Former N.R.C. employee and long time employee House of Commons With deep sadness, we announce the death of Robert Arthur "Bob " Lay, son of Elizabeth "Betty" Challis and the late Robert Lay (1963), in hospital on Saturday, May 25, 2002 after a long illness. Surviving are sisters Judith and Helen "Georgia", brothers Brian and John (Lilly Quitain), a nephew Robert (fiancee Amanda Chapman), and nieces Tracy Lay and Sylvia Johnson-Lay. Bob's extended family included Mark Mueca, Christopher, Christian and Christine Roger, William and Kyle Barber. He is also mourned by numerous cousins and dear friends. Born in Ottawa in 1932, Bob attended Osgoode and York Street Public Schools, Lisgar Collegiate and Carleton University. Following graduation, Bob was employed at the National Research Council. After travelling abroad for a year, he returned home and later joined the staff at the House of Commons, where he faithfully served several M.P.s and Cabinet Ministers. He retired in 2001 but was unable to fully enjoy his retirement due to recurring illness. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Saturday, June 8 from 2 p.m. until the Celebration of Bob's Life at 3 p.m. A reception in the McGarry Family Reception Centre will follow. Buyer: Rose (Neher) Buyer went home to be with her Lord on April 29, 2002 at the age of 92. Rose spent the last four years at the Golden Hills Lodge where we made many friends. She is survived by three children, Daun (Phyllis) Buyer of Calgary, Nova Ohlauser, Morley (Shirley) Buyer of Carbon; six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Art (Reada) Buyer and sister-in-law Rose Schell as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Rose was very active in the Carbon Baptist Church, holding many positions over the years. She was predeceased by her husband, Adam and her parents, as well as one infant sister and four brothers. Memorial services were held on Thursday, May 2, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carbon Baptist Church with her grandson, Reverend Lyle Buyer officiating. PERICHAK, Joseph (Josip) In loving memory of Joseph (Josip) Perichak, 73 years, of Sudbury, who passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 29th, 2002 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph’s Health Centre. Born in Selo Brlog, Croatia, he married Danica (Severinac) in 1957 in Sudbury. Joseph left Croatia March 19th, 1950 and worked in Salisburg, Austria. He came to Canada November 1952 to Hamilton, moving to Sudbury March 19th, 1953 at which time he secured employment with Inco as an electrician, retiring from the Clarabelle Mill in March 1992. He was a very active and well respected member of the local Croatian Community. A longtime and hardworking member of the Croatian Hall; he was also a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus and member of the Inco Quarter Century Club. A Roman Catholic, he was a member of Holy Trinity Church and Sveti Marko Croatian Church. He will be remembered as a generous person who was always quick to help others especially in the capacity as an accomplished Mr. Fix-It in home and property repairs and projects. He was an avid gardener. Joseph generously shared his good humour with all who knew him and he had the wonderful ability to make people laugh. Beloved husband of Danica (Severinac) Perichak of Sudbury. Loving father of Catherine (husband Gordon Bobesich) and John (wife Linda) both of Oakville and Joseph of Burketon. Battle: Irene Battle passed away at the Drumheller Continuing Care Facility on May 4th, 2002, just before her 100th birthday. Irene was born to Samuel and Emma Crossley on June 10, 1902 in Wellingborough, Northampton, England, the youngest of four children. At the age of one year, she emigrated with her family to Canada. They lived in Toronto, Calgary and Strathmore, before homesteading in the Dorothy district. In 1918, she married Felix Battle and they farmed in the Delia district until their retirement in 1963. While living at Delia, Irene was active in the community, the Farm Women's Union of Alberta and was a member of Highland Chapter, OES. She also served as local correspondent to the Delia Times, Drumheller Mail and Hanna Herald for many years. Following retirement from the farm, they made their home in Calgary, then to Carstairs until 1983 when Irene returned to live in Drumheller. She enjoyed many happy hours playing Bingo with friends and was a member of the Pioneer Trail Seniors Center. For the past 5 1/2 years, she has been a resident of the TR Ross Nursing Home and the new Continuing Care Facility. She was predeceased by her husband Felix; grandson, Allan Battle; great grandson, Thomas Battle and three sons-in-law, Walter Dickie, Arthur Keenan, and Ivor Bowen, one brother, Leonard Crossley and two sisters, Winifred Walton and Dorothy Kikendall. She is survived by her eight children, Lester (Betty), Evelyn Dickie, Helen Bowen, Alma Keenan, Geneva (Harvey) Seagrave, Jesse (Elsie), Wayne (Gina) and Gloria (Keith) Johnson; 25 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and 35 great, great grandchildren. A memorial Service will be held at Knox United Church, Drumheller on Thursday, May 9th at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Irene's memory may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Marshall: Fred Marshall passed away on March 27, 2002 at the age of 83 in Highcliffe, England. Fred, the son of Dan & Grace Marshall ran a garage business called Fred's Auto Body in Craigmyle for over 20 years and farmed south of Craigmyle near his parentÕs farm. Fred and his family moved to England about 30 years ago but never forgot all his loving family and friends from Craigmyle and surrounding area. He will be sadly missed by Debbie, his daughter and her husband Dick and grandchildren David & Hannah. Fred is also survived by 3 brothers Ernest of Delia, Nick of Richmond, B.C., Bert of Calgary, 1 sister Gladys Lewis of Calgary & numerous nieces, nephews & cousins. At the Ottawa Heart Institute, after a brief illness, on May 27, 2002. Daughter of the late Emma Handler. Survived by her father Edwin, sisters Linda and Patrina, and brothers Edwin and James. Christina was Comptroller for the Air Force Association of Canada and during more than 20 years of dedicated service interacted with literally thousands of RCAF and CF Air Veterans across Canada and overseas. Her Air Force friends are many, and her quiet demeanour, coupled with her accounting and membership skills, won their highest respect during the business meetings and conventions as she steered the Association on an even financial course. James: 1918-2002 Mr. Hubert (Bert) James beloved husband of Mrs. Mona James of Airdrie, passed away at the Peter Lougheed Centre on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at the age of 84 years. Bert was born on the family farm on March 14, 1918 in Verdant Valley, AB. He met Mona in 1948 and they married in 1949. Together they farmed in the Munson area until the mid 1970Õs when they sold the farm, and moved to Drumheller and then to Airdrie in 1993. Bert enjoyed gardening, fishing, boating, hunting and going for long walks. Besides his loving wife, Bert is also survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Linda and Howard Baron of Airdrie, Connie and Doug Lester of Red Deer, Fay Ann Wallace of Calgary and Christine and Brad Wiebe of Stettler; a son, Dan James and his companion Marilyn Wallace of Airdrie; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Lillian of Calgary. Bert was predeceased by his parents, three sisters and three brothers. Deane was born on May 4th, 1926 and was raised in Saskatchewan. She married Ralph O. Murray in 1947. they lived a few years in Hamilton, Ontario, before moving to Sudbury in 1952. She worked at the Sudbury General Hospital for many years in the Occupational Therapy Department. She volunteered in many organizations and always found time for others, her warm and gentle heart, caring and graceful ways, and her strength, endeared her to many. Deane enjoyed life, family, friends and her garden and she was an optimist. Beloved wife of Ralph O. Murray predeceased. BOURCIER, William The family regret with sorrow the passing of William Bourcier of Espanola, on Thursday May 30th, 2002, at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph’s Health Centre, in his 51st year. William is survived by a devoted mother, Evelyn Bourcier-Clendenning of Espanola and the late George Bourcier (1984) and was a special stepson to the late Gordon Clendenning (2000). Loving father, best friend and companion to his three children, Matthew (friend Andrea May), Natalie and James all of Espanola. Very dear brother of James (wife Janet) of Espanola. William was an Associate Member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 39, Espanola. He had a great love for the outdoors, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling. His favorite past time was spending time at the "farm". Fixing anything was a challenge making him the best at anything he did. He idolized his children and lived for them and his "Beau" who preceded him of this life and was greatly missed. William will always be remembered by his so many dear friends as a man of absolute integrity, pride, fairness and honesty. On May 26, 2002, Dr. Paul Charles Michael LaDelpha passed peacefully in Sidney By The Sea, British Columbia in his 75th year. He is survived by his dear brother Dr. Joseph Ladelpha of Ottawa, his predeceased sister Josephine Chase, Ottawa, his children Stephen, Eric, Karen and their families, his nieces and nephews and his many friends at Beechwood Village. Paul was a Major in the Army Reserves, Past President and Co-founder of the Medical Aid Foundation of Canada, Past President of the Britannia Yacht Club, and Examiner for the Canadian Power Squadron. He served as Commissioner with the Boy Scouts of Canada and was very involved with the Ottawa Lions Club. A Memorial Service was held on May 30, 2002 at Beechwood Village. Milburn: On April 28, 2002 at Victoria General Hospital, at the age of 47 years, Ronald Milburn passed away. Sergeant Ron Milburn, CD, is survived by his 5 daughters, Janet (Shane) Martin, Valerie Milburn, Colleen Milburn, Kathy Milburn and Jackie Milburn, 2 brothers John (Dorothy) and Bob (Garnette), and sister JoAnne (Vern) Rourke. He was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on the 23rd of September 1954, where he attended school. He joined the Naval Reserve in 1970. He was in the first graduating class of the Saskatchewan Provincial Police College and policed in Cudworth and Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. In 1981, Ron arrived in Victoria, BC and worked full time for the Naval Reserve rising to the position of Chief Clerk of The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary's). His Military Service Duties included working at APEC and the Commonwealth Games after which he received letters of commendation for his performance at each. A Military Memorial Service was held at Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria, BC, corner of Quadra and Rockland, Friday the 3rd of May 2002 at 2:00pm. The service was officiated by the Very Reverend Dean Wright. Donations may be made to the Victoria Mustard Seed.

Thomas Bernard Cox Thomas Bernard Cox, 74, of 12 Grenville St., Atikokan, Ont., passed away peacefully Thursday, May 30, 2002 at the Atikokan General Hospital. Throughout a 26-month struggle with cancer, in which he successfully rallied twice, Tom displayed characteristic courage, humour, and a positive mental attitude. Tom Cox was born in Fort Frances, Ont. on April 30, 1928. During his 27,040-day engagement here on Earth, Tom was truly grateful to God for each and every single day. As a youth in Fort Frances, Tom managed his own large paper route and after high school, became a grounds keeper at the local golf course. Tom also was a great hockey player in his prime and was even shopped briefly by the big leagues. But he was an entrepreneur at heart. Tom began his business life in 1949 in partnership as an independent logging contractor. He married his soul mate, Ilene (Isberg) in Fort Frances in 1952 and together they moved to Atikokan at the outset of the mining boom. Aside from his friendly demeanor and enormous physical size, the one thing that made Tom Cox a truly unique individual was his absolute fearlessness in the face of both challenge and change. Tom reinvented himself a number of times, changing careers into seemingly unrelated fields. Whenever he left a position to move into something new, it would take three people to replace him. He built his own houses, repaired his own cars, and fixed every kid’s bicycle in the neighborhood. Tom entered back into the world of private business again in 1979 as the new owner of Quetico North. This was a business that truly suited him because it was really many businesses in one—a gas station, restaurant, marine dealership, canoe trip outfitter, grocery store, etc. Throughout his many careers, Tom’s trademark signature would have appeared on an estimated 100,000 pay cheques. Tom believed in people and in his community, and gave freely of his tremendous energy and considerable talents to various and numerous worthy causes and organizations. Tom was predeceased by his loving wife, Ilene Mae Cox, nee Isberg (“Blossom”), in September of 1996. He will be missed by his five children, Bernie, Cathy (Neil), Jim, Pat, and Mike, daughters-in-law, Lynn, Darlene, Joanne, and Ally-son; son-in-law, Randy Neil; and seven grandchildren, Michael, Mackenzie, Katie, Pearl, Rose, Jamie, and Robert. Tom also is survived by his brother, James H. Cox and his wife, Marg, of Fort Frances. Tom Cox was well-known throughout Rainy River District and Northwestern Ontario, and he will be missed by his many friends, relatives, and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at 11 a.m. (CDT) at St Patrick’s Church in Atikokan. Fr. Romeo Antimano will be officiating. Brown: It is with profound sadness that we announce the quite sudden passing of our loved one, Ronald Gordon Alexander Brown (Ron Jr.) on Saturday, April 27, 2002. Ron Jr. was surrounded by family and dearest friends as we said our last goodbyes. Ron Jr. has resided in the Elk Valley for 30 years. He enjoyed skiing, hiking, camping and had a great fondness for nature and the outdoors. Beloved wife of the late Thomas Clark Newton and dearly loved mom of Mrs. Nancy Mackle (Bob) of Carleton Place and Robert (Linda) of Sidney, British Columbia. Grandmother of Gordon (Triva) and Jane Newton and great-grandmother of Olina. Born in Halifax, N.S., the youngest of seven children. She will be missed by many relatives and friends she met while travelling with Tom during his R.C.A.F. career.
