Loving father of Suzanne Krestiansen (husband Raoul) and Lina Longpré both of Timmins, Carole Longpré (husband Paul) of Montréal, Hélène Chartier (husband Alain) of South Porcupine, Tim Longpré of Meaford, Jason Lantin of Kapuskasing, Michael Skene (wife Tammy) of Hagersville, Richard Skene (wife Penelope) of Port Dover and Alain Prévost (wife Angela) of Noëlville. Dear brother of René Longpré (wife Monique), Roger Longpré (wife Paulette), Claudette Emond (husband Gerry) and Roger Martel (wife Kim) all of Timmins, Christine Cousineau (husband John) of Val Caron and Stella Joly (husband Rick) of Sudbury. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his 21 grandchildren. Predeceased by his granddaughter Victoria-Lynn. Lucien Adrien St-Pierre , of Hearst Death: June 11th, 2002 Funeral services for Hearst resident Lucien Adrien St-Pierre, 78, of 1007 Front St were held June 14, 2002. He died suddenly, June 11, at Notre-Dame Hospital. Born Jan. 1, 1924 in Hearst, he was a truck owner-operator until an accident at age 59. He leaves his wife Anne-Marie (née Turenne) St-Pierre and a daughter Monique St-Pierre, both of Hearst, a sister Germaine Albert of Hearst, and a brother Antonio St-Pierre of Kapuskasing. Rev. Réal Veilleux officiated the morning service at the Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral. Interment followed at the Monseigneur Grenier Cemetery. Funeral director was the Salon Lafrance Funeral Home. David Wesley Kinsman Mr. David Wesley Kinsman, 74, of Emo, Ont., and formerly of Thunder Bay, Ont., passed away unexpectedly Monday, June 10, 2002 in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital—McKellar Site. He was born Feb. 8, 1928 to Merritt and Hilda Kinsman in Fort William, Ont. Wesley received his education at Franklin Street Public and Selkirk High Schools. He was a proud member of the 66th Air Cadet Squadron during World War II. On April 28, 1956, he married Evelyn Sample, who remained his sweetheart for 46 years. Early employment included his job as a lineman for Fort William Hydro and then he went on to be an electrician at Great Lakes Paper (Bowater) for 30 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of IBEW Local 1565 and a former member of the Fort William Curling Club. He also was an adherent of First Presbyterian Church. Wesley was an avid gardener and fisherman, and also enjoyed camping and time spent with the family at camp. He was a great fan of his children and later his grandchildren, supporting their sporting events, academic achievements, and musical accolades. After Evelyn’s retirement in 2000, they retired to the family farm on Hart Road in Chapple Municipality, and enjoyed the quiet countryside and many friendships. Wesley is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn; son, Thomas (Linda) and family, Robert, Bryan, and Sherri-Lyn; son, Ian (Vikki) and family, Laura and Lisa; daughter, Kathleen Ott (Werner) and family, Erika and Megan; and son, Philip (companion Heather). He also is survived by brother-in-law, Robert Southall (nephew Mark); niece, Brenda (Warren) Buttars, nephew, Jim Sample; and other relatives. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Shirley Southall; and granddaughter, Hannah Kinsman. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 13, 2002 at First Presbyterian Church in Thunder Bay. A memorial service was held Saturday, June 15, 2002 in the Chapple Municipal Hall, both conducted by Rev. M. McLennan. Interment was in Chapple Cemetery in Barwick. Pallbearers were Derek and David Buttars, David Niven, Jack Kallos, Robert and Bryan Kinsman, Jim Sample, Robert and James Gibson, and Glen Hart. Attending from out-of-town were Jim Sample from Toronto, and Mr. and Mrs. J. Riel, Robert Kinsman, and Cristal Leochko from Winnipeg.

Funeral services for longtime Hearst resident Simone (née Chartrand) Bubnick, 76, of the Foyer des Pionniers Nursing Home were held June 15, 2002. She died June 12 following a stroke. Born July 19, 1925 in St-Anastasie, Quebec, to Albertine Lambert and Albert Chartrand, she arrived in Jogues, south of Hearst, at age eight. In the 1940s, she worked as a waitress, Hudson Bay Co. clerk, lumber camp cook, and nanny in New York, and later as a full-time seamstress of wedding gowns and for local clothing stores. Having learned to speak English in a lumber camp, “she was the only person we knew who spoke English with a French accent, and French with an English accent,” a son-in-law noted in the euology. She returned to Hearst in 1946 where she married Nick Bubnick in June 1948. An active volunteer with the Hearst Legion Ladies Auxiliary, United Church Women and treasurer for then-St. Paul’s United Church, she enjoyed baking bread and pies, making rhubarb jam, cooking, sewing, knitting, gardening, church activities, overseas travel, babysitting her grandchildren, morning walks, and going for coffee. She obtained her first driver’s licence at age 57, and in 1994 received a town award for her 10 years as a Legion Ladies volunteer. She was predeceased by her husband in a 1980 trucking accident, brother Raymond Chartrand of Hearst, and son-in-law Ted Kates of Alberta in 1986. She leaves daughters Shirley (Isidore) Germain of Toronto, Linda Bubnick of Winnipeg and Phyllis Bubnick of Toronto, sons Allen of Edmonton, Paul (Line Couture) of Hearst and Rick (Kim Schwenker) Bubnick of St. Catharines. Also surviving are three sisters and three brothers, as well as grandchildren David, Sonia, Kristin and Steven Germain of Toronto, Brian and Lisa Kates of Winnipeg, Torny Hansen-Bubnick of Vancouver, Kevin Bubnick of St. Catharines, and Tania Bubnick and Dominic Séguin, both of Hearst. Rev. Douglas Richardson officiated the afternoon service at St. Matthew’s-St. Paul’s Anglican-United Church, followed by interment at the Riverside Cemetery.

Asif, God's precious gift to the Zahin family, leaves behind warm memories of his ever-smiling face, quiet courage and determination in the face of a constant struggle against an ailing heart. On December 31, 1987, Asif became the youngest recipient of a heart transplant in Canada. Sister Mary of the Nativity (Sister Edna Bissonnette) Sister Mary of the Nativity, a Grey Sister of the Immaculate Conception, died in Pembroke, Ontario, on the 18th of June in the 72nd year of her religious life. Sister is mourned by the members of her religious congregation, her sister-in-law, Yvonne Bissonnette and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Leonidas and Zephirine (Pitre). Sister served in ministry as a nurse in Sault Ste. Marie, Pembroke, and Ottawa in Ontario; Lestock and Esterhazy in Saskatchewan; and Vancouver in British Columbia. During her very active retirement she was involved in numerous civic activities and had a particular interest in prison ministry. She spent the final years of her life in Shalom Residence, the sister's infirmary in Pembroke. Resting at the Grey Sisters' Motherhouse, 700 Mackay Street, Pembroke from 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 20th. Liturgy of the Resurrection in the Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 21st. Ernesto worked at Inco Smelter for 31 years, retired and eventually returned to his native home in Italy with his wife Mafalda. Ernesto was known as (pipe) to his friends. He loved to fish and hunt. His joy was watching his grandchildren run around. He will be greatly missed by many family members residing in Sudbury and Italy. He was a life time member of the Caruso Club. Ernesto had three brothers predeceased.. Giacinto Castrechino, Emilio Castrechino and Antonio Castrechino... Ernesto was greatly inspired by Padre Pio. He often dreamed of him. Memorial services for longtime Hearst resident André Alphonse Rocheleau, 75, of 41 Sixth St. were held June 15, 2002. He died June 5 at Notre-Dame Hospital following a lengthy battle with cancer. Born May 24, 1927 in Mont-Laurier, Quebec, he came to the Hearst area in the 1950s. Described by family as a generous, big-hearted person who liked people, he drove logging trucks as well as highway transports for Alary Transport. A member of the Hearst Knights of Columbus, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, hockey and watching news. Predeceased by a brother Jean-Marie Rocheleau of Ville-Marie, Que., and a sister Jacqueline St-Amour of Montreal, he leaves his wife Emilienne (née LeBlanc) Rocheleau of Hearst, son Michel Rocheleau of Hearst, and daughters Nicole and Carole Rocheleau, both of Ottawa. Also surviving are his sisters Margot Lapierre and Pauline Farmer, and a brother Jean-Guy Rocheleau, all of Montreal, granddaughter Tanya-Ann of Hearst, and grandsons Alex of Hearst and Dean of Kirkland Lake. Cremation was done at Hillcrest Crematorium in Matheson. Following the memorial service at the Salon Lafrance Funeral Home, Reverends Rémi Lessard and Jean-Marc Pelletier officiated the morning service at the Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral. Interment followed at the Monseigneur Grenier Cemetery.

Marie Anne Desrosiers 6 Cournoyer St., died at Sensenbrenner Hospital on June 15, 2002. She was 68 years old. She was born on June 5, 1934 in Strickland. She was a waitress at the Palm Grove Restaurant. She enjoyed knitting and took great pride in being a good mother. She was predeceased by her husband Wilfrid, four children Marguerite, Jules, Lucien and Simon, and three brothers. She is survived by one daughter Violet (Allen) McKague of Bellville, Ohio, two sons, Guy, Yves (Nicole) of Kap, seven sisters Lucia Sauvé of Woodstock, Thérèse Sauve of Gregoire Mills, Juliette Velleneuve, Cécile Duguay and Annette Côte all of Kap, Rose Cooper and Nicole Letter all of Trenton, one grandson; Mathieu. Funeral services will be held on June 20th, at Notre Dame des Victoires at 10 a.m. Rev. Robert Tremblay will be performing the service. Cremation took place, and interment of the ashes to follow at the Kapuskasing Cemetery.

Velma Anne Riordon (Cox) Velma Anne Riordon (Cox) passed away peacefully in hospital on Thursday, June 6, 2002 with her family at her side. Velma was born on May 17, 1943 in St. Boniface, Man. to Frederick and Amy Cox. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and volunteering her time. She was especially proud of the time she spent as a volunteer helping children learn to read. In recent years, some of her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren and indulging her interest in sketching. Velma was predeceased by her father, Frederick; an infant son, Wade Frederick; mother, Amy; and stepfather, Adolph Werner. She is survived by, and will be lovingly remembered by, her children, John Carson (Tammy), Colleen Doran (Peter), and Kenna Huffman (Greg); and grandchildren, Marc and Mitchell Riordon, Tasmin and Tara Doran, and Curtis and Ashton Huffman. Also surviving are her brother, Robert Cox (Hala-Dee); sister, Susan Bryk (Bryan); stepchildren, Lisa St. Amand (Chris), Kevin Stevens (Lisa), Sonya Chartrand, and Rhonda Dupuis; numerous nieces and nephews; and her treasured cats, Blaze and Simba. A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at 1 p.m. in the Redwood Alliance Church, 532 N. Edward St., with Friend Jim Hyder officiating. Interment in Atikokan, Ont. will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 200 Van Norman St., Thunder Bay, Ont., P7A 4B8, would be greatly appreciated. Elizabeth (Betty) J. Crawford Elizabeth (Betty) J. Crawford passed away suddenly March 11, 2002 in Weslaco, Texas. Beloved and greatly-missed wife of W. Roland (Roly) Crawford; mother of David in Calgary, Alta. and Denise Wepruk (Randy); and grandmother of Danny and Erin Wepruk in Red Lake, Ont. She was born June 21, 1928 in Toronto, Ont. to John and Ruby Gillanders, who predeceased her. Also surviving are her sisters, Barbara Thompson (Morris) of Lindsay, Ont., and Jacqueline Gillespie (Tom) in Belfast, N. Ireland; and brother, James Gillanders (Marion) of Scarborough, Ont. Betty held many offices in various organizations in the cities where she lived. She was executive secretary to at least five company presidents and CEOs. She also was immediate past-president of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29 in Fort Frances, and was instrumental in starting our annual dinner/dance at the Legion in September each year. Betty loved living on Rainy Lake and in Texas, where among other events she spearheaded a highly-successful annual Can-Am Day in our park. She loved flowers, especially roses, which she grew in both Canada and Texas, and went to her cremation holding two yellow Texas roses. We shall not see her like again. Roly and Betty were married June 28, 1952 in Toronto, Ont. There will be a memorial service Friday, June 28, 2002 at 1 p.m. in St. John’s Anglican Church, with the Rev. Canon Terry McNear officiating, followed by a reception upstairs in the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29. “Until we meet again—and we will—may God keep you in the palm of His hand.” My love always, Roly.
