CAMPBELL, William "Bill" A. In loving memory of William "Bill" A. Campbell, 82 years, who passed away Friday afternoon, May 24th, 2002 at the Extendicare Falconbridge. Beloved husband of Marion Campbell predeceased in 1968 and Leatha Campbell of West Virginia. Loving father of Linda Hayes of Oakville, Wayne and Norman (wife Marcelle "Cookie") both of Sudbury and Patricia Mitchell of Illinois. Cherished grandfather of Julie, Laura, Lisa, Norman, Christopher and Michael. Dear step-father of Jan Drapper of West Virginia and step-grandson Charlie. Born in London, he was a World War II Veteran and past member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Over the years he worked as a florist, mink rancher, author, publisher and operated a Tourist Camp at Key River. He wrote the Ontario Sportsman’s Guide for many years and two successful books, "History of the French River and it’s people" and North Eastern Georgian Bay. He was a member of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, originating current gun courses, a member of Ontario Outfitters Association and Key Harbour Association. He loved flowers, gardening and everything outdoors. He enjoyed people and was well known for his "gift of gab". Funeral Service in the LOUGHEED FUNERAL HOME, 252 Regent St. at Hazel St., Sunday, May 26th, 2002 at 1 p.m. Sunday. Interment in the Riverside Cemetery. AITKEN, Jean (nee Rose) 1913-2002 Jean Aitken passed away on to the other side on Monday, May 20th, 2002 at the Marycrest Home for the Aged in Peterborough, Ontario. She was in her 89th year. Jeanie Rose was born in 1913 in Peterborough, the daughter of Reverend Wes and Annie Rose. Her mother was a descendant of the Irish immigrants who first settled in the Peterborough area in 1825. In 1939 she married Bill Aitken and moved to Toronto and latterly to Port Credit in Mississauga where she worked as a store clerk, pharmacist’s assistant and Registered Nurse’s Aid. She was active in the Eastern Star, the Home and School Association and as a tireless worker for many Progressive Conservative candidates in the provincial and federal elections. She was a gifted seamstress and a member of the United Church of Canada. In 1976 she moved back to Peterborough when her husband retired and continued to be active in many church and social service organizations. She was strong-willed and hardworking and pushed her husband Bill through an honour’s programme in history at Trent University. He became Trent’s oldest graduate at age 74 in 1986. Jean is survived by her son the Reverend Dr. Brian Aitken of Sudbury, daughter Dr. Wendy Scott of Oakville, grandchildren Sheila Aitken of Toronto and Adam Scott of Oakville, and niece Betty McHale of Georgetown Ontario. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s United Church, Walford Rd. on Tuesday, May 28th at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations will be used to create the Jean Aitken Memorial Banner honouring the work of women in the church. Suddenly but peacefully on May 23, 2002, we lost our dear, sweet father, Thomas Smith at age 82. A gentle, kind man with a brilliant mind and a keen wit, he brought sunshine to all he touched. We are comforted in knowing he will join the love of his life, his wife Catherine, whom he had dearly missed after her passing. He will be deeply missed by daughters Christine (Gerald Strickland), Rosemary (Yves Genest) and Patricia (Jim Roche). Mary Elizabeth Armstrong (nee Brydges) born June 15, 1912, daughter of the late Joseph Brydges and Mary MacFarlane of Springtown, Ontario. SWITZER, Jean Josephine, R.N. (nee Forbes) Passed away peacefully on May 24, 2002 at the age of 89 years. Pre-deceased by her loving Husband & best friend Alex (1986) and by her Parents Duncan & Frazie (nee MacDonnell). She is the dear Mom of Anne Frazie Winters & husband Randy, Jim Switzer & wife Carole all of Windsor and Michael Debus & wife Marie of Keswick, Ont. She is the loving Grandma of Jessica Larsh and husband Ryan, Jamie and Patrick Winters, Ann Switzer, Joe, Steven, Jennifer and Tina Debus. She has four Great grandchildren who are her pride and joy, Julia and Alex Larsh, and Ian and Carson Debus. She is pre-deceased by her Sister Katherine MacFarlane, late of Wallaceburg (1997). Will be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews Mary Kay Amlin and her husband Ron, Jean Merritt and Jere McFarlane and wife Olga. She will be missed by her brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews from the Switzer families. Jean was a loving wife and mother. CHRISTAKOS, Anastasia J. Anastasia J. Christakos, a native of Sudbury, passed away peacefully in Niceville, Fl., on Sunday, May 5, 2002. Beloved wife of Dr. James G. Christakos for 53 years. Loving mother of Gregory (wife Starla) and loving grandmother of James and Michael, of Niceville, Fl. Eldest daughter of James H. and Antonia Christakos of Sudbury, both predeceased. Sister of Penny (husband Dr. I. Voudoukis) of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mch, Maria and Gloria (husband Jim Bazos) both of Toronto as well as brother Harry, predeceased by brothers Nick, George and Socrates. She will be fondly remembered by sisters-in-law Helen S. Christakos and Catherine G. Christakos of Sudbury, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Before her marriage, Anastasia was active with the Sunday School, Young Adults of the Church of the Epiphany and a District Leader of the Girl Guides in the Sudbury area. Prior to relocating to Florida, she served multiple terms on the Alabama State Board of Garden Clubs, the Girl Scouts, Sunshine Club, and Library Friends Committee. Anastasia was an accomplished artist and was frequently called upon to pen official proclamations and city documents. Anastasia was always happiest when visiting her birthplace, Sudbury. ("Les"/ "Laci") May 10, 1933 - May 24, 2002 Peacefully in hospital, after a short but courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 69. Loving husband of Kristina Kiszkiel and much loved father of Ray, Mike (Christine), Jackie (Bruce) and Cathy. Dear brother of Eva (Jeno) and uncle to Ken and Cathy. Predeceased by beloved mother Ilona, father Dezso and dear son, Martin. Fondly remembered and cherished by extended family and friends in Canada, Hungary, Poland and Scotland. Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1933, emigrated to Scotland in 1956 and then Canada in 1964. Graduated as a mechanical engineer at Glasgow University, he later joined the Canadian federal public service where he retired in 1986, moving on to other entrepreneurial ventures, including real estate with Royal Lepage. He was a life-long athlete who played competitive water-polo in all three of his home countries. His many joys in life included alpine skiing, including many years as a ski patroller with Camp Fortune Ski Club, a long time member of City View Tennis Club and former member of the Capital City Chorus. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Tuesday, May 28 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Wednesday, May 29 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow in the McGarry Family Reception Centre. Beatrice M. Simpson Of Elgin, Ontario, passed away on May 11, 2002 at the Carveth Care Centre, Gananoque, in her 101st year. Beatrice was born in Elgin, Ontario, the daughter of the late Burton Burtch and Mary-Ann Flynn. She was a homemaker and had been retired for 12 years. Beatrice attended California Public School, and the United Church. She loved flowers, knitting, crocheting, her home and family and enjoyed playing cards, and dancing when she was younger. Beatrice is survived by her brother Merton Burtch, Maberly; daughters Mrs. Ray Gamble (Meta), Glenna McFadden, Mrs. Gerald Acorn (Shirley) and her son Earl Simpson. She was predeceased by her husband Millard Simpson, son Leslie M. Simpson, granddaughter Jo-Anne Rogers, her parents and 4 sisters and 4 brothers. The funeral was held on May 14, 2002. Rev. Joe passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Monday, May 20, 2002, at the age of 91. Beloved husband for 61 years of Ruth Alexandra Argue. Dear father of Marilyn and Ron. Born and raised in Peterborough, and a descendAitkenant of the original Irish settlers in Peter Scott’s logging mill settlement, Jeanie Rose married Bill Aitken in 1939 and the couple moved to Toronto and latterly to Port Credit in Mississauga. She worked as a store clerk, pharmacist’s aid and Registered Nursing Aid. In 1977 she moved back to Peterborough when her husband retired. For many years she cared for the wife of Colonel J. Dewart, a former mayor of Peterborough. She was a life-long member of the Eastern Star, was active in the Home and School movement and worked tirelessly for many Tory candidates in provincial and federal elections. She was a character with enormous energy and will power who pushed her husband, Bill, to obtain his B.A. in history from Trent University when he was 74. She was predeceased by her parents, Wes and Annie Rose, her sister Aileen Turner and her brother Walter Rose, and especially by her beloved husband Bill Aitken. She is survived by her son Dr. Brian Aitken of Sudbury, her daughter Wendy of Oakville, her grandchildren Sheila Aitken of Toronto and Adam Scott of Oakville and by her niece Betty McHale of Georgetown. Victor Bell McCalpin Victor passed away in his 94th year on April 17, 2002 at Lenadco Home, Napanee after complications suffered due to a broken hip in February. He attended South Lake Public School and then Kemptville Agricultural College where he graduated in 1934. Victor and Jessie owned and operated a dairy farm "Sunny Knoll" on South Lake Road. The farm was sold in 1964 and a move was made to Gananoque where they had a house built on Sydenham Street. They lived in Gananoque for 22 years before moving to Kingston. Victor was a member of the Gananoque Lions Club and the Eastern Ontario Breeders Association. He received several awards in farming, mainly for enabling others to farm better. Victor enjoyed conventions and meetings in connection with his farming interests. He was a member of the United Church throughout his life, attending Springfield, Grace and Sydenham Street Churches. In 1998, Victor’s wife Jessie McMillan died suddenly. He was also predeceased by his parents Emma Bell and Allan McCalpin, a sister Mildred Lloyd in 1959 and niece Brenda Calver in 1982. Victor is survived by his sisters Bernice Elliott and Fausta Cochrane; nieces Myrla (Rod) Shaw, Angela (Paul) Eskerod, Erma (Bill) Bracken and Knelda (John) Johnson; nephews Paul (Hazel) Lloyd, Claire (Bev) Cochrane, and Rodney (Pauline) Cochrane. In accordance with Jessie and Victor’s wishes, a private family service was held April 19, 2002 with Rev. Wm. Henry officiating. Ethel Delene McMillan At the Kingston General Hospital, May 1, 2002 with her family by her side. The former Ethel Smirle in her 82nd year. Beloved wife of the late Lyle McMillan whom she married in Chesterville 63 years ago. Loving mother of Bonnie (Mrs. Bert Johnston), Tom (Pat), Jim (Debbie) all of Kingston, Janice (Mrs. Lofty McCallum) of Harrowsmith and David (Shirley) of Bashaw, Alberta. She will be sadly missed by 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Mrs. McMillan was the beloved daughter of the late Tom and May Smirle and the late Elsie Handy. She is also survived by her sister Lillian Bowdery of Barrie, Ontario. Mrs. McMillan attended schools in Kemptville and Chesterville, Ontario, and also lived in Finch, Ontario, raising her family before moving to Kingston in 1957. Thelma Jeanette Sly Of RR#3 Elgin, Ontario, passed away on April 29, 2002, at the Carveth Care Nursing Center in Gananoque. Thelma was born in Battersea, Ontario, the daughter of the late Gus and Mabel Jardine, and lived in the Kingston area all her life. She was a housewife and was married for 66 years to Stanley Sly. Thelma attended St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Elgin. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and volunteering. Thelma is survived by her husband Stanley Sly, sons Hayden Sly, Henry and Linda Sly, Dale and Barb Sly, David and Susan Sly, Rodney and Susan Sly, Ron Sly (Cheryl), daughter Elaine and Marvin Clay, and sister Adelaide Carr. She was predeceased by her son Stanley Sly Jr., granddaughter Christine Sly, and brothers Cyril, Dave, Bill, Harold and Victor Jardine. The funeral was held on May 2, 2002. Rev. Jim Clark officiated.
