LACHAPELLE, Exilia (nee Philippe), 1915-2002 - In loving memory of Exilia Lachapelle who passed away at the St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Elliot Lake, on Monday, May 20, 2002 at the age of 87. Cherished wife of David Lachapelle. Réjeanne (née Lavoie) Moffet, 105 Devonshire, Kapuskasing, died at Sensenbrenner Hospital on May 17, 2002. She was 67 years old. Mrs. Moffet was born Oct. 13, 1934 in Kapuskasing. She worked as a housewife. She enjoyed curling, watching hockey, and ceramics. She was a leader in the brownies and while in Ottawa she worked at the Ottawa Hunt Club Golf Course and for Olsten Health Care. Mrs. Moffet was predeceased by her father Théodore Lavoie and sister Jeannine Tessier. She is survived by husband Major (Air) Désiré Moffet CD3 (retired) of Kapuskasing, daughter Rose-Marie (Dr. Wilson) Asfora of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, son Michel of Kingston and mother Simone Lavoie of Kap. Also surviving are sisters Réa Giguère of Thunder Bay and Denise Lavoie of Winnipeg, Manitoba and brother Léo Lavoie of Thunder Bay. Mrs. Moffet had four grandchildren: Wesley, Eloise, Daniel and Dale. Rev. Pierre Gosselin directed the funeral service at Immaculée Conception. Cremation at the Hillcrest Crematorium in Matheson.

1921 - 2002 Bob passed away quietly at home on May 21, after a short illness. As in life his last days were met with courage, dignity and kindness. Bob was truly a precious gift and will be missed by everyone who knew him. Bob's tireless strength and friendship was felt by the many people whose lives he touched. Funeral services for Hearst resident Charles Eugène Pelletier, 76, of Kitchener St. were held May 18, 2002. He died May 15 at Notre-Dame Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born Oct. 1, 1925 in St-Honoré, Que., he came to the Hearst area in 1993. He retired from working in the bush in 1980. Family described him as one who liked people and youngsters, and who respected people as they were. A member of the Club soleil des aîné-e-s seniors centre, he enjoyed playing cards, bowling and darts. He leaves his wife Denise (née Lévesque) Pelletier of Hearst, sisters Antoinnette and Gilberte Pelletier, both of St-Marc-du-Lac-Long, Que., and brothers Adrien (Lucille) and Paul-Émile Pelletier, also of St-Marc-du-Lac-Long. Rev. Rémi Lessard officiated the morning service at the Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral.

Ruth Winnifred Russell Ruth Winnifred Russell passed away peacefully Sunday, May 19, 2002 at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby, Ont. with her girls around her. Ruth, the heart of her family, was devoted to her role as wife, mother, and grandmother, following a career as a registered nurse. She expressed her caring nature through her community volunteer work. The cottage at Balsam Lake was her special place, where years of family gatherings nurtured all. She was the wife of the late Dr. Andrew (1999); and dear mother of Barbara (Chris) Raven of Burlington, Mary (David) Hickling of Fort Frances, Diane (John) Kiser of Braeside, Joan Russell of Toronto, and Margaret (Richard) VanGelder of St. Catharines. She also was loving grandmother of Andrew, Mark, Matthew, Heather, Jason, Brad, Scott, Stephanie, Ryan, and Hilary; and sister of Helen (Albert) Scafetti, Karen (Mike) Piano, all of Hamilton, and Peter (Bobbi) Clark of Hagersville. Cremation has taken place. (nee Christie) 1913 - 2002 Laura was born March 11, 1913 to the late John A. Christie and the late Ada Patterson. She attended Kemptville Public School, Kemptville High School, University of Toronto and Ottawa Teachers' College (1935). Laura's teaching career began in Burritt's Rapids in 1935, where she taught until her marriage to Ernest M. Winford of Brockville in 1940. She taught at Cornwall Public School (1941-1944), Prescott Public School (1950-1951), Kemptville Public School (1952 - 1956) and City View Public School (1957 - 1962). Laura became the first female Primary Supervisor (1963-1968) for the Nepean Board of Education which later became the Ottawa-Carleton Board of Education. In 1945, Laura and Ernie became the proud parents of John Richard Winford (deceased July 1999). While living in Brockville, during her non-teaching years (1945-1950) raising her son, Laura was also involved in many civic activities. She was elected president of the Brockville Theatre Guild, and was also acting and directing during which time the Brockville Theatre Guild won the Eastern Ontario Drama Festival. "Our Town" was taken to Calgary, AB with full cast of 37 to compete in the Dominion Drama Festival. She was chair of the I.O.D.E. where she also produced spring and fall fashion shows in conjunction with the Brockville merchants and John Stetson Co. who designed the hats for the ensembles. The proceeds of the fashion shows were used to introduce the first bursary sponsored by the I.O.D.E. in Brockville. Laura was the author of a popular book, Let's Get Ready, while with the Nepean Board of Education for which she was honored by an invitation to speak on primary education and on her book, to the annual meeting of the International Reading Association in Anaheim, California. There she had the joy to work with several leading primary educators. After the death of her husband, Ernest M. Winford in 1968, she left her career in education to marry Mr. William Collie Sr. of Collie's Woolen Mill in Appleton, Ontario. Hence, began her yearly trips to Florida as her winter haven. After the sudden death of Mr. Collie in 1973, Laura married Mr. George Sheard of Sheard Fabrics Inc. of Coaticook, Quebec in 1975. Following Mr. Sheard's death in 1985 Laura returned to her roots and bought a cottage near Brockville. Mr. Otto C. Smith, her very good friend from Florida, loved and comforted her dearly until the end. Laura B. Sheard was content. Her tremendous faith in the Lord has sustained her through all of her life's passages. We will miss you Laura. May you go in peace, for you have been a beacon of light for all of us through your honorable, righteous and loving examples. God Bless. Laura is survived by a daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. DEWAR, Peter Stewart April 23, 1920 - May 20, 2002 Devoted husband of Betty. Loving father of Michael Peter (Diane), John Peter and Carole Denise (Jim). Predeceased by his son Timothy Scott (January 25, 1968). Peter graduated from Patterson Collegiate and then the University of Toronto as a Mechanical Engineer. He began his lifelong career with Ford in Windsor; transferred to Ford U.S. Tractor Operations and finally served many years as Engineering Manager for Ford of Europe. He retired in 1980 and following a brief assignment with Ford in Pakistan, returned to Canada where he enjoyed many years of travel, golf and sailing. Respected and admired by many, he was a steadfast friend, father and husband. Cremation has taken place in Windsor and a Memorial Service will be held at a later date

Adelard Smith, 8-28 Riverside Dr., Kapuskasing, died at home on May 17, 2002. He was 78 years old. Mr. Smith was born June 1, 1923 in Bathurst, N.B. He worked for the Town of Kapuskasing. He enjoyed playing crib and cards. He was predeceased by his wife Marie-Anne. Funeral services for longtime Hearst area resident and retired contractor Robert Charbonneau, 78, of Kitchener St. were held May 18, 2002. He died May 15 at Notre-Dame Hospital following a brief illness. Born April 10, 1924 in St-Arsène, Quebec, nea Mon he came to the Hearst area in 1934. Owner of Charbonneau Construction, he retired in 1979. An active cross-country skier for 15 years, he was a member of the Hearst Cross-Country Ski Club board and enjoyed listening to jazz music and reading. Also surviving are: his sisters Pierrette (Roland) Racine of Montreal, Gisèle (Lionel) Fortier of Rouyn-Noranda, Que., and Huguette (Roger) Paquin of Kapuskasing; brothers Jacques (Huguette) of Montreal and Claude Charbonneau of Hull, Que.; and granddaughters Andréanne, Gabrièle and Janine as well as grandsons Julien and Daniel Jr. Rev. Beatrice Abbott, 93, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at La Verendrye General Hospital. She was born Sept. 24, 1908 in Stevington, England to the late John and Sarah Curtis. Beatrice came to Canada on March 4, 1920 and landed in Nova Scotia. She later moved to Emo and then to Fort Frances. She was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 Ladies Auxiliary, a member of Knox United Church, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, and bowling, and was a member of the Fort Frances Bowling League. She also was a Queen at T.O.P.S. Beatrice was united in marriage to Stanley Herbert Abbott, who predeceased her Nov. 2, 1984. She also was predeceased by her son, Ronald; four brothers, and a granddaughter; Shelley. She is survived by her children, James (Beatrice) of Palmerston, Ont., Darlene (Jimmie) Doris of St. Helens, Ore., William (Carolyn) of Peterborough, Ont., Douglas (Mary Ann) of Salmon Arm, B.C., and Carolyn Abbott of Fort Frances, Ont. Also surviving is her daughter-in-law, Nell Abbott, of North Vancouver, B.C.; 12 grandchildren, Rhonda, Curtis, Corey, Cathy, Jamie, Bonnie, Randy, Lorie, Cheryl, Karen, Doug, and Debbie; 25 great-grandchildren; one brother, Johnathan (Jean) Curtis of Emo; two sisters, Dorothy Larson of Seattle, Wash., and Connie (Milton) Stroble of Santa Fe Springs, Calif.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Peacefully at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, Grimsby with her girls around her son Sunday, May 19, 2002. Ruth, the heart of her family, was devoted to her role as wife mother and grandmother, following a career as a registered nurse. She expressed her caring nature through her community volunteer work. The cottage at Balsam Lake was her special place where years of family gatherings nurtured all.
