pubnico; great-nephew, Matthew (Melinda) Morton, Lower Argyle. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Carmelita and Arsene. Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. Monday with a Legion service at 7:30 p.m. and prayers at 8 p.m. and again visiting on Tuesday from 9-9:30 a.m., all in West Pubnico Funeral Home, Middle West Pubnico. Funeral will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Middle West Pubnico, Father Donald Amirault officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donations to any charity of choice.

BLANCHE MARIE VAN BUEKENHOUT December 20, 1925-August 31, 2003 On August 31, 2003 at the St. Boniface Hospital, Blanche passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Blanche was born in Belgium to Julien and Emerence Maertens. She was predeceased by her husband Maurice; her parents; her infant sister Margaret and her brother George. Blanche is survived by her imêmediate family, two sons, Robert and Thomas; daughter-in-law Linda; grandchildren, Jamie, Charlene and Lee-Anne; Jamie's wife Melinda and their daughter and Blanche's beloved great granddaughter Jessica. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Irene Daeninck, Jenny Miller, Lillian Dusessoy, Andrew Maertens and Gerrard Maertens and numerous nieces and nephews. She was married to Maurice in 1946 and for 39 years enjoyed a loving marriage. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed caring for her family. She lived by the phrase, "It is a great life if you don't weaken" and she never did. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 4 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Bernadette Parish, 820 Cottonwood Road. Interment will follow in the Belgium Sacred Heart Cemetery. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses, doctors and staff of the St. Boniface Hospital who helped Blanche pass away in peace and comfort. AMY EDITH ORLESTA WOOD (BARNEWALL) Amy Edith Orlesta Wood (Barnewall) 95, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, Fort Frances, Ont., passed away peacefully at her residence on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, with her daughter, Edith at her side. She was born on May 17, 1908 in Montreal, Quebec, and moved to the Rainy River District in 1923. She lived in Fort Frances since 1944. Prior to her retirement, she worked as an RNA at La Verendrye General Hospital for many years. On Nov. 20, 1925 she was united in marriage in Fort Frances to Nathan Wood who predeceased her on July 27, 1988. Amy is survived by three daughters; Edith Richert, Alice Shurvell and Helen (Gus) Desaulniers, one son, Art (Beatrice) Wood; 28 grandchildren; 77 great-grandchildren; and 26 great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Amy is also survived by special nephew James Barnewall of New York and niece, Janice Furey of Ohio (children of Amy’s deceased brother, Roy Barnewall), as well as cousin, Stephanie Moutte and husband, Ron, of Willowdale, Ont. She was predeceased by her parents, Percy and Maria Barnewall, two infant daughters; son, Robert and wife, Theresa; sons-in-law, Henry Richert and Lloyd Shurvell; four grandchildren; and two brothers, Roy and Melvin. She was a long time resident of Fort Frances and a member of Knox United Church, Senior Citizens Club 27, McIrvine Women’s Institute, Rainycrest Auxiliary, Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29, Ladies Auxiliary and the La Verendrye Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed knitting, quilting, sewing, teaching piano lessons and playing piano. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Knox United Church. Chaplain John Chornabay will officiate with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances. Friends may visit on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003 from 7 until 9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home. The pallbearers will be Amy’s grandsons, Allan Richert, Norman Wood, Dan Desaulniers, Glen Wood, Garth Shurvell and nephew, Floyd Wood. Raymond Bernard McCann Passed away at Kingston General Hospital on August 12, 2003, in his 85th year. Raymond was born in Westport, Ontario, the son of the late Ted and Katie McCann. He and his wife Delma, lived in Westport, and then in the Seeley's Bay area for some 40 years, where he worked as a farmer and a labourer. He was known for his Irish wit and good sense of humor and enjoyed landscaping, tending to his farm, homemade pies, wood cutting, gardening, hunting and spending time with his gr andchildren and great grandchildren: Jeff, Andrea, Lisa, Brett, Debby, Tracey, Jason, Samantha, Tyler, Emma, Maddie and Lucas. He is survived by his children, Darla (the late Hank) Buunk, Linda (Meryl) Ralph, Betty (Terry) Leach and Donna (Tim) Gibso n, and also by his brothers and sisters, T.J. McCann, Anice Judge, John McCann, Alice Wiseman, Gladys Kenny and numerous nieces and nephews. Raymond was predeceased by his wife, Delma Kellar, and siblings, Rita Doyle, Irene McCann, Josephine Egan, Go rdon McCann and Gregory McCann. The funeral was held August 15, 2003 and officiated by Father Carty of Elgin. Pallbearers were Meryl Ralph, Tim Gibson, Terry Leach, Jason Leach, Brett Gibson and Randy Hartley. (nee Macaulay) With profound sadness we announce the passing of our beautiful mother on August 23, 2003 after a lengthy illness. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick on March 17, 1923, Rose was predeceased by devoted husband Bill in 2000, brother Bennett and parents William and Cora Macaulay. Greatly and forever missed by daughters Diane Gooderham (sons Jamie and David), Gwen Koziol (husband Bill and daughters Paula and Michelle), and son Reay (wife Brenda and sons Bradley and Mitchell). Survived and lovingly remembered by sister Mary Oland Quistgaard and sisters-in-law Erma Macaulay and Gwen Clowes (Arthur). Loved by nephews John, Chris and Tom Oland, Kit Mellalieu, niece Andrea Smith and their families. And fondly remembered of course by Rose & Bill's dear friends, all of whom remain special to us. Mum's dazzling smile, beautiful voice and strong yet tender heart accompanied her from life as a girl and young woman growing up in Saint John, through five years spent in England during WW II after marrying Dad, to the happy years spent raising her family in Rothesay and later in Ottawa. Mum gave freely of her time to community activities and events and was a member of the I.O.D.E., a Brownie leader, and over the years held several jobs with the bank. She loved to sing, play hide and go seek, go blueberry picking on Spyglass Hill and beachcombing at Mispec, harvest sweet crunchy apples with Stit from the orchard on the Long Reach, attend our school plays, bake tortiere and sugar cookies at Christmas, and light the house with the soft glow of candles for special occasions. She was so proud of us, and with families of our own now, we grieve that she cannot be here to enjoy her grandchildren. We will cherish her memory forever. We give special thanks to the compassionate nursing staff at St. Vincent's Hospital in Ottawa for taking such good care of Mum over the past many years. In lieu of flowers, we suggest that donations be made to SCO Health Services Foundation, 43 Bruyere Street, Ottawa, Ontario K1N 5C8. Beth was loving, kind, energetic, spiritual, full of fun and a great inspiration to her family and friends, and she will be sorely missed by all who knew her. VELVA PLANTE (nee HANNAH) It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Velva Plante, on Thursday, August 28, 2003, at the age of 78 years. Mom was born in Toronto, ON, and moved to Manitoba with her family at a very young age. Mom worked for Goldberg's (furrier), when she met and married Ben Plante in 1946. While she was raising her family, Mom worked for a number of years at Eaton's mail order. Velva and Ben resided in St. Boniface until they moved to Cook's Creek in the early 1960s. When she quit Eaton's she remained at home and raised her three children. Velva was very proud of the accomplishments of her children and family. She also loved and spoke highly of her great Hazelridge and Cook's Creek's neighbours, especially Ruby, Walter, Frances, Tony and Nellie. She really loved a good neighbourly argument. She wrote proudly for the "Beaver" (Hazelridge and Cook's Creek area). She was nicknamed the community scoop and BS'er by Dad. Velva always tried to find the humour of everyday life. Velva is survived by her son Frederick (Pat); daughter Dawn (Wally); and son Kelly (Connie); grandchildren, Candace Berrie of Whitehorse, YK, Judith Berrie (Kevin) of Hazelridge and Suzanne (Paul) DeGagne of Winnipeg, Tammy and Lorne Plante of Cook's Creek, Mike (Maureen) and Teresa (Roland) of Springfield. Velva will be sadly missed by her sister-in-law Joanne Plante; brother-in-law Frank Roeland; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Mom was predeceased by her husband Ben earlier this year; her parents William and Pearl Hannah; and her brother Marvin and wife Sofie. YVONNE CHRISTINA VERMEULEN (nee DHAENE) December 21, 1922- August 29, 2003 It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She passed away peacefully early Friday morning at Middlechurch Nursing Home. Mom was predeceased by Dad (Robert) in 1999; and brother (George) 2002. Left to treasure her memories is daughter Jennifer Smith (Peter), grandchildren, Lauren and Brad, great-grandchildren, Christopher and Dakota; son Dennis Vermeulen (Ida), grandson Mark (Tanya), great-grandchildren, Gabrielle and Ireland; grandson Brent, great-grandchild Brooklyn; grandson Chad (Fawn); daughter Shirley Thibodeau (Robert), grandson Christopher, great-grandchild Taylor; grandsons, Shawn and Maurice. She will also be dearly missed by her sister Georgette Paqoni (Quinto) in California; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Yvonne was born and raised in St. Boniface on Tissot Street. In March 1945 she married Robert and moved to Clarence Avenue in Fort Garry, where the beginnings of their family were raised. They grew sugar beets and did some other light farming. Mom was a hard worker, always busy in the fields with no complaints. Later on as the children grew older Mom was employed as a housekeeper for Mr. Inmam of Inmam Motors and Dr. Skatlef. In 1965 Yvonne and family moved back to St. Boniface on Cherrier Street. She then became employed for Freed & Freed Clothing Company, where she worked until her retirement. Mom's priority was her family-she was always there for us and especially enjoyed her dinners out and time spent with her grandchildren. She was a kind, caring woman of great inner strength. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, cousin, aunt and friend and her feelings and concerns for others knew no bonds. She enjoyed reading, gardening, feeding the birds and shopping sprees and lunches in all the city malls. Mom was a terrific cook and always looked forward to Sunday afternoon dinners at her home with her family. Mom especially enjoyed her last trip to see her sister Georgette in California just before she got sick. A heart of gold stopped beating, Hard working hands went to rest, God took you home to prove to us, He only takes the best. Heartaches in this world are many, But losing you was worse than any It will be lonely here without you, We will miss you more each day, For life will not be the same for us, Since you've been called away. We will always remember the way you looked, The way you walked and smiled, All the things you did for us, Will be with us all the while, You always did your best, Your heart was true and tender You lived your life for those you loved, And those you loved will remember. FRETZ, Geraldine (Jerry) of Ridgeway, on Thursday, August 28, 2003 at the Port Colborne General Hospital in her 68th year. Beloved wife of Harold Fretz. Cherished grandmother of Danial and Griffin. Dear sister of Albert Martindale (Dorothy) of Pickering. Dear niece of Joy Pratt (Murray) of Niagara Falls and cousin of Ted Renshaw (Joanne) of Ridgeway and Darlene Spironello (Rick) of Niagara on the Lake. Dear sister-in-law of Reta & Rene Beauleau of Welland, Art Fretz of Ridgeway, Ted & Joy Fretz of St. Catharines and Merv & Sheila Fretz of Sherkston. Predeceased by her parents Ina & Ralph Martindale, brothers Edward & Omar Martindale and god-parents Glen & Winnie Benner. A loving & caring wife, mother, grandmother, aunt & friend to many, Jerry was a teacher with the Niagara South Board of Education, church organist, and volunteer for the Ridgeway Historical Museum. She touched the lives of many and will be sadly missed by all. The Fretz family will receive friends at the Armstrong Funeral Home, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne on Friday from 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the Armstrong Chapel on Saturday, August 30, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. Cremation will follow.

SAARI, Ossie - 1922-2003 - Passed away peacefully at the North Bay General Hospital - Scollard Site, on Thursday, August 28, 2003. Much loved husband of Dorla Saari (nee Nicholson). Dear father of Judi Suraci (husband Frank) of Mississauga, Donna Feradi of Calgary, Jeff and Kimberly both of British Columbia and very special niece Linda Nummela also of Calgary. Lovingly remembered by his six grandchildren Michael, Jana, Steven, Jeffery, Zoe and Shawna. Predeceased by his infant son Erik and sisters Toini Nummela and Raili Spencer. Ossie was a veteran of World War II, serving in the RCNVR. He was employed with the ONR for 45 years, retiring as Director of Purchasing in 1986. Ossie was a member of the Rotary Club of North Bay, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #23, as well as the North Bay Cardiac Fitness Club. Visitation will be held in the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME (across from City Hall) today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Royal Canadian Legion will have a Memorial Service in the Funeral Home on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be conducted by Reverend Jerry Slote, in the Martyn Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, August 31st, at 3:30 p.m. Cremation to follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations the Redeemer Lutheran Church, the North Bay General Hospital Foundation or the Cardiac Fitness Club would be appreciated by the family.
