BRENNAN, Sister Susan (Sister St. John the Baptist) - Sister Susan Brennan, a Grey Sister of the Immaculate Conception, died in Pembroke, Ontario, on the 29th day of May in the 71st year of her religious life. Sister is mourned by the members of her religious congregation as well as her cousins, Vivian and Phil Pouze and their son, Ron. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Elizabeth (Williams). Sister Susan spent 56 years in ministry in Sault Ste. Marie as the Operating Room supervisor and as instructor and later Director of Nursing Education at Sault Ste. Marie General Hospital. She also volunteered her services in the chapel of the hospital after retiring from active ministry. She spent the final years of her life in Shalom Residence, the sisters’ infirmary in Pembroke. Resting at the Grey Sisters’ Motherhouse, 700 Mackay Street, Pembroke from 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 30th. Liturgy of the Resurrection in the Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 31st. SMYTH, Wm. J. Bertrand "Bert" In loving memory of Wm. J. Bertrand "Bert" Smyth, 88 years, of Lively, who passed away Monday morning, May 27th, 2002 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph’s Health Centre. Born in Creemore, he married Evelyne (Kennedy) in 1947 in St. Catharines. He was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church. Bert grew up on the family farm in Stroud. He served overseas during World War II with the R.C.A.F. He settled in the Sudbury area in 1947. He was an electrician at Creighton Mine having 28 years at Inco, retiring in 1975. A proud Canadian, he belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #224 Copper Cliff and the Masonic Lodge. In his younger years he was very active in the community coaching minor hockey. He was a Cub leader for the Boy Scouts and he played broomball. He had a great admiration for Gordie Howe and his hockey accomplishments. Bert was a champion horseshoe player. He was famous for his blueberry jam which he generously shared with his loving family and many friends. Beloved husband of Evelyne (Kennedy) Smyth of Lively. (nee Perkins) Margaret Jean Hardman passed away Monday, May 27, 2002 in her 87th year. Born March 11, 1915 and raised in Estevan, Saskatchewan, she was the second of three daughters of William J. Perkins and Margaret Irene Perkins. After completing high school, Jean went to Toronto to train at the Toronto General Hospital, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1939. She joined the Canadian Medical Corp., serving in England and Italy in the No. 10, General Hospital RCAMC, during World War II. On her return to Canada, she continued in the army until her marriage to Dr. Arthur Cleland Hardman in 1948. Widowed in 1969, Jean came to Victoria in 1973 with her sister Flo and her father. Her activities included serving on the board of her condominium, volunteering for the St. John's Ambulance (for which she was recognized in 1978) and golfing. One of her proudest accomplishments was a hole in one at the Victoria Golf Club where she was a member for several years. Jean leaves behind a grieving family; daughters Patricia and Wendy; grandchildren Erin, Brian and Ian; and sisters Marge and Flo. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Gilbert McLean and the staff of Glenwarren Central Park Lodge for their care, and to Chris Woodward and Larry Haviland for their assistance to the family during Jean's illness. A Memorial Service will be held at McCALL BROS. FAMILY CHAPEL, Johnson at Vancouver Street, Victoria, B.C., Saturday, June 1, 2002 at 3 p.m. with a reception in the Graham McCall Family Centre to follow. Flowers graciously declined. Passed away May 26, 2002 in Ottawa at the age of 63. Born in Kings County, she was the daughter of the late Katherine Viner (Stevens) and George Viner of Kings County. She served over 25 years of service in the Canadian Armed Forces as a Sergeant. She was a Public Service employee in Halifax and Ottawa for over 20 years. Surviving daughters, Wanda Young Jones, Beverly Jones, Monica Jones all of Halifax, Caprice Jones of Ottawa, and sons Rocco Jones, George Jones and Anthony Jones all of Halifax and Earl Jones of Ottawa. In Ottawa, peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, May 26, 2002 in her 94th year. Born Christian Elizabeth Mitchell in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1908, she was the daughter of George MacGregor Mitchell and Evelyn Lucy (nee Smith), beloved wife of the late Vice-Admiral Harold Taylor Wood Grant and dearly loved mother of Sarah Stalley (Frank), Caroline Gill (Christopher) and Gregor Grant (Sigrid). Also survived by seven grandchildren, John, Sue (Josh), Andrew, Tim, Will, Ian and Christian. She was predeceased by brothers George, Jack and Jim. A long-standing member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, she served with the Women's Guild and over her long life was involved with numerous charities. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Friday, May 31 from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 1 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (corner of Kent Street and Wellington Street. Wheelchair access at 84 Kent Street). An additional service will be held at the Presbyterian Church of St. David, Halifax at a later date. Interment Fairview Cemetery, Halifax.
