(Gauley) Mother celebrated her 88th birthday on April 14th with grace and joy. She died in her sleep the night of April 15, 2002. She is predeceased by her husband, Jack, who loved her dearly. She leaves her son, Bob and daughter-in-law Dianne of Windsor, Nova Scotia, daughter Betty of Toronto, granddaughter Jennifer and her husband, Darren of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, brother Jim Gauley of Grenville, QC, her nieces, nephews and many friends, all of whom were privileged to enjoy the happiness and optimism with which she viewed life. Friends will be received at the Parker Funeral Home, 28 Sir James Morris Drive, Morrisburg on Friday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Funeral service will be held at St. James Anglican Church, Morrisburg on Saturday, April 20, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. DFC CD Group Captain RCAF (retired) EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (retired) Peacefully on April 15, 2002 at the Ottawa General Hospital. Beloved husband of Eunice; dear father of Ruth Konzelman (Richard) of Selkirk, Manitoba; and Paul of Toronto; cherished "Pops" to grandchildren Kurt Konzelman and Ailsa Konzelman of Manitoba and great-grandchild Zachary Konzelman. Predeceased by his parents Adelia and William Chappel and his brother Arnold. Born in Guelph, Ontario in 1918, Smitty and his brother Arnold became serious musicians at a young age. Smitty earned an ATCM (piano) at the Royal Conservatory and accompanied Arnold on violin in concerts and on the radio in southern Ontario. World War II interrupted this career path and in 1941 Smitty joined the RCAF to become a flight instructor at Centralia and Camp Borden before being seconded to the RAF in England. At the end of the war he returned to Canada and a 25 yr. career with the RCAF. As he rose through the ranks the family resided in many locations in Canada, Washington DC and finally Winnipeg where he retired as a Group Captain in 1966. Smitty and Eunice returned to Ottawa where he began another career in a senior management role with External Affairs. After his retirement in 1982, Smitty remained active for the balance of his life. Despite an 11 yr. battle with cancer, Smitty served on the Board of Dominion Chalmers United Church; the Board of Governors, Friends of Music University of Guelph; as President of the Canadian Fighter Pilots Association; as well as being a devoted caregiver to Eunice. Smitty's love of music was closely followed by the game of golf and until a month ago, he was eagerly anticipating the opening of the season at Hylands. Smitty had a full life and he will remain in the hearts of his family and friends as a gentleman of intelligence, wit and kindness, a caring and trusted friend and a truly supportive and loved husband, father and grandfather. The family expresses their heartfelt thanks to Yvonne Osorio, the neighbours, and to Smitty's very special physicians Drs. Fleming, Agboola, Goss and DaSilva. Cremation has taken place. At Smitty's request, there will be no funeral service, however friends are invited to join the family on Sunday, April 21 from 3-5 pm at Woodside Hall, Dominion Chalmers Church, 355 Cooper St., Ottawa. A private family interment will take place in Guelph at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire donations can be made in Smitty's memory to the Perley Rideau Veteran's Foundation, 1750 Russell Rd., Ottawa, Ontario, or to the Canadian Cancer Society. Elma Beall Gerwin, 62, beloved wife of Martin Edgar Gerwin, died very peacefully at her home on Monday, April 15, 2002, surrounded by her family. Elma was born in Ottawa, ON, the daughter of the late Herbert Wilson Beall and the late Mary Forke Beall. She was educated at Bishop's University in Lennoxville, QC, and the University of Toronto. She had been a resident of Winnipeg since 1965. From 1990 until her retirement last year, she was a co-ordinator with LiteracyWorks, and was well known for her innovative work in the field of adult literacy. Her many students, and the tutors at LiteracyWorks, will remember her with affection and gratitude. In 2001, she was the winner of a Canada Post Educator Award for literacy workers. Besides her husband Martin, she is survived by son John, daughter-in-law Carol Hoey and grandsons Andrew, Christopher and Spencer; daughter Elisabeth and son-in-law George Fowler; son James and his fiancee Britta Herrmann; brother James Beall, sister-in-law Joanne, nephew Michael and niece Jacqueline. The family wishes to thank Dr. P. Harris and the staff of Grace Cancer Care, as well as Dr. S. Ahmed and the staff of the MacCharles unit of CancerCare Manitoba, for their competence and compassion. (nee Carson) Peacefully, in her sleep, on Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Bastion Place Nursing home in Salmon Arm, B.C. Much loved mother and mother-in-law of Carson and Joy Carter and Nancy Carson of Salmon Arm, and Rudi Carter and Eleanor Ward of Toronto. Grandmother of Billy (Cindy) Gopaul and Nila Gopaul of Vancouver; Kendall Carter (Ian Pritchard) of Calgary and Dean Carter of Toronto; and Bennett, Alexander and Celena Carter of Toronto. Great-grandmother of Rosabelle, Rebecca and Robin Gopaul of Vancouver and Reid Pritchard of Calgary. Her family will miss her stories, her zest for life, her wide-ranging curiosity and her sense of humour. She was a lifelong journalist and world traveller. Born in Ottawa November 29, 1912, she lived there with her grandparents until age 13 when she joined her father in Calgary. She began her career at the Calgary Herald, wrote freelance for many publications while she raised her family in Salmon Arm, B.C. and later, moved back to Ottawa where she was a columnist at the Ottawa Journal before retirement. She was active in the Zonta Club and the Media Club of Canada, sat on the CBC Board of Directors for two terms and was active in local politics as a school trustee, and in national politics as a campaign manager. Alixe chose to be cremated. There will be no service. A private family celebration of life will be held at a date to be determined. Peter is survived by his wife Alice Wickenden; his sons John (Diane Gallagher) of Peterborough, Ontario, Christopher (Catherine Garrow) of Rossport, Ontario, Peter (Elizabeth Rhinelander) of Beverly Farms, Massachusetts, and William (Margot Lang) of Vancouver, British Columbia; his grandchildren Thomas, William, Adele, Angus, and Peter MacEwen, Cassia Gallagher Piper, and by his sister-in-law Vera MacEwen. At Peter's request there will be neither visitation nor service.
