Born December 11th, 1936- Proud member of the Knights of Columbus, Ercula Lepage unexpectedly passed away at Timmins and District Hospital at 4:45 pm on Sunday January 26th, 2003 at the age of 66 years old. He is survived by his wife Cécile Lepage; sons: Gérald (Sherryl) of Sudbury, Gilbert (Thérèse) of Timmins, Alec (Rejeanne) of Timmins and his daughter Brigitte (Jeff) of Timmins. Also survived by two brothers Germain (Cécile) of Toronto and Raoul. Predeceased by his son Claude, daughter Estelle, father Samuel, mother Bertha, sister Lucille and brother Rolland. Erk will be sadly missed by all his 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren and by his nieces and nephews. But mostly by his 3 grandchildren Mélanie, Lynne and Angèle Cyr who have lived with him for the past 7 years. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday January 29th, 2003 at 2:00 pm at Notre Dame de Lourdes Church. Interment at Timmins Memorial Cemetery. EVA LOUISE HINDS (Dupas) Peacefully, at the Foyer Valade Personal Care Home, Eva Louise Hinds passed away on January 27, 2003 at the age of 82. Eva was predeceased by her husband Mel in 1969; her beloved sisters, Alice, Antoinette, Therese, Amanda, Blanche, Rose, Agnes; and also her infant grandson Thomas Jordan Hinds. She is survived by her loving children, Tom, Sue, Linda (Josef), Mel (Sheila) and Bob (Barb); and her grandchildren, Lisa, Rochelle, Shannon, Angel, Peter, David, Ryan, Stephen, Ashley, and Matthew. Also left to cherish her memory are numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Eva's greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and she was affectionately known as "Granny" by them all. She was a feisty and independent lady and while she was able she loved to knit, read, garden and travel. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Fr. Patrick Morand for his pastoral care and also all the staff at Foyer Valade for their exceptional care and in particular, Carmelle, Donna, Helen and Jean. 2002-12-01 - Madeleine Laurin nee: Roy of Hearst back Funeral services for lifelong Hearst area resident Madeleine (née Roy) Laurin, 78, of 821 Alexandra St. were held Dec. 5, 2002. She died, Dec. 1, at Notre-Dame Hospital following a cardiac arrest. Born Sept. 17, 1924 in Jogues, she was a member of the Club soleil des aîné-e-s seniors club and hospital auxiliary, and volunteereed for many years at the Foyer des Pionniers Nursing Home. Described as a sociable, she enjoyed knitting and puzzles. She was predeceased by her parents Laura and Alcide Laurin of Hearst, brothers Hervé and Émile Laurin, a sister Cécile Lapointe, a son Fernand Laurin of Grand Bend, brothers-in-law Léo-Pold Gilbert and Hervé Laurin, both of Hearst, and daughter-in-law Annette D'Août. She leaves her husband Maurice Laurin of Hearst; daughters Carole (Sylvain) Bergeron, Nicole Laurin and Thérèse Laurin, all of Hearst, and sons Yvon (Maria) of Exeter, André (Betty) of Kingston, Jocelyn and Michel (Diane), all of Hearst, and Gabriel (June) Laurin of Arnprior. Also surviving are her sisters Laurette (Jean-Paul) Laurin, Pauline Laurin, and Béatrice Gilbert, all of Hearst, Annette (Gérard) Tremblay of Orleans, and Mariette (Laurent) Henry of Moonbeam, and brothers Maurice of Atikokan, Marcel of Manitoba, and Onézime Roy of Lévis, Que., and daughter-in-law Rose-Anger Laurin of Grand Bend. There are as well 15 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Rev. Rémi Lessard directed the morning service at Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral. Interment will be at the Sts Martyrs-Canadiens Cemetery in Jogues.

BERNARD HAROLD (PAT) BRANDRICK Bernard (Pat) Brandrick, 83, passed away peacefully at Atikokan General Hospital in Atikokan, Ont. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003. Bernard was born June 1, 1919 in Duck Lake, Sask. to Sarah and Ivan Brandrick. “Pat” worked at tourist camps on Lake of the Woods in his younger years, and later with carpenter crews in the Kenora, Ont. area. He also worked for “Dingwall Motors” as an outboard mechanic. Later, he started his own outboard shop by the name of “Pat’s Outboard,” and operated it until he and his wife retired from the business. Following their retirement, “Pat’s Outboard” continued under new ownership. After the passing of his wife, Hazel, in 1988, Pat continued living in Kenora until moving to Atikokan two years ago due to poor health. While residing there, he stayed with his brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Sylvia Brandrick. Pat is survived by one sister, Marie and husband, Arnold Haver, of Devlin, Ont.; three brothers, Eric Brandrick and Kenneth Brandrick, both of Devlin, Ont., and Henry Brandrick and wife, Sylvia, of Atikokan, Ont.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ont., with Rev. Frances Flook officiating. Interment will take place at a later date. Should family and friends so desire, donations may be made to the Atikokan General Hospital, 120 Dorothy St., Atikokan, Ont., P0T 1C0.

ALICE MYRTLE TORSETH Alice Myrtle Torseth (nee Hafdahl), 86, of International Falls, Mn., passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at Falls Memorial Hospital in International Falls. She was born Aug. 26, 1916 in Fairland, Mn. She grew up in Loman, Mn. and moved to International Falls in 1934. She worked at Pearson’s Bakery, and as cashier at Golden Rule, Piggly Wiggly, and Pamida. Alice was married July 28, 1938 to William Torseth Sr. She loved spending time with her family, baking, cooking, music, and taking care of her home. She also was a member of the First Lutheran Church. Alice was predeceased by her husband, William Torseth Sr., on July 20, 1989; her parents, Simon and Engebord (Olson) Hafdahl; four brothers, Roy, Walter, Kenneth, and Roland Hafdahl; and five sisters, Marian Pearson, Sylvia Kohlhase, Ella Blinsmon, Thelma Sawchuk, and Lillian Sarahan. She is survived by her son, William James (Linda) Torseth Jr. of International Falls, Mn.; daughter, Cynthia (Maurice) Herberg of Los Angeles, Calif.; three grandchildren, Trevor Torseth, Jeri Weitz, and Jason Julien; two step-grandchildren, Vicky Ilkka and Vince Kellsey; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gladys Palm and Opal Wagner, both of International Falls, Mn. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in International Falls, with Rev. Thomas Aitken officiating. ALBERT MARKLAND ‘MAC’ McKELVIE In loving memory of Albert Markland “Mac” McKelvie, 98, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, Fort Frances, Ont., who passed away Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances. Mac was born Aug. 14, 1904 in Fort Frances to Robert and Florence McKelvie. He was united in marriage to Doris Engebretsen in 1929. His life’s work centered around the local paper mill. He started at the bottom and worked his way up through the various responsibilities until his appointment as mill manager, retiring in 1968. He was a member of Granite, Chapter, and Ledger Preceptory Lodges of the Masonic Order; and a member of Khartum Temple and Border Shrine Club. He also served for many years on the board of management for the Masonic Building Association. Mac served with the board of education for eight years and also spent two years with the Boy Scouts when his boys were young. He was a member of St. John’s Anglican Church and served in various capacities on the Vestry Committee. Mac also belonged to the Kiwanis Club, served as president, chaired the Kiwanis Pension Draw, and served as Sunny Cove Camp treasurer and on any committee when asked. He was an ardent curler all his life. As well as having been president of the local curling club, he served on the board of management for 20 years, for 10 of which he was chairman of the board. He organized the 60-Plus Senior Curlers’ Association for Northwestern Ontario. Mac is survived by Doris, his wife of 74 years; sons, Robert and wife, Mary, of Ridgefield, Wash., and Fred and wife, Connie, of Fort Frances, Ont.; daughter-in-law, Donna McKelvie of Fort Frances, Ont.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandsons; and five great-granddaughters. He was predeceased by his son, Donald in 1989; and grandson, Jimmy in 1995. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Fr. Wayne McIntosh officiated, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances. Friends visited Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 from 7 until 8 p.m. at Green Funeral Home. A Masonic Granite Lodge #446 A.F. & A.M. memorial service was held at 7:30 p.m. Honourary pallbearers were Bruce Murray, Tom Kiddle, Bob Lidkea, Jim McLeod, Tom Yuill, Dave Hughes, and all of Mac’s family and friends. McEWAN, Fleurette (nee Roy) In loving memory of Fleurette (nee Roy) McEwan, 81 years, of McFarlane Lake, who passed away Monday afternoon, January 27th, 2003 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital-St. Joseph’s Health Centre. She was born in North Bay and married George McEwan in Dunnville in 1942, having celebrated their 60th anniversary this past summer with a wonderful party at their home surrounded by their loving family and many friends. A longtime and well respected McFarlane Lake resident Fleurette had been the administrative assistant to Fr. Philion at the Laurentian University Library retiring in 1974 with 14 years service. She had help start the University of Sudbury with the Jesuit priests. A devout Roman Catholic she attended St. Mathieu’s Church where she took an active leadership role in the various parish ministries including the church office and administration. A woman of faith she had been a dedicated member of the Legion of Mary. A strong supporter and hardworking volunteer for Catholic Charities she and her husband had raised significant monies from local bingos on a weekly basis for the past 20 years to help the less fortunate. At the age of 50 she learned to fly. She had a great love of animals having helped found the local SPCA in 1954. Fleurette was a founding member of secretary-treasurer of the Sudbury Chapter #56 Experimental Aircraft Association, executive member Flight 13 Canadian Owners Pilot Association H.S. Seaplane (Wilderness Flyers) Pilots Association. In 1973 she entered Great Burlington Centennial 2000 Mile Seaplane Race winning the women’s division. She was perennial winner at the Massey Fair with her jams & pickles. Fleurette was a most impressive person whose deep faith, love of life and committment to help others inspired all who knew her. Fleurette can echo the words of St Paul who near the end of his life said, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith". Beloved wife of George McEwan of Sudbury. Loving daughter of Victor and Ida (Langlois) Roy predeceased. Dear sister of Theodore of California, Charlie (wife Eve) of Burlington and the late Norma Sauve, Pearl Bryer, Simonne Young, Reina Rochon, Fernand, Gerald and George Roy all predeceased. Fondly remembered by many loving nieces, nephews and their families. Sadly missed by her canine buddy Britta. LEON DESILETS August 22, 1918-January 27, 2003 Peacefully at the St. Boniface Hospital with family at his side, he went to his eternal home. Leon was born in Elie and farmed until his retirement in 1976. In his youth, Leon enjoyed hockey, baseball and curling at a later age. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Army, Navy and Air Force. He was also a member of the Armed Forces in the last war. He is survived by four sisters, Cecile Leavenworth, Gilberte La Marre, Pauline Chabot and Stella Borrie; and by many nieces and nephews who will all miss the twinkle in his eyes and his wonderful sense of humour. He was predeceased by his parents, Donat and Pamela Desilets; two brothers, Emile and Marcel; and by two sisters, Fleurette Ayotte and Alice Desilets. Funeral mass will be celebrated in the Blessed Sacrament Church in Elie, MB on Thursday, January 30 at 2:00 p.m., preceded by Recitation of the Rosary at 1:30 p.m., with Fr. Albert Lafreniere officiating. Cremation to follow, with interment in the parish cemetery at a later date. COMEAU, Kathleen Florence "Kitty"-84, Tidal View Manor, Yarmouth and formerly of 3 Grantham St., Yarmouth, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2003, in the manor. Born September 26, 1918, in England, she was a daughter of the late John and Florence (Pierce) Robicheau. She was a homemaker. Surviving are daughters, Joan (Clifford) Hood, Elaine (Larry) Robicheau, both of Yarmouth; sister, Gwen Phillips (Ron), Chegoggin; brothers, John "Dicky" (Viola) Robicheau, William "Billy" Robicheau, both of Yarmouth; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, James Comeau; grandson, Samuel Clifford Hood; twin great-grandchildren, Kassidy and Kameron, both in infancy; sisters, Elisabeth "Betty", Isabell. MICHAUD, GISÈLE M. – Des funérailles ont eu lieu le 25 janvier, à 16 heures, à la cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Hearst, pour Gisèle Michaud, née Bérubé, domiciliée à Jogues, décédée le 21 janvier 2003, à l'âge de 63 ans, à Hearst, Ontario. Elle était née le 9 avril 1939, à Cabano dans le comté de Témiscouata, Québec. Elle habitait la région depuis 1965. Cuisinière de métier, elle était membre du Club Solo de Hearst. Elle fut précédée dans la mort par son époux Gérald en 1980. Elle laisse dans le deuil 3 fils : Allen, Danny, tous deux de Hearst et Lucien (Jocelyne) de Timmins; 1 fille : Mary-Line (Serge) Lapierre de Terrebonne; 2 soeurs : Huguette (Claude) Godbout de Hearst, Françoise (Paul-Émile) Tardif de St-Louis; 3 frères : Gaston (Lili) Bérubé de Montréal, Jeannot (feue Gisèle) de Cabano et André de Cabano ainsi que 3 petits-enfants : Jerry, Judy et Khona. GORHAM, JESSIE C. Jessie C. Gorham (Reid) of Fredericton, NB, passed away on January 26, 2003 at York Manor. Born in Cape Breton in 1913 and raised in Hampton, NB, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Margaret (MacInnis) Reid, wife of the late F. Stirling Gorham. An avid golfer, swimmer and sportswoman, she was also a past-president of the Capital Winter Club, Ladies Division. Jessie is survived by her son Richard (Mary); daughter Frankie Gillespie and grandchildren Linda Trail, Robert Gillespie (Bobi), Andrew (Holly) and David (Joanne); great grandchildren Robin, Dawson, Samuel and Spencer Gorham, Ben, Jeremy and Kari Gillespie, Zachary and Isaac Trail. Willard Daniel Lamey STELLARTON, NS - Willard Daniel Lamey, 76 of Kensington Avenue, Stellarton went peacefully to God surrounded by family and friends on Sunday, January 26, 2003. Born in Westville, he was a son of the late Alex and Catherine (Beaton) Lamey. He was raised in Westville, spending most of his life in Stellarton where he was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church. He served overseas during WW II with the Royal Canadian Navy. He was employed with the C.N.R. for some 38 years, first as a Brakeman and later on as Manager of the C.N. Employee Assistance Program from where he retired in 1986. He was a member of the Admiral Murray Branch of the Royal Canadian Naval Association, as well as being active in A.A. for over 50 years, the Pictou County Food Bank and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. He was also an avid skier. He is survived by a daughter, Pam (Jamie) Morrison, Stellarton; sons, Gerald MacCabe, Lacolle, Quebec, Dan (Rita), Miami, Florida, Dennis, Stellarton, Tom, Halifax; grandchildren, Daniel, Kelsey, Catherine, Jill, William, and Sarah Grace; brothers, Jim (June), Quebec, Ken (Mary), Riverview, N.B., Larry (Carol), Bayfield, Donnie (Connie), Charlottetown, Bernie (Keddy), New Glasgow, Leo (Glenda), Westville; sisters, Mary (Don) O'Conner, Truro, Celia Millan, Westville, Loretta MacLean, Hammonds Plains, Linda (Dave) Sorel, Brierly Brook, Liz Purcell, Hamilton; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Mary "Irene" Lamey; and a sister, Theresa. His remains will rest in the H. C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton for visiting from 7 to 9 pm Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Thursday. Funeral Mass will be held 11 am Friday from Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church with Father Patrick O'Neill officiating. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations in memory of Willard may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Pictou County Food Bank. Willard was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who gave willingly of himself to all who needed him. We will miss you Papa.

Lillian Hicks 1918 - 2003 Lillian Arsenault-Dube Hicks, of Moncton, passed away at Dr. GeorgesL. Dumont Hospital, surrounded by her family on Monday, January 27, 2003 at the age of 84 years. Born in Edmundston, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Georgieanna (Soucy) Arsenault. Lillian was a homemaker, having worked for The T. Eaton Company in Edmundston prior to her marriage. She is survived by one daughter Verena (Rodrique) Basque of McKees Mills; two sons, Edward (Viola) Hicks of Bouctouche and Lester (Denise) Hicks of Wood Point, NB; three sisters, Leaster Pincombe of Sept Isles, PQ, Loula Sawyer of Reading, Mass, and Mildred Higinbotham of South Lynnfield, Mass; one uncle, Romeo Arsenault of New York; six grandchildren, Victoria "Vicky", Robert "Bobby", Michelle, Paul, Rejean, and Renee; two great grandchildren, Jason and Kevin; and by several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Vernon Hicks in 1986; step-father Edward Dube; sister, Evelyn Head; brother Melford and by grandchild Verena Hicks. HERMAN LAFRENIERE Peacefully, after a courageous battle with cancer, Herman passed away Sunday, January 26, 2003, at the age of 73. Herman was predeceased by his wife Audrey (Adam); his parents, Yvonne Cote and Thomas Lafreniere; his three brothers, Leo, Norbert and Bertrand; as well as his sister Stella. He is survived by his son Donald and wife Judy of Sarasota, FL; and daughter Nicole Purdy and husband Mark of Winnipeg. He also leaves to mourn his three grandsons, James, Kyle and Donald, who were the light of his life. He will be dearly missed by his brothers, Gilbert (Alice), Marc (Claire) and Remi (Pat); and sisters, Annette (Adolphe) Leclaire, Terry Delaquis, and Sr. Laurie Lafreniere; as well as a sister-in-law Irene Lafreniere. Many nieces and nephews, as well as many good friends will also miss him. Herman was born April 6, 1929 in St. Leon, MB. He moved to Winnipeg and worked for Westeel Rosco for 37 years. He had many friends from the cottage at Falcon Lake, and from Weslaco, Texas, where he and Audrey spent the last several winters. Also from numerous club affiliations such as The Manitoba Wildlife Association, The Manitoba Game and Fish Association, The Big Game Trophy Association, The Whiteshell Cottage Owners Association, the Fort Whyte Nature Centre, the Shuffleboard Club, and the carving club in Texas, and many more, too numerous to mention. Many thanks to the staff at the St. Boniface Palliative Care Ward for their caring and compassion in Herman's final days. A memorial mass celebrating Herman's life will be held Thursday, January 30 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Timothy's Parish, 135 John Forsyth Rd., with Fr. Gerry Ward officiating. Peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief and courageous battle with Leukemia, on Monday, January 27, 2003 at the age of 71 years. Loving father of Colette (Randy) Corston, Ginette (Denis) Desbois, Yves (Jasmine) Sabourin, Micheline (Marc) Wafer, Carole (Gilles) Bégin, Denise Sabourin, Sylvie (Yves Bélanger) Sabourin, Renée (Kari) Niemi and Michel Sabourin. Also left to mourn is his supporting and loving companion Yolande Dallaire Longpré. Cherished grandfather of Kevin and Shelley Desbois, Billy Sabourin, Cindy Sabourin, Daniel Wafer, Sophie and Luc Bégin, Maegan Corston, Jacob and Jessica Niemi, Eric and Josée Sabourin; and great-grandfather to Caleb Sabourin Credger. Born August 27, 1931 at St Félix Dalquier, Québec, he had been a resident of Timmins for over twenty-five years. He worked as a Foreman with Malette Lumber for over twenty years until his retirement. Predeceased by his wife Yvette Morin on October 13, 1992, his son Sylvain, brother George and his parents Gérald and Eva Sabourin. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at 12:00 noon from the chapel of the Miron-Wilson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Oncology Department of the Timmins and District Hospital or to the Canadian Cancer Society would be gratefully acknowledged.
