Mère qui admirait et avait un grand amour pour ses 4 enfants: Liette (Louis Savoie), Michel (Nathalie Tremblay), Martine et Josée (Gary Fast), ainsi que ses petits-enfants: Philippe, Valérie, Gabrielle et feu Sophie (enfants de Liette et Louis), Étienne et Pascale Roberte (enfants de Nathalie et Michel); soeur bien-aimée de: Francine (Gilles Thibault), feu Jules Gauthier (Micheline Lajoie) et Claire. Elle veillera sur toutes ses tendres et loyales amies avec une pensée particulière pour celles de son cercle de bridge. Laura Jean Gates Died suddenly on Saturday, March 9, 2002 at Carveth Care Centre, Gananoque where she had resided for three years. Prior to that Laura had lived in Kingston for fifty-seven years while she was employed at Alcan, retiring in 1972. Laura was born on February 13, 1912, the daughter of Robert and Lydia (Galway) Gates at the family farm which is now Grass Creek Park and the location of MacLachlan Woodworking Museum in the former Pittsburgh Township. She attended Fingerboard School. Laura was a member of the United Church of Canada and prior to moving to Gananoque she attended Cookes-Portsmouth and Zion United Churches. She was a member of Kingston Senior Citizens and enjoyed traveling, gardening, knitting, crocheting, tatting and quilting and was the primary caregiver to her mother, Lydia, prior to her death at the age of 105. Survivors include brothers, Norman of Kingston and James of Gananoque. Also surviving are several nephews and nieces, Ken (Marian) Gates and family, Betty (Ennis) James and family, Beverley Albert, John (Rhonda) Gates and family, Douglas Gates and family and Carolyn Gates and family. Several cousins also survive. Predeceasing Laura were her parents, Robert and Lydia Gates, brothers George and Leslie and sisters-in-law Mary, Helen, Margeurite and Margaret. The funeral was held at KW Montroy Funeral Home, Gananoque on Wednesday, March 13, 2002 with Dr. George Southall officiating. During the service niece Betty James shared memories of Aunt Laura. Peacefully on Sunday, April 7, 2002 at age 65 in Ottawa. a soldier, diplomat and most recently an actor, Jim transcended the boundary between the United States and Canada. The descendant of Scots and grandson of Canadians, he was the son of the late William Robert Bonthron of Princeton, N.J. a world-champion sprinter in the 1930s and the late Marion Lineweaver of Martha's Vineyard, a poet. Educated at Selwyn House in Montreal, Bishop's in Lennoxville and St. Paul's in Concord, N.H., he took a history degree at Princeton University. As an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, he served with the U.S. Naval Mission to Haiti in 1959-61. He then joined the Black Watch Regiment in Montreal. Jim's subsequent 30-year career with Canada's Department of External Affairs took him to Belgium, the Congo, South Africa, Czechoslovakia, New York, Baghdad, Austria and Minneapolis. After his retirement in 1993, he accompanied his wife Gilliane to Costa Rica and China, where his roles in the TV series Xiao Lang Di and as Edgar Snow in the feature film Mao Zedong and Snow made him a familiar face on Chinese screens. His life-long enthusiasm for sailing, hockey and skiing was curtailed only by his courageous two-year battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Gilliane (nee Lapointe); his children Alexandra, Catriona and Fiona; and his sisters and brothers Katama, Jennifer, Susan, William and Thomas. He will be profoundly missed by his adoring grandchildren Nicholas and Maddie, many nieces and nephews, and his admiring friends in Ottawa and around the world. Son of the late John Fitzpatrick and Annie Allkins of Low, Quebec. Predeceased by his loving wife Cora Wilson in 1990, his daughter Joyce Emma Fitzpatrick and infant brother Frank, born and died in 1910. George will be deeply missed by his daughter Marlene and son-in-law Kenneth Armstrong of Orleans. George was a member of the Cameron Highlander Regiment of Ottawa, during WWII, and remained a Piper with the Cameron's until the late 1950s. George worked for the Gatineau Power Company (Hydro Quebec) for 36 years, and retired in 1976. He was a prolific fiddle player, and well known up and down the Gatineau for keeping many gatherings going at their peek until the wee hours of the morning. George was also an avid angler and hunter throughout his life and enjoyed the great outdoor life. Special thank you to Grace Massy for her kindness and compassion in helping to take care of dad. LAURA MAY ALMERS In loving memory of Laura May Almers, 80, a longtime resident of Rainy River, Ont., who passed away at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. on Monday, April 1, 2002. Laura was born Feb. 1, 1922 in Rainy River to John and Hazel Fadden. She grew up in the Rainy River area and taught school at the Morson Public School in 1942. During the war, she worked in Toronto in an ammunition factory making shells. She returned to the Rainy River area in 1950, and began work at Arctic Sport Products as an office manager in 1968. She was united in marriage to Jack Race in 1954, who passed away in 1971. On Aug. 29, 1972, she was united in marriage to William (Willie) Almers. Laura spent many years as hostess/cook Onboard The Ark. She also loved to work on ceramics and enjoyed teaching it to others. She was a member of the Eastern Star and St. James Anglican Church. Laura loved to spend time with her family and friends, and always looked forward to their gatherings. She also loved flowers, birdwatching, fishing, and shore lunches. She was predeceased by her first husband, Jack Race, in 1971; brother-in-law, David Bolen on May 21, 1998; sister, Louise Johnson, on Oct. 15, 2001; and mother-in-law, Nora Almers. She is survived by her husband, Willie; sisters, Marjorie Bolen and Gladys (Emil) Peloquin; brother, Gerald (Judy) Fadden; brothers-in-law, John Almers, Almar (Lorriane) Almers, and Don Johnson; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bright; and their families. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 27, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Rainy River. Fr.
