STEDMAN, Beatrice Edith (Curry) In loving memory of Beatrice Edith (Curry) Stedman, 85 years, who passed away Friday morning, March 21st, 2003 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph’s Health Centre. Born in Chapleau where she married Bill in 1941. She graduated a Registered Nurse and worked a number of years at Lady Minto Hospital in Chapleau. Beatrice was a dedicated and devoted member of St. Peter’s United Church and U.C.W. She was a member of the Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society. She enjoyed bridge, knitting and was a wonderful baker. Beatrice was a strong willed woman who loved life. She had a kind and caring way and will be remembered as "Auntie Bea" in the neighbourhood Beloved wife of William "Bill" Stedman predeceased 1985. ( Major Retired) (Veteran of WWII and Korean War) In hospital, Pembroke, on Thursday, March 20, 2003 in his 79th year. Charlie "Chuck" Carswell of Petawawa, beloved husband of the late Rose Carswell. Dear father of Bill Carswell (wife Arlene), North Bay; Kyle Wicharuk (husband Ron), Petawawa; and Cyndy Grant (husband Doug), Port McNeill, B.C. Grandfather to Amy, Becky, and Cherie Carswell; Ian and Peter Wicharuk; and Cameron Grant. Brother to Audrey Neuman (late husband Walter), Bancroft; and Eunice Williams (late husband Jack), Bancroft. Predeceased by brothers Dave, Lawrence, Robert and sister Amy Donaldson. Survived by sisters-in-law Loretto Carswell, New York, New York; and Muriel Carswell, Kingston. Also survived by many devoted nieces and nephews. Son of the late Billy and Annie Carswell. Also lovingly remembered by his mother-in-law Effie McCaw (late husband Bill), Brighton; and Catherine Smith (late husband Gordon), Perth Road. Chuck joined the Canadian Army in 1941 and served during WWII with the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders in Canada, England, Holland, and finally in Germany when the war ended in 1945. He remained in Germany as part of the occupation force until repatriation to Canada in 1946. After a brief stint on "civvy" street, Chuck re-joined the Army and served as an Intelligence Officer with the Royal Canadian Regiment during the Korean War. His post war military career involved service in Edmonton, Germany, Picton, Cyprus and Petawawa with the Canadian Guards. Upon retirement from the Army in 1973, Chuck worked at the Petawawa National Forestry Institute until his final retirement in 1983. Eli Bastarache 1913-2003 Eli Bastarache, 90, of Moncton Veteran's Center, formerly of Dieppe, passed away on Thursday, March 20th, 2003 at his residence. Born in Dieppe, NB, he was the son of the late Alyre and the late Evangeline (née: LeBlanc) Bastarache. He was retired from the Canadian Air Force, a member of the Dieppe Veterans Association and a parishioner of Ste. Thérèse Roman Catholic Church, Dieppe, NB. Mr. Bastarache is survived by his wife, Rita (née: Bourgeois); one daughter, Patricia (Don) Cronk of Newport, VT; one son, Jerry (Jo-Anne) of South Branch; three sisters, Dora Gosselin, Irene Comeau, both of Leominster and Rita Hebert of Moncton; four brothers, Yvon (Lorraine) of Moncton, Thomas (Patricia), George (Holly), both of Dieppe and Réné (Jeanne) of Leominster, Mass; seven grandchildren, one great grandchild; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one son, Edgar; three sisters, Marie, Therese, Jeannette and by three brothers, Alban, Edgar and Francois. Guy Daniel Gautreau MEMRAMCOOK, NB-Guy Daniel Gautreau, 45, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with throat cancer. Born on April 13, 1957, he was the son of the late Blair Gautreau and the late Hermine Gautreau. He will be sadly missed and forever remembered by his loving family and countless friends. He is survived by his wife, Pauline (LeBlanc) Gautreau; as well as two step-daugthers, Lynn LeBlanc and Lisa LeBlanc. He also leaves behind his sister, Fernande (Donald) LeBlanc; his niece Melanie and his nephew Rene all of Gautreau Village, as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Before being diagnosed with cancer, he was employed as a courier driver for L & S Courier Inc. His wonderful sense of humour and his infectious smile will be remembered forever by those who knew and loved him. His willingness to lend a hand to those in need will never be forgotten. Durant toute sa vie elle fut une résidente de Sturgeon Falls o? elle éleva six enfants, Marie-Jeanne (Henri Lussier) de St. Grégoire de QC., Iréne (Conrad Grenier) de Terrace Bay, Lorraine (Gilles Bazinet) de Repentigny de QC., Roméo (Simon Ducharme) de Sturgeon Falls, Germain (Micheline Lachance) de Trois-Rivières, QC., et Lucienne (Rodolphe Lalonde) de Val Caron. Chère soeur de Clémentine Levac (feu Albert). Prédécédée par ses parents, Moise Chartrand et Cécile (née Lafrance), par quatres frères, Joseph, Cyprien, Philippe et Alfred ainsi que par quatres soeurs, Maria Gauthier, Angélina Levac, Emma Gareau et Anna Chartrand. Elle sera toujours dans la mémoire de ses 20 petits-enfants et ses 34 arrières-petits-enfants. Aurore était une femême dévouée au Seigneur en qui elle trouvait son réconfort. Pour une grande partie de sa vie, elle participa à la célébration eucharistique du dimanche matin à la Paroisse Sacré Coeur et tout dernièrement, à la Chapelle, Au Château. Une femême qui prenait sa famille à coeur, Aurore laisse des souvenirs inoubliables à ses enfants qu’elle aimait d’un amour si tendre. She leaves to cherish her memory, daughter Sheila and her husband Larry Chapman; grandsons, Michael and Mark (Krista); son Darryl and Linda; grandchildren, Jason and Letitia and great-grandchildren, Austin and Jayden; her brothers, Stan Reavie (Shirley) of Arborfield, SK, Ken Reavie (Lita) of Delta, BC, Dean Reavie (Marge) of Newport Beach, California, numerous nieces and nephews who all loved her dearly. Marjorie had a great interest in sports all her life. She was a member of Niakwa Country Club for 31 years, a Blue Bomber season ticket holder for over 30 years and bowled with the Niakwa Ladies League. She was an avid fan of her grandchildren's many sporting activities. Marjorie was a kind and caring person having volunteered countless hours with the St. Philip's Ladies Auxillary, the St. Boniface Hospital Ladies Auxillary and many years with the Seniors of Norwood Community Club. Not being blessed with the greatest health, Marjorie had a marvellous positive attitude and never complained about a thing. During her short stay at the St. Boniface Hospital, Marjorie mentioned several times "I've got the best care anyone could want". Thank you to the doctors and nurses on A-5 for treating her with such compassion and respect. A funeral service celebrating Marjorie's life will be held on Monday, March 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Philip's Anglican Church, 240 Tache Ave. by Rev. Gordon Shields. Normand J. Saulnier 1947-2003 Normand Saulnier, 55, of Mandeville St, Dieppe, passed away suddenly at the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Hospital on Thursday, March 20, 2003. Born in Moncton on April 17, 1947, he was the eldest son of William and Annette (LeBlanc) Saulnier. Prior to his retirement, Normand worked in the composing room of Moncton Publishing for 30 years. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife Deborah (Hetherington) Saulnier; his daughter, Renelle Girouard (Dr. Allain) of St. Augustine, FL; two brothers, Paul-Emile (Terry) of Ottawa and Bernie (Dorine) of Saint John; two granddaughters, Sophie and Brielle; a former wife, Marcia Currie of Moncton; as well as several nieces and nephews. In keeping with Normand's wishes there will be no visitation. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Ste. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, Dieppe, on Monday, March 24 at 11:00 AM. On March 19, 2003, Jane Kirk (nee Moran) of Edmonton, formerly of Montreal passed away at the age of seventy-seven years. Jane joins her husband of 50 years Alfred who left us in 1999. Jane is survived by her daughters Donna (Guy) Mersereau of Edmonton and Dorothy (Ed Gunther) of Vargas Island, B.C.; and two grandchildren, Katherine and Erin Mersereau (David Campbell) as well as her brothers James Moran (Eileen) of Calgary; Gerald Moran of Laval, and Paddy Moran (Margaret) of Montreal. She we predeceased by her brother Eric. Jane and Al lived in Montreal where she was very active in bowling, knitting and social activities with a wide circle of friends. In 1980, Al retired, and in 1988, she and Al moved to Edmonton to be closer to their grandchildren. They thrived in Edmonton in Edmonton with a new circle of friends and much activity at the Strathcona Legion and several bowling leages. Jane was devoted to her children and had a passion for sewing and needlework. She combined these into a wonderful stream of needlework wall coverings and mittens and hats. She loved reading and watching curling on TV; visiting her friends and family and regular Sunday calls to those out of town, followed by dinner at Donna's. Friends were a highlight of her life and special mention must be made of Aafke, Lois, Nanette and Bernie who meant so much to her. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so on Monday, March 24, 2003 between 7 and 9 p.m. at Hainstock's Funeral Home, 9810-34 Avenue, telephone 780-440-2999. CLARKE, Donald William Passed away at Kingston on March 20th, 2003 at the age of 78. He will be sadly missed by Audrey, his loving wife of 57 years. Don was predeceased by his daughter Sharon (Dale) and his brother Lloyd (Anne) and is survived by hissons Mark, Matthew (Nancy), daughter Melinda (Peter), three grandchildren, Jason, Madison, and Nathaniel, sisters Jeanne (Eric), Joan (Jim) and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was born in Orillia, Ontario and at the age of 18 joined the RCAF wherehe served his country during World War II. After the war, he had a distinguished flying career which lasted 40 years until his retirement in 1983. His years as a Pilot were spent with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines followed by the corporate aircraft division of Quebec Cartier Mining Company, one of Canada's largest iron ore producers situated in northern Quebec. He was a wonderful husband and a terrific family man; his sense of humour and his generosity will be greatly missed. Our father lived a fulland wonderful life, and as he would often say, you live only once, but if you do it right, once is enough. We think he did it right. We love you and miss you. Special thanks to the nurses and staff of Connell 10 at the Kingston General Hospital for their caring and compassion. Died in a skiing accident at Westcastle, Alberta on March 15, 2003. Beloved husband of Ineke (Boon), devoted father of Toby, Leonard, Noah (Dawn), and Eli (Dianna), proud grandfather of Zoey, Mark and Paul, devoted brother of Judith Lermer Crawley and Bram (Dorothee Logan), loving cousin to Debra, David and Shelley Reed, Sam and Betty Berliner, Naomi Tencer Braverman and brother-in-law to Mark (Edna) and Hans (Anne Weber) Boon. Born in Poland October 18, 1939 while Mania and Arthur fled the Nazi invasion, grew up in Montreal, attended M.I.T.(BA), Univ. of Pennsylvania, McGill(M.A., PhD) and London School of Economics. He taught at several Canadian universities (Guelph, Concordia, U.B.C., Waterloo) before becoming Senior Economist, Economic Council of Canada and later a Director in the Bureau of Competition Policy in the Department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs in Ottawa. In 1980, George was invited to development the Department of Management at the University of Lethbridge; as founding Dean, until his retirement in 1997, he guided the program with enthusiasm and innovation to its present position as the largest undergraduate management institution in Alberta. After retirement, he continued his work as a consultant specializing in large Canadian corporate mergers and taught in Indiana, Prague and Switerzerland and via internet courses. Happiest when he was skiing friends and family, George loved to sit around the table at the Westcastle cabin sharing food, stories and laughter. George touched the lives of many people. He was known widely by friends and colleagues for his vitality, intelligence and generosity. His wife, family and friends will miss him dearly. BIRD, Joyce, Died after a long illness at Linhaven on Friday, March 21, 2003 in her 72nd year. Dear daughter of the late Captain Les and Muriel Bird. Dear sister of Bill. She is also survived by her aunt Rose Matthews in California; cousins Paul Matthews and Ron Gfell, also of California, Richard Perry in Colorado, Les Armstrong, Lee Armstrong, Lawrence Armstrong, Tanis Sloat and Dick Meunier, all of the Kitchener-Waterloo area. Joyce was owner of Global Theatrical Supplies, a former Girl Guide leader, a member of Garden City Production, a Parade Marshall, was involved with the St. Catharines Winter Club and the Folk Arts Festival.
