BÉRARD, Mgr Wilfrid, c.s.s. À Saint-Hyacinthe, le 28 janvier 2003, à l'âge de 78 ans, est décédé Mgr Wilfrid Bérard, prêtre retraité du diocèse de Saint-Hyacinthe. Né le 25 février 1924 à Berthierville, fils de Denis Bérard et d'Eva Lacourse, il a été ordonné prêtre le 3 juin 1950. D'abord auxiliaire et professeur au Séminaire de Saint-Hyacinthe et au Collège Mgr Decelles de Sorel, Mgr Bérard a été vicaire à Acton Vale, curé à Saint-Alphonse-de-Granby, Roxton Pond, Saint-Pie et Saint-Pierre-de-Sorel. Il laisse dans le deuil un frère, Raynald Bérard et son épouse Rita Cournoyer, une belle-soeur, Rose Garceau épouse de feu Gilles Bérard, neveux, nièces, parents et amis. Exposé au:Séminaire de St-Hyacinthe 650, Girouard Est, St-Hyacinthe le jeudi 30 janvier 2003, de 14 h à 17 h et de 19 h à 22 h. MANGAN, CLARENCE – Des funérailles ont eu lieu le 1er février, à 14 heures en après-midi, à l'église St-Patrick de Kapuskasing, pour Clarence Mangan, domicilié à Kapuskasing, décédé le 29 janvier 2003, à l'âge de 91 ans, à l'hôpital Sensenbrenner de Kapuskasing. Il était né le 18 octobre 1911 à Douglas, Ontario. Au moment de sa retraite en 1970, il était commis de métier dans le domaine des pâtes et papier. Membre des Chevaliers de Colomb 4e degré, il a été Grand Chevalier dans le passé ainsi que Maître et Député de district. Il aimait la chasse et la pêche comme passe-temps. Il fut précédé dans la mort par son épouse Juliana, 5 frères : James, William, Tom, Jack et Norman. Il laisse dans le deuil 2 fils : James (Gertrude) Mangan de Kapuskasing, John (Cynthia) Mangan de Prince George, BC; 2 soeurs : Soeur Macrina de Pembroke, Margarite Burke de Pembroke; 4 petits-enfants : Danelle, Alain, Déanne, James Mangan. Le père Fernand Villeneuve a conduit le service funèbre. L'inhumation a suivi au cimetière de Kapuskasing. La famille apprécierait des dons à la Fondation ontarienne des maladies du coeur.Clarence Mangan, 217-55 Cedar St., Kapuskasing, died at Sensenbrenner Hospital on Jan. 29, 2003. He was 91 years-old. Mr. Mangan was born Oct. 18, 1911 in Douglas. He worked as a clerk for Spruce Falls Pulp and Paper until retiring in 1970. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus fourth degree and held the position in the past as Grand Knight, Master and District Deputy; and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Mangan was predeceased by his wife Juliana, and brother James, William, Tom, Jack and Norman. He is survived by sons James (Gertrude) of Kapuskasing and John (Cynthia) of Prince George, British Columbia. Also surviving are sisters Sister Macrina and Margarite Burke, both of Pembroke, and grandchildren Danelle, Alain, Déanne and James Mangan. Rev. Fernand Villeneuve directed the funeral service St. Patrick’s Church. Mr. Mangan will be interred at the Kapuskasing Cemetery.

Gaston Brixhe, Lot 26, Concession 9, Obrien Township, died at the Timmins and District Hospital Jan. 31, 2003. He was 83 years-old. Mr. Brixhe was born in Belgium on Nov. 30, 1919 and worked was a farmer. He enjoyed reading and listening to French and classical music. Mr. Brixhe was predeceased by his parents and brother Ywan. He is survived brothers Lucien of Belgium, Joseph of Kapuskasing, Marcel of Port Colborne, George of Gatineau and René of Ottawa and sister Maggy Cormeau of Belgium. Cremation took place at Hillcrest Crematorium and there will be no service.

Sarah Pitre 1916 - 2003 Sarah Pitre, 86, of Dieppe, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2003 at the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Hospital. Born in Rogersville, she was the daughter of the late Emanuel and the late Obéline (née: Gallant) Arsenault. She was a parishioner of Ste. Thérèse Roman Catholic Church, Dieppe, NB. She is survived by three sisters, Thérèse (Fred) Daigle of Moncton, Marie (late John) Cormier and Aurelie (Albert) Martin, both of Dieppe; as well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Pitre was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred; three sisters, Elise, Rosé and Adeline; and a brother, Emile. Visitation will be held from the Chartersville Funeral Home, 363 Amirault Street, Dieppe, 857-1901, on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 from 7 to 9 pm and also on Thursday from 10 am until time of departure. Funeral Mass will be celebrated from Ste.Thérèse Roman Catholic Church, Dieppe, on Thursday, February 6, 2003 at 11 am. Interment in NotreDame du Calvaire Cemetery, Dieppe, NB.

David Robichaud 1913-2003 ST. LOUIS DE KENT, NB - David Robichaud, 89, husband of Emerise (Martin) Robichau, passed away Monday, February 3, 2003 at the Stella Maris Hospital, Ste. Anne de Kent, after a lengthly illness. Born in Cap St. Louis, NB, he was the son of the late Levi and Marie (Vautour) Robichaud. David was a retired fisherman and attended St. Louis des Francais Roman Catholic Church, St. Louis de Kent. He is survived by his wife, Emerise Robichaud; two daughters, Odette Martin (Donald), Valdine Robichaud; one son, Emile Robichaud; two sisters, Emerise Doucet (Late Pat), all from St. Louis de Kent, Stella Robichaud, Ontario; two grandchildren, Nathalie Chevarie (Eric) and Sonia Martin (Rene); four great grandchildren, Pascal, Nikki, Maggie and Brianna. BERTHE CECILE BARKER (nee HEBERT) March 16, 1919-February 2, 2003 The family of Berthe Barker sadly announces her passing on Sunday, February 2, 2003, at the Deer Lodge Centre following a lengthy illness, at the age of 83. Berthe was predeceased by her husband Eric; sister Germaine; brothers, Georges, Claude and Roger. Jill was predeceased by her mother Ruth Chamberlain and her sister-in-law Cathy Begin. Jill leaves to mourn her passing, her beloved husband Lloyd and daughter Andrea. VICTOR OMER DAVID 1920-2003 Peacefully on Friday, January 31, 2003 our beloved father, grandfather (Papere) and great-grandfather passed away in his sleep at the St. Boniface Hospital. Victor leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Rodney (Rowney) and Bruce (Tammy); his daughters, Patricia Dunne (Leo) and Lori David; his grandchildren, Shane, Vicky, Kelly, Le Ann and Samantha; great-grandchildren Veronica, Jessica and Keifer. He is also survived by sisters, Laurentine Fournier and Lorette Zalondek (Dave); and two sisters-in-law, Yvette and Sylvia, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives from the Lac Du Bonnet area and many friends. He was predeceased by his wife Ethel in 1988, as well as both his parents, a sister and three brothers. Dad was born in Carruthers, SK and moved to Lac Du Bonnet as a child. He served our country in the Second World War with PPCLI. It was during this time in the war that he met and married his wife Ethel. He was a legion member for 35 years. In Lac Du Bonnet he was employed by the town for 30 years. After moving to Winnipeg he was employed at Middlechurch Nursing Home for 11 years. Victor was a man of many words. His long stories were legendary. Until his illness, he loved to take drives all around the province, enjoyed attending fiddling contests and he also had a love of horses. In the last few years Victor has enjoyed the company of a special friend, Barb Woodward, who made him very happy, also a dear friend Alex. The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Boniface Hospital in 4E and Dr. Norandis for their loving care given to Victor. LeBLANC, Leo Arthur On the morning of February 2, 2003 Leo passed away at home after a long fight with cancer. Leo was born on April 8th, 1917 in La Pas, Manitoba. He leaves to mourn Regina his wife of 49 years and his daughter Tracy Brown (Gord) and son Mark. Leo was a loving husband and father. Leo went to school in Edmonton and in 1941 joined the RCAF as an Aviator until1947. In 1947 Leo started an air charter company in the Canadian Arctic. In 1951 Leo rejoined the RCAF as a pilot instructor stationed in Trenton. In 1953 was transferred to Penhold, Alberta. He then transferred to France in 1956 where he retired in 1961. After retirement from the RCAF he lived in Edmonton and owned and operated a furniture refinishing business until his 65th birthday. He loved to spend time with his family and enjoyed Horse Shoeing and was a keen student and researcher of UFO's. Another favorite pastime was feeding and studying the birds common to Alberta. The family would like to thank Dr. Friedman and Dr. Marvin Wiesler for their wonderful care and compassion. Also a special thanks to Shauna and the homecare staff. She was completely devoted to her church, family and friends. Her generosity of herself and possessions were undeniable. ALBERT HENRI JOSEPH PELLAND Peacefully on February 1, 2003, at 85 years of age, Albert Henri Joseph Pelland passed away, with his loving wife Georgianna and family at his side. Albert is survived by eight of his nine children, Lucille (Denis), Henri (Irene), Terri, Armand (Helen), Paul (Jean), Maurice (Dolores), Aline (Gilbert), Jackie (Claude). He is also survived by his only sister Rita L'Hereux and many, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. By the grace of God, Albert is now in the company of his son and our Angel, Bertrand. Albert was born in Silver Plains on April 21, 1917. He was the eighth child of Theodore and Albina Pelland. He was predeceased by his brothers, Jean Baptiste, Adolphe, Emile, Cerile, Pierre, Andre, Paul, Arthur, Dave and Adrien. He came to St. Georges at the age of 23 to work as a farm hand and met his wife Nana. Shortly after they wed. Two months before his first child was born he was drafted into the Army where he was posted in Vernon, BC for for basic training. He was then stationed in Wainwright, AB, as a member of the PPCLI. He was then shipped overseas where he spent time in Holland and England. Upon his discharge from the Army, he returned to his wife and family who now resided in Powerview, MB. Albert spent the next 33 years of his life employed by Abitibi Paper Company. Upon his retirement, he spent every moment enjoying life to its fullest. He spent his retirement travelling with his "Nana" and special brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Precious memories were made on these trips... He travelled great distances to golf with friends and his brother Paul many times. Often he came home with trophies for his efforts. He also joined the local senior curling and bowling leagues in town. His love for the great outdoors was evident in the care he took of his yard and roses. He spent his healthy years fishing and hunting with friends and relatives. He was an avid believer in walking and could often be heard telling his girls, "never mind dieting, just start walking!" He was a Jack of all Trades and never refused to help anyone who came to him with something to be built or repaired. But most of all he is remembered for his great sense of humour, (which his grandchildren were usually the brunt of), his patience, his kindness and most of all his compassion for others. What a great example you have been for us Dad. May we always try to continue to set this example with our families and friends. You will never be forgotten, our memories of you will live on in all the good things that we do. Until we meet again.... Love, your children. EMILE VAN RAES My dear husband "Van" passed away February 2, 2003 at Peterborough Regional Health Centre after four years of failing health. Born Jean Emile Auguste Van Raes on October 12, 1920 to Jean Van Raes and Josephine Dandurand. "Van" (as he was known) grew up and lived in St. Vital and St. Boniface most of his life. Emile is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife and best friend Floris (Ferguson) of over 34 years. His only son David Ferguson Van Raes (Ginette), Pamela (Alan Reimer), Cheryl (Gerard Noonan), and Floris' daughter Marilyn (Jacob Van Dam). Also surviving are his sisters, Marie-Paule (Vivien DuBois) of France, and Louise (Frank Collins) of Burnaby, BC. Ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Emile was predeceased by his first wife Gloria DuQuesnay in 1968; his parents, Jean and Josephine Van Raes; his brother Rene; and his sister Cecile Hermary. On September 2, 1939 at the age of 18, Emile joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers, as news of the Second World War broke out. He was first stationed in the Carribean and then sent to Hong Kong to fight alongside the British. The Winnipeg Grenadiers were subsequently posted to the island of Hong Kong. Their mission was to protect Hong Kong from foreign invasion. In one of the fiercest battles of the Second World War these troops were put under attack in an attempt to gain control of Hong Kong territories. These men were distinguished in this battle, but ultimately were overwhelmed and were captured by Japanese troops on Christmas Day in 1941. As a Prisoner of War, he was subjected to incredible hardships and intolerable conditions. The Hong Kong Veteran captives were some of the most harshly treated prisoners of any war. Following the surrender of Japan the surviving prisoners were released after having spent three years and eight months in captivity. After recuperating for a year, Emile went to work for the C.N.R.-Transcona Shops in Winnipeg. He retired after 35 years of service. In his retirement he enjoyed 23 years of cottage life at Falcon and Star Lake and 12 winters in Arizona. Throughout his life "Van" enjoyed many happy times with his many friends in the Belgian and French communities. "Van" was a member of the Belgium Club, Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 107 and the Hong Kong Veteran's Association. Today we lost a very honest, sincere, good living person. May God Bless and keep him. A memorial service will be held in Winnipeg in the near future and will be announced.

Ninety-three, of Dorval, Quebec, passed away Thursday, January 30, 2003 in La Strathmore, Dorval, Quebec. Born in Truro, N.S. he was the son of the late Charles O. Doyle and Isora (Bigelow) Doyle. Don grew up and was educated in Truro, graduating from the Truro Academy prior to attending Dalhousie and Kings University. Don taught at the Truro Academy until WWII where he served with the RCAF as a Flight Lieutenant, with the #10 British Squadron, in the North of England. After WWII, Don moved to Dorval, Quebec, where he taught history at Sir George Williams University in Montreal. Don was a well known pianist who delighted everyone with his musical talents. He played in numerous dance bands in the Truro area and also was an accompanist for various choirs in the Montreal area. Don is survived by sister, Marguerite Farmer, Halifax; dear friend and companion Trudy O'Brien, Dorval, Quebec, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Eleanor (Young) Doyle; sisters, Mabel Boyne; C. Elizabeth McCurdy and brother C. Elmer Doyle. Cremation has taken place. Committal will take place in the St. Andrew's United Church Cemetery, Port Daniel, Quebec at a later date. He was born in 1926 in Camini, Reggio Calabria, Italy, and emigrated to Sudbury, Ontario in 1963 with his wife Carmela Assunta and his four children. Dear son of Pasquale and Giuseppina, both predeceased. Beloved husband of Assunta (née Adavastro), whom he married in 1957. Cherished father of Giuseppina (predeceased 1975), Rosanna Battigelli (husband Nic), Pat (wife Loretta) and Cosimo (wife Anita), all of Sudbury. Dear brother of Giuseppe (Assunta, predeceased), Francesco (predeceased) (wife Teresa of Australia), Giovanni (wife Remy), Maria (John Prioletti, predeceased), and Stella (Cosimo Fonte, predeceased). Dear brother-in-law of Peter and Elsa Adavastro, Giuseppe and Esterina Adavastro, Francesco and Lina Adavastro, and predeceased by Concetta Micelotta. Beloved grandfather of Sarah, Jordan, Nathan, Alina, Nick and Samantha. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews in Sudbury, Italy, Australia and Germany. Nicola leaves a legacy of love and friendship to everyone who knew him. He worked at Inco at the Copper Cliff Smelter, until his retirement in 1988. His family was paramount to him, and his loyalty, hard work and love will never be forgotten by his wife and children. His kindness and generosity to friends and neighbours was well known; if he could help anyone in any way, he did, with true Christian spirit. He took pride in his yearly vegetable garden, whose bounty was enjoyed by his family and friends. He spent happy times with his friends hunting small game, smelt fishing, mushroom and blueberry picking. He was an excellent wine maker. He enjoyed his wife’s exceptional Southern Italian cooking. Hazel V. Stultz PETITCODIAC, NB - After a lengthy illness, Hazel V. Stultz (nee Killam), 88 years of age, of Petitcodiac, NB, formerly of Steeves Settlement, wife of the late Charles A. Stultz and previously the late Vernon L. Wilkins, went to be with her Lord on January 31, 2003 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Hazel was born in Killams Mills, NB, a daughter of the late Elmer and Elsie Killam and was an active member of the Havelock Wesleyan Church until she could no longer attend due to failing health. Besides her husbands, she was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Wilkins and brothers, Wilfred, Roy and Eldon Killam. She is survived by one son, Leslie (Rhea) Wilkins of Steeves Settlement; two daughters, Eileen (Melvin) Wilson of Lorneville and Joyce Wilkins of Saint John; one brother, Alfred (Cora) Killam of Lewis Mountain; sisters, Pearl Graves, Violet Steeves, Ethel (Ken) Bishop; and sister-in-law Doris Steeves, all of Petitcodiac; six grandchildren, Jeffery, Debbie, Bruce, Janet, Linda and Carolyn; nine great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at 2:00 pm from the Wesleyan Church, Havelock. Interment will take place in the Steeves Settlement Cemetery in the spring.
