May 17, 1974 - May 25, 2002 It is with profound sadness that we announce Matt's passing after a courageous 10 month struggle with metastatic Melanoma. Beloved son of Paddy and the late Greg Erwin. Cherished brother and best friend of Kirstin, Aaron and John. Dearly loved grandson of May and Woody Erwin and the late Margaret and Ken McMullen. Dear nephew of Marc & Katherine Erwin, Tom & Angela McMullen, Donna & Bob Bray, Don & Edith McMullen and Richard & Lise McMullen. Special cousin to Bonnie, Kirsten, Ben, Robin, Jordan, Addy, Danitra, Andrea, Robert and Stephen. Matt's life was a gift and he leaves to mourn many friends, relatives and collegues, especially at the University of Ottawa. He possessed a brilliant mind, a free spirit, a kind heart and a strong social conscience. A talented writer, poet and folk singer, he loved life and displayed remarkable strength of character and maturity in the face of this aggressive cancer. Matt's illness and death have been especially difficult for his family, following the tragic loss of Greg. SINCLAIR, JAMES CHARTERIS Born August 28, 1919 in Toronto, Ontario to Mary and Robert died unexpectedly May 23, 2002 at home in Victoria, B.C. Jim leaves to celebrate his wonderful life, Gladys IIeen (nee Ellsmere) his love and sustenance of 59 years, daughter Karen Ann (David), grandchildren Fraser Charteris (Katherine), Amy Louise and Matthew David Gibson. He is also survived by siblings Isobel, Chris, Bob and their families. Jim was predeceased by his infant daughter Mary Elaine and his sister Mary. Jim served our country in WW II in the Princess Louise Dragoon Guard and settled with his family in Barrie, Ontario to farm for 20 years at Gladhill Farm. His character was quiet, sensitive and awesomely reliable. He is loved, respected and admired and we will miss this honest and true spirit in our lives. We just loved this guy. Jacqueline E. Gushuliak Jacqueline E. Gushuliak (nee Wreggitt) passed away in the early morning of Thursday, May 23, 2002. She had been born April 24, 1941 in Fort Frances, Ont. to Madeline Perreault (later McTavish) and Roy Wreggitt. Jackie was united in marriage to Matt Gushuliak on April 10, 1969. The two were constant companions and their lives centered around one another. Jackie was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, a warm and trusting woman whose faith was unwavering. Family was of prime importance to her. She took great pleasure in cooking and gardening, was an avid Bingo player, and thoroughly enjoyed vacationing in Las Vegas with Matt. She also was wonderfully creative, and always had a craft or redecorating project underway. Throughout the years, Jackie enjoyed music, television, the outdoors, and Sunday drives with her family. She was kind-hearted, loved to chat and reminisce, and would go out of her way for family and friends, particularly for her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed. Left behind to cherish her memory are Jackie’s beloved husband, Matt; daughters, Dawn (Shawn) Hayes, Terilynn Wreggitt, and Victoria Gushuliak; son, Matt Patrick (Jackie) Gushuliak; and grandchildren, Brittany, Cale, and Connor Hayes, and Haley Gushuliak. Also surviving are her sister, Kitty (Ken) Desrosiers; brother, Reggie Wreggitt; sister-in-law, Della Badiuk; brothers, Ray Wreggitt, Alvin Perreault, and Richard and Bob McTavish; sister, Elsie; and many cousins and friends. Jackie was predeceased by her parents; as well as by brothers, Bill and Terry Wreggitt. A private memorial service for family, conducted by Deacon Bill Adair of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, will be held Tuesday, May 28, 2002 in the afternoon. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial gathering Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at 6:30 p.m. at the East End Hall in Fort Frances. BEAUPARLANT, Amelia (nee Lavallee) In loving memory of Amelia (nee Lavallee) Beauparlant, 92 years, of St. Charles, who passed away Monday morning, May 27th, 2002 at her residence in St. Charles. Born in Warren, Amelia was a well known and liked St. Charles resident for the past 61 years. Also known as Mellie, she was one of the co-founders of the St. Charles U.C.F.O., gave freely of her time to the 4H Club, the St. Charles chapter of the Red Cross and while still driving, would visit the shut-ins. Amelia was mother, grandmother, gardener, knitter, sewer and farmer. She spent many happy hours in her beautiful flower garden. She will be missed by her family, friends and good neighbours. A special thank you to the Sudbury-Manitoulin V.O.N. and the Sudbury East Aide aux Seniors. Beloved wife of Mederic Beauparlant predeceased 1965. BUCHAN, Peter D. November 9, 1936 -May 24, 2002.Suddenly on Friday, May 24, 2002, after a lengthy illness, Peter Buchan died in his sixty-sixth year. Beloved husband of Norma, dear father of Laura (Peter Ward) and P.J., and proud "Pukka" of Nolan and Elise. Predeceased by his mother Sadie, his father Pete and his brother Walter. He is also survived by his brother Sandy (Vanesa) and sister-in-law Lee. Peter also leaves to mourn his extended family; Shirley and Larry Infanti, Elinor Ableson, Bill Ableson and Sharon Bartlet and many nieces and nephews. Peter was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and studied in England before completing his B.Sc. and B.Ed. degrees at the University of Manitoba. He and Norma cherished the friendships they made during this time early in their marriage friendships that continue to this day. A one-year contract to teach in Winnipeg became a 26 year teaching career with Seven Oaks School Division - primarily in Music, but with a few years teaching Math and Science. Peters love of music was reflected not only in his class work, but also in his extra-curricular involvement; school musicals, band trips, school choirs. Peter was an outstanding teacher who had a unique way of communicating with young people. He built strong relationships with his students and counted many among his friends long after they left his classroom. Peters musical career was long and varied. He sang with the Henry Engbrecht Singers and the Neil Harris Singers, performed at Rainbow Stage and the Hollow Mug for many years. He was tenor soloist at Knox United Church for 20 years. Peter also left his mark as a choral director some of the groups that enjoyed and benefited from his humour, encouragement and talent include the Caledonian Singers, Voices WEST, the Sweet Adelines, the Golden Chordsmen, the For Petes Sake Singers, the chorus at Rainbow Stage and the St. James Presbyterian Church Choir. Peters Solo work will be remembered by many, his church work, his profound Scottish repertoire and his more humourous material ("Have some Maderia, mdear") and patter songs. Peter was very proud of his Scottish heritage. He was a founding board member if the Scottish Association of Winnipeg and worked tirelessly for the Pavilion of Scotland for many years developing and directing the shows, building stages and sets, setting up, tearing down, no job too small (or too dirty). He also traveled to Scotland many times, first with Norma, later as a family and, finally, a much-enjoyed trip last summer with his son P.J. As Peters health problems limited his ability to walk and cycle, he turned more to driving trips with Norma around Manitoba and beyond. He applied his energy to more sedentary activities acrostic puzzles, reading, creating beautiful needlepoint pieces that will remain as family treasures, going for coffee with the many friends who helped him through this difficult period of his life and, importantly, working hard at "fixing stuff" for his grandson (especially the ever-popular black train). While we are relived that he no longer has to endure the pain and limitations that were increasingly with him over the last few years, his death leaves a large hole in many lives and he will be sincerely missed. A celebration of Peters life and music will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at Knox United Church, 400 Edmonton Street, the Reverend M. Beth McCutcheon officiating. The family invites any singers wishing to participate in the choir to be at the church at 2:45 p.m. for a rehearsal. McCALLUM, Margaret Jean (Duncan) Died suddenly, at home, on Sunday, May 26th, 2002, peacefully, in her sleep. Margaret was born in Bristol, England and raised in Aberdeen and St. Andrew’s, Scotland. She met her loving husband Victor Ian in Thetford Mines, Quebec soon after immigrating to Canada. They were married February 19, 1940. Victor predeceased her January 5, 2000. Saunders Former Professional Hockey Player On Tuesday, May 21, 2002. Ted was the last member of the NHL Ottawa Senators and appeared on the cover of the NHL 1999-2000 Yearbook. He played hockey for 11 years, finishing his career in the 1939-40 season with QSHL Ottawa Senators and the 1940-41 season with the Ottawa Commandos when they won the Allen Cup. Ted spent 4 years overseas during the Second World War and played the game he loved into his 60's with the Oldtimers. He was well known during his long life in Ottawa and was active into his late 80's. He spent his life living in Ottawa where he was born. A former member of the Riverside Golf Club and the Ottawa Curling Club, he also loved to play bridge and poker and in his youth loved to fish and hunt game birds. Ted had been in good health and died peacefully in Aurora, Ontario with his oldest grandson at his side. Married for 62 years, his wife Grace Power predeceased him in 1997. He outlived his 5 brothers and 3 sisters and his father Tommy by 1 year. He is survived by his son, 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She obtained Honours for her Bachelor of Environmental Studies from University of Waterloo, graduating in 1977. Mary was very devoted and proud of her work which included Industry Canada, Health Canada and Natural Resources Canada. Mary was a member of the President's Alumni Council at the University of Waterloo and active Alumni Affairs. Mary was an avid photographer and enjoyed many outdoor activities. She shared her great love of nature with all. She will be sadly missed by many friends, family and colleagues. SEMEL - Abraham, 1915 - 2002 Abraham, passed away peacefully at the Beverly Care Centre on Sunday, May 26, 2002 at the age of 87 years. Predeceased by his loving wife Frances and her sister Lillian Bell, Abe is survived by hFrancesis children, David (Patricia Bucciero) of Ottawa, Richard (Paddy Meade) of St. Albert, Matthew (Michaela) of Calgary and Margaret (Adam Singer) of Calgary and 9 grandchildren, Danielle, Aimee, Briar, Jared, Megan, Leah, Reid, Rachel and Hanna. He is also survived by his sister Evelyn Berg (Al) of Toronto. Abe was born in New York City on May 14, 1915 and moved to Ontario in 1917 where he lived until 1985 when he and Fran moved to Calgary. Abe served with the British Army in the Middle East in WWII returning to Canada to marry in 1946. He valued honesty and integrity as life’s greatest virtues. As a life long learner, always with a book in his hand, he thrived on the issues and discussions around him. He was president of the Peterborough B’nai Brith Lodge in 1956/57 and before that a leader in Young Judea. Donna's loss will also be felt by Uncles Alex and Murdie McRae of Vankleek Hill. Lucile is lovingly remembered by her husband and best friend Frank Abbott, his children, Alice (Desmond), Bill (Amy) and James. Lucile was predeceased by her father Alphonse Matteau, her mother Maria Campagna and her brother Fernand. She will be missed by her brothers, Leopold (Andree), Antonio (Laurette) and Lionel (Lili), and her sisters Antoinette (Ben) and Lorraine (Maurice). Nicole, Johanne, Jean, Sylvie, Yvan, Renelle, Chantal and Luc also cherish fond memories of tante Lucile. Lucile was an invigorating friend to many, a proud Quebecoise and a proud federalist. Sincere thanks to the staff of the Elisabeth Bruyere Health Centre, the Victorian Order of Nurses and the Bayshore Health Care for the care and compassion shown to Lucile. In lieu of flowers, it is her wish that donations be made in her memory to the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind or the Canadian Ski Museum. MADDOX, COL. William Albert, CD. (June 29, 1922 to May 25, 2002). After a long and courageous battle with cancer The Colonel passed away at home with his cherished wife Diane by his side. He joins his first wife Grace in heaven and leaves their children; John (Joan), Alan (Karen), Pam Odam (Tom) and grandchildren; Jeff, Alyce, Kristen, Heather, David and Johnathon. A special thank you to the palliative care team and especially Dr. Kendal and all the family and friends that have been so supportive during this painful time. The Colonel served as a Royal Marine Commando in WWII (UK) and in Canada as a reservist; initially as a member of the Queens York Rangers. He commanded the 49th Field Regt in Sault Ste. Marie and ultimately Commanded Northern Ontario District in 1967. He was a founding director of the Army Cadet League (Ontario) and served as Chairman of the Associate Members of the Cdn Forces’ Staff School and then Cdn Forces College in Toronto, and remained a member until his passing. Alongside his distinguished military career in Canada, Bill managed a successful sales career with IBM Canada. Friends may call at the R. S. Kane Funeral Home (6150 Yonge Street, north of Goulding) on Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. A military funeral service will be held at All Souls Anglican Church (15 Clairtrell Rd. corner of Sheppard and Bayview) on Monday, June 3, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. Private cremation.
