McLEAN, JAMES WILLIAM D.V.M., M.D., F.R.C.S. (C) It is with great sadness that the family announce Bill's sudden death from a heart attack on Thursday, May 1, 2003. He was born May 4, 1931 in Oro Township, Ontario, the son of Edgerton and Marnie McLean, both of whom predeceased him, as did his sister, Edith Kerr of Alliston. He is survived by his wife, Emily and son John, both of Waterloo, and by his daughter, Heather Goodall and her husband Geoff of Williams Lake, B.C., and his daughter Jennifer McLean and her fiance Paul Norman of Vancouver, B.C., and by his son James and his wife Gwen of Boston, Mass. He is lovingly remembered by brothers, Joseph of Barrie, Donald of Elmvale, Allan of Orillia and John of British Columbia and by his sister Marjorie of Barrie. Cantor Kroll was a much loved and respected Hazzan, teacher and community leader in Montreal's Jewish community for over 50 years. He met life's challenges with optimism, fortitude, and a zeal for life. Truly admirable was his deep devotion to prayer and learning, and his special caring and love of family. Paisiblement, au Lakeridge Health Hospital à Oshawa, le mercredi des Cendres, 5 mars 2003, notre cher Gerry est retourné auprès de Dieu. Il laisse derrière lui sa chère épouse Joan (née Eastwood) et ses enfants adorés Richard (Susan), Michael (Gabrielle) et Jeannie (Peter), sa soeur Madeleine, ses 3 frères André, Denis et Serge, 9 petitsenfants, 3 arrière-petits-enfants et de nombreux neveux et nièces. Il était également le cher beau-frère de Beverly et Bill Eastwood. La famille désire exprimer ses sincères remerciements au Dr Deveau, au Dr Wilk et aux merveilleuses infirmières du 9e étage de l'hôpital pour leur sensibilité et leurs soins attentionnés, en plus des membres de la famille immédiate qui ont parcouru tellement de kilomètres pour prendre soin de leur père et de leur mère, avec générosité et amour. Selon les dernières volontés de Gerry, son corps a été remis à l'Université de Toronto pour fins de recherche. Ceux qui le désirent peuvent faire un don à la Société canadienne du cancer. Un service commémoratif à sa mémoire sera célébré le 31 mai à 14 h à l'église St. George's Memorial à Oshawa. Les cendres seront inhumées à une date ultérieure dans la Military Section du Beechwood Cemetery à Ottawa. CD MWO (Ret.) WWII, R-Regt-C, Dieppe POW, C-Int-C Peacefully at the Rideau Veterans Hospital on Friday, May 2, 2003, at the age of 82. Son of the late Noel and Kate Nicholson. Survived by his wife of 26 years, Esther (Edwards). Predeceased by his first wife Susannah Mary (Edwards). Survived by his children, Gwyn (Laura), James, Phillip (Catherine), and Kathleen Nicholson, all of Ottawa and his step-children, John, Allan (Moira) Loch, David (Eileen) Loch, and Rosann (Andy) Knox of Glasgow, Scotland, and 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother Peter (Florida) and predeceased by his brother Jack. Born in Scarborough, Ontario March 21, 1921, he attended Danforth Tech. He enlisted in the Royal Regiment of Canada in 1939 and served in Iceland and England before being taken prisoner on the Dieppe Raid. Upon repatriation, he returned to civilian life for a short time and continued military service in the Militia, before re-enlisting in the Regular force, at the time of Korea, in the Canadian Intelligence Corps. He served on many postings, including Germany during the Cold War era and completed his military career at the Mapping and Charting Establishment in 1972. During his life, he was active on numerous association, Mess and Legion Committees, including the Dieppe Pows Association. With many interests, and a consummate tinkerer, there wasn't anything that he couldn't put his hand or mind to, and was blessed with a long retirement, to do so. CHUBRA Jeannette Marie (nee Normandin) passed away peacefully on May 1, 2003 at age 77 years, after a long struggle with multiple myeloma. Predeceased by her parents and brother Louis Alphonse Rodrique, she is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Joseph Thomas; 3 daughters, Normandie, Rachel and Naomi; 6 grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Sephra, Sarah, Vanessa, Stuart and Jocelyn and her brother Leo-Paul Rodrigue. A lifelong teacher by passion and a student by choice, Jeannette proudly obtained her B.Ed. (Sec) from UBC in 1978, graduating with her eldest daughter. Her dedication to teaching and learning touched the minds and hearts of thousands of students she taught in the Vancouver area over her 45 year teaching career. Professionally she shared her leadership skills through her active participation in the BCTF, VESTA. and RTA and her strong community spirit benefited the CWL VSC and Our Lady of Sorrows Parish. Her subtle sense of humour tempered her effervescent personality and her loving nature was reflected in her unfailing faith in the essential goodness of her family, friends and students. With an intense passion for living and driven by boundless energy and generosity, throughout her life Jeannette always made time to open her door to provide a safe refuge, a meal, a clean bed, or just a chat and supportive hug to those in need. A devout Catholic dedicated teacher, true friend, a wife and Mother filled with unconditional love, she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. He also served as First Secretary in Belgrade, Ambassador to Korea, Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva and Ambassador to the UN Committee on Disarmament. (nee Ivall) It is with great sadness that we announce that Florence Purdy passed away while at the CH de Papineau, Buckingham, on Thursday, May 1, 2003 at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her husband Robert John Purdy, her daughter Polly and her son Evan. Loving mother of Viola Arnold. Wonderful grandmother to 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Dear sister of Robina Laviolette. Also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. She is resting at the Cadieux Funeral Home, 322 Principale Street, Buckingham, Quebec, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 3, 2003, at Gore United Church in Thurso, Quebec, followed by burial at the parish cemetery.
