She was a volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society in Dartmouth and Pictou East and was a member of the Women Alike competitive team, "women alike abreast a river". She is survived by husband Cdr. (ret.) R. Brent Steele; daughter: Linda Steele-Mercier (Michel), Ottawa, Ont; sons: Raymond (Della), Oakville, Ont., LCdr. Known as "Didi" to all her family and friends, died of a stroke at the Starwood Extendicare in Ottawa on June 9, 2002 with her loving husband William at her side. Didi was born March 29, 1914 in Slovakia and arrived in Canada after WW II heading for Yellowknife where she embraced the northern lifestyle. Didi was very active throughout the late 1940's, the 50's and the 60's with the Canadian Handicraft Guild in the development and promotion of Inuit carvings and prints. An accomplished golfer, she and her husband Bill challenged the fairways at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club and tested many other courses throughout North America. She is survived by her loving husband Bill, daughter and son-in-law Jean and David Sproule of Vancouver, Granddaughters Sidney Sproule of Toronto, Robin Sproule of Yellowknife, sister Katka Friedl of Vienna, Austria as well as extended family in Toronto and Ottawa. The family wishes to thank Dr. Dobson and the caring staff at the Starwood Extendicare for their kindness during Didi's brief stay. Peacefully in his 82nd year at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus on June 13, 2002. In search of peace and greater opportunity, Fred brought his growing family to Canada a half century ago. Settling in the Nepean countryside, he was surrounded by the wilderness and wildlife he so loved. Fred supported his family as a painter in the construction industry working on many landmark projects in Ottawa. For many years, Fred Reithmeier was renowned as the breeder of prize-winning show birds. In his seventies, he took up a more artistic form of painting and leaves a legacy of accomplished watercolours. The paintings reflect our Opa's love of mountains, lakes, streams and forests. Chief among all the memories he leaves us is his deep love for his family. Loving and loved husband for more than fifty years to Reinhilde, his children, grandchildren, and his home were the heart of his life. We shall all miss him sadly, but will rejoice in his accomplishments. Larry Carr, a former resident of Manitowaning passed away at his home in Sudbury on Tuesday June 11, 2002 at the age of 56 years. Larry was born in Burpee Township son of Jack and Verna (Campbell) Carr (both predeceased). Larry enjoyed reading, hockey, baseball, a good game of cards and antique cars. He also was a member of the Manitowaning Curling Club and an avid curler. Larry worked for Air Cab in Sudbury for several years. Dear husband of Jill (McLennan) Carr of Manitowaning. DASTI, Kaarina (nee Nordquist) - 1924 - 2002 The family announces with sorrow her death after a short illness at the Golden Manor on Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at the age of 77 years with her family at her side. Beloved wife of John Dasti. Dear mother of Sandra Thibeault (George) of Hanmer, David Dasti (Louise) of Thunder Bay and Judy Benham (David) of Dryden. Loving grandmother of David-John, Ryan, Derek, Dawn, Samantha, Dean, Melanie, Kendra as well as 9 great-grandchildren. Dear sister of Kay Friiman of Mississauga. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Kaarina was predeceased by her parents, Eino and Helga Nordquist. Kaarina and her husband John were married on January 19, 1946 and settled in Foleyet where Kaarina spent many years as a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone and later as a secretary for the Foleyet Public School Board. Kaarina, the consummate homemaker, was renowned for her skills in sewing and baking. Her grandchildren where her joy and time spent with them was very precious to her. She loved the garden harvest season and shared it’s bounty with friends and neighbours. She was a long time supporter of the Canadian Cancer Society and an active member of the St. John’s Anglican Church in Foleyet. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, June 14, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from the St. John’s Anglican Church in Foleyet. She was born in Samobor, Croatia. Zora came to Sudbury in 1957 from Croatia. Zora was devoted to her loving family especially her grandchildren who fondly called her Baka. She took great pride and interest in their activities and accomplishments. Il était l'époux bien-aimé de Lorna (Yakabuski) St-Amour et le père adoré de Hugo et Dominique (Robert Marchand). Rodrigue était omnipraticien et urgentologue dévoué au CHVO de Hull pendant une trentaine d'années. Il était également conseiller médical principal au Régime de pensions du Canada durant plusieurs années. Il laisse dans le deuil ses frères et soeurs: Marie Lourdes (Gérard Hurtubise), Jeannine, Raymond (Eva MacDonald), Maurice (Aline Gauthier), Eloise (feu Arthur Baker), Germain, Ronald (Pierrette Lalande), et Noëlla (feu Hans Hemken), ainsi que de nombreux neveux et nièces, collègues de travail et ami(e)s. Loving father of Teresa Vizza (Luigi) of Sudbury, Alfonsina Carbone of Vancouver, Nella Berardelli (Ernesto) of Sudbury, Alfonso (Marisa) of Sudbury and Maria Pyewell (John) of Vancouver. Dear brother of Sister Alfonsina of Italy. Predeceased by brothers Alessandro (Carolina), Alberto (Genoeffa), Emilio (Teresa), Francesco (Elena predeceased) and his sister Assunta. Vincenzo was born in Figline, Vegliaturo, Provincia di Cosenza, on July 23, 1908. In his forties, he came to Canada, and settled in Sudbury to make a better life for his family. He accomplished that very well. He loved to have his family around him for all occasions and enjoyed sharing his hospitality with all. Vincenzo was also an avid gardener whose garden would flourish throughout the summers. He was a quiet and faithfilled gentleman who attended St. Clement’s Church. He leaves behind a rich legacy of love and joy for those who knew him. Dapo was about to graduate from Lester B. Pearson Catholic High School. He was a star athlete, excelling in soccer and basketball. Dr. Thomas David Peacefully, at Island Lodge, Ottawa, June 10, 2002, at the age of 87. Son of the late Frederick Northwood and Reena (Cochrane) Northwood. Graduated in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto in 1938, received his M.A. and Ph.D.in Physics in 1950 and 1952. Reited from Building Research (now Institute for Research in Construction), National Research Council. His field was acoustics and his special interest was the architectural acoustics of churches, theatres and concert halls, which fitted well with his lifelong interest in music. He was a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and of the American Society for Testing and Materials. He was instrumental in the founding of the Canadian Acoustical Association and was President for a period. For many years, he was editor of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. He edited a volume in the Benchmark series "Architectural Acoustics" and published many papers. In recognition of significant achievements, he received the Wallace Clement Sabine Medal of the Acoustical Society of America in 1982 and the Wallace Waterfall Award from ASTM in 1989. Tom was an accomplished pianist and recorder player and enjoyed a long association with CAMMAC (Canadian Amateur Musicians/Musiciens Amateurs du Canada) and in 1965 and 1979, won prizes from CAMMAC for his compositions. From the 1950's until his death his health failed in the early 1990's, he directed an amateur recorder group in Ottawa. Tom was predeceased by his wife Yvonne (Brown) Northwood and granddaughter, Pamela Northwood and is survived by his former wife, Beatrice Northwood. He will be lovingly remembered as a quiet, amiable, humorous and unassuming person of many talents by his son, David Northwood (Ena) of Edmonton, grandchildren Stephen Northwood of Belleville, Dwight Northwood (Jennifer) of Hanna, Alberta, Rena Bibeau (Denis) of Edmonton, many great grandchildren, sisters Barbara Northwood of Toronto and Dorothy Hodgson of Ottawa, niece and nephew Susan (Norman Abraham) Hodgson and Andrew (Diana McCarthy) Hodgson, all of Ottawa, and several grand nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for the loving care and attention provided for Tom over the last years by Jandy Lafleur, Shirley Duquette, Diane Champagne, Lori Mitchell, Julia Fraser, David Waldron, and the staff at Island Lodge.
