Loving father of Beverley and her husband Dan Merritt, Waterloo; Lawrence Ruddy and his wife Pamela Wright, Brampton. Dear brother of Jean Brennan, Mary Allen and Flora Easton, all of Ottawa; Tom Ruddy, Vancouver, B.C. and predeceased by his twin brother, Laurence Ruddy. Loving grandfather of Tami, Heidi, Ted, Larry, Mark, Lora and great grandfather of Alexandra, Taylor, Emma, Lauryn, Dytria, Kendra and Kiara. Alexander Ruddy was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Dunsdon Branch, Brantford; a retired employee of Pittsburg Paints, where he worked for 25 years; was a veteran during the Second World War serving with the 8th New Brunswick Hussars Regiment, wounded in the Italian Campaign. (nee Burke) October 24, 1914 - April 7, 2002 Peacefully in Ottawa, Ontario, aged 87, surrounded by Susan, Simon, Heather and several grandchildren. Predeceased by her diplomat and author husband Graham (1912-1970). Survived by her loving children Michael, Susan Hill (Les), and Simon (Heather Maclachlan). "Mawmaw" was deeply treasured by her U.K. grandchildren Toby (Emma) and Ed (Natalie) Crick (and by their father Robert), and by her Canadian grandchildren Margaret, Clare, Christiane and Angus McInnes. Joan was thrilled to learn of the birth of her great-grandson Oscar Crick on March 16. Joan is also survived by her loving cousin June Jago (Melbourne, Vic), by her university friends Kate Smith (Perth, WA) and Lesley Lane (Melbourne), and by her beloved sister-in-law Kate Thirkell (London, England) and her children. Joan had many friends in Canada and around the world who will miss her dearly. Joan graduated from the University of Melbourne (where she met Graham) in 1935, and worked in children's programming for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. She travelled to London, England in 1938 to marry Graham shortly after the Munich Crisis, then moved to Canada where she took up freelance broadcasting work with the CBC, and lovingly supported her husband's work as a journalist, art editor for Saturday Night, film producer for the National Film Board, and author, in Toronto until 1943, and then in Ottawa. In 1948, when Graham joined External Affairs, Joan served the role of a diplomat's spouse with flair, talent and enthusiasm, including overseas in India (1951-54), New Zealand (1954-55), the U.K. (1958-62), Jamaica (1963-65) (where she enjoyed raising funds for schools) and at UNESCO in Paris (1965-70). From September 1970, she lived in London to be near Susan and Robert's family, and Michael, where her activities included volunteering on housing estates. In 1979 she returned to Canada, living in Toronto, where she was active in volunteering at the Art Gallery of Ontario, in political campaigning, in maintaining close contact with her many Toronto friends, and in welcoming numerous visits from her grandchildren. Operations on both knees and arthritis did not stop her from enjoying her daily walks in High Park. She returned to Ottawa in December 2000 to be near Simon's family at Rideau Place where she made many friends. Joan was witty, well read, a talented conversationalist, a fine cook, a lover of the theatre and the arts, and faithful to the many friends she had met in her travels. As a mother, she set high but loving standards for her children, and was generous to a fault. As "Mawmaw", she was kind, supportive, and generous to her grandchildren. We will all miss her enormously. Joan was cremated in Wakefield, Quebec. In celebration of her life, Simon's family is welcoming close friends at a memorial reception at 4 Harvard Ave., Ottawa, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 14. Born in Swansea, Wales, on November 9, 1939. A gifted teacher and avid sportsman, David was educated at the University of London and at Oxford University. He was the father of Mrs. Jack Riede (Doris), Mrs. Walter Wisniowski (Donna), and the late Glen Hopper. He was the grandfather to Joseph, 28, and Jamie Wisniowski, 25, and Chelsea, 12, and Zackariah, 11, Hopper. A son of the Great Depression era, he was a believer in Christianity, family, community, and hard work. His tenet was: "There's no such word as can't." This philosophy guided his accomplishments. He was an Elder of the Merivale United Church, served as a school trustee, was active in senior organizations, earning a Volunteer award. A farmer, a businessman and land owner, he forged success in many endeavours, together with his wife and life partner. He was a patriarchal figure to many, some close cousins living near: Wayne, Wenda, Gary and Karen (Stinson), and others in Manitoba and elsewhere. His family, community, and friendship connections spanned generations, cultures and creeds. He will be much missed by all who held him dear, and well remembered by the many to whom he extended the hand of help. He endeavoured to live by the principal he held the most central: "Do unto others as ye would have them do unto you." Born in Toronto in 1910, daughter of the late George Wilmot Essery and Lucy Mable (Lucas) Essery, Doris died at Green Gables Manor Nursing Home, Stouffville, Ontario, on Monday, April 8, 2002. She was proud to be a fifth generation descendent of Robert Land of Niagara, U E L. She has gone to join her loving and well loved husband of 49 years, the late Cdr. Cyril Alfred Gilbert, C.D., R.C.N. (1983). Cherished mother of Peter (Barb) of Brighton, Ontario, and Ann of Alcove, Quebec, and grandmother of Megan, Sandy and Gen Gilbert. Predeceased by her sisters Amy (the late Dr. John R. McArthur) and Margaret (the late Dr. Peter Andrachuk). Doris attended Parkdale Methodist (United) Church, Prince of Wales School and Havergal College. She met her future husband on the Empress of Britain in 1932. They moved to Ottawa in 1943 and returned to Toronto in 1982 to be closer to her family. She spent many years at Glynnwood in Thornhill. Developer Glen Cairn Peacefully at home, with his wife by his side, on Saturday, April 13, 2002, Bill Connelly in his 83rd year. Beloved husband of Tena. Predeceased by his first wife Eva Brown. He was a loving grandfather to Erin and Katie and will be sadly missed by them and his Aunt Hazel Wilson. Fondly remembered by many special friends: the love of his life Marie, Joan, Gerrie and Joyce, his best little girlfriend Danielle and buddy Jamie. Son of the late Jessie Smith and Bernard Connelly. Dear brother of the late Jim (Lenore). Bill started his career as a Captain with the Canadian Army serving overseas in active duty from 1940-45. Upon his return, he joined Central Mortgage, becoming Assistant Chief Engineer (1949-56), after which Bill teamed up with A.B. Taylor to develop the Copeland Park area. He served a unique two (2) terms as President of the Ottawa Home Builders Association (1958-60). In 1963, Bill was elected Chairman of the National House Builders Association (NHBA) Research Committee and appointed President and General Manager of Conarm Developments Ltd. While President of NHBA (1967), he held many other positions on various Boards. He went on to develop "Canada's Centennial City" - the first development with underground coax cable, telephone, hydro and oil pipeline. It was the first community outside the city with all amenities. This area is now known as Glen Cairn. Bill retired in 1973 after selling his Development business to Costain. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa, on Tuesday, April 16, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday, April 17, from 10 a.m. until service in the Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Interment Pinecrest Cemetery. Passed peacefully away at his home, 5 Winnipeg Street, St. John's NF, on April 9, 2002, Lawrence (Larry) Hatfield aged 58 years. Larry was a devoted husband and father and was involved in his community as a life member of the Kinsmen Club of Canada, St. John's East. Predeceased by his much loved and adored son, Andrew in December 2000, and also his parents, Lawrence Hatfield in 1971 and Alice Hatfield in 1984. Larry was surrounded, as always, by his loving wife Peggy (Martin) and much loved and devoted son, Lawrence, special daughter-in-law Shari and special niece Jacqueline Brockerville. Left to mourn are his brothers and sisters: Mary, Betty (Don), Ben (Joan), Anna (Rudy), Victoria (Dave), Teresa (Dick), Bill (Marg), and Bonnie (Dave). Also left to mourn are a large circle of relatives and friends including lifelong friends Reg Noftall, Raymond Kerrivan, and dearest and loyal family friends Dick and Paula Yabsley and family. BERTIE ALEX (BUD) JORDBRO Bertie (Bud) Jordbro, 86, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, 550 Osborne St. Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at his residence on Wed., April 10, 2002. He was born Nov. 5, 1915 in Dixon, Ill. to the late Alex and Nellie Jordbro. At an early age, Bud moved to Sask. to follow in his fathers footsteps as a carpenter. During World War II, he served with the Royal Canadian Navy in Canada, where he also enjoyed playing trombone as a Navy Bandsman. During that time, he met and was united in marriage on June 24, 1944 to Madeline McGinnis. Upon his discharge from the services, he returned to Canada, and in 1954 moved to Fort Frances where he worked as a carpenter for various local contractors, and also as carpenter foreman for the centre span on the Noden Causeway during its construction. In the summer of 1968, the family moved to the west coast where Bud continued working until his retirement in 1980. In the fall of 1990, the family returned to Fort Frances where they have resided since. Bud enjoyed his retirement, and loved spending many enjoyable hours hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. He was a past member of the Legion in British Columbia, life member of the Sons of Norway Lodge, and member of the Scandinavian Club for many years. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Frances, served on the church council for many years, and was the organizer of the Zion Lutheran Church Sixth Fort Frances Cubs and Scouts Pack. He was predeceased by two children, James Patrick Jordbro, and special son, Nick Andrew Kowaluk; and by one brother-in-law, William G. McGinnis. Bud is survived by his wife, Madeline Jordbro of Fort Frances, Ont.; son, John Jordbro and wife Shelly, and grandson Ethan all of Fort Frances, Ont.; two granddaughters, Montica and husband, Bruce Lesperance, and Melanie Kowaluk, both of Victoria, B.C.; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Kowaluk of Ladysmith, B.C.; four sisters, Lillian and husband, Bill MacLean of Saskatoon, Sask., Joan and husband, Fred Crowley of Ancastor, Ont., Nellie Jean Jordbro of Simcoe, Ont., and Geraldine and husband, John Wilton of Porcupine Plain, Sask.; one brother-in-law, Jack McGinnis and wife, Barb of Brantford, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 15, 2002 at 11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Frances, Ont., with Pastor Brian Keffer officiating. Interment will take place in Riverview Cemetery at a later date. The Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 Colour Party will provide a military tribute during the service. Honourary pallbearers will be Aage Rude, Pete Basaraba, Carl Hensrud, Ed Sletmoen, Matt Fairnington and Blaine Orr. Paul Hébert décédé après une courageuse lutte contre le cancer, au CHVO Pavillon de Gatineau, le mercredi 10 avril 2002 à l'âge de 65 ans. Il était l'époux bien-aimé de Denise Girard et fils de feu Maurice Hébert et de feu Alexandrina Charbonneau. Outre son épouse, il laisse dans le deuil ses 4 enfants: Sylvie (André Desaulniers), Daniel, Francine (Denis Roy) et Chantal (Robert Deschamps); ses petits-enfants: Jean-François (Manon Charbonneau), Karolane, Mélissa, Julien, Guillaume et Vincent; son filleul Yves et sa filleule Julie. Il laisse également 3 frères: Victor (Kathleen Dinelle), Raymond (Monique Girard), André (Claire Lafrance); 9 soeurs: Thérèse (feu Émilien Charette), Gilberte (feu Réal Hébert), Maria (feu Marcel Martel), Rosa (feu Paul-Émile Beaudoin), Claudette (Bernard Laramée), Catherine (Pierre-Paul Pilon), Pauline (feu Réjean Beaulne), Jocelyne (feu Janot Larocque) et Marie-Marthe. Il laisse plusieurs beaux-frères, belles-soeurs, neveux, nièces, cousins, cousines et ami(e)s. Il fut prédécédé par 4 frères: Lucien, René, John (feu Doris St-Jean) et Louis (Jeannine Émard); sa soeur Rita. Il n'y aura pas de visites à la maison funéraire, cependant un service religieux aura lieu en la cathédrale St-Jean-Marie-Vianney, 160, rue Laval, Gatineau le samedi 13 avril 2002 à 11h. La famille remercie spécialement le Dr Lapointe, l'infirmière Thérèse, ainsi que toute l'équipe du 5e Nord de l'hôpital de Gatineau pour les bons soins prodigués. (nee Bunyan) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sarah Ruth Burchill on April 10, 2002, with her family by her side, in her 77th year (predeceased by her husband Claude Burchill). Sarah is the cherished and wonderful mother of Carol (husband Bob Booth), Margaret (husband Gary Lockyer), Linda (husband David Dubroy) and John (wife Sonya Gravelle). Sarah will also be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Stephen, Andrew, Rob, Laura, Jennifer, Adam, Devin, Shawn, Cory, Leah and her two great-grandchildren, Jessica and Brayden. She was a devoted nanny and her happiest times were spent with her grandchildren around her. Daughter of the late Arthur and Theresa Bunyan of London, England. Sarah left her beloved England in 1946 as a young war bride settling in Merrickville, Ontario and later making her home in Ottawa. She left behind in England, 12 brothers and sisters who she missed dearly, now predeceased by her brothers Sammy, Harry, Charlie, Bill, Tommy (wife Mary) and predeceased by her sisters, Emmie, Theresa, Annie and Florie. Sarah is survived by her sister Betty and her husband Johnny Wilcox and her best friend and much loved brother John and his wife Marina. Sarah is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Sarah will be missed by her special friend Lillian and her presences and friendship will be missed by her many dear friends at her Penfield Drive residence. To our dear mother, your true sense of family values will live on with us forever. Your courage and devotion to us will always be remembered. We take comfort in knowing that you are now and forever more, in the loving arms of your mother whom you loved so very much and that your faith in God guided you courageously to His side. We would like to thank the wonderful nursing staff at the Arnprior Memorial Hospital. Words cannot express our thanks to nurses Jayne, Eva, Laurie and so many others on the first floor north, and to Dr. Robson. Our mother was also compassionately cared for by homecare nurses, Marie, Anne and Cornellia. Special thanks to Dr. Pippa Hall for her excellent support and care.
