(Bruce) Ina Thompson, surrounded by her family, passed away on April 14, 2002, after a determined 16 year battle with cancer. Ina was born in Shawinigan, Quebec on March 27, 1936 and moved to Deep River with her parents Tom and Augustine Bruce in 1949. Ina went to High School in Pembroke and graduated from the Ottawa Civic Hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1957. Ina married Vic Thompson in 1958 and moved back to Deep River in 1960. In addition to her nursing duties, Ina was very active in a number of family run businesses including Deep River Stationery and Gift Shop (1969-1997), Toy Town (1970-1975), Sears Catalogue outlet (1971-1993), Bookworld (1977-1993), The Tannery Shoe Shop (1982-1992), The Strand Realty Company (1985-present). In addition, Ina was a very active member of the community and served as a member and former President of the Deep River Ladies Hospital Auxiliary and as a volunteer at the Pt. Alexander Library. Ina leaves behind her devoted husband, Vic, her three children David and his wife Janice Francisco of Ottawa, Linda of Iroquois and Kathy of Toronto and her two cherished grandchildren Jonathan and Nicholas. Also survived by her daughter-in-law, Shelly Ostep of Deep River. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Deep River, on Saturday, April 20 at 2:00 p.m. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Deep River and District Hospital are appreciated. Funeral services for Hearst Notre-Dame Hospital resident Aurore Marie (née Trudeau) Michaud are to be held April 20 in Hearst. She died April 10, 2002 at age 63 following a lengthy illness. Born March 26, 1939 in Piopolis, Quebec, she came to Hearst in 1970. Described as always ready to help others, she enjoyed painting, wood sculpture, the outdoors, and fishing and hunting. Predeceased by her husband Jean-Claude Michaud in 1988, she leaves a son Marc Michaud of southern Ontario, sisters Simone and Rolande, a brother Roland Michaud, two sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. Rev. Rémi Lessard is to officiate the service at the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral. Interment will be at the Monseigneur Grenier Cemetery.

Emilia Cayouette, North Centennial Manor, Kapuskasing, died at the manor on April 13, 2002. She was 87 years old. Mrs. Cayouette was born Sept. 9, 1914 in Chelmsford. She worked as a housewife. She enjoyed rocking in her chair and playing cards. Mrs. Cayouette was predeceased by her first husband Alfred Noel, her second husband Emile Cayouette, son Jean Louis Noel and daughter Mariette Chartrand. She is survived by daughters Marie-Rose (Jacques) Plourde and Louisette (Marcel) Dufour, both of Fauquier and Célina (Léo) Chevalier of Kap; sons Albini Noel and Yvan (Françoise) Noel, both of Kap; and sisters Lucia Mayer of Kap and Lucienne Marceau of Smooth Rock Falls. Mrs. Cayouette had 17 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Rev. Gilles Gosselin directed the funeral service at Immaculée Conception. Mrs. Cayouette will be interred at the Kapuskasing cemetery.

Longtime former Hearst public school principal Clayton Lynn Brown of Waterloo, Ont. died April 10, 2002 at the A. R. Goudie Eventide Home in Kitchener just weeks before his 90th birthday. Born May 7, 1912 in Fordwich (north of Kitchener-Waterloo), he served with RCAF Intelligence during the Second World War, mostly in Newfoundland/Labrador and for a while in Quebec. He had earlier studied engineering at Queen's University before transferring to teacher's college in Stratford. Arriving in Mead, south of Hearst, after the war to teach, he moved to Hearst Public School, where he taught Grades 7-8 and was acting principal and then principal until his retirement in 1970 at age 57. He and wife Vera attended the July 1, 1972 ceremonial opening of the expanded, renamed Clayton Brown Public School. An avid NHL and local hockey fan and bridge player, ardent reader and follower of the stock market, and later a gardener and traveller, he was described as, quiet, kind and understanding. An active member of St. Paul's United Church and Branch 173 Hearst Legion, he was a Mason for 68 years, travelling regularlay to meetings in Kapuskasing with fellow Hearst members. He and future wife Vera (nee Morris) Helm met in 1968 through a mutual friend at the Kirkland Lake brokerage office, where both would go to view stock market quotations on display. In 1970, they married in Toronto and in 1979 moved to Waterloo. "He took a great personal interest in each child," former longtime Clayton School teacher and vice principal Katie Larouche, now of Trout Lake, recalls. "He almost felt like Hearst was his home, he was there so long," wife Vera said, adding that many students later thanked him for encouraging them to continue their education. As cost-saving measures for the then-public school board, which at that time received little in government grant monies, he for many years declined salary increases and would ask students to bring their own baseball equipment for school use, former longtime trustee Nick Stolz recalls. The Browns came to town for Hearst's 75th anniversary festivities in 1997 and several times for teachers' retirement parties. Predeceased by his brother Jack Brown of Hanover, Mr. Brown leaves his wife Vera, a sister Elva Cooper of Fordwich, and sister-in-law Kay Brown of Hanover. Rev. Dave Jagger is to officiate this Saturday's memorial service at 1:30 p.m. at Fordwich United Church, following a Masonic Order service. Interment will be at the Fordwich Cemetery.

Late of Regina and formerly of Ottawa passed away quietly on Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at the age of 93. She was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Katherine Bergman; brothers Henry, Louis, William and Joseph Bergman; sisters Annie Ament, Katherine Yeske, Frances Bergman and Wilhelmine Morin. Elsa was born in Langenburg, SK. She taught school until 1942 when she joined the Federal Civil Service in Ottawa. She worked for the federal government - payroll division until her retirement in the mid-sixties. During her life she traveled the world extensively, knit hundreds of baby sets for the church bazaars, loved all sports, and did crossword puzzles by the hour. She lived her life with dignity, caring always for her fellow man. Elsie is survived by her sister-in-law, Josephine Bergman of Langenburg; "Aunt Elsie" will be lovingly remembered by her nieces Joan (Jim) Kortje, Susan (Arnold) Shives, Marie (Al) Wright, Marilyn (Pat) Hodgkinson, Mariwyn (Harry) Carter, Delores (Al) Lipoth and Evelyn Stewart; nephews, Jim (Delores) Ament; Roy (Maureen), Don (Judy) and Murray (Janice) Yeske, Bill (June), Dick (Birtie) and Berny (Ligaya) Bergman; Ken, Clifford (Bev) and Dennis (Debbie) Bergman and Jim Morin plus many great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. LOUISE LANGTRY Louise Langtry, 101, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, 550 Osborne St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Saturday, April 13, 2002 at La Verendrye General Hospital. She was born Oct. 22, 1900 in Emo, Ont. to the late Charles and Elizabeth Fisher. Mrs. Langtry lived all her life in the district and had lived in Fort Frances since 1926. She was a member of Knox United Church in Fort Frances and a past member of the United Church Women. She enjoyed playing Bingo and bridge, and crocheting. In her earlier years, she had a huge vegetable garden at her home. Louise is survived by her daughter, Jean Eisenzoph, and her son, Jack (Florence) Langtry, all of Fort Frances, Ont. Also surviving is her grandson, Derek Langtry of London, Ont.; brother, Russell (Mary) Fisher of Emo, Ont.; sister-in-law, Leona Larson of Victoria, B.C.; brother-in-law, Norris (Gertie) Langtry of Fort Frances, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was united in marriage in 1926 to Jack Langtry, who predeceased her in 1973. She also was predeceased by her daughter, Thelma Knotts on March 3, 1979; sons-in-law, Frank “Ike” Eisenzoph and Alfred “Laffy” Knotts; grandson, Lee Eisenzoph; sisters, Myrtle (Paddy) Palmer, Irene (Roy) Davis, and Olive (Bob) Craig; brothers, Arthur (Mabel) Fisher, Milton (Mary) Fisher, and Oscar Fisher; brothers-in-law, Ben (Minnie) Langtry, Don Larson, and Bill Larson; and sisters-in-law, Birdie (Alex) Chercover, Gladys (Jim) Sullivan, and Annie Ellen Langtry. Memorial services will be held Thursday, April 18, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, with Rev. Marietta Marshall officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances beside her husband, Jack Langtry. Honourary pallbearers will be all of Louise’s family and friends. (nee Langman) Peacefully passed away at Forest Hill, Kanata, on April 15, 2002 in her 82nd year. Muriel was the beloved wife of Arnold and sister of John Langman of Mississauga. She will be dearly missed by daughters Donna Ham Pong and Elaine Whitford and sons-in-law Antony Ham Pong and Donald Morissette. She was the very proud grandmother of Ashley, Nadia and Tyler. She was also half-sister to Lillian Spring of Elmvale, Gordon Turner (deceased) of Elmvale and Ray Turner (deceased) of Dartmouth. Muriel took every opportunity to live life to the fullest, enjoying travelling near and far, reading, sewing, knitting and cooking. She was a skilled farming wife and a dedicated member of the United Church Women, participating at many church suppers. Friends will be received at the Parker Funeral Home, 28 Sir James Morris Drive, Morrisburg, on Friday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. where the funeral service will be celebrated on Friday, April 19, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Il était le père de Yves Béliveau (Josée Grégoire), Lucie Béliveau (Martin Gagné), et de André Béliveau conjoint de Nadine Chénard. Il était le fils de Mme Bernadette Béliveau et de feu M. J. Arthur Béliveau. Il était le grand-papa de Charles, Laurence, Catherine, Maxim, et Alexandre. Il laisse également sa soeur Lise Béliveau (Yvan Dostie) ainsi que ses beaux-frères et belles-soeurs de la famille Cloutier. (2 Timothy 4-7).It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of James on Monday, April 15, 2002 at the Elisabeth Bruyere Health Centre, age 78, of Parkinson's Disease and Cancer. Beloved husband of 52 years of Alice Marie (nee Hassan). Dear father and father-in-law of Gail and Larry Newman of Fort McMurray, Alberta and Brian Lucas of Etobicoke, Ontario. Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Natasha and Brendan Newman. Sadly missed by his sisters Sarah McQuade and her husband Lorne, Geraldine Kelly and Peggy Di'Carlo and her husband Angelo. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and friends throughout Canada. Predeceased by his cherished parents, William and Marie Lucas of Chipman, N.B. James was a devoted family man and had unending love for his wife, children and grandchildren. He was born in Chipman, N.B. on February 20, 1924. On February 24, 1944 he joined the Armed Forces, first serving in the Army and then in the Air Force. His military career took him to many bases including CFB Rockcliffe, 2 Wing (France), 4 Wing (Germany) and CFB Chatham, N.B. He retired from the Forces on February 20, 1974 and settled in Ottawa. His "second career" also involved the military, as he worked for the Department of National Defence in the Cataloguing Department, before taking his second retirement in September, 1985. James' interests and hobbies included sports, gardening and reading. Family and friends may visit at the St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 1200 Ogilvie Road at Aviation Parkway on Wednesday 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, 400 St. Laurent Blvd., on Thursday, April 18, 2002 at 11 a.m. A Reception will follow at the Funeral Home Reception Centre. MME CLAIRE MELOCHE (née St-Jacques) C'est avec une grande tristesse que la famille annonce son décès à North Bay, le 15 avril 2002, à l'âge de 74 ans. Elle laisse dans le deuil son époux bien-aimé, Léo Meloche et ses enfants: Pierre (Danièle) d'Ottawa, Jean (Monique) de Wawa, Paul de Kingston, Françoise d'Ottawa, Lise (David McMahon) de Chelsea, Québec et Adèle de Gatineau. Elle restera tendrement gravée dans la mémoire de ses petits-enfants: Jean-François, Stéphanie, Julie, Caroline, Isabelle et Pierre. Elle est la soeur bien-aimée d'Ernest (Raymonde), Henri (Carmen), André, Françoise Dumont (Paul) et soeur Thérèse St-Jacques. L'ont prédécédée dans le deuil ses parents, Eva et Henri St-Jacques ainsi que deux frères: Antoine et Gilles. Mme Meloche était paroissienne à l'église St-Vincent-de-Paul; elle fut résidente de la Fédération des femmes canadiennes-françaises et pendant de nombreuses années très active au sein de cette paroisse. Claire était graduée du Collège Bruyère, elle a reçu son Baccalauréat à l'Université de Toronto. Elle fut nommée membre de la section française de la bibliothèque de North Bay. Elle était aussi bénévole pour Meals on Wheels. Parents et amis sont priés d'assister à la MAISON FUNÉRAIRE McGUINTY, le mercredi 17 avril de 14h à 16h et de 19h à 21h. La messe funéraire sera célébrée le jeudi 18 avril, à la paroisse St-Vincent-de-Paul à 10h30, l'inhumation sera au cimetière Notre-Dame, à Vanier, le lundi 22 avril à 11h.
