Sadly, passed away peacefully, at the Villa Marconi in Ottawa, on Friday, May 17, 2002, in his 74th year, from complications of Parkinsons' Disease. Predeceased by his parents Thomas Grant Major and Ruth Chapman Major. Survived by his dear aunt Margaret Major and her family. Devoted husband and soulmate of Marjorie Ruwald Major (nee McGregor). Loving step-father of David Ruwald (Janice) and the late Michael Ruwald (Bonni). Precious Grampa of Landon (Nicole), Erika and Chelsea Lackey-Ruwald. Bill will also be missed by his caregivers, past and present: Diane Moreau, Margaret Bruce, Judy Bach, Audrey Henderson, Prely Escano and the rest of the "Retire-At-Home" staff. Bill attended McMaster, Western and Carleton Universities, receiving degrees in Music, English and History. He worked as a music critic, was a newspaper editor and lastly, as a teacher with the Ottawa and Carleton School Boards. Our thanks to all the compassionate care/health workers involved with Bill over the last few years, "Visiting Homemakers" (Catherine and Zoufan), the staff at the Villa Marconi and to the Rev. Wayne Thomas, his wife Daphne and the Anglican Congregation of the Church of the Resurrection, whose support has sustained us through these difficult years. STEVENSON, Peter Lewis With great sadness the family wishes to announce that Peter Lewis Stevenson died peacefully on May 14, 2002 at War Memorial Hospital, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, after a valiant struggle against emphysema and cancer. Born July 23, 1919 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, the only child of Dr. Lewis and Helen Stevenson (nee Campbell), Pete attended Lincoln School, New York City, Upper Canada College, Toronto and Queens University, Kingston before enlisting with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941. He attained the rank of Flying Officer and was attached to RAF, Squadron 166, as a bomber pilot with 99 operations during World War II. During his service he received the 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, War Medal 1939-45 and Mentioned-in-Despatches. He was awarded RCAF Operational Wings for gallant service in action against the enemy. Married to Doris Joyce Huntley in 1944 (predeceased, 1989), Pete enjoyed 45 years of journalism, gardening and travel with his life-long companion. Pete worked as a reporter at the Bennington (VT) Banner, Albany (NY) Times Union, Lock Haven (PA) Express and Allentown (PA) Morning Call as well as editor at the Warren (PA) Times Mirror and Elyria (OH) Chronicle. During his career he won several awards for investigative reporting. Pete is survived by two sons Markham (Mary-Lou Morassut) of Sault Ste. Marie, Canada and Gordon (late Karen) of Alameda, CA and five grandchildren Justin, Matthew, Devin, Margo and Maia. Pete will be greatly missed and his family will continue to feed the finches and hummingbirds at Sand Bay in his memory. Lucy Agnes Burns After a brief illness, Lucy passed away April 24, 2002 at Providence Manor. She was in her 99th year. Lucy was born in Kingston where she lived most of her life with the exception of a short period in her earlier years when her family lived in Toronto, where she worked for Simpsons Department Store. Her experience there helped her to secure a position with Stacey’s Department store in Kingston. She attended St. Vincents Academy and Notre Dame High School. After her marriage to John F. Burns she stayed at home to raise their children. After they were out on their own, she went to work at the Kingston Memorial Centre canteen She was a member of Holy Family Church, the Catholic Womens League, Legion of Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help and various auxiliaries. In addition to her church, her special interests included her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Prior to moving to Providence Manor in 1998, she thoroughly enjoyed her long walks at her cottage at Howe Island. In 1986 her husband John F. Burns passed away. She was also predeceased by her parents John and Elizabeth Pearson; brothers, Norman, Edward and Frank; sisters, Mae Lawless, Kathleen Norris and Gladys Clayton and grandson John Anthony Burns. Lucy is survived by her sons Donald (Sylvia, deceased), Edward (Teresa), Thomas (Mary); daughter, Marian (Ken Miller); sister, Marie Salsbury; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The funeral was held at Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel at Providence Manor on April 26, 2002 with Father David Norris, SJ. of Toronto Father Charles Gazeley and Father Julian Kazowka of Kingston officiating. B.R.E. Former resident of Ottawa. Passed away in Belize Central America as a result of a highway accident on May 15, 2002. Bob was born in Belize, January 15, 1954. He is survived by his wife Nancy (daughter of Doug Conner and the late Betty Conner of Ottawa), his 2 daughters, Elizabeth (Beth) and Stephanie; Also his 2 granddaugthers, Shannon and Sheridan - Beth's daughters. He is also survived by his parents Rev. Percy and Germina Slusher and many brothers and sisters in Belize and the U.S.A. He will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews but certainly by his 2 granddaugthers, especially Shannon the older. He will be fondly missed by his sister-in-law Judy Little of Ottawa - Nancy's only sister. Judy was a great encourager in their work and ministry over the years. Bob graduated from Steinbach Bible College (S.B.C.) with his Degree B.R.E. (Bachelor of Religious Education and along with Nancy returned to Belize as Missionaries. Nancy graduated from New Brunswick Bible Institute (N.B.B.I.) and Fredericton Teachers College and had previously served as a teacher in Orange Walk Town, Belize, where they met and were married. Bob pastored the Local Evangelical Church in Ladyville and continued to teach at King's College under the Gospel Missionary Union (G.M.U.). Bob's daughter Stephanie is presently attending Steinbach Bible College in Manitoba. The Funeral and Burial will take place in Belize District on Monday, May 20, 2002. March 6, 1952 - May 15, 2002 Peacefully on Thursday, May 15 after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Loving husband of Marilyn Reddigan and adoring father of Nicholas. February 5, 1913-May 10, 2002. We say goodbye to a true gentleman. His quick wit, generosity and love of life touched all who knew him, even in his last days. William (Bill) Herd died on Friday, May 10, 2002 at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus, in his 90th year. Devoted husband for 61 years of Eleanor (Gregory) Herd. Beloved father of two sons, Richard and wife Barbara (Ottawa), and Robert and wife Sharon (Burnaby, B.C. Joyfully remembered by four grandsons, Christopher and wife Emily (Houston, Texas), Alexander (Lexington, Kentucky), Jeremy and Graeme (Burnaby, B.C.). Survived by sisters Jean Cole (Ninette, Manitoba) and Annabelle Klein (Pleasantville, New York). Fondly remembered by sister-in-law Betty and husband Bill Gansler (Sarnia, Ontario) and sister-in-law Mollie Gregory (widow of George) (Nanaimo, B.C.) and by many nieces and nephews. Cremation in Ottawa will be followed by a memorial service in the A. W. Miles Chapel, Humphrey Funeral Home, 1403 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002, followed by interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Section 34, Plot 245 at 11:00 a.m. (enter main entrance off Mount Pleasant Avenue). Bill was born in Glasgow, Scotland to William Herd and Mary Cowan Moyes, and emigrated to Peterborough, Ontario as an infant. He was apprenticed at the Canadian General Electric Company, then worked as a draftsman for the Trane Company (Toronto) and English Electric Company (St. Catharines). During WW II, Bill's skills with precision drawings were utilized by Research Enterprises. After six months post-war with the Eastman Kodak Company, he laboured for R.P. Allsop and Associates, Consulting Engineers, until his first retirement in 1977. From 1978 to 1990, Bill contracted his services and expertise as a veteran specification writer to Angus Engineering (Toronto) and Stevenson, Raines (Calgary). Bill and Eleanor returned East to Ottawa in June 2001. Bill missed attending the Calgary Stampede for the first time in 11 years. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Lung Association, or charity of your choice, will be appreciated by the family.
