MARIE JEANNE d'ARC FONTAINE Marie Jeanne est passee de cette vie a sa demeure eternelle le 14 mars 2003. Nee le 19 decembre 1920, elle vecut sa vie a Saint-Boniface sauf qu'elle passa quelques annees au Quebec. Elle fut precedee par ses parents et son frere Jean. Elle laisse dans le deuil, son frere Rosaire, sa soeur Rose Anna ainsi que plusieurs nieces et neveux. Elle s'est toujurs tenue au courant de ce qui se passait dans le monde autour d'elle et au loin, avec l'aide de son appareil electronique de vision pour les aveugles. Son savoir faire comme jardiniere, ne cessait jamais de surprendre ses voisins et voisines. Elle jouissait enormement de ses soirees de danse chaque semaine avec ses amis du C.N.I.B. Les Peres Blancs Missionnaires d'Afrique ainsi que le C.N.I.B. ont ete les beneficiaires de ses oeuvres de charite au cours de sa vie. Les prieres seront recitees a 19h00 le vendredi 21 mars 2003 au Salon mortuaire Desjardins, 357, rue Des Meurons. La Messe de la Resurrection sera celebree par le Rev. Pere Alphonse Bongo, le samedi 22 mars a 10h00 en la Cathedrale de Saint-Boniface. L'inhumation aura lieu au Cimetiere de Glen Lawn. Une reception suivra au Salon mortuaire Desjardins. Born on December 19, 1920, she resided in St. Boniface most of her life, except for the few years spent in Quebec. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Jean. She is survived by her brother Rosaire and sister Rose Anna, numerous nieces and nephews. In spite of her failing eyesight, she kept herself up to date on current, local and international events with the use of her electronic reading machine for the blind. She was an eager gardener, constantly surprising her neighbours with her horticultural abilities. Right up to the time of her demise, she enjoyed her line-dance soirees with her friends at the Institute for the Blind. The White Fathers as well as the Institute for the Blind were the beneficiaries of the major part of her life's savings. Prayers will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 21 at Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 Des Meurons St. Funeral mass, presided by Rev. Fr. Alphonse Bongo will held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 22 in the St. Boniface Cathedral. Interment will take place at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. Sadly, and with overwhelming grief we announce the passing of dear Ben at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, Tuesday afternoon, March 18th, surrounded by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Doris, and family. Survived by his brother Wim (Netty), sisters Marian (Kees) of the Netherlands, Inge (Han) of Virginia, Anke (Cris) of New York, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law of Newfoundland and many nieces and nephews and friends in the Netherlands, USA, Australia and Canada. Predeceased by his parents Wim and Anna Vriezen of Amsterdam and twin brother John. Ben's career in the burgeoning computer industry included the airlines which awakened a lifelong love of travel and adventure. His later career as a specialist in defence software initiated a lively and intelligent relationship with the world of computerization which he continued as a beloved hobby in his retirement. He embraced many interests including sailing, reading and collecting books, the arts, history, politics and accumulated a prodigious knowledge of Winston Churchill and his era. Ben was a member of the Dutch-Canadian Society and the International Churchill Society. He was fascinated by the natural world and nurtured a keen enjoyment of the blessings of life. His quiet faith was a wellspring of joy and greatly enhanced his outlook on life. Ben's circle of friends and relations spanned the globe and remained very close to his heart throughout his life. His great humour, hospitality and conviviality will be sorely missed. A long-time resident of Sandy Hill and St. Joseph's Parish, Kevin was a loyal friend to many, a source of boundless good will and a fiercely partisan Notre Dame football fan. Predeceased by his wife Evelyn McCabe and sister Noreen Hawley CND. Kevin was a dear father to Marilyn (Paul Smith) of Mississauga, Sheila of Ottawa, Brian (Coreen McGrath) of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, and Brendan (Margo Beres) of Ottawa. PELCHAT, Joseph Gerard W. (Gerry) Passed away on March 16, 2003 at the age of 79 at the Brooks Health Centre, Brooks, Alberta. He is survived by wife Ingrid of Brooks, five sons, five stepchildren, 21 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Gerry was born in Pontiex, SK on June 16, 1923, one of 11 children born to Louis and Aurore Pelchat. He was active in the Brooks community and before his retirement in 1983 he was Superintendent and Head of the Wildlife Research Centre in Brooks. Born in Nestorville, she married Weldon in Sudbury in 1946. She lived for many years in Thessalon and Sudbury. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Church and U.C.W. In her younger days, she was active in fishing, snowmobiling and square dancing. Mary enjoyed swimming, tending to her house plants and especially spending time at her camp on Lake Nepawassi. She volunteered for many years in Thessalon with the Arthritis Society. Beloved wife of Weldon Ashick predeceased 1994. Loving mother of Shirley of Sault Ste. Marie, baby Arthur predeceased, Sheldon predeceased 1990, Joan of Sudbury and Sherry (husband Nelson Ferlotte) of Val Caron. Cherished grandmother of Jason, Jonathon and Jeffrey. Dear daughter of Richard "Dick" and Grace Munroe both predeceased. LESLIE S. ‘LES’ PATERSON Leslie S. “Les” Paterson, of Scarborough, Ont., formerly of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away peacefully at 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at Providence Centre in Scarborough. He was born June 5, 1915 to the late John and Clara Paterson in Kenora, Ont., where he received his early education and began his life’s work with the Kenora Paper Mills, Ltd. He eventually transferred to Fort Frances with Mando and Boise Cascade Paper. Having served them for 40 years, he retired in 1980. Les had enlisted in World War II and served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a rear gunner and with #38 Squadron Royal Air Force, in North Africa and the Middle East. At war’s end, he received his honourable discharge and transferred to the R.C.A.F. Reserve in 1945. Enrolling in the University of Toronto in 1946, he met and married Ethel Message on Dec. 22, 1951 and together upon graduation, they took up residence in Fort Frances. Les’ greatest interests were gardening, golf, curling, and bird-watching. He was a past member of the American Ornithologists’ Union and the Ottawa Field Naturalists, and was a long-time member of the Federation of Ontario Naturalists. Les’ proudest moments were spending time with his family, whom he loved dearly. Les is survived by daughter, Wendy (Rhys) of Scarborough, Ont.; son, Stewart and friend (Brenda) of Thunder Bay, Ont.; brother, Jack of Vancouver, B.C.; sister-in-law, Christine of Southampton, Ont.; former daughter-in-law, Vivian of Thunder Bay, Ont.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel, in March, 1999; brother, Bruce; and sister, Audrey. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. An announcement will be made.

GALLANT, Vernon Peter "Nick" The death occurred at his home in Oyster Bed Bridge on Tuesday, March 18, 2003, of Vernon Peter "Nick" Gallant, age 72.
