Our beloved, courageous and "sisukas" Mother and Mummo, widow of Paul John Niemi, died in her ninety-fourth year on February 6, 2002 at St. Margaret's Home in Montreal. Daughters Irma Cecilia and Ena Theresa (Goldberger), son-in-law Claude Edmond, granddaughters Dalya Anne and Leila Shoshana, grandson-in-law Mario George Mota, Opa and May Goldberger, Mirja Bishop of Los Angeles, nieces and nephews in Finland, dear friends and neighbours, will miss her and mourn her, but always remember her gentle, devoted and loving nature, her fierce determination, and her extraordinary life. Since her admission to hospital on December 1, 2000, our Mother and Mummo has been lovingly tended at the Montreal General Hospital, Chateau Westmount and St. Margaret's Home. We are very grateful to all her caregivers for their dedication and efforts to heal and comfort her as well as the support they have provided to the whole family. We also want to acknowledge and thank Dr. Kenneth Flegel for his wise and tender care over many years. "Mummo always leaves when she is ready" and it was no different with her final journey. A journalist and family man of gentle humour and deep perception, died on Wednesday February 6, 2002 in hospital in Ottawa, in his 70th year. Stewart was a gifted writer and reporter who never raised his voice, in print or in person. The Dean of the Canadian Parliamentary Press Gallery before his retirement, he covered the passages of politicians and events for four decades. Stewart knew everyone and condemned no one. He would get to the nub of an issue or person in a phrase, deflating with humour rather than to rail and rant. Stewart was a proud Cape Bretoner from Orangedale, N.S., starting out early as a young reporter for Canadian Press in 1952 Halifax. He soon was CP's man covering Newfoundland and the tumultuous times of Premier Smallwood in that new Canadian province. His abilities led him while still in his twenties to become a foreign correspondent for CP, in London, England, and later to Toronto and Ottawa. He was CP's senior political writer for many years, a writer for the then Weekend magazine, and finally national political columnist. He continued to write during his retirement, for the Issues Network and was admired all across Canada for his quiet wit and keen observation. While he never judged harshly, you knew very clearly what Stewart thought of a person or event. Music was very close to Stewart, from the Celtic Canadian airs of his well-loved Cape Breton to Dixieland jazz that engaged him and his banjo for many joyous years. He was the appointed leader of the National Press and Allied Workers Jazz Band Inc. This band of talented musicians played benefits for charities in cities and towns across Canada. Stewart leaves Violet, his wife of 45 years, their three daughters, Susan (Donovan), Janet (Jim), and Sharon, and grandson Caleb. Predeceased by his two brothers Ian and Jimmy (Nellie). He leaves sister-in-law Mollie, nephews Derek (Kathy), Donnie (Lisa) and Kenzie (Lisa) and families. Niece Diane (Ray) and family, Debbie (John) and family, brother-in-law Edmund (Terry), niece Marilyn (John) and family, nephew Michael, and finally he leaves behind a host of friends and journalists, politicians and neighbours and all the folk he befriended in dozens of quiet, thoughtful ways. Cherished grandmother of Dan and Birgitta, Karen and Harley, Olivier and Sheila, Eva, Virginie and Joe, David, Candice, and Fabrice. Great-grandmother of Baron and Dane. Aunt of David Schluss and Miriam Devico. Sister-in-law of Marcelle Chetrit, Rachel and Elias Benay, and Charles and Lea Chetrit. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Funeral service took place from Paperman & Sons, on Thursday, February 7 at 2 p.m. Burial at the Congregation Chevra Shaas Cemetery, de la Savane. Shiva at Or Hahayim in Cote St Luc.
