Lifelong Mattice resident Aurelus Lagrange, 62, of 157 Queen St. died Feb. 2, 2002 at Notre-Dame Hospital following a brief illness. Born Jan. 24, 1940 in Mattice, he worked at Levesque Lumber in Hearst until its closing and then at the nearby Tri-Cept Inc. planer since its startup. Predeceased by his parents Emilienne and Léo Lagrange, sisters Fernande Fauchon and Annette Vachon, and a brother Marius Lagrange, he leaves his sisters Bérangère (Raymond) Létourneau of Mattice, and Michelyne (Allen) Edlund of Waterloo, and brothers Denis and Raymond (Michelyne), all of Mattice, and Roch (Solange) of Waterloo. Also surviving are a sister-in-law Marielle Lagrange of Mattice, and a brother-in-law Albert Fauchon of Kapuskasing. Rev. René Grandmont officiated the Feb. 5 afternoon service at Église St-François-Xavier Church. Interment will be at the St-François-Xavier Cemetery.

Marie-Marthe Grzela, 24 Fillion St. Fauquier, died at Sudbury Regional Hospital, Feb. 4, 2002. She was 61 years old. Mrs. Grzela was born in 1940 in Lac Bouchette. She was a housewife. She enjoyed going camping, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, arts and crafts and playing cards. She was a member of the Bon Air Ski-Doo Club and was a long time member of UCFO. She is predeceased by mother Laurette Plourde; brother Roger; sister Thérèse Bourgeois. She is survived by husband Gilles; father Albany Plourde; daughter Sylvie (Norm) Grzela-Leclerc; and son Daniel (Nicole), all of Kap; sisters Pierrette Thibeault of Cochrane, Adrienne Coté of Ottawa, Monique Duguay and Louise Bond both of Hearst, Suzanne Pinard of Montréal; brothers Jacques, Jean Eudes Plourde, both of Faquier, Fernand of Montreal, Ghislain of Opasatika, André of Kap, Dominique of Ottawa and grandchildren Rémi, Donald, Simon and Luc. Rev. Jean Morin performed the services at St. Agnes Church. Cremation took place at Hillcrest Crematorium

A memorial service will be held at St. Gertrude Church in Smooth Rock Falls on March 1 for former resident Irenee O'Rourke. Mr. O'Rourke , died at The Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora, on Jan. 28, 2002. He was 78 years old. Born on Jan. 29, 1924, in Smooth Rock Falls, he left as a boy of eight, but returned as an adult when he met and married Hélène Bisson and joined Abitibi, first in the Woodlands division and later in the laboratory until his retirement. He was an avid, self-taught violin player and teacher. He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. He was predeceased by his wife, his parents Georges O'Rourke, and mother Laina Gagné of Smooth Rock Falls, brothers Albert, Daniel, Stanley and George. He is survived by his daughter Evelyn Moore, son-in-law Owen, step-granddaughter Tracy (Eric) Cave, and grandsons David and Colin all of Kenora; and great grandchildren Michael, Darren and Alison of Cochrane.

Henry ‘Hank’ Hill Henry (Hank) Hill, 78, passed away Friday, Feb. 1, 2002. He was born July 1,1923 in Burriss, Ont. Henry served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. After the war, he returned to Toronto, Ont., where he worked for many years at John Inlas Co. Ltd. He was an avid sports fan who loved the Toronto Maple Leaf and Blue Jays. In 1972, he married Sophie Mital and moved to Selkirk, Man. He worked for the Selkirk school board as a maintenance man until he retired in 1988. He was predeceased by his wife, Sophie; and his parents, William and Anne Hill. Henry will be sadly missed by his sister, Evelyn Brown of Devlin, Ont.; his brother, Hubert (Mike) Hill of Belleville, Ont.; and his nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. at Gilbert Funeral Home in Selkirk.

Lorne McDowell Lorne McDowell, 78, recently of Mine Centre, Ont., passed away Friday, Feb. 8, at Unity, Wis. in the home of his son. He was born Nov. 17, 1923. (Sister Mary Doris) Sister Eleanor Honsberger, a Grey Sister of the Immaculate Conception, died in hospital in Pembroke, Ontario, on the 12th of February in the 57th year of her religious life. Sister is mourned by the members of her religious congregation as well as several nieces. She was predeceased by her parents, Francis and Fern (Sussex) and by her sisters, Clara, Marcelan (Cartier), Lois and Doris. Sister Eleanor nursed in Penetanguishene, ON and Pembroke, ON, in Lestock, SK and in the Dominican Republic. On retirement she assisted in the Motherhouse Archives. She spent the final years of her life in Shalom Residence, the sisters' infirmary. Resting at the Grey Sisters' Motherhouse, 700 Mackay Street, Pembroke from 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 14th. William Franklin Kingston, 65 William Franklin "Bill" Kingston, a lifetime resident of the area, died at Brockville General Hospital Friday, Jan. 11, 2002 at the age of 65. He had been residing at RR 3 Prescott. Mr. Kingston was born in Ventnor Nov. 16, 1936, the son of Delbert Kingston and Helen Peters, who predeceased him. He married Elaine O'Brien May 9, 1959 at the Sacred Heart manse, Cardinal. Mr. Kingston had been employed as a roads superintendent for the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. He is survived by his wife Elaine, sons Paul (Joan) of RR 1 Cardinal and Greg (Sharon) of RR 2 Iroquois; daughter Cheryl Kingston of Arden and her friend Pete Baker; brothers Jim (Bev) of Thunder Bay and Rick (Rosalyn) of Fort McMurray, Alberta; sisters Betty Ward of RR 3 Prescott, Audrey (Bill) McCully of Prescott and Rhea Cooper of Brockville. He will be sadly missed by six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, where the funeral took place at 1 pm. Rev. Jack Urquhart officiated. Funeral services for longtime Constance Lake First Nation resident Jimmy George Stephens Sr, 50, of 18 Shan-Way-Shoo St. were held Feb. 4, 2002 at the community. He died, Jan. 30, at Notre-Dame Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born Sept. 20, 1951 at Pagwa River, he came to Constance Lake in 1952. Since 1969, he had been employed at Lecours Lumber Co. in Calstock as a carry-lift (loader) operator at the sawmill. An active community volunteer with youth and minor hockey novice and peewee teams, he was a former Band councillor and volunteer firefighter. Described as a devoted, caring family person and grandfather, understanding towards people and a dedicated worker, he had a strong faith in the Great Spirit and in his heritage and traditions. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, walking, singing and playing guitar, old-timers hockey. Predeceased by his mother Bella Stephens in 1988 and father Alec Stephens in 1995, and a sister Jemima Wesley in 1975, he leaves: his wife Donna (nee Louttit) Stephens of Constance Lake; sons Ronald Corston (companion Hannah-Mae) of Moose Factory, and Jimmy Jr and Jeffrey Stephens; and daughters Lorraine (Conrad Wesley) Stephens and Harmony Stephens, all of Constance Lake. Also surviving are his sisters Madeline Bird and Christine Stephens, both of Constance Lake, Elizabeth (Rocky) Audet of Caramat, Gloria (Jean-Pierre) Champagne and Susan Sandau, all of Hearst, a brother Stanley (Pauline) Stephens of Constance Lake, and grandsons Shane and Gavin Wesley of Constance Lake. Rev. Douglas Richardson of Hearst officiated the service at St. Stephen's Anglican Church. Interment followed at the Constance Lake burial ground.
