Our cherished mother Beatrice Anne Hutchison, nee Giles, had a long and wonderful life. Our mother was a woman of grace, a woman of substance, a woman of valour. She was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, on January 19, 1920. She died peacefully in Ottawa on May 16, 2002. Bea was predeceased by her beloved husband of 56 years, Colin "Jim" Hutchison of Big Beaver, Saskatchewan. For over 25 years from their marriage in 1942, she excelled in her career as the wife of an officer of the Canadian Air Force and Army. With him, she travelled to many of the major military installations across Canada. They also had international postings to the United States and the former Soviet Union. She is survived by her two children and their families: her son Frederick "Rick" Hutchison, his wife Janet and their daughter Jennifer, all of Calgary; her daughter Barbara White of Seattle, Washington, and her children, Lycia Lyons, Jason Lyons, Chandra Moy, and Linsi Moy. She was blessed with four great-grandchildren: Alexander Lyons, John Schweer, Jaylynn Lyons and Jordan Hutchison-Schmidt. She embraced life and all it had to offer. A loyal friend, she was always ready to lend a hand with a kind word and a smile. She helped people achieve their dreams. She was courageous and she faced things head-on. After successfully beating cancer, Bea passed along that strength of purpose to others facing adversity. She was resourceful and met challenges with grace and good humour. She was an avid sports fan. Even in her later years, was athletic and an accomplished golfer with more than one hole-in-one on her scorecard. She was spirited and fully participated in life. She treasured her family relationships and had long lasting friendships over the years. Bea was bold and energetic to the last days of her life. She lived life with gusto and style and lived fully and well. We are fortunate to have had her in our lives. Strength and honour are her clothing; And she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; And in her tongue is the law of kindness. Her children rise up, and call her blessed; Her husband also and he praised her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but Thou Bea thou excellest them all. AFC, CD Group Captain, RCAF (ret.) At 85 years of age, passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus, Saturday, May 18, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife Anne Alleen (Aitken), two sons, Traven (Brisbane, Australia) and Robert (Ottawa), and his sisters Ethel Radcliffe (Saskatoon), Florence Klaehn (Unity, Sask.) and Lucy Jean Pinkerton (Surrey). Known as Brodie by his many friends he was born to farm life in Lashburn, Saskatchewan on September 20, 1916 and raised along with 11 siblings. At an early age he showed a keen interest in pursuing higher education and at 17, enrolled in the University of Saskatchewan from which he received a degree in Civil Engineering in 1937. Immediately following University he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force where he enjoyed a long and distinguished career. Brodie loved to fly: Tiger Moths, Harvards, T33s and Sabres, he felt right at ease while in the air. In the RCAF Brodie served in many capacities: a flight instructor with the British Air Commonwealth Training Program at Uplands; Commanding Officer, Central Experimental and Proving Establishment at Rockcliffe; Base Commander at (2) Fighter Wing, Grostenquin, France; and finally he finished his career with the RCAF in 1968 as Director, Flight Safety, in Ottawa. Never one to be idle, he immediately began a second career as a mathematic teacher with the Ottawa Board of Education. Brodie enjoyed the purity of numbers and found tremendous joy and satisfaction in sharing this love with his students. His teaching career, which was spent entirely at Sir John A. MacDonald High School in Ottawa, spanned 13 years and he finally retired in 1982. During his life, Brodie was always interested in sports and recreation, both as a participant and as a spectator. Enjoying hockey, football, and particularly golf and curling he found terrific satisfaction at the rink, at the stadium and on the links. A founding member of the Hylands Golf Club, in his retirement Brodie could be found with his foursome on the course almost daily. A willing volunteer, he spent 2 years as Club Captain and as well, participated on various club committees. He always found time to be with his wife, sons and his many friends. He revelled in their triumphs and commiserated with their tragedies. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. There will be no visitation at the request of the deceased. Memorial Service to be announced. Special thanks to the Ottawa Hospital General Campus staff for their care and compassion. GARVEY, Reverend Raymond Joseph (Retired Priest inthe Peterborough Diocese and Member of the Bishop Francis A. Marrocco 4th degree Knights of Columbus Assembly) - Peacefully at PRHC, Hospital Drive on Friday, May 17th, 2002 in his 80th year. Loving brother of Fred and wife Teresa and dear brother-in-law of Adrian Hurley and wife Mary. Dear uncle of several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by his parents Joseph Dennis Garvey and Mary Helen (Winnie) O’Brien and a sister Mae Hurley. Father Garvey was ordained priest at the Cathedral of St. Peter-in-Chains on May, 22, 1948. He served as assistant pastor at the Cathedral Peterborough from 1948-1953, St. Michael’s Cobourg from 1953-1956. He taught at St. Peter’s High School from 1956-1962. He served as Pastor at St. Paul’s Gravenhurst from 1962-1970, the Cathedral, Peterborough from 1970-1974, Sacred Heart, Trout Creek from 1974-1981, and St. Paul’s Norwood from 1981 until his retirement in 1993. He taught religion at St. Peter’s High School and coached basketball and football, leading St. Peter’s to a Junior and Senior COSSA championship. He was a well known avid golfer and softball player. As a Knights of Columbus player he won the M.V.P. of the City Softball in the fifties. Visitation at DUFFUS FUNERAL HOME, 431 George Street South from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday. Born in Ottawa, July 29, 1917, passed away in Nanaimo, BC, May 15, 2002. Bill was the son of the late William George and Florence (Army) Dube. He was predeceased by brothers Maynard, Edward, Robert, Walter, George, and sisters Phyllis and Joy Smith, daughter Helen Buklin and son Maynard. He will be sadly missed by his wife Audrey, his devoted dog Toby, daughter Brenda (Ted) Yeomans, Ottawa, sister Rae Barclay, Ottawa, and step-sons Chris, Nanaimo, and Wayne, Calgary, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Bill served in the Canadian Army from 1939 to 1966 in Canada, the UK, NW Europe, and the Far East and retired with the rank of Warrant Officer 2. Of Comox (formerly of Ottawa and Nanaimo) passed away peacefully in St. Joseph's Hospital on Tuesday, May 14, 2002; age 82. Predeceased by his loving wife, Mary (nee Furlong) and his son James. Survived by his sons: Larry Murphy of White Rock, B.C., Joe (Cathy) Murphy of Dartmouth, N.S., Peter (Sylvia) Murphy of Courtenay, B.C. and his daughters Doris (Bill) Reilly, Zita Murphy, Debbie Murphy of Ottawa, ON and Mary Murphy of Kingston, ON, his grandchildren Victor, Cindy, Lynda, Jennifer, Lori, Mary-Emma, Ruari, Jeremy, Erin and Brodie. Also survived by his brothers: Father James Murphy, S.J., Aubrey (Edna) Murphy and Barry Murphy, his sister Doris Stanton, many nieces and nephews, family and friends. Larry was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, married Mary and started their family and moved to Ottawa. He worked for the Dept. of Public Works from which he retired and moved to B.C. West Coast. He served in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve (war time) and for years in the Naval Reserve. Larry enjoyed retirement, camping and fishing and visits with his family, pondering his good fate while smoking his pipe. Thanks to all the staff at St. Joseph's Hospital. Memorial Mass was held on Saturday May 18, at 10:00 a.m. from Chirst the King Roman Catholic Church, 1599 Tunner Drive, Courtenay with Father Joe Killoran, celebrant. BROWNE (Nee URTICHION) DIANE At Bradford Place Nursing Home, Bradford, Ont., May 11, 2002, after a long illness, in her 94th year. Born in Odessa, Russia, she escaped the Revolution with her family to homestead in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She taught the primary grades in the 1930’s at Maybank Public School, in Toronto. She led a productive life as mother, excellent cook, astute bridge player and competitive sailor with Captain Bligh aboard The NINA II. An adventurous traveller, she visited Russia, China and Australia. Predeceased by her husband, George Herbert Browne, she is sadly missed by her daughter June Chambers (David) of Bond Head, son John Browne of Toronto, grandchildren Bruce Chambers, (Terry), Sarah and great grandson Kent of Cookstown.
